Asuka dug Kaji because he's pretty great on the surface and she wanted to be acknowledge as an adult, by dating up her pay grade.

In 3.0 Asuka and Mari barely come off as friends, Asuka treats her like she treats Rei, as an annoyance. She is not even tsun to her, or shows any extreme emotion to what she does.

I know they originally had some plans to have Mari and Asuka be closer, but they ended up cutting it, either for time, or someone higher up didn't like the idea.
But now Asuka is just a bitch to her, and treats her like a useless subordinate.

It's a shame, Mari needs something, fucking anything really.
