Is Eva really the only truly great work of anime?

I often try to make the case that Akira is one of the greatest works of entertainment ever made. I don't usually succeed.

The best anime has always been OVA's and movies. They tend to have much higher budget and thus much better animation. Their target audience isn't a bunch of Otaku so they can't be successful just be having some cute girls and video game references thus the writing also tends to be better.

TV anime is literally the lowest end of the anime spectrum. OVAs in their 80s and 90s golden day and movies from all decades consistently put out great works out.

Even if you want to say that Eva is the greatest TV anime ever produced, it's still not relevant because the movie version of Eva was better. Same with Madoka, the movie version is better. Literally the only TV anime ever made that can compete with the best OVAs and movies was Utena.

One of my favorite films is actually the Silver Linings Playbook, which was released a few years back with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

Really great film. Hits home if you've ever had anger issues. Who am I talking to?
