He was just so damn annoying and insecure about himself, that pool OVA really showed his colors. He was nothing but a nuisance and he would not stop bashing on Oreki that entire episode.

Finished the anime two days ago, some of the "mysteries" could've used a bit more polishing so to speak, a lot of the scenes could've used a lot less drama. Liked Oreki's energy conservation policy, wanted to slap Fukube, wanted to slap Chitanda's puffed cheeks and hug Ibara.
Nothing breathtaking but I'm not regreting the time spent and might rewatch it someday.
For some reason I couldn't bring myself to skip the second opening and ending.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought the Festival Arc's mystery was awful. The theme wasn't very good either, it was rarely conveyed or expressed at all during the arc until the end. Most boring arc by far, and I say that as someone who liked the show.
>>
>>118859262
I fell asleep a few times, literally.
But I really liked it
>>
>>118860629
Yeah the school festival was easily my least favorite part in terms of the mystery itself, though the manga club was nice. It's always nice to see feisty characters like Mayaka get shut down by bullies or circumstances.
>Is there anything similar?
In anime? Not that I know of.
>>
It was the anime of the year.

Although I don't agree that it's boring, it does certainly fit "boring master piece."
>>
So does everyone agree with Mayaka and Satoshi giving up on the aspirations because their are people out there who always will be better than them? The ending also ended up depressing because Chitanda pretty much laid out how small her life really is and how it will always be that small while Oreiki could not find it in himself to actually want to pursue a releationship romance with her because it'll just end after thei leave high school. Is that why /a/ likes it so much? It's a depressing slice of life show with a mystery gimmick that does not hold back how shitty life after high school can and will become for most people. Or maybe I got the message wrong.

He's wanted her for a while and is insecure about his worth, not very odd to me. I thought /a/ would love this character because he's self-critical cyborg incarnate.
>>
>>118860723
>>118860826
The idea itself wasn't all that bad but man, they were building it up so much with things going missing everywhere and then the hunt and the targeted clu-Wait, what? That was it? What the hell man!
The amateur movie was a lot better in my opinion.
>>
>>118861091
It's not hard. There are lot of people who take their insecurities in some subjects and apply it to other parts of their life. He believes that he's worthless beyond spouting off unimportant information thus he feels like somebody he likes like Mayaka deserves somebody much much better than him so rather than risk that he's actually right about this he opts to run away from it before it can hurt him. It's why he has that shitty joker personality as well. I found him to be a very realistic character with how he thinks.
>>
>>118858173
I think it's overrated garbage. Because of all the praise it gets from some vocal fags it manages to be even worse. Though ignoring all that crap I believe it was mediocre at best, story wasn't really that interesting, not well developed characters and it was too dragged on that made it boring. Even KyoAni fags agree with some of this.
>>
>>118858387
I don't think that's true anyways, it's not like we live in real meritocracies, so shouldn't let it get to you.
>>
>>118861296
>>118861229
But he cited his reason for running as being that he didn't want to get obsessed over her. Meaning that he was afraid of his incompetence, so if he got passionate for her, he thought he would fail, but that seems like an odd line of thought for romance, considering that love isn't really about competence.
>>
I loved it. I agree that it's not a masterpiece and it does have its flaws, but it's still in my top five.

>>118861632
I'm thinking not in terms of being accepted, but in terms of being acceptable. Excellent even. A joy to accept and a gift to your lover. Anything less would be punishing their virtues by being a burden to them.
Satoshi and I think this way because our love is stronger than our desire to be loved. We want the best for our lover, and for a happy ending, there can be no romance until you are the best.
>>
>>118861994
That's delusional. You can never be perfect, and that's what love is for. Love is seeing another person's faults, and accepting them for it. You can set your goal as being the best so they can have the best for them, but you will never reach it.

You should be a gift to your lover, sure, but you also need to learn to accept their love. It's a two-way street. You'll both have to accept you aren't perfect.
>>

She's just curious.
>>
>>118861878
>>118861932

>>
>>118862194
Adding to this after thinking about it a bit more. Wanting to be the best for the person you love sounds nicely endearing, and is no doubt a good goal to strive for, but sabotaging yourself by saying that you can't settle for anything less than perfection for her is folly. That's the point where you need to admit that, though you do love them, you will fail them at times. And that's why love is two-sided, because when you fail, they'll cover you with their love and acceptance instead. If you refuse to let yourself succeed at all, all you're doing is making your lover unhappy by seeing you beat yourself up, and not giving her what she truly desires, which is your happiness. The only way you can both be happy is by literally feeding off each other's happiness, by being happy to have each other.

Anyway, enough with the romance philosophy, regardless of how logical Satoshi's beliefs are, it no doubt makes him an interesting character and I wouldn't have him any other way.

Like with any discussions that handle perfection, that sort of aspiration is an idea to be pursued and approached, but of course it can never be reached. The idea is to be the best you can be.
>you also need to learn to accept their love
I don't really (openly) think this way, but I would here say that their "love" is just lust, their judgement isn't fit to make such a heavy decision, they wouldn't accept me if they knew me as well as I know myself, I'll ruin the traits in them that I love so much, I'm toxic, etc.
So goes the song sung by the devil on mine and Satoshi's shoulders.

Even if he'd accepted her love, he still wouldn't approve of the man he is, and he'd also resent her for being foolish enough to think so highly of a man that is clearly so low.

Pardon my edgyness.

>>
>>118862582
I think that's where Satoshi fails.

His idea of a relationship with whatshername doesn't include her feelings, just his:
He's too worried about being the best of himself - which is a great thing to strive for in a relationship, unless, like in Satoshi's case, you confuse that for some unobtainable idea of 'perfection'.
This only leads to his insecurities growing bigger and bigger, all the while trying his best to look tough and controlled because that's what he thinks he should be, for her.

In the end, his obsession with becoming so perfect only serve as a way to reflect his already heavy inner insecurities.
So he ends up too focused on his own feelings to be sensitive enough to allow whatshername - and HER love- into his heart.

And that is why Satoshi is such a disappointing person and such a well-written character.

One of my favorite shows. Atmosphere, music, art, and characters all knocked me off my feet. If Mayaka and Chitanda had a bit more development it'd be even higher.

>>118860970
After watching the ending I had hope that Oreki would get around to confessing to Chitanda eventually. He just needed to continue down the path he was moving on and come out of his shell some more. It was unfulfilling to see him miss that opportunity, but I can't see it as a completely downer ending. Its neutral, or depending on your interpretation, downer ending certainly is a breath of fresh air.

>What makes a thread good to you?

The things you mentioned are definitely a big part of it, but I've seen it happen in threads for other series fairly often too. I'm not saying Hyouka threads are bad, they're great, but I enjoy other threads too just as much for their similar level of quality.

Also, and this has nothing to do with this thread, but a big factor to me is how big the subcommunity of a series is, which is usually inversely proportional to the quality of the threads. A lot of the smaller, tight knit fanbases are awesome to be a part of. With some of the better ones it even gets to the point where you can recognize and distinguish other anons at a glance because of how much time you've spent together talking about a particular series in slow-paced, comfy threads.

Anyway, meta discussion aside, Oreki best girl.

Absolutely, but even that can sometimes be preferable over the shitposting fests that are other threads. And depending on how much people want it, even stagnated threads occasionally get good discussion. I'm never one to be afraid of starting it, personally.

It goes on a case by case basis of course though, so it is easy to generalize a little too much here.

You do know that the sister gave him the book because she knew everything and was helping him out don't you?

The sister knowing everything is the running mystery of the show since she's involved in almost every arc in some way.

I think you might have narcolepsy. You should schedule an appointment with your physician.

Masterpiece.

Anyone saying differently just never had an opportunity to rewatch BDs in high quality while able to appreciate story and character details without rush.

The only TV anime contester to Hyouka quality is RGD.
>>
S2 when guys?
>>
>>118858342
Sure. But PA works is on a way to become second KyoAni quality wise.

RDG and NnA blue rays look marvelous, and direction wise they are good too. Shirobako this season is also AOTS.

>Shirobako this season is also AOTS.
hahaha, no
>>
>>118873784
I'm not a fan of PA work's colour direction. The exception to this is NnA's colours.
>>
It's one of my all time favorites. I love it.
>>
>>118873776
when there's material and KyoAni wants to spend a fuckton again
>>
>>118860629
Red Data Girl, Detective Academy Q, Haruhi partly (some episodes only), Yahari Ore, Gosick, Kokoro Connect, Durarara (similar MC dynamic)

>not turning gay for oreki
you are all fools
>>
>>118858173
Chitanda a shit.

Nearly dropped the show because of her.
>>
>>118874058
You what?
>>
>>118860629
heaven's memo pad-haven't finished it but the first 2 mysteries were amazing
>>
Great animation and character designs wasted on storyless snorefest.

This is what amerifat entertainment industry does to people. Do we even still can people like this human beings?
>>
The mysteries were all very lame and I can see why people find it boring, but I thought it was beautiful and I really enjoyed the culture festival arc. I also really enjoyed Oreki and Chitanda, it's probably one of my favorites from KyoAni.
>>

I am not 'murrican and don't watch 'murrican entertainment.
I can enjoy slow movies/anime, I've read enough detective mystery classics for it to be unhealthy.
Hyouka provides nothing of value beyond eyecandy. It is slow and pseudo-intellectual.
>>
>>118874542
Whatever you say, amerifat.
>>
>>118873821
I don't like it when it's too washed out.
>>
>>118858173
dogshit slow pace faggotry that bores you to death and developement between any of the characters is kyoani'd, figure out the rest yourself
>>
>>118858173
It's Kyoani's best show.
>>
One of the few flawless shows.

I know the feel, my friend likes the 1st because of the music, I love the second because of the visuals.

Beyond completely underwhelming storylines?

I'm ambivalent about her sparse appearances. On one hand, seeing her so infrequently made it feel special. But on the other, she's such a fascinating character that I would love to watch an entire series dedicated to her.

Finally people that fucking get it. Satoshi came out as an ass and hate-able because that was the fucking point of his character. I think the problem was his VA which made him sound too flamboyant, but when you look at the mysteries from his perspective, its almost like the universe was rooting for Oreki. Oreki before the Classics club was a guy so lazy he wouldn't run from a fire if he couldnt be bothered to, only to suddenly become Sherlock Poirot: Highschool version.

And there's Satoshi, the mystery lover who sits on the sidelines waiting for his moment to shine and solve a mystery before his Gary Stu best friend, only to fail at every turn because of Oreki's monstrous luck at getting the right clues. It gets even more unfair at the Kanya festival when Satoshi is busting his ass going all around the school looking for clues only to be beaten by Oreki again, who solves the mystery without even getting off from his chair on an isolated area of the school for the entire fucking arc. And so he begins to see Oreki as some perfect guy who he can never hope to be. Which is sad because Oreki is lazy, has no motivation outside external estrogen, and he really only solves most mysteries because of bullshit luck, his only real talent is putting the clues together(ps: I think Oreki is a pretty cool guy).

I think most mystery fans would end up feeling like shit when their lazy best friend keeps solving every mystery that comes to you effortlessly only to say it was just luck.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing more of her in the show, she seemed to be interesting enough, plus her scheming is hilarious.

I'm pretty sure I'm reading it in English right now, buddy. Look a little harder.
