Makoto Shinkai does good photorealism for example.

I really liked Nisekoi because it steered away from standard school/rom com generic look

NGNL was shit because they just shoved post fx and bloom on everything instead of drawing it well.
It doesn't matter what visual direction it takes, as long as it does it effectively.

I might be wrong, but I always use visual direction as a synonym for aesthetic choice, as in the style its drawn in.
