Seeing as it's almost the end of the year, have we got any solid contenders for AOTY?
crest/banner of the stars is one of the most over rated franchises of all time
I could just say hurr it's Ping Pong, and I'm close to doing just that, but we really have had some pretty good shows this year, so I'll list what it's up against (in my mind at least) -
>Sidonia (would have been hands down AOTY for me if it wasn't CG)
3.-Starting with cyborg fetishism and cute robots.
4.-Hipster bullshit 1: Moot shitposted on /a/
5.-ITT: Overrated shit
6.-Can't finish the last episode because I can't bring myself to finish this happiness.
7.-(I honestly don't know about that one)
8.-Epic dub vs sub threads
9.-Muh symbolism: The anime with a shitty ending
10.-Can robots really love? Fuck nigga don't drink that coffee
12.-Nobunaga anime #102103981
I don't know 2012 and 2013.
At least it doesn't have Madoka, Bake, TTGL and other like your average troll chart.
Also before anyone spergs on me, those shows are not bad but they are used in troll charts and you know it!
>Nobunaga anime #102103981
Oh gee wizz sorry for not recognizing 3 anime.
Well, Hyouge mono is not like your average Nobunaga anime but you know what I mean.
Perhaps I should have said "Muh tea" or something.
>sorry for not recognizing 3 anime.
Hand your badge and gun, you're not part of the anime brigade anymore.
Might as well drop your trip since you won't be able to live with the shame.
Why am I the only person who genuinely thinks Glasslip is AOTY?
Can I still use my a folder and my cirno folder, Sir?
I didn't really came to 4chan a lot last year.
Honestly though, what are they?
Oh wow. Honestly, I wouldn't do that to Baccano if I were you, specially if you consider your powerlevel to be "non trivial"
I respectfully disagree on some picks, but that's not a bad chart at all.
UK over NNB in 2013 alone is enough
As for 2014:
>Yama no Susume
Fuck you i liked it
>This for AOTY of any year
Is this a joke list? It's a joke list, isn't it?
>Implying 2013 had anything better
>Implying it wasn't amazing
Sounds like someone is one hell of an OMOSHIROOOOKUNAI faggot
Don't talk shit about muh tanuki family.
>implying uchouten is good
Even Coppelion was better.
Why is that a different chart?
2000 - Banner of the Stars (note that it has a 1999 prequel, Crest of the Stars)
2001 - Banner of the Stars II
2002 - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
2003 - Planetes
2004 - Monster
2005 - Aria the Animation
2006 - Kemonozume
2007 - Baccano
2008 - Kaiba
2009 - Eve no Jikan
2010 - The Tatami Galaxy
2011 - Hyouge Mono
2012 - Space Battleship Yamato 2199
2013 - Uchouten Kazoku
That's not how this works.
>And don't forget your trip tripfaggot.
I thought I couldn't use it anymore.
Also, I was looking at old anime charts to see what 2006 was and I can't believe whatever it is won over Ergo proxy, Ouran Host club (Holy shit this is in my top 3, you assholes) and Welcome to the NHK.
That Kyoto nostalgia alone was reason to give it AOTY, fucking stupidly beautiful city.
I'm look back, wondering what I watched in 2007...
>Seretei no Moribito
>Terra E (don't ask me why)
Holy shit, what a year. And that's not including the stuff I watched later, like Hidamari.
There is literally no way to choose an AOTY from 2007.
Because who wants a shitty spoonfeeding edition
>That's not how this works.
It kind of is, if you haven't even been here long enough to recognise fairly recent annie mays.
I judge all anime by the same criteria.
>Gokukoku no Brynhildr
>Shirobako (everything P.A. Works touches is gold)
I've been here long enough to recognize most of them but as soon as I don't recognize something from last year I am told to lurk more. Jesus fuck.
I understand what you mean but holy shit.
What's next, are you going to call me a newfag for not recognizing something like KLK next year?
>Gokukoku no Brynhildr
>What's next, are you going to call me a newfag for not recognizing something like KLK next year?
Considering the fucking casual of casuals recognise KlaK now because it's so stupidly huge, yeah.
Space Dandy or Ping Pong.
Rest was shit, especially you're favorite anime.
>2006 - Kemonozume
>It's been on my backlong since last month and on my backlog list for years.
I liked Kyousougiga a lot better than this. The entire "oh well!" ending didn't makes me upset.
Kyousougiga was great, but only up to ep7 or so.
Ep 8, 9 and first half of 10 are terrible.
And 2 episodes and half are like a quarter of the whole thing.
A damn shame, the ending was decent at least.
It could have been so amazing with a better script and more budget.
Koto is a miracle of the universe and bestest daugtheru in a long time.
Tatami Galaxy I get,
and probably Ping Pong as of right now, but I don't think Kemonozume or Kaiba deserve to be AOTYs.
>tfw proper Jap novels rarely get TL'ed
I wish I could read everything by him but unless it's in a digital form where I can look up the 50% of kanji I wouldn't yet know it just takes too god damn long.
but i actually unironically like cross ange. and i think others do too, note im not saying that its a good or great show, but it does have a certain charm other than the gratuitous fanservice and what have you
You guys cannot keep on snubbing this. Barakamon is the only other thing that comes to mind. Maybe Parasyte.
twintails are literally the shitiest animu hairstyle anyway. Blue would look so much fucking better with short hair, I mean look at this fixed version of her, my fuggin dick
what the fuck man jesus christ. not cool.
I think there are ebook versions of his books, but to be honest, kanji aren't the biggest problem, it's the grammar. His writing style is beautiful and eloquent, but a lot more complicated than most LNs or writers like Murakami. There is a pretty good manga version of Yoru wa mijikashi, aruke yo otome, though - it has furigana and the grammar is not that hard, so you might try that for starters.
AOTY is already defined, mongrels.
They weren't voted AOTS. It's a fake by some pretentious anon. Yeah, most of the shows on the chart are great, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the shit.
Opinions gonna opinion, but slice-of-life won every season 2013. Deal with it.
And with it, pointless bitching and shit-flinging about whose AOTY chart is objectively less shit.
Yes, /a/ will turn into a giant stalker points thread, except there won't be any numbers to serve as an external reference.
Also, meguca a shit.
There is no contenders because it's already won.
By Ping Pong.
>implying Sabagebu isn't comedy of the year and anime of the year
Fuck all you're hipster shit.
>everyone will call everyone else a hipster because there is no definition for the word hipster.
I disagree with OP's chart on several choices but not because they are "hipster"
My vote is for PingPong. Mushishi and Space Dandy for honorable mention
Does your favorite anime of the year use the medium it was made in to create symbolism that last only for a second or two? Mine does
>4.-Hipster bullshit 1: Moot shitposted on /a/
I'm very undecided.
It's either between Mushishi and Ore Twintail and Ping Pong.
I'm almost tempted to say Twintail is the best anime in recent years but it would mean it's superior than the others and the other anime aren't as great.
Tanuki shit was boring shit, lackluster characters, stupid plot, stupid world following traditions for no reason, annoying ''soo beautiful'' character plot device that was stupid and a meh ending.
The only people who praise it are people who thought it was the only decent thing airing during the summer and asshats who thought it was good.
>It's either between Mushishi and Ore Twintail and Ping Pong.
>Anywhere near AOTY
>I'm very undecided.
You're very retarded
>Tanuki shit was boring shit, lackluster characters, stupid plot, stupid world
>BUT NOW TWINTAILS, THAT'S SOME A+++ SHIT
So very retarded
>So very retarded
How is that refuting my point?
In Twintain, it's satire sentai up the ass, not serious, and completely fun.
There are a lot of stupid inconsistencies, stupid conveniences for the plot and characters who do nothing because muh tradition while others actually are worthless and show how lackluster the Takuni anime shit really is.
Shit like Benten just randomly being so beautiful that it's literally a plot point and the father decides to kill himself, wasting his family because muh honor, or how the Friday fellow are meant to be this sort of Illuminati type but are just boring day job workers barely anywhere high up. One owns a chain of hotels, the other is a professor. Wow, so influential. Or how the brother just out of nowhere backstabs his brother. Or how CONVENIENTLY the daughter was there to listen to pass on what happened.
Or how Benten just decides to go back with the old man at the end for no reason.
It's boring, stupid, lackluster and worthless.
I'd go almost so far to say that Twintail is AOTD by how much it's near perfect in every regards except maybe animation. Tanuki is just shit. Overrated as fuck.
sidonia no kishi
Or how all the Tanuki seem to have a sort of clan reputation, honor and power, having so far as having servants doing shit for them at their meeting, yet somehow being less powerful than the fucking Friday Fellow.
>Gokukoku no Brynhildr
>forgetting that Kill la Kill aired into 2014
>listing anything above it
How those clothes treating you, pigs? You nice and comfy?
>Shirobako (everything P.A. Works touches is gold)
>(everything P.A. Works touches is gold)
Clothes are what make humans.
Without clothes, we would be animals.
They're all boring shit.
That rooftop discussion about some boring guy who likes to eat just shows that exactly.
He's just some random guy who likes food. Soooo impressive.
I'm sure it's made to show that we're all human and no one is really special but it just showed that the Friday Fellow were really nothing at all.
How can there be a balance of power if one side is literally nothing?
You have nothing to add to the conversation.
Maybe you just like shallow shit and think it's deep.
If the only retort is that it's 2deep4u while ignoring actual criticism, it just shows how shallow the show really is.
You'd have to actually show which parts of my criticism aren't criticism to your shit standards.
But that would mean you actually addressing the shit the show actually tries to shove.
>They're all boring shit.
Do you have the attention span of a 5 year old?
>That rooftop discussion about some boring guy who likes to eat just shows that exactly.
>He's just some random guy who likes food. Soooo impressive.
Wow, it's almost like the antagonists of the show aren't actually bad guys or something, that was really hard to understand.
>How can there be a balance of power if one side is literally nothing?
Gee, I don't know, probably because the other side are fucking animals. There's a balance of power of the NEET without any fucking social pull and a fucking lion too, because one is a fucking animal and the other is a human being.
2deep4u doesn't even imply the show is deep, it implies you're a fucking moron who doesn't understand what's presented to you. The best part is when these same morons talk about the show like it was so easy to understand when they don't even have the most basic understanding of it themselves.
Probably the onlycontender I'd put up there is Ping Pong
Hanayamata, Fate, Barakamon, Nozaki-kun and Kisejuu are maybes, there haven't been a lot of 9 or 10/10 shows this year but quite a bit of 8/10s and really good comedys lately.
/a/ will never admit that Madoka Magica was AOTY 2011 because of bias towards the excruciatingly bad fanbase and it's overwhelming popularity just like a lot of the charts on here stray away from other obvious choices because of the fear of being labeled as a pleb.
then again, what is even the point of AOTY? Everyone had a favorite anime this year, whether others agree with yours or not is ultimately irrelevant.
Only pro would be discovering anime you might have missed
>Wow, it's almost like the antagonists of the show aren't actually bad guys or something, that was really hard to understand.
More like they aren't interesting. Do you even have reading comprehension?
>There's a balance of power of the NEET without any fucking social pull and a fucking lion too, because one is a fucking animal and the other is a human being.
No there isn't. They never show us how or why that balance is needed.
Of course /a/ won't suggest something that was popular, it would destroy the thread. Just look at this one. People constantly keep mentioning Mushishi which is probably the least watched show this season, having even less viewers than something like Garo, while practically no one in this thread will even dare mention Fate.
people watched jungle wa itsumo???? what the fuck
also best milf
Since HxH finished this year
does it count?
Honorable mention Casshern?
That was god fucking awful.
It was pure fucking sadshit dribble that mad me want to watch the creators die in a fire, which would have been filmed and swept the Oscars.
Those who hated it came into it prejudiced against the concept to begin with, there was no saving them.
Ping-Pong and Space Dandy S2, were the only good animes in the 2014. The biggest flop was G-reco or Mekakushitty
>inb4 responding to bait etc.
The only reason /a/ even caught attention of it was of the huge shitstorm about Urobutcher deciding to kill off a character early on.
Surprisingly, that was the thing that made Urobutcher famous and later repeated to try getting the same attention again.
Sidonia no Kishi
Mekaku city actors
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou
Zankyou no Terror
Seitokai Yakuindomo 2
Hoozuki no Reitetsu
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei
Danna ga Nani
The rest of the shows were mediocre or bad.
Potential winner tier:
>Sidonea no Kishi
>Shingeki no Bahamut
Not potential winner tier:
Sora no Woto is in my top 10 and even I know it wasnt the best of 2010. Durarara and Panty and Stocking shouldnt be up there for a futher extent.
You are forgiven.
>Nichijou but not Nichibros
I take that back
No. Is that Utakoi? This is good.
It should be Uchouten Kazoku
I 'caught onto it' by a friend saying that they liked it.
I got zero description.
His word alone will make me check something out, but I regularly tell him he likes shit.
I was pleasantly surprised to actually like it.
I haven't watched Space Dandy or Ping Pong, but everyone seems to love it so I'll mention it.
Besides those 2 potential candidates, my vote goes to Mushishi.
>cliched shounenshit sports story
>uglier than the shit I drew in kindergarten
>mediocre voice acting and unmemorable soundtrack
>shallow, cliched characters with shonenshit-cliche development
If I wanted to make a predictable, unoriginal show for hipsters about terribly drawn chinks playing gay tennis for people too unathletic to run, I wouldn't because it would be SHIT.
>go to post my objectively official AOTY chart
>someone already posted it
My nigga. I haven't decided on 2014 yet but it'll probably be Mushishi with Barakamon and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun as runner ups.
Ping Pong a shit.
Nigga, I've seen every SoL anime ever made. I'm the motherfucking SoL Fucking Master, got my technique down and everything, don't be fallin' asleep or nothin'. NNB is a masterpiece nigga.
Isn't Mushishi sort of disqualified since it's the continuation of a previously aired series?
If I had to pick something else, I'd take Space Dandy over Ping Pong - both had great visuals, sound, and storylines. Neither had particularly complex charactization, but that can be more easily forgiven in Space Dandy which was strictly episodic, so I enjoyed it more than I did Ping Pong.
Too high, can't remember.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
are you shitting me
Too high, can't remember the name.
This is clearly a joke, right? No one was watching it, it was niche. That doesn't equate to good, unless you're here I guess. Hyouge mono or something.
Really? The Tanuki antics was pretty well done, it was a bit artsy in presentation, don't understand why it's AOTY though.
Madoka needs to be on the chart. How is that even debatable? It was great, people on /a/ made a fucking religion for it. Despite what it is NOW, as far as fan base and shit, is not relevant. You people are so fucking obtuse when it comes to being hipsters and selectively cynical. Eat shit.
I did. I don't believe that just being some sort of objective "good" is the only criteria up for judgment when justifying an anime's place as AOTY. It should also take into account /a/ itself, /a/'s AOTY. What got the most quality, quantity, etc. of discussion? How -enjoyable- was it? etc.
If it was a really good show and 2 threads were made about it and it was watched by three people, is it still /a/'s AOTY?
It's an exaggeration, but only to demonstrate the flaw in that logic. At least as far as I understand it, I could be mistaken somewhere.
Cross Ange. Everything else pales in comparison.
dandy was good anime, this was great art
don't be mad
Here is the non troll official AOTY list
2002: Chobits (not a very good year)
2004: Major s1
2005: Major s2
2006: Code Geass R1
2007: Spice and Wolf
2008: Clannad AS (Great year)
2009: TM 8.0
2012: Kids on the Slope
2013: Ippo Rising
2014: Ping Pong
AOTY for year N should be decided no earlier than N + 0.5. The Winter anime of 201x don't get the same opportunity to sink in as the other seasons' anime. Just because 2014 is ending doesn't mean we have to immediately decide on AOTY. Give it a bit people, good critics and reviewers do not publish, or rather, pass off their immediate thoughts as their final criticism and judgement on something. They take their time and sit on it for a bit lest they adulterate the sanctity and principle of professional criticism.
Considering my long years anime watching experience, as well as wide range of aspects that make a good anime, I have concluded that AOTY 2014 is in fact none other than Nobunagun, which, surprisingly, is not mentioned at all in this thread.
Well anyway, there you have it. Go home everyone.
2000: didn't watch
2001: didn't watch
2002: tachikoma, hell yeah
2003: bolt grab.jpg, very good
2004: didn't watch or read the manga
2005: Hazukashii serifu kinshi!
2006: Hmmm, I think my eyes are wrong, I'm not seeing Haruhi there. Great series, can't wait for S3 ;_;
2007: dropped because of /a/
2008: didn't watch
2009: OVA series, movie manga, all good
2010: Endless Eight done right
2011: That's a joke, right?
2199: Need to watch the remake, only watched the first episodes of the old series
2013: The first one that I don't know... but I didn't watch much anime lately
2014: And the new AOTY award goes to...
as I said, not watching much anime lately
>read this thread
>bunch of shit that nobody ever cared about and only ever seem to suspiciously pop up in AOTY threads
No surprises there.
The only other serious contended is Steins;Gate, but that didn't really have as much staying power. But yeah I'm sure whatever hipster shit you'd pick will be remembered.
>people actually suggesting Penguindrum
Looks like Gochiusa winning by a landslide
>Was kind of disappointed by mushishi.
Keep in mind that Mushishi is still a manga adaptation.
I mean, for season one they were able to pick up the best stories and put them toghether alternating the themes in them.
With S2 they didn't have choice, and adapted the rest of the manga. It was bound to be "not as good as S1" from the start, as it's either using the weaker stories and doesn't have as many of them to play around to keep the show fresh every week.
Heh, I do like Cross Ange.
Ching Chong felt unnecessarily short and incomplete as well.
>A shitty harem
Fake and gay, it was about the guy and his illness, not getting any girl because the curse, but liking only one from the beginning to the end.
It's a toss-up between Ping Pong & Nozaki-kun for me. I'm not considering Fall shows since they haven't finished yet.
Honestly this was a pretty shit year. I'm glad Fall came to the rescue.
This is pretty much what I'd choose. I'd add Garo, Samurai Flamenco, and either Inari Konkon (sweet and heartwarming, stellar production values, so-ending) or Hanayamata (sweet and heartwarming, medium production and recycled shots, amazing ending).
I really loved Zvezda too, but I acknowledge that it has enough imperfections that it probably doesn't deserve a spot.
>thinking space dandy is good
Jesus christ, kill yourself
That isn't what is going on. Things just belong to the season they first air in regardless of when they finish. So something starting in 2013 and finishing in 2014 could be AOTY 2013 but not 2014. It is the same way disc sales get categorized and seasonal charts get drawn up everything works on that system.
2000: The Big O
2002: Azumanga Daiou (runner-up: Haibane Renmei)
2003: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
2004: Paranoia Agent
2005: Samurai Champloo (runners-up: Air, Windy Tales)
2006: Mushishi (runners-up: Ergo Proxy, Aria the Natural)
2007: Kanon (runners-up: Mononoke, TTGL)
2008: Detroit Metal City (runners-up: Mouyuo no Hako, Aria the Origination)
2009: Aoi Hana, Eve no Jikan
2010: The Tatami Galaxy
2011: Carnival Phantasm, Kyousougiga web series
2012: Kyousougiga TV
2013: Shinsekai Yori
It's lackluster and the humor is just so badly handled most of the time, though. It has a bad case of explain-every-joke disease, and the tsukkomi are dry and not even funny. Smile not found and Jimeko's episode were the only times I've laughed out loud.
>Kokkuri is AOTY easily, but this year was utter trash anyway.
I wish MAL organized shows by which season they aired in. I only use it for list keeping, for these specific reasons when I need to look back on what I watched each season and how I felt about it.
>the show was garbage
If the final yosakoi routine didn't give you chills you're inhuman.
Anyway, my choices would be these.
music: Hanayamata, Gugure! Kokkuri-san, Samurai Flamenco OP1
animation: Space Dandy, Zankyou no Terror
overall: Psycho-Pass, Barakamon, Zvezda
music: Sidonia, Barakamon, Shirobako
animation: Shingeki no Bahamut, Samurai Flamenco ED2
overall: Space Dandy, Zvezda, Kill La Kill ED2
Oh shit, I forgot GAROOOOOOOO. Favorite OP in every category.
2000: NieA Under 7
2001: Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru
2002: Princess Tutu
2005: Ichigo Mashimaro
2006: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
2007: Hidamari Sketch
2008: Hidamari Sketch X 365 (Without second seasons Spice and Wolf)
2009: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) (Without second seasons FMA Brotherhood)
2010: Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (Without second seasons Shinryaku! Ika Musume)
2011: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
2012: Inferno Cop
2013: Love Lab
2014: Gugure! Kokkurisan
Noragami is my AOTY
This guy gets it.
Honorable mentions to Mushishi, Haikyuu, Hoozuki no Reitetsu and Ping Pong.
>AOTS this season is Kokkuri-san. I'm surprised no one voted for it.
Same. I feel the humor is pretty good.
I totally lost my shit with the whole Yamamoto episode.
>People here literally think Chaika the meme princess, Aldnoah.zero/10, Zankyou no Shitty, No Cancer No Life are legitimate contenders for AOTY
Hurrhurr I remember when I had watched under 50 animes :)
Reminder that if you haven't watched at least 200 series and 50+ movies you have absolutely no right to think you can have a valid opinion on what is good and what isn't.
Go work on that backlog, plebs.
This board is casual and disgusting.
ahahahahaha omg I would kill myself if my taste was this bad
I hope you've watched under 20 series and Aldnoah was your first mecha because that is the only way I could believe someone has taste this bad
Not so much about numbers, I would think that after seeing 200+ series and a pile of movies one would have a pretty good grasp on every genre of anime and have had seen all the most famous/influential/cream-of-the-crop anime from at least 1990 onward
This is exactly how I feel.
I'm a massive Yuasa-tard, but I can't help but prefer Space Dandy S2. It was literally perfect.
My 2014 ratings so far
nah, im 33. nge was my first mecha back in 95.
i stopped caring and pretending long ago. i rate series on a whims. gave mahouka 10 ironically because i love Jesus. as for aldnoah i'll probably lower it if s2 un-kills the main duo, but i just want to believe for a while.
Where my Barakamon niggas at
I enjoyed it a lot, and the OP and ED were great. I don't think there was anything of a magnitude which was bad about it.
Ping Pong and Mushishi are the only correct answers. Dandy had some of the highest highs of the year and the lowest lows, a bit conflicted on that front. Still need to finish Barakamon.
Aldnoah was the definition of wasted potential. The moment butch stopped writing for it (post ep. 3) it went completely into the shitter. We go from a super interesting mech design and believable scenario where a random bro outsmarts an overconfident opponent to random bro being literally the only competent fighter in earth's forces and super duper mysterious aldnoah powers being confined to rocket punches and TWO swords.
And don't fucking get me started on Slaine. I'm not sure what you see in the series, anon.
i may partly agree about wasted potential. aldnoah went 'popcorn' route where it could go LOGH way exploring political aspects of conflict.
still i had fun with it nevertheless.
Same here. I never thought in my life a sports anime would drive me on the verge of tears.
>"My blood tastes like iron"
sports anime are mostly above average and not seldom very good. competition is good formula for a story.
all i've watched recently made strong impact. cross game, chihayafuru.
even baby steps and ace of diamonds are fun to watch.
Barakamon was great, summer AOTS definitely, and in any other year it would have been a contender for AOTY, but there was just too much other great stuff this year.
It's in my personal top 5, though.
Popularity =! quality. Because if it did, fucking Transformers would have won Best Picture at the Oscars four times over. If you enjoyed something popular yet brain dead or devoid of artistic merit, that's great. Most people do. Mistaking that schlock for actual quality is hilaribad.
