Hope I'm not late on this.
Last night at the movie theater I saw the trailer for this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IdMPpKMdcc

The whole time I was thinking, this looks like a dubbed anime that I've seen before.

It says that it is based on a Marvel comic of the same name.
But after looking up stuff about the comic it does not seem to have much in common with the movie.

MC in both is Japanese boy genius who builds robot named Baymax.

But after that the comic sounds pretty dark and he teams up with a cast of government agents and superheroes to fight a evil dragon made up of the souls from the atomic bomb attack victims.

In movie MC builds gear that gives his friends powers to help him fight super villain in a kabuki mask.

The writers for both the comic and movie are all Gaijin but the whole production comes off looking like a CGI anime.

What do you think?
Haven't you seen this before?
>>
>>115767552
But the comic and the movie have pretty much nothing in common story wise.

What are you asking? If you're asking if western movies have ever stolen the concept of an anime, it has happened tons of times before. Stealth ripped off Macross Plus, The Matrix was heavily inspired (and blatantly copied) Ghost in the Shell, Avatar was heavily inspired by Naruto, etc. And don't even get me started on the dozens of blatant copies of Miyazaki in Disney movies.
>>
They've been rolling out a lot of promo stuff for this film in Japan - inflatables and cardboard standees - so I guess if it is incredibly similar to something Japanese imageboards will have begun ripping into it already.

The only thing I can think of is Medabots and that terrible Korean CGI thing Cubix.

it's anime inspired cartoon movie, whats your point?

it's comonly known that lasseter has huge respect for Miyazaki and ghibli. would be such a huge surprise if people at pixar and disney was filled with weabos?

looks to me that theyve done movies homaging video games , old disney movies and now its comics and manga's turn.

Honestly cant be more excited for it. Loved wreck it ralph and most pixar movies.

Wow, vague plot points make it a ripoff now?

Disney animatiors themselves admit to copying Miyazaki. Movies like Treasure Planet and Atlantis blatantly copied Miyazaki. No to mention The Lion King being a point by point retelling of Kimba The White Lion with crappy Shakespeare thrown in.

>The entire anime and manga industry was created by a guy ripping off Disney.

Taking inspiration is not the same as 'ripping off'. Tekuza had just as much influence from early turn of the century comics and movies like Metropolis. He didn't blatantly take a Disney movie like Dumbo and remake it. Yet every major film by Disney has been a remake of a famous story by someone else, with very few exceptions (like Lilo and Stitch). For fuck sake, Atantis was a complete copy of Nadia. Which itself was ripped off from Laputa.

And none of this has anything to do with 'animation quality'.

You're seriously not trying to say that the gif you posted is a good example of that, are you?

Japan's animation can, and there are times where they've done better. The problem is that their animation isn't consistently smooth. But consistently smooth and detailed animation is expensive as fuck and is really only reserved for big corporate studios.

The west did give us the Thief and the Cobbler though, and that's the most painstakingly detailed animated movie ever, bar none.

Nadia's story was actually written by Miyazaki back in the early 70s. It was just shelved before being sold to NHK, who would go on to hire Gainax to make it.
And Anno was constantly fighting against NHK to make his own thing, but was constantly reigned in to follow Miyazaki's blueprint. Until the end when he went full ALIENS and SPACE SHIPS and BIBLE IMAGERY. He cited that part of what sent him into his depression that lead to Eva was his frustration with the lack of creative control on Nadia.
>>

>>
>>115777108

Snow White was an early attempt at rotoscoping. They couldn't do a complete 1:1 transition because Disney was basicaly pioneering new forms of animation in the late 1930s.

However, later movies like Sword in the Stone or Jungle Book did use straight rotoscoping. And looked even worse than the early Disney movies as a result.

its pointless to argue about all this though since there's an anime equivalent to every animation style. They've done it all, from rotoscoping to traditional cel drawings to 3D CGI crap.
>>
Disney made better animation (before threy went full cgi), and even family guy is funnier than the average nip anime comedy. Only thing they have going in their favor is mecha shit because the white man has long realized that humanoid robots are stupid, especially in space.

I've been pretty excited to see this since viewing the trailer. It looks like a better than average animated film.

From what OP described, calling it a rip off sounds a bit harsh. I don't see a problem with them taking inspiration from Japanese anime. Filmmaking does not exist in a bubble and neither do ideas (about story telling, cinematography and of course what is commercially viable).

If it had copied scene for scene or blatantly ripped an entire plot from a different movie that would be different.

The animation is smoother, but only because they're character designs are shitty simple childrens' scribbles like pic related. It's far easier to animate.

Not that it really matters either way. 2D is dying internationally, so all all of today's 2D shows can't be compared with some of the work that aired in the mid nineties and earlier. This is regarding both eastern and western animation, for your information.

There was plenty of "shoujo" shit in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. There's also that upcoming French production called Lady Bug or something. Though I guess you could say that that one is more magical girl than shoujo.

What about all of Bruce Timm's work? Batman the Animated Series, Superman, Justice League... all of that shit looks great. The Spider-Man cartoon from the 70s? Not so much.

In general I think American cartoons do animate at a higher frame rate than Japanese ones and actually care about lip flaps. This seomtimes means you have shows like Airbender with amazing, fluid fight scenes rather than your Japanese variety. On the flip side, anime has come up with awesome camera angles to make things dynamic.

As with most things, I think the question of which has better quality/budget is simply: it depends.

Pretty sure most of them are disqualified because the faces alone. Large eyes and small/no noses are pretty common, but not anatomically correct.

Everybody knows that western humour is either shitty references to current events and pop culture, or graphical shit everybody over the age of 10 has grown tired of.

The french are just as perverted as the Nipps. This is very good news.

To be honest, it's the only big-budget western-animated movie I've been looking foward to in the last couple of years.

Frozen was overrated crap, Wreck-It-Ralph was mediocre and also overrated and HTTYD2 was flat out terrible. At least Paranorman and Ernest and Celestine were good.
>>

I thought Lady Bug was suppose to be animated not turned into CG?
>>

Ypu make it sound like thats a fucking good thing. that siwitch has made all anime inorganic, bright colored puke that have taken all variety out of all tipes of animation,.

Common /co/ have some dignity... Dont you have some webcomics to read? I heard that men in spandex are really popular now. If you dont hurry tumblr is going to take over your board.
>>
>>115777641

Are you implying western 'references' are not just 'how close can we talk about sex without actually admitting it'

At least Japanese shows will blatantly point it out. Watching an American or British show is just all innuendo and no development.
>>
>>115777641
High-brow humor isn't as entertaining
>>
How is this /a/ related?

Is it fine now to make /tv/co/ related series threads with a OP that simply says how it's kinda similar to an anime that may or may not existed.

It sure helps.

No one is claiming that to be a good thing. He just refute that other guy's claims about anime being stagnant. Holy fucking shit.
>>
>>115777779

America did the exact same thing in the late 90s, early 2000s. All 2D animation is digital. That is, for the 10% of western animation that is actually 2D anymore. All the rest is 3D puke that looks far worse than anything Japan makes.

I just want to feel special, okay? Not like all the guys in school bullying me because of my haruhi t-shirt.

Married With Children
Friends
Frasier
Big Bang Theory

Take your pick. Sex is always the biggest subject in western comedies.

Anime has the best background art

You should be shamed if you ever went to school in a haruhi shirt.
>>

Not anymore, they scrapped the anime-French/Japanese co-production since western suits and execs firmly believe that 2D can't sell anymore in the west.

So they went generic 3D animation style instead.

But most american cartoons dont have laugh tracks.

what comedic american have them?

none from seth mcfarlane , nor the simpsions or the the other fox shows, nor south park or those at adult swim.

I can't think of any shows with laugh tracks on besides Big Bang shit and Two and a half Tiger Blood.
>>
>>115777974

You're arguing between types of shows. A laugh track is not used on animation because there's no audience viewing it. Though some shows like Simpsons and Family Guy did put laugh tracks in to parody live sitcoms.
>>
>>115778009
What? You can't draw a straight line?
>>
>>115777974
laugh tracks in an animated series would make even less sense than having laugh tracks generally, because no show is filmed before a live audience anymore anyways.

>people who are a consumer of a particular medium cannot have valid concerns regarding them

>>115777753
You didn't like HTTYD2? Same here. But why? IMO the movie's story was horribly ruined by Hiccup's deadbeat mother who doesn't suffer for abandoning her family to go on a hippie crusade essentially. Reminded me of The Simpsons with Homer's mother who also abandoned her family for hippie activist bullshit reasons. I hate that shit especially when they don't treat such females like the pieces of shit that they are.
>>
>>115778068

Family Matters
Step by Step
Saved by the Bell
Seinfield
Cheers
Frasier

Most single camera Sitcoms have a laugh track. But they're live action.

The directors for Big Hero 6 aren't the same people who did Dang-It-Bobby or those shitty princess cash grabs.

Paranorman was Laika and Ernest and Celestine is a French production.

Yes they are. People hate Big Bang Theory to death for its laughing. But it is filmed in front of a live audience. Look it up.

This. Its one of the reasons Western animation will never rival anime. How many times can you do a Batman cartoon where the Joker cannot kill anyone unless its a special expensive Blue Ray one shot movie? That shit's obnoxious and difficult to take seriously.
>>
>>115778088
That's not true. Almost every big name sitcom is still filmed in front of a live audience. How I Met your Mother isn't.

The mother was essentially useless, the story felt uninspired (Dragons are/aren't mindless monsters was already done with the first movie, DW needs to find a new premise already) and they amped up the cliches by 10. Not that the first HTTYD wasn't already cliche and typical, but they managed to twist the cliches in such a way where they didn't feel shoehorned in and it managed to feel natural. That wasn't the case with HTTYD2.
