Baldr Sky actually has a good chance of being translated, it's only real challenge is how fucking LONG it is. It is among my favorite games of all time and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I did when Futsuu is finished translating it.

Dies Irae will never be translated, and if it is you will not want to read that translation. Better learn Japanese so you can read the most incredibly grandiose battle royale I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
>>
>>115767686
machine translations are pretty bad. It's fine to look up specific words you don't know, but if you just machine translate everything doesn't come out very good. You can get the basic idea of what's going on, but you'd be better off trying to learn japanese imo

>>
>>115768082
It's not that VN translations have been murdered, it's just that many people don't have the time for it anymore. VNs are long, and you need to have programmers and image editors to do a proper translation release.
>>
>>115768224
We have those things en masse, it's ONLY a matter of generating enough interest.

I still remember back in 2009-10, when the scene was alive and TLWiki had actually active projects -- but then JAST licensed all N+ games and not only forbid people from working on them, but also never gave them the treatment they deserved (read: being released).

After years of C&Ds and projects being strangled out of existence, it's not a surprise that the interest on visual novels died out and now the same cocksuckers who killed them are scared of releasing.

Reminder that Sumaga has been on "editing" for almost four years now.

I don't know how a native would find it, but I had trouble with it 18 months in. It's hard for a variety of reasons, including the things you mentioned. The first 3 routes grow progressively more and more complex, and then it ends on Rea's route which is absolutely insane on every level.

It's not really something I would recommend reading until you're very confident in your skill with Japanese.

>>115768616

Monobeno uses all kinds of dialect and youkai terminology, no surprise that it didn't work with a MTL. It's a really good read even if you don't bother with the porn.

Just as a side note for anyone in general, don't bother trying to read any eroge with ATLAS or anything like it. JParser/MeCab is fine if you are just using it to look up kanji/vocabulary but ATLAS is flat out wrong like 90% of the time.
>>

Often times they're not being allowed to release it due to the Japanese developer taking issue with various aspects of the translation or programming. XSeed has discussed some of the other challenges in their blog, like character limits preventing them from accurately translating things or adapting Japanese software to English software so it runs in English applocale.

There's also the fact that, according to reports, that JAST will frequently retranslate games that have been fan-translated.

How many hours of studying moon would it take to be able to fluently read a VN?
>>
>>115769428
No, its usually minor things that they then latch onto as reasons to prevent release because no gaijin should be playing their games. Sometimes its major things, like a character's dialogue presenting an inaccurate image of the character.
>>
>>115769435
Didn't Dark Eye Translations say that they'd translate it after Kurukuru?
>>
>>115769717
Around of year of daily studies should be more than enough to get you started. It's not a matter of "how many hours", it's accepting that learning a new language is something you have to fit in your schedule and stick to it.

For example I was able to read Subarashiki Hibi with the assistance of a dictionary after roughly 5 months of studying grammar.
>>
>>115769717
Depends. If it's a short nukige, you probably don't need to know too much. SOL VNs tend to use simpler language, while anything with lots of technobabble can get fairly complicated.

Man, everytime I turn on the game I have this strong sense of nostalgia. The climax of the game was so memorable I don't think I'll ever forget it. Here, I found this in my pc in a a random .txt for some reason one of these days:

I think the way Baldr Sky handled multiple universes was much more interesting than usual. After you replay Nanoha and notice how amazing the foreshadowing of Sora handling every behind the scenes so as for Kou to stop the assembler is fucking amazing.
The concept of an original world that breaches and you only get to experience it in the end was far more interesting for me than, for example, MLA's idea of Takeru simply being thrown out in the middle of a war and being forced to adapt, even though they kind of work in different ways. The sensation of an incredibly extensive path, paved by hundreds of hours of gameplay (I guess I took much more than usual though, since I finished with more than 200), to culminate into "I am a machine built to save Sora", with Jihad playing in the background is something I won't forget for a long, long time. Kuu being added in the equation creates a big difference in my opinion, though. She's the essence of Baldr Sky, as in you see her evolving and maturing like a girl throughout each route, at the point of feeling jealous of Sora. Baldr feels very humanistic (just look at the whole Sora thing regarding Neunzehn) and deals with technological themes, not counting the many references to cyberpunk works, while, let's say, MLA focuses more in immersing the player within the emotions of Takeru. I guess my preference to Sky falls more down to personal opinion in the end. I'd rather feel some 熱 than 鬱. Chinatsu can eat a dick, though.

Depends on what you mean by 'fluently' and what title you want to read. Most moege are very easy with titles like Eustia, Baldr Sky and SubaHibi being slightly more difficult.

If you want to read games like Dies, Asairo, Saihate no Ima, Senshinkan, etc then you're gonna need a lot longer and a lot more skill.

>>115769899

VNs are perfect for that. Pick an easy title and start reading today, Favorite's new title AstralAir is very easy, plenty of moe and sort of an interesting story to boot.

Also uh I kind of recommend you don't use chiitrans. Using any kind of MT is a bad idea in my opinion. The path is hard but there are not actual "shortcuts".
>>

I personally really love the Steampunk series but really, one of the main reasons to why is the actual writing. The translations were very weak and removed a lot of the charm for the series in my opinion, the repetition never really bothered me when I read other games from the same series. Although Sharnoth is considered to be one of the weakest. Sona-Nyl, on the other hand, is amazing. It's a shame it won't be translated, though. I do recommend you to give Gahkthun a try when Koestl finishes translating it, since he's putting all of his soul into making it as faithful as the original.

Inganock is great in it's own right, my favorite Steampunk title by far. Ixrec completely fucked it up though. I don't really blame people for disliking it, since he completely failed to carry over Sakurai's writing style and that's a big part of what made it so special for me.

Baldr Sky would have definitely been the best choice, I have a hard time believing many people would actively dislike it in the western fanbase. It also doesn't have fancy writing, someone like Ixrec could probably do a pretty good job with it so long as they accurately convey the information.
>>
Does anyone really play VNs for the story? I've been playing just Nukige for about a year now and I'm kind of looking for some non-teenager stories.
>>
I started reading VNs when all we had was DVD vns with horrible password system and shitty zyx games where all characters looked the same in every game. Oh and babbys first VN YMK.

I think the only remotely good thing was Ever17.
I was so happy when the first newer translated VNs like Chaos;Head showed up. It wasn't that good but it didn't look ancient at least. Also dat underwater ray romano vn.

Oh and I almost forgot about the Hongfire NTR brasilian whose name I forgot.

Then i search for this game majikoi. (if that number of people are asking for it, it "have" to be good) (I thought) and it wasn´t wrong, the game was great : D
>specially this wanko route, it made me cry TwT
>and the others routes too, this majikoi history is a majestic little peace of art! and it dosn´t bothered me that the other routes aren´t translated, because i have been studing japanese for a half decade now.

>>
>>115773061

His English is absolutely horrendous and his knowledge of Japanese is questionable, to say the least. Fuwanovel is notorious for shit like this where they have retards attempting to translate things way above their level and it fails every single time. If you wonder why nobody has mentioned the Majikoi "project" it's because there is a 95% chance it will not happen, and if it does it will be terrible.

Fuwanovel is probably the worst community of people in the western VN scene, feel free to dismiss anything you hear regarding them.
>>
>>115761653

Not OP, but I can read Japanese and prefer to read shit in English. It's my native tongue and is always a labour to rearrange the Japanese in my head when I read it. Maybe if I grew up a bilingual speaker, it would probably be easy, but as a second language I only read Japanese when I have to.
>>
>>115773037
It's not. Japanese is a topic prominent language. English is a subject prominent language. There is no way to automatically fill in the missing parts without understanding the context as a whole.

Fuwanovel is basically Hongfire, but ashamed of using machine translation so they all pretend like they're not so people don't make fun of them. It's a bunch of ESL Taiwanese and South Americans who can't tell when either English or Japanese is fucked up. Every project on there is a fucking mess from the ground up and every single thing they've produced, from their uncensoring of KonoSora to the partial of Koiken Otome has been a train wreck. The best they can hope for is that one of the 'editors' can cover it up enough to hide the obvious machine TL.

Learn kana, and then read all of Tae Kim's guide. After that you could start out with some manga or VNs. With this method you'll be able to read some top tier titles in maybe five or six months, or more. By the other method (learning things formally), Maybe ten months to 1 year? Or more, depending on how it is. But with the latter your knowledge will be much more solidified. It really depends on how much effort you put into it anyway. These are just estimates I'm making by considering you're someone who puts effort into it, which might not be exactly right.

Sayooshi is extremely fucked up, I really enjoyed it. Very nice writing, and incredibly raw in places. It's atmosphere is very heavy and the portrayal of insanity is vivid and makes you feel like you're right there with the protag losing your mind. Mahoyo is ~1.3mb of text which is very short for a Type-Moon game, but not really all that 'short' by normal standards. It's actually longer than Sekien no Inganock.

Mahoyo is an awesome read and the fights are pretty damn out of this world, but it's got a metric fuckton of SoL. I personally enjoyed it and thought was incredibly atmospheric and comfy, but I can certainly see others disliking it because of that.

I definitely should not have went into the VN/game translation world with that naive mindset thinking that because something might be possible, that I should definitely do it without really thinking about how many things could go wrong along the way. I don't translate but I honestly don't have any clue to know if I regret taking up my current project and heading the group as a non-translator and only useful as a technical guy who solved only 90% of the problems with trying to get the game to work. I definitely did enough homework IMO or I would not have gotten as far as I did with the people I have and what I've done.

It's been a bitch to work with on the technical side to get the remaining 10% to work and stressful when you are depending on other people since you can't translate and your best translators started their own sub group and can only dedicate so much time so I keep worrying about the quality of the translation and how people are going to bash it when it comes out, being the leader of the project.

Personally I think the easiest approach would be to get someone to rip the dialogue from the scene files. Then paste it into a google doc. Then just share the link with /a/. Then hopefully the few people on /a/ who know japanese can translate a line here or there and the rest can do the QC. Once it's in a satisfactory state clean up the google doc then reassemble/recompile the scene file.

"Crowd-translations" if you will.

The thing is even if I learned Japanese, I would still read VN at a absurdly slow rate or at least not as fast as I read English. I'd rather not since the VN I do want to read are like 50 hours+ at a fluent level. Too much time and effort really.

Sometimes that works, but it often fails just as well. LNs are tiny compared to VNs, and anime/manga is tiny compared to LNs. Plus, with LN/anime/manga, you can release in parts, so it's not 6+ months before you have anything decent to show for it. It's a week or two at most.

Pretty much, also fuck translation group drama.
>MFW tried translation
>MFW it was with cudder
>All but one fellow translators were retards
>Cudder is even worse

It won't. SP may very well once people get sick of their Kickstarter shit, but Jast is a side project for J-List so it doesn't matter if it does well or not, and MG is wholly owned by a conglomeration of Japanese companies, so it'd take all of them going under to kill it.

>MG is wholly owned by a conglomeration of Japanese companies

Huh, that's new to me.

It's always in the perpetual state of dying. At least for the one by fans.
>>
>>115777131
Really? It was always the case. Overdrive used to be in charge of it, but after they almost went bankrupt from that utsuge disaster they released, it passed over to Hobibox.
>>
>>115777210
Nah, I just never realized that MG are actually run by Japanese.

Kouryuu is some English (I think) fucker who runs all the western side of things. He's MG's version of Makoto. It only takes a brief look at his ask.fm to see that he's a fucking moron who should have no business running anything and especially not their PR.

Kouryuu is cool.
Dovac is shit.

Yes.

Even my dog could read it.

It will be adapted next Fall

We will have to suffer through one winter without WA, but it will come back again. I believe in it.

Is it bad that I download a 100% save files and fap to the sex scenes in nukige before deciding if I'm interested in actually playing it?
>>
>>115776472
That's what /jp/ did for Flyable Heart and Hatsukoi. Look what happened.
>>
>>115778066
What happened?
>>
>>115778191
The same thing that happened to White Album 2 and Clannad's crowdsourced translations. Eventually, machine TL asshats moved in and took it over.

In Flyable Heart's case, it was even worse because Cudder set up a goddamned script to spam it, starting trolling people who were actually trying to contribute and deleting what they did, and threw months of gigantic shitfits when people started posting his parts and proof that they were machine translated.

You can suffer through SaeKano instead.
