"As expected, it's fun with a lot of people" is not something people say in a conversational context.

It is, in fact, not something something that anybody says ever.
>>
>>114904703
As a translator, I've always preferred more literal translations to those that take more liberties to make them sound "more natural." The problem I have with them is that you often end up changing things more than you should and using words that don't stay true to the original. There is nothing wrong with that sentence in any sort of objective way. It's perfectly fine to print in a newspaper or anywhere else for that matter.
>>
>>114904703
We've tried to stray away from adding things that aren't actually said in translation. I'm sure it could sound more natural but we weren't sure on how to make it sound more natural.

>>
>>114904846
As a translator, I say that any translator worth his salt knows it's not a trade-off between literalosity and naturalness. If you are translating natural, conversational Japanese to anything but natural, conversational English, you are not doing your job.

Oh shit, Guyver is still ongoing?

As of February 2013, Guyver Advocacy implemented a change in their method of operations. Previously the group had operated on faith that people would buy the manga or related products, however due to circumstances, this had to change. It became ever more apparent that Manga Aggregation sites were taking the produced work and hosting it on their own servers to profit from it via their ad revenues. This was completely counter to the entire point of the Guyver Advocacy mission so much discussion ensued. The result of this discussion was the Pre-order system.
>The Guyver Advocacy group no longer Releases Translations or Scanlations to the public. Instead, the group take pre-orders of the next volume, the volume which currently released chapters will be contained in. The people who pre-order this next volume will be given individualised Scanlations of the chapters. To clarify, all chapter which are currently being released in monthly Shonen Ace, will make up the next volume to be released. By pre-ordering the next volume, the person will essentially gain the right to read those chapters. The Scanlations that are provided are tracked via various methods, in such a way that any person who leaks this chapter to the public, i.e. people who aren't paying for it, will be caught out and blacklisted. The obvious aim is of course to make sure the series creator gets what he deserves and also increase the odds of more Guyver productions. This is completely in line with the Mission of Guyver Advocacy.
What the fuck.

Red Hawk has a pretty good beginner's guide. OP, if you're still here, the best way to typeset is to keep your fonts consistent and readable, and follow the original Japanese typesetting as a guide. Ideally you want to try to get your typesetting to match as closely to the original as you can, within reason. Here's an example with the original text visible.

You talking about the image coming through from the other side? I still have no idea how to deal with that easily. I've tried all sorts of blending methods using the other side of the page and nothing really works. You just have to do it manually.

Ideally you just get better scans. You can put something behind it like a piece of card stock paper or something to prevent that.

The most important thing is that text is clearly and easily readable. Sometimes that means you have to use a hyphen, but they should be avoided as much as possible as long as it isn't excessively ruining the silhouette of the text grouping.

The formatting on the left is fucking stupid, of course I'm going to choose the right bubble since they actually utilized the space of the bubble in a non fucking stupid way.

Here's a cherry picked counter example that's far too extreme to mean anything.

First bubble
>Ah, let me explain. I'm Yato, an apprentice theologist. I've been on a journey to train myself, and for that purpose, I'm trying to heal my eyes. I heard rumors that the ruins in this cave house a lake filled with magic, and that's why I'm here...

Schizanthus
>>
>>114913268
Left one is done intentionally bad, and I'd use smaller font size for right one. However, treating hyphens as some boogeyman is retarded. Shape does matter too, you know.
>>
>>114913268
The phrasing bothers me more than the typesetting, honestly, but the right one is kinda wide for my taste.
>>
>>114913241
blur it first. then level so you won't overlevel
then select the remain greys with color range.
>>
>>114913545
It's part of a bigger sentence, I believe.
>>
>>114913434
It's a general guide for general situations. In general, you want to try to avoid hyphens as much as possible. Sometimes you have no choice, such as when you have a particularly long word, e.g. 8+ letters long, and not a lot of space to fit it in. It's a general rule of thumb.

If you look at >>114911871 as an example, the third bubble has the "dar~ling~♪" hyphenated because the bubble is predominately vertically oriented. Not only is it a taller, narrower bubble, but Miia's ear intrudes on the bubble, further limiting horizontal real estate. If darling wasn't split in two lines, the entire shape of the text would have to be wider than there's space in the bubble that would allow for a uniform shape, or you'd have everything narrow and then the "dar~ling~♪" wide, which also looks like shit and breaks up the eye's flow during reading.
>>
File: Sidonia-p19.png (416KB, 810x720px) Image search: [iqdb] [SauceNao] [Google]
Sidonia-p19.png
416KB, 810x720px
>>114913713
Or, you can actually utilize the space of the bubble because no matter how much you fuck up the typesetting for the third bubble, the font is still going to be too small for the bubble. Consolidating the dar~ / ling~♪ lines into a single line would be fine, granted the rest of the lining of the bubble was changed to reflect the wider width, but in no way would it ruin the shape of the text within the bubble. I'm on / a date / with my / dar~ling~♪ breaks the line into even enough lines to be passable for the shape of the bubble.

So sure, while avoiding hyphenations works fine and dandy, it doesn't work well as a general rule. You forfeit the ability to do anything size related when you focus on avoiding hyphens, which has the potential to detract from the source material. Take for instance in this less contrived example. First large bubble reads something along the lines of
>Tanikaze! / Respond!!
Which if you try to fit in the bubble at a reasonable size granted the urgency of the text, does not fit.

>>
>>114914190

>>
>>114914268
what series is it?
>>
>>114914157
Yes, these are examples of instances where you'd need to use a hyphen. Every bubble there is tall and narrow, and the shape of the text groups are likewise tall and narrow. The point is that you use a hyphen when you HAVE to, but try to avoid them as best you can otherwise. The point isn't to never use a hyphen under any circumstance.

The dar~ling~♪ doesn't work because it is too wide for the rest of the line groups in that bubble. Regrouping them to better match the length of the da r~ling~♪ line makes the text group as a whole too wide for the bubble. Leaving the groups as is but putting dar~ling~♪ unbroken creates too much of a visual disconnect and interrupts the flow of the eye when reading.

Does this kind of text shaping look acceptable? Hyphen and apostrophe looks like shit if I were to do it simply vertically.
>>
>>114914753
Absolutely not. If you're going to do vertical text, and you should generally only ever use it for a bubble with 1-2 words at most, it should all be in one column. The alignment there is hideous, especially at the top. You also shouldn't copy Japanese punctuation verbatim. They tend to play it fast and loose with exclamation marks and ellipsis. One exclamation mark is all that you should use there. If you absolutely can't fit all of your text in there, then try to get as little overlap as possible at the top and bottom, and then give the text a thin white stroke, so that it's still readable over the bubble's borders.
>>
Guys, guys, guys, I literally just thought of using 200% horizontally scaled dashes to make fake EM DASHES!!!

Holy fucking shit! Everything looks so much fucking better now! I swear to fucking god, I'm so pissed I didn't think of this years ago, this could have saved me years of buttpain while I searched for fonts with actual proper dashes, because the nature of manga is that you end up using using the same short dash/hyphen thing for both separated words and interruptions and god fucking damn, does it look hideous that way.
>>

>>114914952
>emdashes
Brofist
>>
>>114914554
Did you even read that first paragraph? I feel like you just looked at the picture and made your comments based off of that.

I haven't said anywhere, in any of my posts, that I think avoiding hyphenations means removing your hyphen key. Even in my picture, un-hyphenated text could still fit perfectly fine without detracting from the "tall and narrow" bubble. So at that point, it's a matter of what qualifies the "need" to hyphenate. If the criteria that procs this need is simply tall, narrow bubbles, then something like a wide bubble shouldn't have the need to have hyphenated words granted they're all a reasonable length. So I guess it would be nice if the majority of bubbles in manga weren't tall and narrow.

As for this page, I was wrong about the darling line because it was just a bit too long.
>>
>>114914897
Apostrophe after "I" and "M" on next line doesn't look great, that's why I'm having kind of hard time with this one. Doing this simply horizontally leaves me almost no spare space left, and small font in a long narrow bubble on a panel that takes almost half of the page ain't great either. Stroking text and go over borders is bad in my book, so I can't do that too.
>You also shouldn't copy Japanese punctuation verbatim.
Hey, I'm just the guy who does shit in Photoshop, but I'll remember that.
>>
>>114915330
Yes, I read what you said. The font size of the originaljapanese text is the same from one bubble to the next, with the expection of the one bubble where darling is yelling and the one with the patterned デトッ text. In order to keep consistency, the English font size is also kept the same from one bubble of normal dialogue to the next. While the English text is smaller than the Japanese in the dar~ling~♪ bubble, it still keeps a consistent shape with the original japanese typesetting and consistent font styling with the rest of the English typesetting.

In the Sidonia panel, unless your font is exceedingly narrow or small, you can't fit "Tanikaze" without crowding the bubble, and you'd be trading in the original's vertical-dominant text for a horizontal.

>>114915436
I don't know the context without seeing the full page's script, but in a case like that I'd consir modifying the script. There are times when you have to change wording to make it fit the space better. You'll always want to do your best to preserve the intent of the original. That might mean cutting that bubble down to "s-sorry" or "f-forgive me" or whatever that works better and is consistent with the manner in which the particular character speaks.

Some of the wording seems awkward. I'm sorta guessing the original consisted of a lot of common phrases that don't really lend themselves to translation.

>Since you went through the trouble of coming here, let's eat together.
might work better as
>Since you're here anyway, let's eat together.
Though if you want to be somewhat more formal:
>Since you're already here, shall we eat together?

>Gladly
I'm guessing that was ittadakimasu in the original. When translating that, the standard is "Let's eat!"

>As expected, it's fun with a lot of people-
Odd phrasing for English. As much as using English idioms and set phrases pains me, you might be better served with:
>As they say, the more the merrier!

>Asabao-san, may I?/I'm fine.
I don't get this. Is the person on the right giving or taking food? If giving food:
>Asabao-san, try some./I'm fine.
If taking food:
>Asabao-san, may I?/Go ahead.

Not even that guy but as another translator, your focus should always be on making it flow and sound natural.

Transliterating is the most common trap fan-translators tend to fall into. They think keeping to the original meaning as close as possible is the most important thing to do. Of course, in a perfect world, there would be a good balance between the two and you'd have a sentence that sounds normal in English while nailing all the meanings and implications in the original language. But if you were forced to make a choice between making it sound good or keeping it closer to the original even if it sounds awkward, making it sound good should win 100% of the time.

TL notes explaining things are not OK. Sometimes the situation calls for it, like context for a joke that only Japanese people would know, and even then unless it's important to the plot so you can't do anything about it, you should be rewriting the entire joke/pun to something English readers would recognise and be familiar with.

Honorifics as well, to be quite honest, do very little other than indicate social position and attitudes between the speaker, using (or omitting) the honorific, and the subject, the person being referred to. When this is done, it can 99% of the time, with very few exceptions, be practically, smoothly, and informatively done in some way in English. Most of the time when it's just san, kun, or chan, it's the "default tone", and really doesn't confer any special meaning. Others such as sensei or senpai are just titles, that can either be inferred or stated easily.

Basically, if you are a translator, and you're leaving notes and honorifics in habitually, regardless of whether or not such difficult-to-translate situations come in, you're probably not very good at determining the meaning behind statements of characters and probably should not be translating. And you probably think too much in terms of 1 word = 1 word translation, also a mark of a terrible translator.
>>
The problem with translating is that most of the time, unless they are properly localized, you either lose meaning, or you're left reading a sentence that nobody in their right mind would actually speak in english.

Most fansub/scanlation groups are awful at making readable text, because there's this unfortunate notion among them that YOU MUST TRANSLATE EVERYTHING LITERALLY, which is a great way to get shit like, say, all of the dialogue in Gundam Wing (and the Gundam novels and Origin Manga, damn, have you read that garbage), Metal Gear Solid and Madoka. To be fair, they're not being paid or doing it professionally; they're doing it on their own time as fans so that should be appreciated, I guess.

Still, here's an example: Original - "こっ... この ひとが... わたしの すかあとを..."
Bad - "Th... This person... My skirt..."
Good - "H-He... pulled down my..."

Now that 'Bad' part was a little overdone and hit just about every possible mistake that could happen, but even so you'll see shit like this all the time.

This all brings me to something else as well, proof-readers/editors/quality checkers etc. They should not be touching a single letter or period. They should not be doing anything. You, as the translator, are responsible for your translation. If ever someone else is looking through your work and making changes, they better be another translator who's just crosschecking your work with the original raw to make sure everything's fine.

If you aren't able to read and write good English and the other language you shouldn't translating. Proofreading for mistakes and grammar is part of your job as a translator. Making things sound nice and flow naturally is part of your job as a translator.

Any groups with more than 2 people doing one manga is wasted effort. All you need is a translator and someone to clean/redraw. As long as both are able to do their jobs, the end result should be better than one with a thousand different editors having their input.

You can get the same or better results with a proofreader as long as they actually work with the translator to okay their changes instead of just changing everything and releasing. *Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui! Anthology (4 chapters left)

Outside of your opinion about honorifics, I agree with this post.

However, I also sympathize with occasional transliterating. Things like "as expected", or "it can't be helped" are often so familiar to the modern reader that it lets them know what's really being said better than "there's no denying that..." or "well, whatcha gonna do?" or something similar.

It reminds me of the days when I had to explain what a "tsundere" was to people when I used the word. I no longer have to and the ability to just use it is much better than having to equate it to something in English. Likewise, those admittedly awkward phrases are nearly the next best thing to simply leaving the text as "sasuga" or "shikatanai". Also, BECAUSE they're so awkward and well-known, they can even be used as an inside joke if the situation can accommodate one. So I like using them every now and then.

All this, of course, is disregarding the fact that the original Anon's sentence was pretty poorly written.

I don't unfortunately, the last one I've followed was years ago, but you can easily find a lot with a quick google search.

What I did for that page and similar aspect:
-set it to grayscale
-duplicate
-use blur/remove noise if needed
-lazily create a layer of levels
-decrease contrast so the lighter grays stay in
-create 2 layers of levels, one to check the whites and another to check the blacks
-go back to the first levels and set them properly while using the ones above to check as you do that
-remove dust and "make blacks black and whites white" (burn/dodge and paintbrush)
-remove/decrease bleeding by using burn/dodge with "midtones" range on low exposure

And sorry for the late reply, soup doesn't make itself.

Typesetting.

Typesetting. Bad cleaning is tolerable and the average reader probably doesn't care about redraws. Shitty typesetting can ruin the mood of a story though, more than bad cleaning or a redraw error.

It's because it's easy that anyone tries to do it. Even people that shouldn't.
That being said, it really isn't actually so simple. The fact that people do suck at it should be proof. It still takes creativity, a good eye, and some experience working with the program you're using.
It's just that in comparison to the other parts of scanlating (translating, cleaning, etc) it's comparatively easy.

Could not disagree more. Your views on honorifics are also awful.
>very little other than something that isn't very little
And no one has ever shown any sort of way to effectively convey this with the English script otherwise. You end up having them using slang when they aren't using slang instead or have them calling them by a nickname when they aren't using a nickname.

Basically, you're an awful translator for being so closed minded about these issues and if you were professionally translating something with that attitude you would probably be fired.

A lot of people who do all the work themselves prefer to type it out because they're still editing on the fly until the final product is finished, but if you're just typesetting you've gotten a script that's been looked over already. You want exactly what's there so you should copy it exactly.

The text in the first two bubbles is a bit too big. You should shrink it a little.
The "Itadakimasu" on the other hand, is too small. It looks like she's saying it in a small voice. I know you probably wanted to put it all on the same line, but you'd probably benefit from adding a dash and breaking the word up.
The rest looks good.

What's wrong with Anime Ace? I saw it as a recommended font several times earlier in the thread.

Also, I'm pretty sure I centered the text. Do you mean it's not centered in the bubbles properly? Because that was one of the things I was most curious about.

Yes, take the top right bubble for example, the text should be placed a little lower.
And Anime Ace is ugly as sin that's what's wrong with it.

I'm in need of a cleaner for YKK.

Learning how to clean. Long road ahead of me. Doesn't help that the tutorials are all from half a decade ago.

Not much has changed. Still no neural networks to help us clean.

In my search for the raws of Knights and Magic volumes I am practicing with the web novel for now.

We had a pretty good CN-Eng TL for the first volume, so honestly I mostly just want to do volume 2 as a stop gap until he gets his CN source,
