Anime, and media in general can only make me depressed momentarily. Because if something makes me so depressed that it would stick with me, it makes me realize that I'm capable of giving a shit, which is a nice surprise, and then I get kinda happy.

SaiKano ep:8 is my favorite episode of an anime, because it's the last time I cried.

The end of SaiKano disappointed me because the rest of the heartbreak of the series queued me up for a tragedy that it just couldn't deliver (Yes, Saikano put me in a mindset that a man being consciously aware that he is the end of life on Earth, that everything and everyone he ever loved is gone, and now he's going to die alone as the last remnant of humanity wasn't depressing enough for me)

I've yet to see or feel anything to match Akemi's impassioned and feeble desperation. I love it.

Yes, Gundam Wing. Specifically, Endless Waltz. For those who don't know, Endless Waltz ends with all the Gundams being thrown into the sun and narration to the effect of

>And weapons like Gundams were never seen again.

I was depressed for weeks about that garbage. How the fuck is "everlasting peace" a happy ending to an action series? How? Who could possibly write that garbage? The whole point of an action story is that we get to see heeros fight the good fight against evil. Hardship, suspense, loss, heartache, courage, comradely, sacrifice, blood, death, and victory - that's what kept us engaged the whole time. And at the end of it, when the characters ride off into the sunset and join their loved ones, we feel that they earned their rest. They are all the better for it. An ending where humanity finds eternal peace and all war is forever abolished is sickening. It's looking at the audience and telling us we were wrong to have enjoyed what we enjoyed. It's telling us it should have never happened and that human can and should rise above conflict.

What an awful ending.

Also, Heero and Relena didn't get together.

Even though I love Rayet and she is the best character I think it would have been fucking awesome if she blew her brains out in front of everyone here. I guess I just love the butcher and can easily deal with my favourite characters leaving the show... but I really enjoy tragic and depressive moments like that.
>>
>>114643986

>>
>>114637552

Good SoL I connected with used to get me the worst.

I'd even hold off watching the final episode as long as possible (normally 2 weeks). Then I'd often fall into a slump where I didn't want to watch or play anything.

Other than that I also get it when a season has been really, really shitty with no memorable shows. During these times I tend to gravitate back towards Western TV.
>>
>>114637552
Not for an extended period of time.

The week after A.Z's first cour ended I was ready for a new episode then when I realised there wasn't another episode... and interalised that there wasn't going to be more for quite a while, I was really really bummed out.

>>
>>114643493

I can understand Japs being shit at writing a logical ending that either ends character arcs with complete resolution or having it a dropped plot line due to death etc. But depression due to incompetency in writing is a new way to express it.
>>
>>114644060

Last I recall butcher didn't write most of A/Z, just an outline with most creative choice, particularly the last few episodes all up to the rest of the writing staff.

I wouldn't have minded Rayet having her head blown off, there's only so far you can go in recklessly damaging the one commodity everyone else needs to survive before they deem you too big a threat or liability to keep around.
>>
>>114645615
I guess unheroic disappointing endings became a thing for japan after world war 2.
>>
>>114645694

I'm a suffering lover. I enjoy the struggle and ups and downs as things go, characters I like getting knocked off in rather simple anticlimactic ways without build up as things just spiral with a hint of hope only to be out done by what ever the enemy is. It's better if said enemy is just as grey as the main cast.

I just like 'it was all for nothing', there is no right answer.

The problem is that the Japs think depressing, bittersweet endings are original and that happy endings are cliche, when the opposite is true at this point.

It's more cliche for an anime to have an ambiguous, unsatisfying, anti-climactic, bittersweet piece of shit ending than a happy one.

Every Japanese writer who writes a happy, conclusive ending should be gifted a national award and access to his own personal harem.

While I like depressing endings, I prefer depressing endings where things flame out horribly, instead of something that's bittersweet. You know, something like:

I like tragic endings where the good guys, trying their best to be good and virtuous, struggling and suffering through the most intense trials and tribulations, fail their own standard and end up causing great evil. For some reason, this ending was actually quite satisfying to me in terms of Kaneki's story. There is a lot more I'd like to know about the universe and how the overall plot resolves, but I'm perfectly content with the way he died.

Kaneki didn't job, Arima didn't job, and it was a good fight.
>>
>>114646600
It wasn't "so bad it's good". It was just unintentionally funny. It's not like it's particularly poorly made. The animation, design, acting, premise, and storyline are fairly intriguing. It's just that you laugh when the author didn't intend you to.

And without any facetiousness, I can say that the MC from Another is one of the best horror fiction protagonists ever.

Ever.

Like, not just in anime. All horror fiction everywhere.

>>
>>114646075

Well, their SoL/Harem shit tend to end that way. Most Shounen series as well from my experience, it's the 'war is bad' kind of mecha series they like to end on that bittersweet note. Which I think is better fitting to 'the good guys lose 2-3 mentors and a BFF along the way, never losing any other main cast member and defeat the big evil, nothing is shown for the suffering of average joe dragged along in this war (or the extreme case is MC/gang has super weapons and average joe is cut out all together).
>>
>>114646677

Shinji accepted that he couldn't hold up and isolate himself anymore. It was what was best for him and everyone else.

On the other hand everyone else died semi satisfied. What the series doesn't do well is resolve the issues of the adults, it touches on them, that they exist but doesn't go anywhere with them since everyone's dead.

Get out of your basement you stupid fucks and embrace the world, you'll get to meet a whole bunch of asshats like Seele, Ritsuko and Gendo.

>>114646913
