VR devices have, at most, 3 competitors right now, and only 2 that are actually marketable right now (Oculus and Google Cardboard). Until the big companies see some results from this new VR gear, they aren't going to throw money into developing a version of their own.

The Morpheus isn't ready for market yet. At least the Occulus is near completion, and Cardboard is meant to be simple to distribute and assemble.
>>
>>113324166
Yes but it's not meant to be a practical VR device, it's a blatant gimmick to get people aware of and interested in VR, and I doubt it's working since nobody's aware of cardboard yet.
>>
>>113322909

Ugh... it'll just work like any screen or other form of video-output. Just develop a game compatible with it and fucking play it. If that won't work, buy Samsung's or Sony's VR-headset...

The problem is when you go outside of that environment. VR requires at least 60FPS and 1080p to run correctly and the PS4 doesn't quite have the muscle to simply just 'do' that yet.

Still, pretty awesome demo, although I'm more surprised they didn't do an actual collab with Im@s itself. Not that Chihaya would be the best thing to illustrate 3D.

You're talking like the Rift is the first ones to do this. Again, Disney has had this since at least 2000, and what's more is that you were connected to other players while you did it. You hear that? Disney had MULTIPLAYER "VR", and they had a small light saber replica that worked like the wii-mote, i.e. it moved in the "VR" the same way as you moved the replica in the real world The Rift is shit compared to it, the only thing it has going to it is it's advertisement. Again, the Rift is NOT new. It's been around for almost 15 years.

Motion we have in real life and video are different. Remember videos are the illusion of movement, many images played quickly. Real life is not that which is why 60fps looks so different then looking at real life. 24 to 30 fps is what is closest to emulating real life, so if anything 60fps is the incorrect setting devs should be using.

Besides all this there are 1080p 60fps shit running on ps4 and xbox.

CGi or not, its still many images played quickly hence fps. Not real movement. Between 60fps and 30fps or less, 30fps emulates real life more.

Why do you think the hobbit which was filmed at 48fps looked weird? It was out or realms with what human movement should look like.

Oculus devs say the fps has a BIG impact on how VR feels. 120fps Minecraft feels a more realistic than 30fps battlefield 4

It looked wierd for being a movie, when I watched it in 48fps it reminded me a lot more of theater. Motion blur reduces the need of higher FPS, but the natural motion blur that of a camera is a lot different than the inferior emulated motion blur.

Have you ever watched 60 fps porn? It feels a lot more real than your run off the mill 24 fps porno.

The Hobbit looked weird because it was overdone with CGi to the point where actual actors weren't even on the screen half the time. 48 fps had nothing to do with it.

You can clearly tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, and 60fps looks leagues smoother. Why do you think youtube is starting to go this route as well and it's finally taking off after all these years, because it's smoother. People only do the 24fps shit, because it's what they latch onto as popular in the movie industry when directors don't want to actually put forth the effort to have a movie run in 60fps.

I gave up because video game children only hear what they want to hear. 60fps does look unnatural which is why soap operas and hobbit didn't look right. We don't have the technology to see real movement outside witnessing it in real life. What we have is the illusion of movement which is how we make whatever, think of a flip book. Several images flashing one after the other. At 60fps, it no longer resembles real life movement.

'4D' is a term that's been used in 3d theaters for ages.It refers to things like the seat in front of you spraying water at you when water splashes on the camera on screen, or a breeze through the theater when there's heavy winds in the movie. Also includes moving seats / theaters.

It's not literal 4D but that anon clearly wasn't referring to the literal.

Have you seen the comparison video between 30 fps and 60 fps with your own eyes? Maybe you should do it.
>>
>>113326372
No, you're not.
You're not making any sense.
frames per second is refresh rate. It's how many frames there are in a second.
Real life has no frames per second because light is constantly being reflected and emitted. They're functionally infinite.

Human eyes might not be able to process it this fast, but that's irrelevant because we're talking about how much the image we're seeing is moving. And it will always be more realistic to use higher frames.
Furthermore anyone who claims they can't see a difference between sub 30fps and around 60 fps is either blind or lying.

Most posters are misusing the term "VR". Virtual reality needs to deal with the various senses such as smell, taste, and physical sensation (pressure, pleasure, pain, hot, cold, and itch). What OR offers is a heightened sense of immersion as opposed to virtual reality.

Pirate movie downloaders will find themselves directed to VR "anti piracy" training lessons which have no logout button.

I recently got to give their newest version a try.

While the resolution has definitely improved, it's still not comparable to a modern monitor. For example if you're playing a flight simulator you can't read the instruments unless you get really close to them. It doesn't look like you're watching through a screen door any more though, so things have definitely improved.

A major problem is however that the effect of depth isn't as strong as some might believe. Depth perception isn't only achieved by looking at things from two different angles, but it's also achieved through the adjustment the eye has to make to view things sharply. In this case there is no such adjustment though, because everything is at the same distance from you - both far distance object as well as things right in front of you. 3D movies often artificially achieve this effect through depth of field filters, but with a game this obviously doesn't work because the player decides what to look at and he doesn't follow a static camera path.

It is however a big step ahead in technology and not nearly as crappy as the virtual boy was.
>>
>>113326805
Plus it's still only in its development mode. I'm sure CV1 will be a huge improvement.
>>

Actually human vision is the majority of our senses. It's why the back of our brain is dedicated to nothing but visual analysis. Ad that to proper 3D audio and you cover more than 50% if not 60% of our senses.

It's probably possible (but maybe very far off) to have a camera look at the eye and tell what distance it's focusing on, and apply a filter to the image in response. I don't think we'll truly be in the waifu age until we can simulate touch, though.

>You're doing it wrong. Providing stimulus for each senses is time, and space, consuming. It's a lot more efficient to just mess with the brain.
Well first we need a way to install the equivalent of a USB port, and also to have the equivalent of external storage. The idea being you leave your organic bits alone and only install things into a separate hard drive that you can easily upgrade or replace. This would be necessary for compatibility, as every brain is different.

idea
>immersive VR dating simulator/VN type of game
>set in a japanese high school
>you can interact with any of your classmates
>most of the guys are just bland cutout characters with repeating dialogue, the girls are where the meat of the game is
>you can stumble upon new girls by walking around the school grounds before, during, or after classes
>if you mess up dialogue options they like you less
>they all have unique traits and personal issues (major and minor)
>if you solve their problems, they like you more and continuing to pursue them opens their routes
>if you're really suave you get to become more than friends early
youcandoanything.jpg

and once you're locked into a route
>visit her house
>have first kiss
>go on cute dates holding hands
>panic about what present to give to her on her birthday, vague clues are given in dialogue
>eventually get to have sex with her, which is sort of the goal of the game, but it could also go even deeper and have true ends be you and her living happily together as a family
it's a really ambitious idea but with the right planning the final product could be great.

Not sure of how to describe it. She just danced to Nekomimi Switch in skimpy clothes while I was ogling her like a pervert. It was almost like being a kid and finding out about hentai for the first time again. You need a bit less stimuli to get off. Just imagine having an MMD model dancing in front of you in real life but everything is pixelated and your field of view is more narrow, and so on.

>>113331051
MESS itself? I haven't really had any problems, just downloaded and ran it. I launch it in extended mode. Making a shortcut and adding -force-d3d11 to it supposedly removes judder when running in direct mode.

>>
>>113332139
Then would you like something more realistic looking like SCOURGE OF THE EVIL?
>>
>>113332157
Not that guy, but got one a few days ago too.

The resolution still sucks (it's roughly the same number as pixels per degree of vision as watching a SNES on an old tv from a normal distance, imagine stacking dozens of those screens to fill your vision). It needs a 4k display, the CV1 is probably going to be 1440p and normalfags will complain.

but the tracking is silky smooth in software that uses all the features of the DK2. You literally cannot notice any delay when turning, looking around, leaning etc and there is zero smearing or motion blur except a tiny bit of smudging on the darkest blacks, which is some kind of issue with the OLED display.

5/10 resolution
10/10 tracking
9/10 latency
needs for more software, less cables
>>
>>113332157
There's pixels, shitty FoV, chromatic aberration, black bleed, iffy tracking, and so on, but those are DK2 issues. The concept itself is actually real, there's tangible depth. Ever held a finger up against your face and looked at something far away? You see two fingers. The same effect occurs here. I couldn't stop smiling like a retard when I first put the headset on. The horizon isn't just a line anymore, it's infinity. Things that are large look large. I almost cried just from looking at the skybox while Gumi was dancing.

I hope we're alive in 10 years because when this technology has been given time to mature, we will experience some shit I tell you. VR _will_ soon take off and it _will_ change the world, the question is when.

Cybernetic Engineer here

At the moment implants like >>113327686 are rejected by the body. Basically what happens is scar tissue builds up around the electrodes and interferes with the signal.

There are ways to suppress this response but they also suppress you immune system so don't expect and elective procedure like this.

What we have found is that the brain responds to em waves as well as emitting them. So rather than directly connecting a wire to your brain it is possible transmit the sensations via wireless transmissions at specific frequencies. Whilst this isn't nearly as effective as direct electrode stimulation at the moment it is much less invasive and bypasses the issues with rejection.

Most research is going in to these kinds of augmentations rather than the full Deus ex kind

It also is an interesting development if your in to /x/ explaining shit
>>
>>113333809
Not exclusively. If I'm remembering correctly, it's a self-induced fragmentation of the psyche that causes you to actively hallucinate someone/something being there. Thats the whole point. When I lucid dream I just go with the flow and change shit subconsciously.

"Full control" just ruins everything. You need to know a middle ground and its usually very minor.

The reason I say "don't bring SAO into this" is the same reason I want to strangle Stephen Hawking. Mr Hawking recently went on the record as saying he's afraid of the possibles that come with AI, and everyone shit their pants. Mr Hawking is a very smart man, but he's a astrophysicist, not a computer scientist. When he talks about it he uses pop culture references like Terminator.

Now I'm an engineer, not a neurologist, so I can't say for certain, and the whole "Over Radiation" Thing seems some what plausible to the point where your higher functions shut down, but your vital functions are incredibly redundant, I think in the worst case scenario such a system may be able to force you into a coma, but I think that's the worst.

Don't talk about it because if there is an unjustified media backlash against it out of fear it makes the developers life a hell of a lot more difficult.

Then they probably weren't lucid dreams. Lucid dreaming isn't just awareness of dreaming, it's having full cognitive control where your prefrontal cortex is awake but the hallucinations in your visual/auditory areas are persisting. Awareness can trigger the latter, but it comes down to brain areas actually being active or not.

You're talking about Artifical General Intelligence, which we're not really working on. AIs that are being developed at the moment are highly specialized and still use the Turing method of calculation. IBM appraently has come out with a new "neural chip" but I've not managed to get my hands on article article so... I don't know about that one.

There is the possibility that these independent AIs could link up and form an AGI network kind of like the Geth from Mass Effect, but it's considered low.

And then there's the logic that a lot of Computer scientists use is a little crazy. Basically there is a cultist kind of notion that if we do make an AGI and it does wipe out the human race then it doesn't really matter.

Metal is eternal.

Physicists can't do metaphysics, son. Leave that to the thinking men of the world.

Reality is fundamentally ideational and as a result there are various definite truths which in essence do indicate that people aren't experiencing things from the sensory or even mental plane, but this doesn't mean we're a VRMMO or that there's any sort of higher consciousness than us. What it does mean is that something is able to observe noumenon, but to credit 'aliums' or 'the men outside the box' with that sort of observational capacity is a bit generous to say the least. Instead, what is definitely sure is that we DO have a total reality, the "Tree Which Peers Into the Spiral of Its Roots", but that Tree is as high up the hierarchy of being that anyone below it might possibly conceive of, at the very least, and I'm inclined to believe that it is indeed the ultimate reality.

You don't need true AIs. Not for what you want them for. Seriously, true AIs are independent and unpredictable, the exact opposite of what you actually want. You want repeatable reliable responses with limited capacity to go off script.

>>113335522
Which? The possibility that we're all NPCs or the notion that AIs might one day exterminate the human race?

If its the former... You're not the center of the universe, Clap clap, well done.

If its the latter, I assure you that the most promising AGI research is coming from the field of full human-AI integration. And even if the do exterminate us, we're going to die anyway, our sun will burn out and entropic decay will make the universe a cold and desolate place. An AGI could live forever.

>>113335807
>Physicists can't do metaphysics, son. Leave that to the thinking men of the world.

I was tempted to stop reading there, philosophers are stuck looking into literature that's at the very best 70 years old and more often 2000 years old, stuck in their ivory towers and unaware that the world is so much more different that it was even 10 years ago.

We're not saying that it's a VRMMO, but it's a very simple analog discussing the possible repercussions of holographic reality. And if you're going to claim the mantle of "Thinking Man" At least read Plato. This isn't metaphysics, this is actual physics and us trying to rectify the discrepancy between Newtonian physics and Quantum physics and the most supported and viable theory at the moment is the holographic principle.

>"The discrepancy..."
The fuck? There's no discrepancy between them. In fact, just quantize classical field theory quantities and quantum theory would sit in comfortably with classical mechanics.
If you meant to say general relativity then the problem is the unrenormalizability of QFT in curved spacetime. QFT is perfectly consistent with only the geometry curved spacetime, but uncancellable divergences arise when gravitational fields and interactions are to be quantized (Parker and Toms 2006).
>"... the most supported and viable theory at the moment is the holographic principle."
This dribble is the consequence of mainstream media trying to strip modern physics down into bite-sized chunks digestible to the general public. The principle is only applicable to blackholes with sufficiently large masses, in which it was shown that the entropy due to Hawking radiation is proportional to its surface gravity. In no way does it (nor can it) be generalized to anywhere else.
Listen here you dweeb. The whole of modern physics isn't "up to interpretation" like how the measurement problem is. If you want to spew garbage then do it at /x/ or something.

that's wrong you fucktard.
Why you dipshits choose to conflate lucid dreaming and dream control I don't understand.
You don't necessarily have control of your dream just because you realize it's a dream, that isn't how it fucking works.
Again the definition of lucid dreaming is STRICTLY awareness of being in a dreamstate while retaining cognitive function.

Conversely, you can be in a dream in which you have complete control over everything and have no lucidity.

It's an issue for those new to lucid dreaming to end up "stuck" in a vivid nightmare they have no control over.
Shit can be incredibly terrifying.

I hate the holographic principle so goddamn much.
Every one and their mother has latched onto this piece of bullshit and goes spouting it around like it's all deep and a metaphor for life and shit.

It it irritates me to no end knowing it was so beautiful in it's original application but at the same time I get tired of explaining to people that we aren't holograms.
It's almost worst than explaining that the universe isn't a simulation and that there are testable consequences of that hypothesis that we simply do not see.

Being a physicist is suffering.

This is pretty true. Until the screens can be replaced with lightfield ones the Oculus should represent the pinnacle of simulated 3d perception. If you add eye tracking into the mix it covers all possible modes of 3d vision excluding focus.
I think that the people that report that the 3d isn't that great are being deceived by the virtual reality component. Where as most of our devices produce fixed in space 3d images which are exaggerated for increased effect. VR attempts to reproduce reality and due to that may appear to be unimpressive by being "too real" if that makes any sense.

Smug bastards, my one weakness.

>Hooft & Susskind, 1992
Put forth mathematical arguments that 3d reality is actually a 2 dimensional projection from the outside rim of the universe.
"When we can see down to a length of one plank length we will see a holographic hum or haze that will support the theory that reality is holographic in nature."
>Craig Hogan, 2009
Using the GEO 600 discovered such a haze

>Aspect, 1982
The instantaneous transmission of data between two particles no matter how far apart they are.

>Gates, 2012
With in string theory equations there are recurring patterns of 4 bit sums, these sums are exactly like those that we use as check sums for data transfer, originally created in the 1940's.

>Bolstrom, 2003
"(1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. "

And then there's Descartes. I'm not arguing that holographic reality is actually true, I'm saying the evidence is compelling and interesting.
