They don't already have to be strong, I just want to means to beat the aliens to already be there. Think of something like Nobunagun. One thing Takashi Miike frequently makes his best films about, are the outsiders in modern Japanese society. The fringe of the culture.

While Arakawa Under the Bridge attempted this for poverty, no Anime (with the possible exemption of Tokyo Godfathers) really has tried to make one about the outsider.

It would be fascinating to have a series about an immigrant working both as a government ensign and the Yakuza. Put them at the edge of both and have the viewer see how both the Yakuza and the government are highly bureaucratic organizations that punish the outsider.

Another series concept would revolve around the Mother and the Daughter. The only anime to really invest in this was Wolf Children and it was a huge success. Lone wolf and cub style stories (but with Mother/Daughter) pairings have been done already (Michiko e Hatchin) but the Mother/Daughter dynamic is not readily explored.

Honestly, I think that I've seen just about everything there is to see in an anime, I've watched many different anime lol. Anime that I've really enjoyed were the "darker" ones, lately I've been watching a lot of lighter anime and by that I mean the colors, which is something that I do love too. I really love the anime Space Dandy and recently No Game No Life, I'm mentioning these because of their art style, I love their art styles! The best sword / spear fighting I have seen so far were Seirei no Moribito, Rurouni Kenshin and Sword of the Stranger. In each of them it was still mediocre at best.

The problem already starts with the usage of katanas. They don't have a proper crossguard to catch/hook the enemy and such, and they're shorter than a European one-handed sword. Japanese sword art is extremely primitive compared to HEMA since the former already failed at the metalurgical part.

Skillful fighting scenes are very costly, the animators usually have no fucking clue about swords or fighting in general and the target audience is too retarded to recognize skill. Therefore I am rather pessimistic and doubt that there will be any good sword fights in anime at least for the next decade.
