What are you reading now, what are your favorites?

I myself just caught up with the Mushoku Tensei and Re:Monster English translations and am enjoying them so far.

Does anyone else have any recommendations (in English) with similar themes, or any with either; reincarnation/dimension travel/fantasy/time travel which might fit my tastes?

From a similar genre, I've also enjoyed Gate: Thus the JSDF fought there (manga) and tsuyokute new saga (manga).

I like the way these series have implied adult content rather than excessive and unrealistic ecchi, have noticable and realistic character development, and that they don't shy away from things like poverty, betrayal, rape and death.

I'm reading Gate, but the manga only.

I don't like LNs
>>

My Japanese is quite poor. It can take me several hours to read just one chapter. I frequently have to refer to a dictonary, and sometimes even ask in chat-rooms for particularly difficult phrasing. according to some native speakers I met there, some light-novelists use weird/incorrect Japanese which makes it difficult for people my level.

But if you speak Japanese yourself, I don't expect you to know which ones have English translations, so just post any you think I might like. I'll check them myself, and if they don't have a translation project going now I'll add them to my list to read later.
>>
>>111430721
I prefer manga too, but I struggle to find any new ones to read; I read a lot, you see; have had to expand to LNs now too.

By all means, recommend me any Manga or Anime you think Id enjoy and I'll give them a try.

Cool, I heard about Rokka, and tried the Magdala manga before. dropped it for some reason;;;; can't remember why, but since you've reminded me I'll give it another go, and try Rokka too.

I didn't indent to sound condescending or act elitist. The series I listed are all fantasy manga, not what most people would call 'mature' - I was only pointing out what I enjoy about them so that it would be easier to empathize with my tastes.

Picked up the Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon LN since I finally got around to finishing the second season of the anime the other day.

It's not as horrible as my previous experiences with LN, but it still awkward to read. I guess I'll just read whatever the anime covered and then drop it to wait for more seasons.

It... actually became one of my most favourite reads. It stays true to its theme with Yuri being the world's strongest. the author lies to explore the concept of "strongest" and it shows. While it is not perfect I think the author does a good job of describing different approaches to the notion of being "strongest".

It has character development, exposition, characters have interesting backstories and I like this author's writing style. And holy fuck all those plot points in volume 3. I really liked that one, it's got some story going and new ones bein set up -- on speed.

It's more on how the story is laid out, everything is geared on giving you cheap accomplishment feelings. It's fun and satisfying to read through, but you wouldn't say that it was a good solid story. But at the very least, it's a league above the typical harem stories.

But he's not really a Gary Stu, at least maybe until his magic power was referenced to be as strong as Laplace's. This felt more like a given talent rather than due to working his ass off since he was a baby. I'd have like him to still be good but not the best magician, only getting by because he's using modern concepts to better utilize his magic (armor piercing designs for his rock bullet).

He's pretty overpowered, but it's presented in a weirdly realistic way. Like, the things he does make enough sense within the scope of his abilities that you kinda react with "yes, of course" instead of "that's totally bullshit". His hax are rare, not impossible. This distances him somewhat from common Stus these days.

Plus he's a perv, frequently fails at what he's trying to do, and the universe is fucking with him.

Very upset. Well she finds out from a letter Rudy sends her. In which he mentions that he married two girls who he loves and who he won't leave, but if Eris still cares about him, he and his wives are prepared to accept her as the third wife.

It turns around when she reads the second page of the letter. Where Rudy says that he's going to go challenge the Dragon God Orsted so by the time the letter reaches her he might have already died but if he managed to survive he'll write again. Eris gets a manic gleam in her eye and basically rushes to head to Rudy's side since the entire reason she was training was to fight Orsted with Rudy.

Probably more detailed than you wanted. Think that chapter is translated though.

I'm not really understanding the popularity. The pace that they're going it, you would think it's the next SAO or something, but sale is only average at best over at Japan. Despite being top at Narou, it isn't that good commercialization wise.

Lots of people like it over here, so the series must be doing something right, since I also don't depend on translations, I don't really care where the effort is spent.

Nothing feels permanent in Mushoku, the fact he can freaking time travels means even if he fucked up he can alter different continuities. In this aspect, Re: Zero and All You Need Is Kill are way better.
>>
>>111454706
It's probably a lot of people's first exposure to the reincarnation genre, plus it's pretty good. It's also rather fresh compared to a lot of LNs; Rudy gets shit done and dicks multiple girls, something 90% of all LN protagonists can't boast.
Still, it's very wish-fulfillment, and stuff like that gets a lot of flak, so I really don't know. People must really love it.
I did read the first LN myself in one day, and that was the first time in months I read an LN for more than maybe 15 minutes before putting it down.

I feel this is the main point.

But it is also very retarded, like that one time he was emofagging and someone actually he would get better by shagging up a girl, and the girl just went and offered herself. Viola, he cheered up.

I've just read the early volumes and I must say that the first volume is spectacularly comfy (Zenith's side-story most notably), satisfying and fun to read. Maybe it's the lack of proper high fantasy settings right out of an RPG. The summary alone doesn't do this series justice.

But then I read volume 2. There's a large drop in quality; the plot then felt like a playthrough of some sort of princess maker/dating sim hybrid, which is bad. I disliked Eris for being excessively bitchy at first but I expected her to develop into a likable tsundere; instead her dere switch got permanently flipped. Rudeus becomes annoying to watch as seemingly more of the world revolves around him (especially in his birthday party). He stops to feel like a proper reincarnation MC and becomes Gary Stu-ish, although I'll most likely bear it for another volume. The delivery of the world history chronology is a complete chore to read through (not to mention somewhat cringeworthy). The rough translation doesn't help.

Does the story get better, /a/?

>>
>>111455926
Just read until vol 6 and see whether it still interest you or not. There's also this thing called turning point which marks genre shift of the story. For example, the first turning point changed the story from simple daily life to adventures and the second one to school life antics.
>>
>>111455926
>Does the story get better, /a/?
No, even the author admits so later on that he's slipping; however, this is back April or so. The only thing's the 4p action later on, honestly you're better off reading porn if you're gunning for that.

Everyone here will obviously tell you otherwise though.

>>111455068
First, spoiler that shit. Second, not really. There are two things wrong with your theory. First of all, the current Rudeus doesn't know how to time travel and it presumably takes decades of research for future Rudy to learn. That means if he dies, there's no reset. Hell, even if he doesn't die, there's no guarantee current Rudy will figure out how to reset. Lastly, Hitogami now knows that Rudy can time travel, and can thus kill him to prevent that if necessary.

Secondly, it seems like the time travel is of the multiple-worlds type of time travel. So, even if Rudy goes back into the past, "he" as in the person traveling, will still experience all the hardships and die (due to insufficient mana). Saying he can just "reset" is like saying you can reincarnate if somebody killed you and then created a clone with your exact memories; the "originial you" is still dead.
>>
>>111455571
>But it is also very retarded, like that one time he was emofagging and someone actually he would get better by shagging up a girl, and the girl just went and offered herself. Viola, he cheered up.

The only reason why he "stood up" was because it was Sylphy and a lot of very expensive aphrodisiac. He went through a shit-ton of attempts with other girls before this happened so it wasn't just any random girl.
>>
>>111456806
I'd imagine if Rudy time traveled a few times he would bring a bunch of diaries with him.

Also I don't think he can kill him directly because of his strong fate, but he probably can manipulate shit so that he wouldn't be able to learn it during his lifetime.
>>
>>111455068

I Believe I read that either when he time travelled his body got destroyed because of it. OR he time travelled after he got his shit rekt by hitogami and time travelled in a desperation move to warn his past self
>>
>>111457521
You need to use spoiler tags. It was the time travel itself that killed him. He never figured out how to even reach Hitogami in his dimension thing.
>>
>Pick Up Arifureta

>Changes his motto to: "If they get in my way, kill them. Fuck everything else."

>>
>>111457759
It actually was. By the time they meet again, Yue, Shia, and don't forget Myuu had mellowed Hajime out quite a bit compared to what he was like in Orcus before meeting Yue. The only person that really caused issues was Kouki because he's a dipshit that couldn't accept that Kaori likes Hajime.

Seriously, playing minesweeper with new titles are already bad enough; now, with the Narou invasion, of which you KNOW 95% are mines, there are literally no point reading any of new titles until 3 volumes later and wait for reviews.

Few years ago any title with ? in it is probably shit, now any version of ??? raises the same alert too. I wish the LN market isn't so easily retarded that literal clones will spawn from success of few single ones.

Yeah Kaito and Vanant didn't want to deal with volume 9 or something cause of the machine translator people who weren't any good at it.
So the other translator picked it up... and said he also would do any chapters the other two didn't want to do, just so they could keep their speedy release pace up. Expect large gaps for a while. I know on the AS forum they were maybe talking about linking privately the chapters that were done by Vanant or something that are being handled by those terrible google translators. I know BT tries to cater to the newbie translator. But there should be someone stepping in and limiting new people with no skill and only editing GT documents to 1 chapter at a time.

>>111473188
You are correct, DanMachi doesn't get good until volume 3. First two volumes are at best average, which is why GA published the first 3 in relatively quick succession for the three complete the first arc.

The beauty of DanMachi lies with the fights, it appeals to general public (normalfags or ??? if you will) because it's hotblooded like Ippo and One Piece. There's nothing pretentious about his character, no hidden power nor potential badass. Every time he gets a boost he faces mobs that pummel him pretty hard. Volume 3 and 5 are the high points; both ended with him losing conscious at the end due to over-exerting himself. Reading the fights are pretty invigorating and hotblooded.

If you are looking for ????? light novel, you should pass this title and never look back.

>>
>>111482079
Danmachi is still pretty much ????? though. It's not as obvious as the others, but he still goes through many feats that are thought as impossible for a young adventurer like him. It doesn't help that the novel itself stresses this at many points, like how most people cant break past lvl 1 or 2, even rarer in a span of like a few months.

To which this one little boy did all because of a crush awoken some super special skill that allows him to speed past almost everybody else, and continues to be able to challenge himself in things his similar peers can't imagine to accomplish.

I forgot to type typical, and yes I do realize it's on the Oretuee wiki. The feats don't lie with his youth, but rather his speed. He started at 14, the youngest we know started at 7.

This is the reason why everyone's waiting on volume 6. If he levels then I'm pretty sure 2ch and a lot of the readers are not going to be happy about it. Right now, everyone suspects his skill just gives him 10x xp gain rate (simplified for discussion purposes), so it should take him longer time to reach Level 3 still. Also, even if Skills are unlimited unlike Magic, the potential to discover them are quite limited.

If you "sacrificed" a slot for faster xp, you could've lost that same slot to say "magic nullification", which the Tamer in Oratoria might have this as far as speculation goes. Omori does not reveal any high tier/rare Skills except for the one Asfi has right now. It's kinda lame but I guess he needs it to prevent Bell from getting too strong compare to the other big 4.

It's not even a 10x growth. If someone needs to kill a tough monster to even get like 50 pts in stats, all he has to do is grind on a suitable floor a few hours or a day. Which he pretty much does throughout the series.

What he does in a week makes him grow far more than average adventurers in a year. That's not even just fast compared to others, its already beyond that. Combined with a weapon that GROWS WITH THE MASTER I don't know what else to say.

Sure there are monsters that are always stronger no matter what, it's not like he's some kind of invincible machine. But chances are he's always going to be part of the few that can actually can challenge these monsters, and he'll be in a party with stronger, respectable people of other families simply because he grows so fast.

This kind of shit gets boring. Like REALLY fast. Almost as fast as this shota's growth rate.

Ais took a year to get to Level 1, he took around 6 weeks. This is what the 10x speed is based on. The knife's already neutered cause it's useless for Monster Rex fight. Also, PVP > PVE.

But hey, I'm not here to convinced you it's a genre-defining novel; in fact, I rather people don't read it. I enjoy the small readership and as long as it does well in Japan, I don't even care if /a/ never mentions this. I even said it was boring until the actual fights. I mean you already dropped the novel, so I don't know why you are just repeating what I said.

Anon, the only thing you backed up is your opinion base on your limited knowledge of the series.

While it's okay to situated your argument on the few chapters you read base on translation, the fact it's selling nearly 40k on its newest volume among the sea of Narou publications is a testament of the writer's skill, especially given the mundane plot as you presented. If the title is so worthless and "one of those power fantasy shit tier", it will still be nearing 10k sales only.

If you truly read the raw and beyond the initial setup, you would not be writing such silly retort and taunting it as proof to anything. Feel free to write more though, I'm sure you've gathered a crowd with your thoroughly convincing dissertations.

Brute force a year (literally looking up every other word), without picking up a dictionary around 3 (understanding 65% of all the details, but 95% of the main plot points, which is enough to hold a decent discussion). Speed will increase greatly if you actually go to a vigorous class. Reading is very easy compare to writing and speaking fluently (recognition versus recall).

Think of it this way, let's say you're a super old-fag that's around 27 years old. 3 years later you become a wizard; by then you're self-sufficient and won't ever have to rely on the whim of Baka-Tsuki's idiocy/mediocrity. Assuming you live until 60 (very low standard for any developed country), that's still half your life afterward. It's a good investment to learn the language of the world's 3rd ranked GDP country because of internet sources, not just for reading LNs.

reading arifureta now. just got through first volume.
Arifureta and Re: monster shares the same template in which the hero eats stuff and absorbs their powers.

it's also pretty gary stu in terms of sudden power up, but then again, all light novels have sudden huge power ups within the first 1-2 volumes.

what I'm not digging is how mundanely it reads. there's not really anything engaging or refreshing about the story. Re:Monster was the same too. Still, I'm going to read 2-3 volumes of this to see if it gets better.

I've run out of stuff to read/am waiting for other LN's to release translations, so I've got nothing better to read right now anyways..

It gets better, the (just finished) current arc is the best by far.

But I don't think these type of stories are for you, Re:Monster and Arifureta are both ????? type.
The MC is supposed to be strongest character in the story. That's the point of the story and it's what the readers in narou want and expected.

>The MC is supposed to be strongest character in the story
I think that's fine. I've read plenty of stories where MC was strongest character. In fact, isn't that like 90% of manga/anime/light novels? My main dislike with the novel is how the character attains their "powers." It's just really boring and coincidental.

For comparison, the normal humans of this world had stat limits of 100-200. If they had a class then it could be 300-400. The Devils and Demi-humans, depending on the tribe traits, could range from 300-600 as their limit. If a Hero was cheat, then Hajime was more or less a monster. >>
>>111495800

Holy shit! This is the equivalent of having a GM all in Ultima Online.
>>
>>111496626

The biggest issue i had with the series is the pacing and power curve. The author spent a lot of time writing the first dungeon or so, then hand waves away the last few.

Too little time spent on the class, too much power inflation for Hajime and everything in general happens too fast.

I think that is why I prefer Mushoku Tensei, better pacing and MC power curve.
>>
>>111496549
They actually aren't all that overpowered considering their enemy is literally God

Hajime has 10k+ stats and Yue and Sia have 6k+ stats, but they still got kicked around quite a bit by Milady
The Rebels themselves created dungeons because they can't defeat God

>>111497216
Considering how overpowered Hajime became in the first dungeon, I'd say it's stranger how he had such a hard time with the others
The other dungeons are so difficult that even the Hero party would probably get wiped out in seconds. How did the Rebels expect to convey the truth to others if they made dungeons so difficult they couldn't be cleared?
>>
>>111497548

The way the rebels set up the dungeons, was weird, especially since almost no human could ever clear them, unless they came with cheat codes.

Since the demons were individually stronger having one of them clear it would make sense.

Not to mention the current war going on made whomever would clear the dungeon just as likely to say fuck what happens and then just go conquer the world/area. They now have cheat abilities.

Pacing and power scale issues hurt it.
>>
Anyone up to date on the translated volumes of Mushoku Tensei? I started volume 6 and want to know if Rudy gets laid anytime soon
>>
>>111495800
>>111496626

The stats don't matter for shit though. Even though he's supposedly stronger, more durable, and faster than anybody else, it doesn't show it at all. For example, he still dodges blows from mooks when theoretically, he can tank it all without a scratch.
>>
>>111498916
which makes it even more anti-climactic. why is he dodging stuff when he can just take hits? it's very inconsistent.
>>
>>111498656
That's the volume he gets laid.
>>
>>111497216
same here. I much prefer mushoku tensei. excellent pacing, interesting characters that are well fleshed out, and even though MC gets super powered in the first volume, he's still very fragile and that fragility is well written in. The best thing is that his overpowered state isn't special to him alone, and that he teaches it to others when able. it's all very refreshing in regards to all these cookie cutter light novels. I'm very glad it's being translated at the speed of chapters each day. I really can't get enough of it.
>>
>>111499137
The best thing is the author doesn't hesitate to kick him in the balls every so often.

Like when his plan on helping the young adventurers backfires.
>>
>>111499192
That's what I like too, MC is definitely OP to a certain degree, and the story itself is certainly wish fulfillment, but Rudy isn't a bullshit gary stu.

He's frequently portrayed as making mistakes or being in the wrong. I especially liked how the author brought up the fact that he just went on an adventure with a cute girl instead of attempting to help everyone else caught up in the disaster, and the only reason he got out of blame was because nobody else knew that he was mentally 40+ years old.
>>
>>111499549
Well he flat out didn't see the notice about the missing people because of hitogami

Mental age wasn't really relevant there, he was completely inexperienced.
>>
>>111499549
I like how its shown where his previous life's reasoning skills give him and edge, and then at other times cause him to jump to completely incorrect assumptions.

It does bother me a little that he's had more then 10 years in the new world and he still seems to feel more like that shitty fatty that he reincarnated from. You would that that after 10 years in a new body that it would start to feel a little vague. Fuck I barely have any vivid memories from 10 years ago.
>>
>>111500274
I like that part too, and also how he's not some incredible genius. Basically middle school to lower high school level stuff. His knowledge is there, but it's also limited so he can't become overpowered/exceedingly rich through other world knowledge alone. It's also nice how he reflects on how regrettable it is that he didn't study more in his prev life, and how that reflection drives him to work diligently.
>>
>>111500897
Shame that he didn't study more science to help with his magic like when he used saint-class water magic for the first time.
>>
>>111496785
so I hit arifureta volume 3 and though it got better in the beginning, it really sputtered around the later half. As concluded, I'll be dropping this series in favor of looking for something else.

been reading the danmachi manga, so I picked up the novel. it's pretty enjoyable so far. pacing isn't bad, like arifureta, and the characters are fleshed out, unlike arifureta. The action scenes are short so far, but that's preferable to arifureta which really dragged on cookbook style.

The class is weaker then Hajime, but they are not useless.

They did manage to get to the 90th floor in orcus, granted I imagine a bit of it was how broken Kaori was as a healer.

If Hajime makes some of the people whom he trusts some proper gear, they might be more useful. He does not have to give them fancy chunny weapons however.
>>
>>111506600
They made it to floor 90 of the normal Orcus Dungeon. That's not the Abyss that Hajime had to deal with.
>>
>>111507601

On a pure stat level, they were handling the monsters just fine, they just had serious issues with the demon girl who had a specific plan to take care of the class leaders. The anti magic monster was the one that really screwed them over.

They had the abilities and stats, just not the experience.

Who knows how much further they could have gotten if they were not road blocked and then shut down by the church.

if you read my comments, I mentioned that I was reading them off Japtem, which is divided into volumes.

each of which were terrible.

also, very nice of you to put that together. it further emphasizes how broken Hajime has become, as I mentioned here >>111496626
and >>111495800. In the span of one arc, he goes from 12 to 12,000, where the limit was supposed to be 1,500.

really makes no sense. His character also makes no sense. Author tries to go for one of those, good guys turned bad, sort of things, but the characters are kept superficial and inconsistent so it ends up being some sort of hot mess.
>>
>>111505106
if anything, it's a misapplication of the word. Synergism is an agent that enhances the effect of another agent, so it's like a buffer type character. the way the MC is, he's like a rip off of full metal alchemist, complete with prosthetic arm and a less tragic backstory.
>>
>>111430287
OP i can understand that, i'm also reading up on Re:Monster and the series is great.
>>
honestly, I would probably have liked arifureta more if it didn't seem like a poor-man's version of so many other series. Basically, there are other series, doing what arifureta is doing, but doing it better - some of those series aren't good either.

alchemy - full metal alchemist
absorb ability + prosthetic arm - re:monster
dungeons and leveling - danmachi
awkward bunny girl + stoic/arrogant MC - Mondaiji-tachi and Izayoi Sakamaki
vampire loli - just throw a dart and some novels
have to beat these things to fight the gods - more dart throwing. I think there was also a recent LN turned anime that had this too

I don't know or care which series came first. all that matters is that arifureta handles all of these poorly, which made it pretty horrible. I found a couple paragraphs enjoyable in each volume, but that was it. a whole volume of nothing for a paragraph that was mediocre in being enjoyable.

whatever floats your boat though.

>>I think that's fine. I've read plenty of stories where MC was strongest character. In fact, isn't that like 90% of manga/anime/light novels? My main dislike with the novel is how the character attains their "powers." It's just really boring and coincidental.
No you don't get it. ????? is like Japanese HFY. Whereas HFY is the result of people being tired of humans being the average nondescript race in sci-fi, ????? is the result of people being tired of the average shonen plot of gradual powerup and MC being the underdog playing second fiddle to the villains. Why can't the MC be the topdog? Why can't he be the strongest from the start?
When I said the MC is supposed to be the strongest I meant it literally. The MC is stronger than even the villains.

I looked at that japtem site and vol1-3 are just the first arc (1-27). Frankly the first arc is not really good, the second (28-50) was a bit better but not by much. Arifureta only started to get really good (and popular) at the third arc and the recently finished fourth arc is the best yet.
>>

>Frankly the first arc is not really good, the second (28-50) was a bit better but not by much. Arifureta only started to get really good (and popular) at the third arc and the recently finished fourth arc is the best yet.
That's really hard to swallow, because realistically when people finish the first arc they would already have a mindset about the series. Asking someone to sit through that long to get to the "good arc" is too much, since that's like the equivalent of volume 7.
>>
>>111514668
>first arc not really good, the second better but not by much. Arifureta only get good third arc and fourth arc is the best yet.

I appreciate the honesty. I won't be repicking up this series though. 1-3 was already enough of a time sink. There are lots more series out there that start out well from the get go. no reason for me to read through a series that is horrible at the start and only average after 6-7 books.

>>111515244
basically this. I would rather explore some english fantasy stories, if I'm at a point where I'm scraping the bottom of the japanese LN barrel.

>>111514668
but that's still like 90% of stories where MC is stronger than the villain. This character still struggled with each floor's bosses and final boss so he wasn't written as strongest, but just written as strongest. It's incredibly inconsistent. He's broken compared to all other characters, but then weak enough to have difficult (long and drawn out battles) with enemies. It's not like One Punch Man. He fights like every other typical MC, dodging stuff and dancing around, having difficulty penetrating an enemies shell or killing off heads. Eventually he gets small fry type mobs, but every MC in stories have that.

it's just a very inconsistent and poorly paced story. no two ways about it.
>>
>>111516037
>so he wasn't written as strongest, but just written as strongest
sorry, sleep typing.
he isn't written by the author as the strongest in battles, but his stats are written as the strongest in the book's universe as far as the reader knows. this leads into how he fights like typical MC's, struggling and dodging and stuff, but then being so much more insanely powerful than everyone else.

it's inconsistent in that regard, I mean.
>>
>>111516037
>but that's still like 90% of stories where MC is stronger than the villain.
You did not read what I posted. Yeah in 90% of the story the MC gets stronger than the villain... eventually that is.

>>111516163
That's because you are at the prologue. The first arc is just the prologue. He isn't the strongest yet back there. It just details how he became the strongest (and pretty badly at that).

>>111515244
Unfortunately that how often it is at narou, the first 20 or so chapters is mostly the author tumbling around trying to figure out what works. If you want another example from narou look at Hachinan (currently #4 on the total rankings), the first few chapters are horrible and it took 30+ chapters for it to find its rail.

Before the third arc Arifureta only has less than 1000 pts. And its pretty criticized for the same things cited already in this thread (protags' personality all over the place, title names him as the strongest but he kept having close fights with monsters, "railgun" and other retarded explanation, etc).
The author took the criticisms and tried to fix it on the third arc and beyond, now it has over 113,000 pts.

>it's just a very inconsistent and poorly paced story. no two ways about it.
Yup, no doubt about that. Hell before the fourth arc the author admitted he doesn't even have an overall plot was just writing down whatever comes to mind.

I just caught up with the TL'd Mushoku, It seems to be moving so fast, I mean, marriage? I honestly think Eris is better but I guess Sylphy is fine too, that whole bit where I found out Fitts was Sylphy actually took me by surprise.
>>
>>111519834
>that whole bit where I found out Fitts was Sylphy

Are you a dense protagonist, perhaps?
>>
>>111519834
Rudeus compared Fitts to Sylphy so many times that it was fairly obvious who it was, especially considering how rare chantless magic is.

I was more surprised by Nanahoshi also coming from Japan

Sure, the story of Mushoku is decent, but there's also some fucked up things. I found it ironic when Rudi compared the Millis religion to Christianity, in regards to monogamous marriage. But of course, polygamy is A-OK where he lives! Slavery is fine too. It really makes me wonder if the Japanese are naturally inclined towards feudalism and (at least for otaku) reject democracy/freedom.

Don't even get me started on Roxy. Everyone likes to say she's the best girl, but I find it reallllly hard to believe an adult would be willingly seduced by someone they once taught as a child. I don't care if they are the same mental age. I suppose the author must've had a crush on one of his teachers or something, and decided that Rudi would be cool enough to succeed where he failed.

As much as I like Mushoku for the interesting parts, it often falls flat and comes off as stale or REALLY old fashioned.

>>111526342
Well... Norn is pretty shitty herself, but you can hardly blame her. She has two genius siblings and that would have to take its toll (see: the reason why Rudi sacrificed his initial life) although Roxy doesn't fare much better.

I mean seriously, Roxy first met Rudi when he was what, 3? And left when he was 5? How the FUCK does that translate to sexual desire? Why in the world would she hold out just because he was gifted at magic at a young age? The entire Roxy/Rudi marriage disgusts me and is blatant wish fulfillment; the author must've liked one of his teachers in the past and decided that Rudi was man enough to seduce her.

In the end I'll rate Norn higher due to her difficult position in life. Norn was not gifted with god-like talent nor was she blessed with convenient power-ups like a Demon Eye or what have you. Growing up in the shadow of Rudeus and Aisha must be hell - and Rudy should know exactly how she feels!

Possibly, the MC will be strongest and one punch everything, but I won't know since I dropped it at Volume 3.

In either case, just as you said, in this story, the MC gets stronger than the villains - eventually. just like 90% of the rest of the stories out there.

I think at one point, I was hoping for some cute boys love type setting. I don't know why, but Rudie reads as a very cute boy.

>a 3 volume
No its not, it's not a light novel, it's not divided in volumes. Stop using Japtem's arbitrary division of the story.

Also you are reading google translated shit, I just checked the first chapter and its full of mistranslations and context errors. They even mistranslated ?? as Saki, no human translator would make a retarded mistake like that.

Dropping it is for the best. Maybe an actual translator would pick it up someday.

So he lost his virginity at 47?

Why is he thinking like a teenager after he finally got his first time? I would have thought he'd be like "wow, got laid. Kay, might as well go on to do some day by day" or some shit and not get an erectile dysfunction.
>>
>>111535284
Because his waifu left him just after the act and he has no idea why.
>>

>>
>>111535121
I suppose it would have eventually came to this. can't defend the novel's poorly written story? blame the translation.

The translation has nothing to do with the setting, the pacing, the character interactions, a characters behavior and thoughts, 3 books worth of power leveling ass pulls. A horrible story is horrible.

also, if you knew google translate, you would know that japtem isn't straight google translated. you should probably look into that and stop nitpicking at inconsequential errors with Japtem.

basically, you're nitpicking that the corn in the shit that is arifureta was not corn, but in fact, carrots. I don't care if its carrots or corn. it's shit all the same.
>>
>>111535284
have you ever lost your virginity at age 47 to a big breasted loli ojousama? if so, you would understand his feelings.

Spend every day with your closest friend who idolizes you. After fucking her she skips town. Have a tendency for self loathing because of awful memories from past life.
>>
>>111535574
but... but... the google translations don't capture the pure awesome essence of the main character as he pulls suzaku spins in the air while pulling at a wire that is tied to the trigger of a 10x max super strong gun that is tied to the MC's hip, that shoots bullets that the MC made himself out of super rock metal and super rock gunpowder and super rock metal jackets that are charged with MC's super electric power and claws and stuff.

a spinning suzaku yanking at a wire to fire hip firing guns and hitting monsters with pinpoint accuracy. pure writing genius.

The better question would have been "why didn't she just write the reason why she left".

Then again, he probably wouldn't have a reason to go to the University.
>>
>>111536113
>"why didn't she just write the reason why she left"
She though he was so fucking brilliant that if she wrote anything at all he would deduce what she was doing and come and stop her. She over values his intelligence and tenacity.
>>
>>111536113
wasn't there a part where she thought about explaining it or something, but then her pride or character decided that the best course of action was to leave bits of her hair and a one sentence letter of goodbye?

it was a conscious effort to not explain because that was what fitted her character best or something like that.

?TUEEEE is just Gary Stue in japan, it's about stories where the protag is the strongest shit, everything focus on him and every girls want his dick.
Basically 99% of the stories in narou but also include stuff like Index and shits
>>
Any LN with a female protagonist?
>>
basically,

eris is the girl who sees you as god incarnate, and will do things without your regard - because you're god incarnate. her weakness is that she cannot comprehend your intentions, but that is resolved by separating from you or hurting you (physically).

sylphie is the girl who understands you and considers what is best for the relationship. her weakness is her self confidence, however, her confidence is strengthened by sexing her.
>>
>>111536427
There's quite a lot.
>>
>>111536535
Roxy is the perfect girl: a god among women. Her only flaw is being too cute.
>>
>>111532878
Just fyi, TUEEE is ?????, which is also just ??. Like that other anon said, it's basically the main selling point of Narou.

Elements including but not exclusive to very little to none character growth while giving the readers sense of superiority through self-inserting into a powerful entity that overwhelms the antagonist disregarding strength nor intellect. Basically, masturbatory fiction, and at the center of this is obviously Mushoku Tensei the top dog of Narou.
>>
>>111537022

>>111537022
Is Dungeon Encounter also part of this genre? Do I actually have shit taste but I haven't realized it yet?
>>
>>111537022

Is there a name for novels where the main character starts like that and everything seems to be masturbatory self insert fiction at first, but quickly things take a 180 and the MC gets schooled and shows the readers he isn`t as hot shit as he thought?
>>
>>111537022
?????? is the perfect word to describe Mahouka.
>>
>>111537022
>at the center of this is obviously Mushoku Tensei the top dog of Narou
mushoku tensei puts all the other masturbatory fiction to shame. the prime element of mushoku is that you don't even realize it's masturbatory. it's very subtle, and reads as a work-diligently-and-learn-from-mistakes and moral-of-the-story type book.

It's like settling down into a bed of silk sheets and enjoying the caress of moth saliva, before suddenly reaching nirvana as you realize that there was a soft hand wrapped around your penis and tickling your balls, within the sheets.

I hope that by top dog you mean the best written masturbatory fiction of Narou. Otherwise you're wrong faggot, have you read the other masturbatory fiction? I would like to add that Mahouka was published on Narou and it's ?? exemplified .

As a DanMachi fan, yes it is part of this genre due to the ridiculous growth part, but read >>111482079 and the subsequent replies (at least until the shit-flinging starts). I'm not a fan of this series.

It's cool that you guys like it and it must be doing something right (the points you mentioned I suppose) to attract such huge following. The series just doesn't resonate with me. I'm probably just among the minority that don't like it, though not as vocal as some other people in this thread.
>>
>>111538922
Oh that's cool, and you have a point. I've only read the first volume but I enjoyed reading the part where he was throwing himself at monsters endlessly out of frustration for his weakness, it really did get my blood pumping.

>This looks interesting. Are the english translation for Vol.1 out? I can only find the prolog to this.

Nope, only the prologue. I'm using the Chinese translations right now. The protagonist seems to be the most (relatively) overpowered protagonist that I have ever seen in a LN besides possibly Mahouka, though.

Mushouku Tensei is pretty badly written though, the first person narration is horribly dry
What he means is that Mushouku by its setting itself is the perfect masturbation device.
A 30 something neet virgin loser, but who is a nice guy! aka ???? like most of the readers, is reincarnated in a fantasy world with all his knowledge and is now fucking powerful and swim in bitches.

Are Durarara and Baccano decent? Are their storylines related?
I've read some chapters of Baka to Test and didn't like it; I'm also reading Mahouka, and it's not very interesting, but at least a bit better than the anime.

He can't even win against Rudy in a pure swordfight
>>
>>111541489

Yeah, I don't get that picture either.

I imagine someone who looks a lot like Rudy or Paul, but without as much a presence. He's as much of a womanizer as Paul, but without the bad boy streak, nor being as reliable or strong willed as Paul. His father is worse.

There is a reason that Sauros wanted Paul to take over the family, or Rudy after he got to know him.
