July 8: https://community.hivewire3d.com/threads/official-announcement-hivewire-3d-to-publish-animals-through-daz-3d.2121
Former DAZ founder Chris Creek approached by DAZ to exclusively sell his animal figures through their store instead of his own. He accepts the offer to financially bolster Hivewire3d.com and even agrees not to mention his own store anywhere on his product page.

Yesterday: https://community.hivewire3d.com/threads/official-announcement-daz-terminates-agreement-to-publish-hivewire-3d-animals.2188
4 weeks later, DAZ decides to terminate their agreement with Chris citing negativity in his announcement as the reason, without specifying what was negative or how they didn't notice it at the time.

While he can't model a woman who doesn't look like a tranny to save his life, Chris sculpted the figures that built DAZ and is arguably one of the current top animal modelers for DAZ Studio/Poser -- which is why they courted him. If they did this to the co-founder of their company, they will do it to you. Do not broker anything through these cunts, they can and will find reasons to renege on their terms if/when they decide you aren't humming their tune.
>>
Isn't DAZ going broke anyways? I've heard they fired a shit ton of people recently.

It's not exactly like they can expand to any serious professional market.
>>
>>574982
We've had people here claim DAZ Studio has a grand total of 3 programmers now so I could believe that. They tried expanding into game assets and Unity curbstomped them pretty quickly (that and Unity finding out DAZ was reselling one of their environments illegally), along with mediocre .fbx export making it impractical.

Comments about the company get routinely deleted from their forums. I could easily see a new investor shitcanning the current management the way they did to their predecessors, burning off the software they won't support any more and within 5 years selling the entire catalog to TurboSquid.
>>
>>574981
They have to be pretty desperate to beg the guy they fired to develop for them again before going tsundere on him.
>>
>>574985
>implying they could transfer PA content that wasn't DAZ Originals
>>
Well, at least they have Genesis 8 Female, living proof that retards will buy the same thing with a new label
> we want the Call of Duty audience
>>
>>574985

Daz has 3 programmers and none of them are their top talent. The decent programmers jumped ship long ago. This is why new features have been almost non existent and the last few updates have mostly been fixing bugs. This is why there's no 64-bit Hexagon. They just don't have any talent left.

As for the forums. I've several times had moderators delete posts I've made critical about the software, lock threads, and even threaten me with lawsuits over posts I've made.

If they weren't a privately held company the investors would have ousted Thornton for being an incompetent boob long ago.

Right now it looks to be a race between Smithmicro and Daz 3D to who will find a buyer to take their software off their hands.
>>
>>574992
>and even threaten me with lawsuits over posts I've made

Let me guess, former employee they pretend signed an NDA but in reality didn't.
>>
>>574992
>If they weren't a privately held company the investors would have ousted Thornton for being an incompetent boob long ago.
If investors were powerless to do stuff like that Dan and Steve and Chris would still be working there, wouldn't they?

>Right now it looks to be a race between Smithmicro and Daz 3D to who will find a buyer to take their software off their hands.
Neither product contains enough patentable IP to avoid a third product reverse engineering either or both and DAZ poisoned the well by making their product free as in beer. The only thing Smith Micro has going for it is the new product manager mentioning hiring a developer team for Poser (right afterward we saw Genesis Vista hurriedly launched).

So, Thornton can't buy a replacement for the dynamic cloth engine whose license expires this year, huh? I don't think VWD's in a position to sell to them without it being ported multiplatform.

>>
>>574992
>threaten me with lawsuits
That's kinda funny almost. Slander, libel or violation of confidential information?
>>
>>574982
The way their business model is setup these days they don't really even "need" a large staff, as most of their income comes from simply posting their vendors products and collecting their (overly high) cuts per sales.

even their "original" characters are mostly made by vendors for them, bought out and their company named slapped on them as "Daz Originals"

as for the OT though, I 100% believe this was all planned from the start by Daz, there has been bad blood between Chris and Daz since he left years back, there's no way it took Daz 30 days to see the announcement Chris posted MORE then 30 days ago.
>>
>>575109

Yes
>>
>>575136
>there has been bad blood between Chris and Daz since he left years back
They completely wasted their time and his for no useful reason and at no damage to his reputation. Maybe they thought making an example of him would keep the rest of the PAs in line. I wouldn't care if they offered me 90% of the retail price if I had to worry about someone's fee fees being hurt. You want company men, pay them benefits or deal with them speaking their minds.
>>
>>575153
might not have hurt his reputation but I'm sure they effected his wallet for a bit..

Due to the agreement, the products Hive took to Daz became "Exclusive" to Daz (they can NOT sell them on their own store) so until Daz removes them from the store. Hive can not put them back into their own store.

You COULD argue that that does not hurt Chris and Co. BUT, if you have products BURIED in Daz's catalog your chances of sales are pretty damn low,

So they get to play the waiting game before they can sell their own products again
>>
>>575153
Also it was a dumb deal to take in the first place, and it really shows how bad Hive's own store must be doing to even be considered in the first place ;)

There are too many reasons to NOT sell via Daz, and only ONE reason to do so.
>>
>>574981
>While he can't model a woman who doesn't look like a tranny to save his life

Dawn looks like Geena Davis in her prime.
>>
>>575155

If Daz has terminated the agreement then their exclusive rights to Hive's figures would be terminated.
>>
>>574994
>So, Thornton can't buy a replacement for the dynamic cloth engine whose license expires this year, huh?

People cracked Optitex's dynamic cloth files and figured out how to make their own dynamic cloth using it and Daz has been threatening to sue users who make their own dynamic cloth using this method claiming it violates the license they signed with Optitex that gave one developer the only rights to make dynamic cloth for Daz.

The thing is the end users never signed any license with Optitex so Daz has no grounds to sue them, so they just delete any thread on their forums where users talk about making their own dynamic cloth.

You can even get a script to convert a conforming outfit to dynamic on Renderosity.
>>
>>574981

that says a lot.
>>
>>575190

Go back to Soho you fucking hipster trash.
>>
The shame of knowing their software is only used for shitty tranny porn would make me pretty bitter too
>>
>>575187
Can you give me a quick rundown on what dynamic cloth actually is? It moves with animations or it deforms with body morphs better?
>>
>>575156
>how bad Hive's own store must be doing

Renderosity permits demonstrative nude renders for characters and textures. HiveWire3D at one point wasn't permitting products to HAVE genital textures never mind demonstrate them in the store and had to back down on that.

>>575187
>and Daz has been threatening to sue users who make their own dynamic cloth using this method claiming it violates the license they signed with Optitex that gave one developer the only rights to make dynamic cloth for Daz

The moment DAZ Studio came out, their announcement mentioned that in return for getting the application for free, they reserved the right to have undocumented formats AND that they would enforce a clause in the recently enacted DMCA to go after anyone who reverse engineered those formats. They offered Smith Micro a license to those formats and the product manager stated publicly that Poser would never use closed formats. That's not being bitter, that's protecting what made Poser interoperable with other products and not too long afterward .daz got deprecated and replaced by JSON-based text formats (or bzipped versions of same).

DAZ at best has the option to attempt to DMCA hosted dynamic cloth content but the clause isn't on par with pirated content and I could even see hosting providers refusing to comply. They jumped so hard at the opportunity to get dynamic cloth that they agreed to incredibly punitive terms for the license instead of investing into purchasing an engine in perpetuity, and the company is really salty about it.
>>
>>575214
Easier to first explain conforming clothing. CC is a figure just like Genesis, with the same body parts in the same locations, except those body parts are rigged to automatically mimic the movements of the figure they're parented to. It's a suit of armor but it doesn't involve any actual physical simulation.

Dynamic cloth is what "real" CGI uses, where there's cloth vertex to figure vertex collision detection and parameters defining fabric type, stretching, folding, etc. It's more computationally expensive and even now can't be done in realtime.
>>
>>575187
>Daz has been threatening to sue users who make their own dynamic cloth using this method

Their counsel is free to send me a C&D but I'll have my representation inform them any out of court settlement won't include a gag order and if they refuse to settle out of court we will recover any and all legal costs.
>>
There's more than enough business to go around in this hobby. Why would you bother being this insecure?
>>
>>575370

Most CEOs are sociopaths. It's a trait that usually helps in business, but sometimes it's a negative when it comes to being petty and vindictive. History is full of examples of executives making stupid decisions that cost them financially but they didn't care because it screwed over someone they hated more.

>>
>>575676
Are there photos of either, I don't even know Thornton's first name.
>>
So in 2011 Daz3D had tops 40 FT employees according to this, which even then indicated they were about to lay people off.
http://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=53801962&itype=CMSID

Thornton's professional background going by his LinkedIn profile is management of higher-end craft tool companies and a haunted house. He has no background in 3D, graphics, sales or marketing and got his MBA from a football college.

Morph3D's current website unambiguously posits the future being in VR/AR and has dual-purposed most of the executive staff at Daz3D into the same roles there. Daz3D is also sponsoring VR/AR events AS Daz3D so you can be sure the money you spend there isn't being invested into the core business.

> November 2014: DAZ sells $1.7M of stock to 7 investors

Why is a privately held, supposedly successful company selling stock at all?

The answer's here:
https://www.linkedin.com/company/daz-productions
> Daz 3D is backed by notable venture firms, including Benchmark Capital, Columbia Capital, Highway 12 Ventures and Multiplier Capital.
From MC's own site:
> Multiplier Capital is a private debt fund that makes secured loans to high-growth, equity-backed companies.

They were still paying off MC as late as 3 years ago. Also, the only members of the Board of Directors who aren't DAZ employees are all from those venture firms (and Israeli investors Gizmoz), making up a plurality of the board.

Smith might be a clusterfuck but it isn't literally being micromanaged by its lenders.
>>
>>575896

Fucking hell. When your BoD is made up of the money lenders then your company is truly fucked. They don't have the talent working there anymore to actually make a decent go at it. They're going to circle the drain and the banks are going to sell off the pieces.

Was Thornton the shithead who made the shitty deal with Optitex?
>>
>>575896

>Daz sells a shit-ton of stock to private investment firms.
>Daz fires all but three of their programmers no longer having the talent needed to make their products viable.

What the fuck did they do with that $5.4M of cash? They certainly haven't put it into product development. Is Thornton just raiding the company for cash? How much has he been getting paid? Jesus Christ! This is insane.
>>
>>575905
>When your BoD is made up of the money lenders
No, the money lenders (Multiplier Capital) have no interest in being on the board. The BoD consist of 12 Ventures (Phil Reed), Columbia Capital (Arun Gupta), and Gizmoz (Elie Wurtman/Michael Eisenberg). Benchmark doesn't appear to have representation there.

>>575908
>What the fuck did they do with that $5.4M of cash?
https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/gizmoz#/entity
https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/gizmoz/investors
I like how this makes it look like DAZ paid for Gizmoz when factually Gizmoz bought out DAZ. Even the news at the time was unambiguous about that.
>>
>>575912
In simpler terms, either the venture firms who invested in DAZ don't feel the company's actually launched by now or otherwise they don't trust each other.

And this is 17 years after DAZ's founding, 8 since Gizmoz. By this point the board should mostly be internal people, not burned investors who need to be able to report back to their firms.
>>
>>574989
Like seriously, how old is Gen3 again? Like not over a year or two right now?

Hell, why did we need new Genesis models anyway? I won't say the original is the best out there, but I always find it fun to fool around with more than I do the later incarnations.
>>
>>575926
>why did we need new Genesis models anyway
The first one had a serious problem. It was too useful and was even backwards compatible to Generation 4 UV maps.

That doesn't sell new products.
>>

I Still think Gen 2 is the worst of them all. At least Gen 3 has some backwards compatibility with the previous versions.

This isn't true at all. Most of these guys have been working in the industry for decades before 3D was an affordable option let alone fast enough to facilitate any kind of replacement for a common wooden mannequin that you can pick up at any arts and crafts store for about 10 bucks. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but you can go to any trade show and watch these guys work and produce the same quality with absolutely zero reference material.
