I'm transitioning to Maya from Blender, and how do I "relax" or "smoothen" an edge election? I want to make this edge loops more rounded as they are slightly too blocky.

Bevel?
You push the button that makes a selection rounder but be careful because it's next to the button that sets your mesh on fire.
Press "3"

this is a perfect summation of my understanding of the Maya UI
Anon, If you look at your UI, you can press numbers 1-4 I believe. This will go into different modes. Wire frame, smooth, quad angle. etc. It's been a little bit since I've messed with Maya 2016 but you can also use the bevel tool as someone suggested earlier.

Pressing 3 is a smoothed preview. if you smooth OPs mesh it isn't going to be rounded because those faces have edges half way along them that aren't adding any curvature will only reinforce a non circular shape.
OP just select those verts along the mid points of those faces that need to be rounded out, then scale uniformly on x/y, which can be done by holding control and scaling on z.
