>Lets you draw edges into the nothing
>Lets you snap to and align edges
>Auto fills holes when an edge loop is completed
>Auto connects edges when dragged on top of each other

Sure it's a shite program, but goddamn it does those things better than any other modeling software.
>>
>>569417
>palm trees with a greyscale alpha being used as a cutout
why google
>>
>>569417
Because SketchUp is a mostly 2D program. The basic primitive is a 3D surface cut by a 2D drawing. It's great but it's not really suitable for 3D porn, that's why it's not so popular.
>>569432
They're proving to you that your modern ultra detailed hyper realistic graphics are kinda useless and don't even look that good anyway.
>>
I still use it for many non complicated hard surfaces like house interiors like kitchens, cupboards, tables actually most furniture then I fine detail any fabric parts of them in MD anyway.
Also for large urban many plugins like create roads/pathways/etc are invaluable.
>>
>>569417
try rhino
>>
>>569417
sketchup is shit,
bloatware out the ass,
worst geometry kernel out there
>>
>>569499
>>569505
If I'm not mistaken SketchUp, Freecad and Rhino all use the same geometry kernel.
https://www.rhino3d.com/opennurbs
>>
>>569505
sketchup is good for architecture and drafting but for rendering, shader etc you are shit out of luck.

i bet that the render plugins for sketchup are more expensive than sketchup
>>
>>569528
No, they aren't. You're commenting on something you're clearly never even tried.
>>
>>569499
Tbh the only good things about Rhino are Grasshopper and the command line.

Still beats sketch up which has nothing good about it
>>
>>569541
What do you honestly believe you can do in those two that you can't do in sketchup that has real use in the architecture industry.

I'm seeing more companies moving to 100% skp because of the 3d detailing you can do with much more ease than Revit and rhino.

Tbh iv never heard anyone say they actually use grasshopper and the website looks like it's from the fucking 90s.
>>
>>569695
>iv never heard anyone say they actually use grasshopper

Seriously?
You think Hadid or BIG do their shit in Sketch up?

GH is incredibly useful for so many things. It's used for paneling, all sorts of analysis and optimization, automation and speeding up repetitive processes.
Hell, I'm currently building a script that can turn any object into a mesh with faces scaled to a desired texel density.

I admit I tried Sketch Up once, about 6 years ago, and was turned off right away, so idk what exactly it can do today.
But there's no way it can even begin to compete with the amazing shit Grasshopper can do.

Rhino is only alive because of GH tho. They really need to come out with Rhino 6 and it better have multithreading.
>>
>>569695
You can't really compare sketchup to revit because they have completely different purposes. sketchup is general modelling program while revit is specifically meant for construction and has BIM capability. Revit is for producing construction drawings and coordinating information.

Also Rhino is really good for model making. Its easy to convert part of a model into lines ready for laser cutting. It also has a bunch of tools which help with checking models are good to 3d print or cnc. There are also things like tolerance setting for those who need them.

>>569702
Rhino 6 should be coming out soon-ish. The guy who develops grasshopper is working on grasshopper 2 atm. He's rewriting everything because apparently its a big mess of spaghetti code from when it used to be explicit history. I think it has some nice new features like a make2D component, as well as being faster.
>>
>>569417
i do decent shit in sketchUp, i know it´s not 3Dmax or C4D but it´s much more capable that what people think it is. it is shit without plugins thogh, but plugins and renderers make it a good tool for fast work.

i started with vray, so when i picked up Thea it was a pretty fast process, i`d say if you really practice everyday and read the manuals, like 2 months, then it`s just perfecting the tools and optimizing the model so you make it easy for the engine. Also talking about tools, it depends what you are using your software for and how capable it for what you are using it. SketchUp is complete shit for animation, characters, organic stuff (it has plugins like artisan and subD but they are attempts at doing something the software is not designed for and make a somewhat decent job) and high detail objects and furniture, it is shit for almost everything now that i think about it lol, but for architectural visualization and design its a fantastic tool, i love it, i have used it everyday for the past 10 years and i dont regret it a bit.

here`s another render of a mall i did like a year ago.
>>
>>569884
how can you render that big of a scene and not have any noise?
does the light bounce once or something?
>>
>>569436
it is used by architects, moreover.
So.. not a big deal.
>>
>>569884
how did you model that mesh surrounding the white building in the center and even the hand rail?
I tried to make one for one of my projects last semester but it kept on crashing so I had to change my design last minute and it came out looking like shit lol
>>
>>570927
not that fagot.
But for the look of it is a flat surface with a material that has alpha channel transparensy.
When you texture the model some render engines have the diffuse as an image and the transparency as an image or a slider (black and white)
>>
>>571506
how does that have to do with what i asked?
>>
>>571507
who's this?
>>571506
ahhh alright seems easier that way, I'll give that a shot
>>
>>569885
It´s calculated with TR2, an unbiased render engine, i does not have noise because i calculated it for enough time, i have a double xeon (32 cores) does a good job at this type of scene, also you have to really screw up your scene to get noise in exterior renders.
>>
>>570927
lol >>571507 is right, it is a plane with an alpha map i created on pixplant, pretty basic material stuff too, just an alpha over a flat white color.

Also it can handle pretty decently volumetrics, displacement and BRDF materials, as shown in this rendering, all inside sketchup and rendered with Thea, i know my software limitations, but as i said before, for architecture its a great and very quick software.

>>
i hate to be the guy, as i'm not a blender "fanatic," but it seems like blender's grease pencil and related features+addons allow a good deal of what you're talking about.

and it has pen stabilization so you can actually draw smooth shapes with pen+tablet, apparently, although i haven't tested it out yet.

but this sound like a mostly architectural thread and i'm sure the grease pencil's features aren't really up to snuff for that(in particular i'm not sure about its alignment features) so i guess i'm out of place after all.
>>

tfw I went to solidworks because i always thought sketchup was shit
>>
>>569541
As an industrial draftsman, the best thing about SketchUp is just how quick it is to work in. And how easy it is for a customer to understand.

The place I work at makes brass pipe fittings, and I talk with the customers team to get their part requirements to work on our macHines efficiently.
So I can just stream them me working in SketchUp and they can see the 3D part they will have made and we can work out changes on the fly. Compared to me drawing it out in 2D in AuroCAD, which is much more technical, or doing a 3D model in something like maya which would take a bit more time and it doesnt look as friendly.

you wouldn't know how to import models autodesk to sketchup would you?

I cant get the textures to work.

pic related all i get is a model and no textures.
>>
>>572783
sure, sometimes it´s a scale or a geometry incompatibility and sometimes the uvmapping or the reference file is missing, that has happened to me but with 3ds files. send me the model to [email protected] to see if i can fix it with deep exploration cad edition, i can try to convert it there. it usually works for me.

no problem, thanks for the textures. Just sent you the textured sketchUp file to your email. I guess the problem may be the format since SketchUp does no read natively .dds files (direct draw surface) it can read tiff, png and jpeg i believe. maybe .bmp but im not sure, i those cases you can do two things, convert your dds to jpeg via Photoshop and re assign the textures in max, or export converting the file with a software like simlab or deep exploration.
i did a little render using the maps as roughness maps on the reflection layer, not sure if it was snow or roughness so i did a region render.

>Lets you draw edges into the nothing (i.e. extruding a point)
>Lets you snap to and align edges (i.e. the snap tool in pretty much any software)
>Auto this
>Auto that
You can do this in blender; pretty much all of the functionality sketchup has is within other softwares if you actually read their documentation or look for the right button. I guess it's like stick vs automatic, but it's there.
>>
>>572984
what route did you go?

>photoshop
>max
>simlab/deep exploration
>>
>>572994
the route was exporting form 3dmax to .3ds,
then in deep exploration i just opened the 3ds and exported to .skp that way you skip the converting to texture part as deep exploration does it automatically. it´s that easy. i wish i had time to make a video for you but im kinda busy today at the office. if you need to convert something else send it to me and i will do it gladly when i have the chance.

one last thing is that i had to re apply the texture paths in deep exploration but i just had to double click the geometry and reassign the texture with the same file name.
>>
>>573001
I'll download deep exploration later tonight and give it a shot, Thanks M8

What plug ins are best/essential for archviz?
I want to maximize my workflow and save time, am a architecture student so I mainly use sketchup
I paid for a revit course but don't really like it, I'm too used to autocad + sketchup
>>
>>573154
I suggest you visit sketchukation

Most of the top plugins there many would think are essential

Here's a few that I use regularly

Cleanup
Round corners
Profile builder
1001 tools
3d shapes, iforgot the exact name, but it's quick 3d primitives to drag and drop in, saves time especially for stuff like cones and spheres
Instant roads nui
Purge/Cleanup

Those are all free except roads nui i think.

That's a few I use almost daily, I suggest you look up the authors ThomThom and TiG too. Both of then have created and still create many of the msot cutting edge plugins.

If you want to do more mdoelling than just architecture then Subd tools, wrapR, sketchUV, artisan are all good but not all are free.

>>
>>573282
ok, ill bite Mr. retarded troll, i have a lot of work to spend time doing some speakers for you, but two spheres is really not much of a callenge anyway. But the worst thing you typed is that architecture is a variation of cardboard boxes which means two things, either you are absolutely ignorant about the depth of architecture as an art, or you just want to draw attention to your utterly stupid rant about something you know nothing about.

you are very close, just double click the surface and map it with the same name the mesh has, you can see the names on the left of the image you uploaded which will also show when you double click the surface.
in order it should be:
1-double click the surface
2-double click the texture name
3-go to the diffuse slot in selected mesh/texture and assign proper file.
4- export on the save as menu as .skp
5- fuck bitches.
