Admit it.... it looks pretty good.

Base specs: 8 core Xeon (18 core option available), 32gb (will take 128gb) 1tb SSD (4gb option available) and a 27" 5k display. GPU will be AMD Vega, but no further details about base model available yet, but a 16gb option will be available.

$5000
>>
>>567256
You could make that for 3000~
>>
>>567257

Yup, you can easily beat that price with a self-build..... right up until you try to add the 5k display.
Granted... a 5k display is really not necessary, so, you could argue that it is still 'overpriced' because you're dropping a big chunk of your money on a luxury that you don't really need...

BUT...

If you have decided you definitely want a really, really nice UHD display with your next PC - you actually can't beat this price. You'd actually be paying *more* money to go through the hassle of building a machine yourself, which can only run Windows, makes 10 times more noise, loses it's resale value instantly, and doesn't look half as good.

But yeah - that's only if you're really set on having a very nice display. (And the display on this thing is really, really nice).

If not... yep; self-build. Save a couple grand.
>>
The more I think about it... the more it's clear that if you're dead set on having a high-end display for your next computer, you'd actually be an idiot to overlook this machine.
You can cry all you like about 'Macfags' and hipsters and blah blah blah... at the end of the day, this is a powerful PC which runs Windows and MacOS* at a price that, given the cost of that display, isn't half bad.

*btw - once you've installed Windows, you can actually erase the MacOS partition entirely if you're that anti-Mac.
>>
Has thermal throttling in AIOs been solved?
Because I wouldn't buy a workstation that shits itself under strain, regardless of what kind of value proposition it is. And why would you spend good money on a really nice screen and have it forever fused to the box driving it? Can you even swivel that thing?

If I were a macfag with too much money I would just wait for the next mac pro, since it sounds like Apple realizes how stupid the trashcan was.
>>

A valid concern. Apple claims to have fixed it (but they would, wouldn't they?). That said - I don't think you sell an 18 core machine up for sale without having thought about how to cool it.

Gonna have to wait for the reviews on that one....
>>
>>567263

>>>trashcan

I worked at a place that had a couple of those for a while. Say what you want about them - but the cooling was flawless. They were silent all the time, and just put out a little breeze of warm air when rendering. It was kind of incredible really.

But yeah....forcing the customer to buy 2 unchangeable AMD gpus as standard? Fuck off.

>Admit it.... it looks pretty good.

Why should I care about what the packaging of the machine looks like?
I'm serious.
To me all that matters is how much computing power you get for your buck and also having a reliable, quickly maintainable machine.
>>
>>567267
I didn't mean 'look' in that sense you fucking goblin.
>>
>>567267
>Why should I care about what the packaging of the machine looks like?
because you dont have to pick and install parts, install an os, or do maintenance other than bringing it to an apple store if it breaks

its literally the perfect machine
>>
>>567269

As well as the fact that it's near silent, very power efficient, and neat and tidy.

But hey... if having a machine that looks like a prop from Battlestar Galactica, all covered in glowing blue lights and shit with cables running all over - that's cool too.

MacAndWindowsFag here. I've always had an iMac alongside a Windows box since 2002.

I get why money-conscious nerds have a hate boner for Apple, and that's unfortunate because it means they overlook the iMac.
The iMac has been and continues to be the one and only value-for-money product that Apple sells.

Literally every other product they have ever made is ridiculously, insanely overpriced.
The fucking iPhone is $700 or something?
Their 'Workstation' computers that are made of 5 yr old components that go for $3000?
Their 'notebooks' that have mobile-class processors which they sell for $1500?
GET TO FUCK.

But the iMac is this one weird outlier on the Apple landscape; it's good, versatile, and priced fairly.
Please no-one alert Apple to this because I've always assumed it must be some kind of mistake.

This new one looks really good. There's never been a bad iMac. If you're so full of geek-rage and Pepe memes because the cool kids wouldn't talk to you at school to the point that you can't be objective about that, I feel sorry for you...

...Nah just kidding! No one gives a fuck about you!
>>
Looks good but I don't have 5k to spend on a screen with garbage components. Been thinking on building another PC since the one I have is 4 years old and the small form factor is unupgradeable, I'm still debating whether to go Xeon or not, there are used ones being sold for extremely cheap, but I also play games. Apple still going for AMD is also a con since most applications work better with cuda and Open GL is slow as shit.
>>
>>567291
What are these junk components of which you speak?
>>
Why would anybody would want a 27'' 5k display instead of
A) dual monitor setup with 4k and 32''
B) a super-wide 34''+ monitor or two
>>
>>567293
1 32" is too big to sit in front of, let alone 2.
But if you want to add a 32" display to your iMac pro, you can. You can add two, in fact.
>>
>>567294
Bullshit, i am sitting in front of a 32'' and a 27'' monitor and it/they are not too big. But i do have a big table and they are far enough away (~1m) .

Why would anybody want super high resolution on a smaller space rather than more space and resolution.
>>
>>567296
This 32" 'display' you're using... it's a tv, isn't it?
>>
>>567297
Well, after looking it up i realized it only has 31.5''.
I don't own a TV and i don't watch tv.
>>
>>567292
I'm guessing all of them. Looking at the site and there are no proper tech specs so I'll asume for the $5k model they're going to use a 3+ year old sub-$500 Xeon, the "4.5GHz turboboost" and "up to 42MB cache" is worded as if only the 18 core model has that. A couple of 16GB DDR4-2666 RAM with ECC cost no more than $500. A $700 GPU. $400 for the 1TB SSD. Add another $1k for the 5k display. $300 for the keyboard, mouse, built in cam and speakers. With some luck I could build a similar PC for less than $3k.
>>
>>567256
This does indeed look nice in and of itself, but keep in mind that this is just a stop gap while Apple works on the next Mac Pro. And even though they moved the RAM to make room for more beefy cooling, it's still quite a stretch to jam this much hardware into such a small chassis, I mean it's supposed to have a 500W PSU in there...

5K display aside, I would really consider building an X399-based system instead. It would have been nice if Apple had planned for TR inside of this system in the first place, but as a filthy Max user I'd rather just get a Wangblows box and make use of all that expansion you get on the motherboard, and of course toss the biggest cooler Noctua make on the CPU for smooth 24/7 performance.

Apple seem to be pushing the gaming angle slightly harder these days, which is curious.
If you go to the site you'll see a load of shots of this new machine running Unreal, where in the past it would just be showing Final Cut or After Effects or something...
>>
>>567325
Final Cut is dead and Adobe products use Cuda for faster GPU processing. The Mac Pro was probably a flop since even the most die hard Appledrones knew it was overpriced, even for Apple.
>>
>>567325
Not gaming so much as VR/AR, which while largely initiated in popularity by gaming, does have many applications outside of that.
The number of native OSX games is still pretty terrible, and running Boot Camp, a VM or wine wrapper are just not that great options, even if you have disposable resources.

>Say what you want about them - but the cooling was flawless.

Lolwut. The cooling was garbage. Try rendering with CPU + GPU and it would throttle to hell. That cooling was designed to do one or the other. But not both at the same time. Apple products tend to throttle pretty frequently in general actually. Muh thinness is more important than muh productivity to these professional idiots. Buying an AIO, you are guaranteed to have weak ass cooling cause its built like a laptop you cant take anywhere.
>>
>>567256
It's gorgeous, but I'd much rather have a standalone tower for a new Mac Pro. We've waited this long and they've watered it down, removing pretty much any aftermarket customisability, which is a real shame.

Still, I'd buy one if I could afford it. Which I can't, so I might buy an external GPU for my MacBook Pro eventually.

It's a gorgeous device nonetheless but it's somewhat pricey, given that Apple sells their stuff at a premium. Arguably worth it, but still very pricey.
>>
>>567332
>Final Cut is dead
I prefer Avid, but Final Cut Pro X is perfectly fine despite people whining about it regularly.
>The Mac Pro was probably a flop since even the most die hard Appledrones knew it was overpriced
No, it's a niche product that sold about as well as it should have (though to be fair, the trashcan redesign upset a lot of people who prefer the more customisable and generally bigger and better aluminium case design that they had previously used). I'm just upset there's no new 17" MBP to go with the new iMac Pro.

No Photoshop and no Zbrush is a hard sell for an independent artist. Maybe if I were in a tight corporate pipeline and literally never left Maya.
>>
>>568049
Not only Maya, there is Modo, Houdini, Blender, Mari, Substance P&D, Katana, Clarisse, Nuke, Fusion, Flame, Resolve and some more VFX tools.

That is a complete pipeline with everything except sculpting and 2d image manipulation.
There are several professions/ categories of 3d artists who don't use sculpting, saying that its a hard sell is highly subjective.

But that kind of thinking is not my problem, i think best option is always to have more than one option, meaning both a Windows system and a Linux workstation.
