Techniques to get softly lit surfaces like that is related to normal and view vector calculations.
Look into valves popular 'half-lambert' or any 'falloff' type shaders to get ideas of how to get shading like that.
Various combinations of Perpendicular/parallel and towards/away type falloff as self illumination is what you want.

These are all dirt cheap effects to render and it's surprising how underused and relatively obscure they are.
