Is it viable to try to make a living with indie animation? We've been talking about hentai + patreon, making a living with games, but what about 3D animations? someone has a experience to share? is that possible?

I've been learning 3D since 2015, its not much, but i want to aim a goal to my life...
>>
dont know what you exactly mean with indie.
but of course you can make a living of it. animating is one of the biggest parts in a production pipeline. when it comes to small studios if this is what you mean with indie its a bit more complicated since the teams are smaller and everyone is expected to be kind of a generalist and creative in general.
depends on the pipeline tho.

Yeah i mean, we seen a lot of those news about small group of people making tons of money with their game, so i was wondering if thats a reality with 3d animations aswell.

Because all i've seen about 3D animation, is movies made by big companies, big fellas, but never by 2 or 4 guys. We see this in games, but in animation? Thats what i want to know more about. More stories, people and what they achieved..

you can make decent living with smut
actually the highest earners in the entire industry are making smut

Animators are prime picking cuz folks hate rigging and scripting rigging. Upcharge everyone and buy yourself a Porsche.
>>
Does anyone knows someone that made money with short animated movies? Porn seens bad to work with "Hey what you do for life?" "Oh im an animator" "Really? Youre doing movies? What youre working right now?" "Eh..... im fucking Tess from the last of us with Joey in front of Ellie..."
>>

This makes absolutely zero sense.

Seems like you don't know how anything actually works.

>Animators are prime picking cuz folks hate rigging and scripting rigging

Animators aren't character TDs. Animators don't script or rig.
ergo, that sentence makes no sense.
>>
>>563203
See you are misinformed because TD's usually help clean up with all of the stages of the animation. That's why they get paid more because they must work in sync with the art director/director. You can animate and still hold a TD's position because, in essence, you are testing and creating tools for said animation, you just have more on your plate.
>>
>>563203
Everyone above junior usually has more than one job anyway and there is a lot of cleanup to make things look as pristine as possible. TD's have to know to rig to even get the tool to work right. Checks and balances up and down the pipeline to make sure the guy before you didn't fuck up.
>>
>>563117
Be a generalist so you can make more money, more work more money.

>>563205
Sure, TDs might be able to animate; that doesn't mean all animators are TDs.

>Animators are prime picking cuz folks hate rigging and scripting rigging

This doesn't says "TDs are prime picking..."

We're talking about ANIMATORS. If an animator can rig and script well then they're overqualified for an animator position, and they likely wouldn't be listing their job as Animator.
If a studio is hiring for animator positions, then they aren't lacking in choice because there are far more animators than there aareTDs, i.e animators don't get prime picking; TDs do.
>>
>>563347
this. Animators are literally shit tier. One animator was telling me how he "rose" to be lead animator on an oscar winning movie - the director gathered all the animators in one room and just closed his eyes, spun around, and picked two at random.
>>
>>563347
that guy's just trying to cover his ass because he got called out.
animators are sometimes also TDs, because it's a smart decision to know how to rig/do anything else if you're an animator, but that doesn't mean all animators are TDs, or all TDs are animators.

>>563348
film animators are glorified mocap cleanup monkeys anyway. 90% of their job is done for them as soon as filming is done unless you work at pixar or some shit.

probably pays decently, but i'm assuming it's going to be replaced by automation in the near future.
people are already feeding raw mocap data into neural networks and getting pretty good looking results.
