Pros and studios will use a multitude of programs to get the project done. Most of the big companies use the paid programs because of support. If you can master multiple softwares, your probably going to be in more demand for work.

I actually started with Cinema 4D; learned modeling basics and then some, and then jumped over to Blender because of Cinema's poor rigging/UVs.

Cinema has a great feel, but Blender is faster and incredibly intuitive once you get used to it.

This is actually something I'm currently working on using Sketchup 2008 and Vray, on an ancient toaster. This image took about 30 minutes render time.

What actually pushed me away from Cinema was Cactus Dan dying. I don't know if you know who that is, but he made fantastic plugins that brought Maya/Blender style rigging to Cinema.
