Not only does it look terrible, but they're distributing these high res renders for fan artists to reference as PDFs.

For some reason trying to load one of the PDFs fucks my ability to resolve host names.

Uncanny valley, the closer we get to photo realism the harder for us is to accept it as we focus more on tiny details
the lack of real realtime shadows jumps out to you even more here, as instead normal shading is used to fake it all

Most modern game suffer from this, so close but still not there

Also its good they got rid of the exaggerated albedo fake shading on peebee, was really killing the model in initial reveal
Ether go pbr or not, dont fucking mix both as it stands out even more

Whoever lit and rendered this did a poor job so there arent enough shadows on her eyeball. The model is fine.
Pic related, I just removed some of the sharp highlights in her right eyeball and shadows to bot. Looks less buggy

dynamic lighting doesn't bounce enough to recreate the shadow under the eyelid, you use a separate piece of geometry with an occlusion texture

I still think the issue has to do with the eyeballs being too bright though.
I'm going to guess that EA wanted to post the model without any extras and since the model is built for the game, it doesnt work well in still images.

I think it has to do with the fakenes of the characters same as the SJW being fake to themselves or something, SJW probably not the best example but I get it and it is real.
Photogrammetry models or photo realistic models they are good but not the stuff thats coming from the gaming industry trying to make photorealistic shit themselves but they will never get the real feel to it.

What personality does the original have? Technically it's garbage, just look at the eyes and hair. There's no value there. The altered one at least kinda corrects the shading of the eyes and gives sheen to the hair instead of leaving it looking flat as charcoal. So what exactly is the personality? The technical fuck ups that clash with the rest of the realistic shading? Why don't you describe the personality in clear words so we can all understand it.

Best get a mirror and start practicing.

When you buy the game, look into who consulted and follow the connections between the animation staff. It will give you an insight.

Also, if you have what might be now consdered a conventionally "attractive" face, try practicing wearing a mask a little more each day.

My theory is that they were going to keep AO seperately from the diffuse texture but midway through production they realised they didn't have the memory budget to do it on xbox or something like that so they just removed all the AO and didn't bother baking it to the diffuse map. Now they are left with decent models and sculpts that just look kinda flat and are poorly lit.
The design is pretty shitty, no excuse for that.

But I kind of like the more realistic proportions. The head sizes seem weird, but they would look like real people if the modeling job was good.

It's also interesting that Ryder reminds me of a real girl I knew, which hasn't happened with other games so far.

But these are the only good things I can say about it.

EA regularly fires its games development teams near game completion (usually during the final Q&A stage) and hires new ones to finish so they don't need to worry about bonuses or long-term employees who expect promotions into higher paying positions.

Google the names you see on the credits of their games and you'll see a pattern. For every role you see, there will be twice as many people as expected and their Linkedin pages will always be the same

Name 1: Artist at [EA Studio] 2013-2016 (6 months before game launch)
Name 2: Artist at [EA Studio] 2016-Present (hired right when Name 1 was fired)

End result is a revolving door of game creators who are hired with no quality control and never get to truly adapt to working as a cohesive team before they're all fired and replaced.

You can't really blame EA corporate. It's been documented that it's internal within the studios themselves. The leads and senior guys get rid of the up-and-comers so they can maintain cushy positions and save budgets.

No matter what industry you go to the suits are more worried about things like redundancy, cutting budgets to entire departments, and programs. They aren't nearly meticulous enough to be picking and cutting what amounts to handfuls of jr and mid-level guys. That stuff usually comes from within departments and teams
