Has someone here made it to the top? Hired by a company like Blizzard, or ILM, or EA, i dont know.?

Or are we just a bunch of 3D porn faggots without a job living with parents and masturbatig? Because thats me

Among the thousands of 3d artists that would be a very slim chance, and since this is 4chan I don't think people hang out here coz they're absolute winners.
>>
>>540590
people kinda have very very strange view about 4chan,
it's one of the biggest boards on the planet and believe it or not one of the most influential ans internet goes...

you just don't get how much people actually visit 4chan, ad somehow see slightly "successful" people as you are some kind of gods,

Not actually at one of the three OP mentioned, but somewhat similar company, working on AAA and popular shit.

I visit /3/ because some days I just have no life and it makes me kek to see all the shit-tier stuff people do on blender. I also give comments and feedbacks when it's worth it.. a few people do have potential here and they deserve encouragement.
>>
i know about 2 people that are AAA tier from /3/

since its a small community, no surprise.
might give an honorable mention to another 3 people that might achieve AAA in the future if they keep working at their current pace
>>
i know a guy who got a hiring offer from blizzard but turned it down. he is my role model what comes to 3d, i've worked with him for like a year or so and thats when i learned most of the stuff about 3d from him. he truly is an awesome guy.
i can tell his routine:
5 am to 7:30 work at home on personal projects
8 am to 5pm work at office
6pm to 22pm work at home on personal projects
>>
>>540679
Does he work on unrelated stuff at the office? I would love to hear more details about his lifestyle as it is something Im trying to archieve... talking about rutine and discipline. Thanks
>>

I doubt you'd reveal who you're working for,
But what company would you say is on par with yours to?
>>
>>540583
I work at one of the equivalents in the cg/vfx ads industry, so the quality isn't on par with ilm etc of course but it's a steady job and the work is respectable.

I go to 4chan just because I've been going to 4chan for a long time, that didn't change when I became pro. also, it's a bit boring to browse places like polycount or 10k where everybody just praises each other endlessly.

>>540590
it's not like just cause you have a good job you're a god. people still have lives and 4chan is a relatively popular website. it stands to reason that some people working your dream jobs may visit 4chan.
>>
>>540583
Yes but not those. I work for the company that does the vfx on Game of Thrones as a first job. I worked on Fantastic Beasts as a first movie.
How?
Just happened to go to school with the right skills at the right place and the right time, and made a bunch of contact there. I also worked for a company that makes animation conferences around the world, which made me know a lot of animation artists already who gave me tips and stuff.

Don't be scared of going out and make yourself known OP, I believe in you. You can do it.

Been to ILM, or at least one of the offshoots since they've expanded everywhere. I browsed /3/ occasionally back in school, however it was mostly crappy student/hobbyist posts so not really worth browsing. I now mostly just check /v/ everynow and then when a new game comes out to see what the hive mind thinks of it.

it`s all about investing time into what you want to do and become, while being someone that others enjoy being around. arguing on the internet won't get you at pixar, but polishing your work 12h a day will. find something you enjoy doing and go for it.

Go to the websites of the companies you want to work for and read their "career" pages. Many of the top companies are always looking for new talent, and offer internships to get you in on the ground floor. You can even go with start-ups and learn the programs/processes before heading to the big time. And many of those smaller companies aren't in LA where a glut of experienced artists hog all the jobs.

First tho, wipe the tears, research putting together a portfolio/demo of your best work, put together a man's suit worthy of an interview, research and practice some interview questions, and APPLY with zero regard for NO NO and more NO...

Winners do that, they keep pounding on the door until someone gives them the job they want. Then, I strongly suggest getting the fuck out of your parents house.

This goes for all you 4Chan winners...and many of you could use some serious university...schooling in design and graphics hasn't killed anyone yet. lol
>>

>>
>>541521
you won't intern at any company if the work you do isn't very good or at least outstanding in terms what is possible with detail and presentation.

unless the company go out of their way to offer you relocation there is no use for an internship. why would you shit out assets for minimum wage? that's degrading.
might as well go independent and start selling your assets on the market or make some quality tutorials

Its better to freelance rather than settle in one studio. I've worked on lawbreakers, some james bond FPS games, dead island franchise and dying light, and countless small games, and having ability to choose clients is best what comes from this work. You wouldnt believe shit you need to go through with hurr durr big PR allstars and listen to dumb shit they know nothing about. Its much better to just have excellent skill and work for larger amount of smaller clients - the word about you spreads faster, which translates to more and better work and options. In studio, you're basically a monkey that work for your boss yacht and thai prostitudes.
>>
OP here, its been almost 3 months and i forgot about my own thread here, lol.

Anyways, thanks for the tips you guys gave. I've been thinking about creating my own business. I know it does sounds cliche, cuz everybody says that, but trying to have your own business, like your own animated short movie, or a indie game, whatever, its better than going to a place to hear your boss screams "go do this shit for me" and then you obey like, as you guys said, a monkey.

I know a lot of people failed in creating your own shit, but a lot had sucess too. It inspires me stories like those guys who created Meat Ball, or Notch with that Minecraft shit, and others that isnt very famous, but still they make a living from it...

I'm creating some models and finishing my Fatal Frame Scenario in Maya to put in my Portfolio, but i'm really thinking about developing own shit...

Yes.
Sorry, late to the party, oldfag here and rarely on these days.

>find 4chan when 23 and in grad school for animation
>now 36 and animation director at rather well known game company
>it's in Raleigh NC and starts with an E

Here's some advice, never stop working on your stuff. Always strive to get better. Find people like you who inspire you and make friends with them. A big truth to the industry: It's all about who you know. The guy who got me my first 3d job was a guy who I knew in school 2 years prior who had gotten hired. Asked him to critique my work and we stayed in touch. I worked on several games which hit big and continued to develop, and actually got promoted pretty quickly.

Do move to the city where your dream job is located (or where there's a lot of opportunity in your specific field). Nobody hires from bumfuck Nebraska. Always keep improving your demo reel.

#1 most important thing, it's all who you know. Yes portfolios are very important, but If you don't know anyone, you won't get in unless you're exceedingly lucky. Go to networking groups. The sole purpose of networking groups is for you to be able to stand in front of a group of other people and give your 30 second elevator pitch. "Hi my name is XYZ, and I'm a character animator. I'm looking for contacts at X, Y, and Z game companies." Your goal is to find someone who knows someone at one of the companies who can introduce you. Your portfolio and demeanor should do the rest should you get an interview. I will go out on a limb and say that I've seen lesser artists hired because they knew someone.

Attitude is a big deal as well. Nobody wants to work with someone with a huge ego. Be confident, but drop any kind of "better than thou" attitude you might have. Be fucking amazing, but be humble about it. I've seen people not get hired because the team interviewed them and thought they were too much of an asshole.

Hope this helps!
>>
>>543055
best man for the job is pretty much a meme nowdays, the people i see that get work shouldn't get work at all.

these managers who are too busy on keeping a positive work environment run their business to the ground.
attitude is important but you should leave emotions outside of business
>>
>>543056
True, but easier said than done. I've seen my fair share of prima donnas and man children who gripe and complain about everything. Meanwhile I've got kids that bring you a solution when they complain about something, offer something constructive. Guess who I prefer on my team?

I'm also very much about trial by fire, but providing mentoring the whole way. If someone is open and receptive to that, they go far. If they're not, they stay put. My folks usually have about 6 weeks to prove they are up to snuff, and go through a boot camp style environment with their peers. It's one thing to make a perfect model or two for your reel, but it's a totally different thing to do them day in and day out.
>>
>>543059
if i had to hire someone who is an asshole but his quality and deliverance always on point, i would hire that asshole.

your business is out to compete other businesses who do the same stuff and if you run your business like its family owned people are gonna get comfortable and start asking you for favors. you need to have a straight face on the job and ignore forming bro circles.
i agree on the mentoring however, but i think people who are good in the first place are naturally open to advice.
>>
>>543060
>people are gonna get comfortable

Depends on the management style though. Deadlines are always there and they're always killer. Those are what keep people from being comfy. My thought is to hire the right people and make sure they're taken care of so they don't want to leave. This can also be done when you're choosing who to promote. I got to where I was because I was easy to work with and would always give it hell on a project even when told there were things wrong with it and to fix them. I'd always say "you got it" with a smile.

Which isn't to say there were not times when I thought the decision was bunk, but fortunately it's a two way street so I could argue my point constructively. I expect/provide the same for my folks. So far so good, and it's been 9 years.
>>
>>543060
>people who are good in the first place are naturally open to advice.

And I would totally agree with you there, 99% of the time they had to listen to that advice to get that good.
>>
>>543062
thanks for the insight and i hope i could use that advice someday. im only 26 currently.

when i read interviews of skillful people they always seem humble and explain things plainly. i guess working with other good people is humbling
>>
anyone who gits good no longer posts here anymore,

same with /ic/ and other boards.

so it's entirely possible people "make it" but there's no way to no for sure.

why would you come back here when you are making bank, attending 3d pool parties, fucking hot chicks and living like a playboi
>>
>>540679
Yeah "awesome guy".

I actually want a life lmao, that guy must want to be a bachelor for the rest of his life, more power to him. I actually want to spend time with my gf / friends and live a normal life.

I get burnt out of vidya which it's sole purpose is entertainment, if that guy doesn't get burnt out on 3d he must be a functioning autist or has a parasite in his brain.
>>
>>544003
3D is a field where you compete to be less poor

the guys that makes 100-200k a year are like 0.1%
>>
>>544001
Nah, we hang out occasionally, some of us are originalfags who frequented 4chan when we were students, me included.

>making bank
>3d pool parties
>fucking hot chicks
>living like a playboi

Gonna blow your mind here, but those don't really happen. I pay the bills sure, but >>544004
has it right.

The closest I come to going to 3d pool parties is going out with co-workers a few nights a month for craft beers. I dunno, maybe I should suggest a 3d pool party...at least one guy has a pool.

If you define living like a playboi as working 60+ hours a week, then yeah, living the dream!
>>

Your social life will be limited, yes.

100 is somewhat attainable within 5-10 years experience if you're at the right studios, and it's definitely above 0.1% of the talent pool. If anything there's a shortage of artists at the moment in parts of the industry if you're talented.

>>544003
Those people are rarer, but you don't necessarily need to be that much a freak to get good jobs. I know plenty of cg artists that never do personal work and have successful careers. The world isn't black and white.
>>
>>545025
Alright thats cool for the salary. Is it the same for other artists? Like concept artists?

I'm a shit tier 3d modeller but i do 3D stuff for Adult Swim, mostly make games for 1 of their live shows, it helps that im also a shit tier programmer.

Not great cash-wise but its fun and looks good on a resume. Faking it till i make it i guess
>>
>>545031

Don't know the full spectrum but I think it's similar for most artist positions. Keep in mind not all jobs are in the same demand, you'll have a heck of a lot more competition trying to be a concept artist than a matchmover, and the salary ceiling will likewise be higher.
>>
>>545522
spectrum like, autism spectrum? lol

i do think that there's going to be a AAA bubble.

most of the games they're making are becoming more and more... ungames. the only exception i actually know of is call of duty. say whatever you want, but you can fucking play call of duty and it's engaging and skill matters. but a lot of this shit is just so pandered out, so predictable, a lot of it is going backwards, and companies are hiring retards for the sake of diversity and allowing 'the pursuit of excellence' to be unforgivably diluted.

it can't go on forever like that without repercussion and we're going to see consolidations of pipelines and processes and next generation asset libraries that allow small groups of people who are talented and passionate and have a vision to make games that will be real blockbusters - and this exact same thing is going to collide with AAA studios being unable to maintain quality and pander to everyone at once.

there will be more variety and specificity of games in the next 5 years, and in 10-15 years, it's going to get to the point where all games are basically compatible with each other and generic.

hardware is the only real issue. consoles are going to attempt to die a dignified death as they start running windows 10. and they start selling motherboards with integral NVIDIA chips.

I wouldn't want to. There was a guy who posted about hsi time working at Pixar but all he did was hair, nothing but animating some hair for 2 years straight and then he quit for a year cause it was driving him nuts. The best positions that we all want are so scarce that you will never be able to get there anyway, you'd just be hench #536 who animated a hand.

When I went to look for an internship I didn't want to do anything but high res stills. Because one of my friends ended up interning at a company he didn't like he figured it would fit with what I wanted and it turned out to be one of the biggest commercial/photography stills producing companies in my country. Because I was also good at drawing it improved their cgi workflow and I was allowed to stay permanently. I do work for big companies and photographers and see my shit hanging around daily but we are a small team which makes it better.
