Mental Ray is gone, Arnold is standard render. If you want to render on more than one node you have to buy additional licenses.

Depends. Its way easier to set up, and it gives a perfect result given enough time/ renderpower.
But its not perfect for architecture, especially indoors.
It runs only on CPU so its slow but very stable even with billions of polys.

Really curious to see how this effects other renderers. I'm using Vray for the most part but I think this could be a good time to change.

Just learn Arnold, should be easy for you if you know Vray already.
But keep using Vray and/or add Redshift in the mix and you're set for every render situation.
Arnold is superplusgood, but slow.

Because you want to have options, there is no "one fits all" solution except maybe this one.
Having one slow but physical plausible renderer, one super fast, and one which could be anything in between.
If you render in passes you could even mix them.

Also when people say render, arevtalking about when you press render and it shows you what your model looks like? Because it normally takes a few seconds.
