That project is very unique, first time seeing a CG work executing traditional Japanese animation, mainly traditional sakuga in 3D. I think they won an award because of that. I always compare those smoke/explosion animation on other Japanese works, others always look subpar or generic.

CG director having an expertise on both traditional and CG animation is the best way to improve nips' 2.5D. Look at Graphinica now, they improved even though they have amateur animators, they did a mistake on Haifuri, which is embarassing for a CG animator.
