realistically, it's going to take you a few years to do anything decent. Unless you eat, sleep, and shit 3d everyday. The only way to progress is to practice but even then, who knows how well you'll have done. Depends on what you want to get out of it too. Depends on what programs you intend to use.

Specialize early and you can do it. Mobile will transition fully to 3d within a few years so it will bring more opportunities.

If you git gud you'll be able to make a living as a 3D modeller.

It doesn't necessarily mean you'll be working for a top studio, you might be cranking out porn or making assets for Daz but there are lots of way to make money at 3D if you're good.

How about you just do it?

That's what I told myself 6 months ago and it's been going fine. I'm half NEET though, 20 hours of work and financial aide from my 3 studio classes per semester at local community college to learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Pirated 3d software and have been learning it in my spare time so I can make assets for mods. CGP has been invaluable but honestly the best vids I've watched so far were free on YouTube. Edge3D has been amazing for learning Zbrush.

I did game art course specializing in enviro 3d stuff and now that I'm finishing a lot of minor companies sent me offers while I've succesfully applied and passed art tests for actual game companies.

As long as you're presistent, keep up with the tech, use the right programs and frontpage on artstation you'll be fine

It's possible to get good and make a living. But it's A LOT of hard work not just on modeling, texturing, lighting, etc. but also on networking and keeping your eyes open for new jobs.

But even if you "made it" you'd still be completely expendable on any team and make half of what the programmers make. /3/ is the ditch digging, the burger-flipping, of the digital world. There's shit tons of people who get into it because they know that traditional artists make no money at all yet they couldn't handle STEM.
