Welcome to the wild world of fuckery.

The world is an amazing, nauseating, hypnotic and repulsive place, and it's time we explored a bit. Post nature at its best, its worst, its strangest or its funniest, just post it up.

Know something neat? Let's hear it. Have questions? let's hear them. Think of this as a free natural science class led by foul-mouthed assholes who likely need a shave.

Now, snails. Did you know that they lick things apart? they have a sort of tooth-coated tongue and use that to rasp their food. Snails can also get drunk, but often end up dead from alcohol poising before the high wears off.

Also, snails are hermaphrodites, and when two meet to mate, they "fight" one another with their penis. Whoever loses gets to be the female.

Apes can't swim.

Due to the difference between body density, bone structure and the like, most apes cannot swim. In fact, they sink like rocks, by and large. Some monkeys can, but the vast majority of the great apes can't even float, let alone swim. it's why most zoo enclosures have moats around outdoor ape areas.

Also, gorillas have a special display they do when it rains. Almost all species do it, and there's not much variation. It's somewhere between excitement and anger, and we have no idea why, exactly, they do it, other then just being annoyed that it's raining.

Owls have been observed to murder.

Owls are amazing predators, capable of silent flight, and with night vision that rivals any of their daytime raptor cousins, they are also very intelligent. They make poor pets, but have on numerous occasions exhibited behavior (depending on breed) that ranks just below or equal to parrots and ravens.

They have also been observed to kill other animals, often other birds, and not actively feed on them. For some reason, owls and crows seem to have beef with one another, and have been seen to go out of their way to kill eachother apparently just for the hell of it. Some feel it's a territoriality behavior, or "seeding" their home range to attract scavengers to feed off of, but there's still no 100% agreed on reason why owls will sometimes just kill things simply to kill them.

I really like the idea of a regular "nature" thread.

However nature is a pretty broad term so I think for these threads, the content should concern and be limited only to zoology, biology (marine, micro, ect) and the botanical branches of natural sciences. Physics and chemistry, astrology and the like are all "natural sciences" too, but really, i think these could be localized in their own threads since the content is drastically different. Also i think anthropology shouldn't be included either since it has too many "human/cultural" elements related to it. Perhaps it could limited only to content related specifically to apes or any other, strictly non-human related species.

There's a lot of potential here but we should be clear on what it is we want and don't want.

Agreed, but i don't think it should be limited just to critters, animal and vegetable. Strange weather or geology shouldn't be excluded...or should it? I don't think a split is needed, but maybe that should be it. Might need to make a OP copypasta for it someday.

they kinda do...they still have eggs, they just don't lay them. Technically they are still egg births, but internal? nature is odd.

Hippos are fucking terrifying.

They look cute, all chubby and a little clumsy, like a pudgy, corgi-like horse with a funny face, right? Yeah, and they can sprint like a horse too, are INSANELY territorial, and their teeth cut like razor blades. They kill loads of people every year, and are omnivores, not herbivores, no matter what people say.

Steve Irwin, the guy who used to kiss deadly snakes and handle shit that could make your skin melt? when asked when he was most truly afraid, he stated the only time was when he was crossing a river in a raft that was filled with hippos.

Don't forget how hippos don't actually know how to swim and instead RUN through the water faster than many critters could swim through it.

Depends on the animal. It's the difference between a baby sitting with a big dog, and a baby sitting with a snapping turtle.

Sharks have sensitive noses. No shit, but they're also apparently erogenous zones.

Shark mating is a tricky subject. It's never been well-recorded, and most shark's savage territoriality makes getting together, even to bone, a risky proposition. However, when they are very well fed, like, say, on a floating whale corpse, their behavior changes.

They become much less aggressive, and start to nuzzle one another. this can continue for quite a while, and appears to actually help trigger heat for a shark female. Judging by how they will nuzzle for a while, then swim off to the lonely places of the ocean seems to imply things, not to mention the nuzzling makes both shark sexes' genitals flush.

So there you go, if you have a furry or monstergirl fetish, shark girl sex comes with the smell of rotting whale, snapping teeth, and lots of nose nuzzling. Likely not a negative to some folks...

They very technically do swim, but rely on their natural buoyancy more then anything else. It says something that, in the land of shit that can kill you by passing too close to you, hippos are viewed as a real death sentience.

>>1788692
Honestly, yes, but without any changes from domestication. They don't play with their food, however. All business, it seems.

Wild hogs are a plague.

Pigs are neat animals, but they have one nasty habit: most go feral in one generation. Take your average pink farm piggy. Toss him out in the woods, and provided he doesn't die, his kids will have bristles and tusks. One or two more generations, and they will look like something out of deepest africa.

They are strong, territorial, eat EVERYTHING, and breed like rabbits. Wild hogs are a rising problem in many places, especially in the southern USA. They also have a bad habit of driving out or eating other wild game.

Ongoing efforts to cut down their spread are meeting with some success. Unlike many invasive species, they're tasty, so that at least works against them. Oh, and their cannibals as well.

Jumping spiders are smart as hell

If you made everything scale, basically ramping up a jumping spider to human scale, they would be as smart as a primate. They make plans, set up ambushes, and even seem to display what could be emotions. They're even able to plan ahead, plotting out prey's position and rate of movement, observing the forward terrain, and setting up the best ambush.

Some breeds can even pass the mirror test, eventually realizing that it's themselves, not another spider. We started to really evolve into what we are when we figured out how to get food, water, shelter, and not get eaten. Would be interesting to see what would happen to these little guys if they started along the same path.

Important distinction between 5.56 and .223, while they have the same round dimensions, 5.56 is much higher pressure than .223

5.56 does make a good round for hogs, as the sort of tradeoff for having less mass is that its strength lies in its speed.

We still don't fully understand how flocking works.

For a very long time, it was assumed flocks of birds had leaders of some kind, some sort of alpha bird that directed actions, if only by being the first to make them. However, ongoing observation and research has shown that the birds respond too quickly and too unified for any kind of communication to be leading their efforts, even if it was very subtle and fast.

Herd behavior is one thing, but schools of fish and flocks of birds often respond like a single unified being. Theories vary, but there are several who think some kind of collective group-mind kicks in when they get above a set concentration. If you've ever been at a huge party or concert when the cops bust in, you've likely felt a version of it. Research is ongoing, especially in the computer networking field. Understanding how, and why, these flocks work could help create more robust and adaptive computer networks.

Say whatever else you like about humanity, we're the shit when it comes to applied understanding.

social spiders are already a thing, and while not a civilization, they do work together well.

"Social spider" is sort of a blanket term for a wide section of spiders that live together, sometimes in truly/horrifyingly massive colonies. They are generally tiny, and make massed webs to collect food. They work together to collect more dangerous and robust food, and rear children as a community, as much as arachnids raise their young, anyway.

They resemble ants in many ways, but with a stronger "independent" streak. They range all over, from Australia to the USA, and can be a bit of a nuisance, as they eat EVERYTHING they can catch.

On the topic of civilization, most critters that have the potential to rise up are generally limited by either size or lifespan. So if someone finds a way to breed jumping spiders the size of, say, dogs or cats, that live for 30-40 years, we may all be fucked.
>>

got a question for you all

what makes something intelligent? how is intelligence born? I mean you could kind of brush the question in case of primates, dolphins and the like saying they are "higher animal forms" or something like that, but a fucking spider? and why is this one so distinct, out of the thousands of species there are?

is it related to chemicals? to the intrinsic ability of the species to pass genes? are the parents teaching their offspring?

I'm well aware of the ambiguous nature of the question, just throw your thoughts at it

Would you believe I got in to this same discussion about two weeks ago while drafting a short story?

The big thing is, where is the "cut off" for intelligence? Tool use, planning, fire, critical thinking, art, at what point does smart tip over to sentience? In the end, it comes down to us. We make the goalposts, so "smart like us" is what we generally look for.

For a rough pocket checklist, you want to look at communication, higher thinking, and self-awareness. If something can communicate with others of its species beyond simple "i wanna smash" or "fuck off" displays, that's a checkbox. If it is (or appears to be) capable of thinking beyond basic survival, to create or improve its situation for reasons beyond maintenance of existence, that's a check. Finally, if it is self-aware, able to look in a mirror and know that what it sees is a reflection, to be able to understand itself as a singular existence that is part of, but also separate from the environment is another check.

However, it's all rather nebulous, and very human-centric. But we're the ones doing the checks, so that'll work for now. More check boxes = more intelligent.

Now here's a crow sledding.

>we're the shit when it comes to applied understanding
Aside from intelligence, magic fingers, an upright gait and an immense capacity for heat regulation, there's one other thing we've got going for us:

Ranged combat, notably throwing.
Mantis shrimp kill at a few centimeters, some spitting fish can hit targets three meters away (vertically).
Mankind can throw rocks and pointy sticks, and either will hurt, incapacitate or outright kill prey of various sizes at distances well past ten meters.
Coupled with the ability to track and chase wounded prey, this has probably made primitive man a formidable predator.

Insect venom can do things other then make you want to jump off a bridge.

Bee venom is very good for arthritis. Some breeds of wasp venom have been seen to help break up blood clots. Many forms of insect-based venom are used in modern medicines, and even the more nasty types of spider venom, such as the necrotizing bite of the Brown Recluse, are being explored as options against growths and tumors that are surgically delicate.

Also, the rule of thumb: if it bites you and you die, it's venomous. If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous. Whip that little bit out at the next animal discussion, show what a smartass you are.

Despite all the cool things stinging insects can do, most (me included) don't get along overly well with them. Things to remember to avoid a confrontation: most flying stingers sleep at night, and don't like cool temperatures. If you find a nest, go out on a cool night and take it down, not the middle of the day, much less running.

You're welcome to use commercial sprays, but one old-fashioned and very effective bug killer is a 2-3 to 1 ratio mix of water and kerosene in a spray bottle. it'll work, but for chrissakes store it in a safe place and don't smoke while you do it!

They can cloak massive, massive areas. Google "social spider webs", or even "social spider webs forest" and go to images. Or don't, if you'd like not to shiver right now.

Let's talk snake for just a second.

Anacondas are some of the biggest snakes in the world, and belong to the "grow until something kills them, food permitting" class of animal. Massive and VERY strong, it has been shown, once in a televised event that, while anacondas don't generally hunt human, they will happily eat them if they've recently died, or are just crippled. Not to say they don't hunt people, just less common.

Also, fun fact: during the Spanish conquest of the new world, there was a report of a man losing two porters to a snake nearly 120 feet long. Sounds like bullshit...but the same snake was reported two more times from other, unrelated sources over a period of a few weeks.

To give you an idea of how scary that would be, the shark from Jaws is ~25 feet long.

Goddamn nature, man. It was likely going to lay eggs in the spider's body so its larva could eat the thing inside out. See if you can follow it next time you see it, bet you'll see some cool shit.

>>1789405
See, now here we are, i was waiting for you. The way i see it, we should be kind to natural stuff. Why? Is it because we have an obligation? that we're evil sinners and must redeem ourselves to our earthmother? No, not at all. We should be nice because you don't shit where you live. It's pleasant to walk in the woods, exciting to see a bear kill a deer. because of that, we should maintain our parks and such. Ecological egotism, the idea that nature should be preserved so that I have something neat to look at...if being a hippy-dip doesn't grab you, it works.

I'm short on facts this time, so here's a kitten fighting a feral hamster. Draw from it what you will.

We're just lucky that the current oxygen levels cannot sustain giant arthropods anymore, if the planet goes through another green bloom it might, but we'd likely die during it.

Cephalopods are also amazingly intelligent, and likely the only reason they aren't the dominant form of life on the planet is that they are primarily solitary and don't possess language.

some breed of that. Thankfully, the long bit isn't a stinger, just an egg layer. They're nearly harmless to humans...to other bugs they're the embodiment of body horror, laying their eggs inside others to slowly consume them alive.

Gotta love nature!

I don't have much to say for this one. Pigeons are kinda dumb. I mean, sure, they're amazing works of art from an evolutionary stand point, but...not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

My dad worked in a grain silo just like this, back when he was a kid. had to go inside and scrape grain off into the grinder, which involved walking on the quicksand surface of it with a rope around him. Lost his boot into the center grinder once, said it came out in bits no bigger then your thumb. Fun stuff.

Doesn't stop the mass-murdering of near-extinct animals. I mean whatever makes you feel better. I expect possibly just household animals to be the only ones to be around when all the other wild life has been killed off for profit or on life support in nature conserves, just to be moved to zoo's.

At least they won't have to suffer for long and we can admire their once beauty through tablets and computer screens.

I was watching a documentary on this topic sort of. They said that the one thing that humans have that, let's say chimps don't, is that humans actively teach others. Most other animals learn by copying, but humans actively try to pass on knowledge. This makes human collective intelligence advance more quickly.

They were showing how some chimps figure out how to use basic tools, but only a small percentage of chimps will try to copy the technology. And the chimps don't have any real interest in teaching each other.

That reminds me of this article that was discussing the differences between 2d and 3d fighting games, and they said that one of the most important differences was the projectile. The projectile is a thing that can hit the other player but can't be hit back for trade damage, so it allows for "zoning". In a similar way, projectiles may give us the ability to affect animals or limit their advantages over us.

Even before man developed hunting tools we were formidable predators. Pack hunters that can simply outlast any prey it chases.

A gazelle getting chased by a cheetah doesn't need to run for a very long time in order to reach safety, as long as it doesn't get caught to begin with. A gazelle getting chased by a human is fucked either way, as it will have to run until it passes out from exhaustion. One of humanity's greatest strengths in this regard is pure stamina.

We may not be the fastest or the strongest, but humans are one of the best endurance runners on the planet, and early man simply outran their prey to death. Must be an excruciating way to die.

The Pinching Cave Spider, or African Cave Spider, or as it is more commonly known, Jesus Christ What The Fuck.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblypygi

Remember, boys and girls, there is a goddamn reason we are afraid of the dark. It is because the more we stray from our home environment, the weirder shit gets. I love scifi and space opera as much as the next person, but i think it's high time for some kind of movie, game, or book series about exploring the madness of our own planet.

Hell, you wouldn't even have to change much, just make what's already around a little bigger and/or more aggressive. imagine pic related at about 3-4 feet tall.

This is a stoat, member of the weasel family, distant relation to the ferret.

They are/were often hunted both for sport and the pure white pelts they grow in winter. They can be a bit of an invasive species, and amusingly make alright-ish pets if you raise them from birth.

Also, they are carnivores with a taste for rabbit, and can drop specimens 2-3 times their size.

>Pinching Cave Spider, or African Cave Spider

You just made those names up, no one calls them that. It's either whip spiders, tailless whip scorpions or amblypygids.

>there is a goddamn reason we are afraid of the dark.
Yes, the reason is that our main sensory organ, the eyes, don't work well in the dark and we can't perceive potential threats easily anymore. It's the fear of the unknown that makes darkness scary.

That's also why you think that harmless little whip spider is scary. If you knew anything about them you'd know they are completely harmless and also very shy and easily scared creatures.

The one in the webm is heavily abused btw. It's missing one of its antenniform legs (the long antenna like thing) with which it feels the environment. That is its primary sensory organ, so it's half blind and scared to death. Also they don't react like that unless you continually threaten them and prevent them from running away, because that is what they always try to do first. The dude in the webm is being a colossal dick to a harmless animal.

>imagine pic related at about 3-4 feet tall
Body length? Still harmless. They stuff that is small compared to their body size and are scared of anything bigger. One with 3ft body would eat stuff that's 1, maybe 2ft long max.

A fair amount of folks call them cave spiders, or even pinching spiders. Is it right? hell no, but is everything we call a bug an actual, true bug?

Yes, they are mostly, if not entirely harmless. They can also be unsettling as hell to the human sensibility, as things often are as they deviate from the human body shape. Also, while i don't like animals being abused and such, this one at least wasn't abused by the fellow making the video. Was found damaged, and you have to admit, it makes for interesting video. People who wouldn't normally give a damn will hopefully get interested...not the worst of outcomes.

As for body size and shape, it was more for dramatic effect. In the same way that many of the dinosaurs in old comics or movies wouldn't have actually eaten people or crushed cities, and big whip spider wouldn't actually be all that dangerous. However, it looks neat, and looks like it could be dangerous, and again, if it makes people interested, all the better.

Do appreciate the info all the same, sorry if it bugged ya.

Here's an apex urban predator. I'll spare commentary, apparently.

well goddamn, i had bad information then. Are they ok "pets"? I can't imagine it's easy to take care of them. Fun fact, apparently this is the thing mad-eye mooney tortures then kills in the harry potter movie. Assumed at the time it was some made-up fantasy critter.

Bears are neat. Black bears are a bit like a skittish dog in temperament, provided you're not trespassing near their den, or near cubs. They also stink like a load of rotten shit in a bin of warm garbage. Brown bears are much more dangerous, and much bigger as a general rule.

No one will ever believe this, but a cousin of mine was close friends with the girlfriend of the grizzlyman, the dude who tried to live among the bears and ended up getting eaten on recording. Apparently there's video, but it doesn't show much. He was also kinda nuts, even at the best of times, and nobody was all that surprised when it happened, horrible as it was.

The species in the webm (Euphrynichus amanica) is a more advanced species, but something like Damon diadema or Damon medius is pretty easy to care for. They're also much more available and cheap.

They are however strictly nocturnal so to see their very fascinating and complex behaviors (some species are actually social too!) and how they hunt you'll have to install red LEDs above their enclosure (they can't see red light) or deal with the fact that you'll never see your pet.

If you're actually interested in owning one or several of these ask these guys: >>>/an/2432427

Also the one in Harry Potter is actually (more or less) an oversized, badly animated Damon species. I think they also say it has deadly venom, lel

I'm three days later, but I would like to add to your post that one of those "emotions" you mention is believed to be curiosity.
I read that biologists thought curiosity was a positive trait that helped them to find preys and actually it's more often beneficial than not. In other words, for such an active hunter that possesses fast travel (for their size), curiosity gives them an edge for the race of the natural selection.
I'm trying to find the article right now, I read it like two years ago I think.

I've always found it ironic how Americans poke fun at Australia for having venomous snakes and spiders. So fucking what lol! Unless you actually live in the rural outback or a really bushy/forested area you will rarely see or encounter them. Go to America and you either get fucking alligators in your pools or bears walking down your street or nice big twister to come wreck your entire town. And don't even get me started on that Brown recluse shit. Seriously guys, it's a lot safer here.

It's something about their movements. They move back and forth a lot, in a way that just doesn't register as a predator to rabbits. Real interesting shit.
Imagine if there was a creature that ate people and hunted by just casually walking up and shaking your hand. After you extended your arm to its, it pulled you in and ate you. Kinda like that.

well are you expecting a cameleon to give lesson, have you seen how slow they are?
>>

I would reason that it is the ability to act contrary to your basic biological needs.

On this path of logic, we can reason that organisms with a repeatable, triggerable responses to threats or the motivations of sleep, sex and hunger are less intelligent that organisms with seemingly individual or unique responses to the same stimuli.

That being said, the trade-off for instinct vs intellect is that organisms with self-defined responses to stimuli must first learn the effectiveness of those responses through learning; where as those with lesser intelligence have those responses hard-wired into their biology.

I'm curious to see how that sits with people.

r vs k selection; the chameleon shits out babies and lets them fend for themselves with minimal care. Species like this need their babies to come out of the womb able to fend for themselves.

k selected species rear and look after their young and tend to form pair bonds to ensure steady supply of resources and safety

Ok, i might be totally wrong here, but if i remember right, they still have actual eggs, as in shells and so forth, they just don't lay them. Human "eggs" can't survive outside, i think lizard ones are more robust? I might well be talking out of my ass, but still, i think that's how it works.

Pigeons are super nice to other birds and amazing pilots. I hate people who feed them.

Normal Wasps are harmless if you don't act stupid around them. I mow my lawn and a wasp sits on my forearm chilling. I get a little bit nervous but she just wanted to sit there for a couple seconds. I have never been stung by a wasp and that happens almost every week when i mow the lawn or work in my garden.

I only hate bloodsucking animals like mosquitos or ticks but also aphids they suck the "blood" of plants.

Must be nice to be so famous for your voice that others do all your research for you and then cameramen will sit filming for weeks in leech-infested waters just so that you can drive up and do a 2 minute segment and then leave again to go to the next place that's been organised for you.
