Not OP, but I went and tried it out and in it's current state it appears to be quite broken. Least from what I could figure out, tried it in Mupen and Project64, music is odd, sound fx are missing, and after a while the whole game will just jump into overdrive with everything sped up to an almost unplayable speed.

Maybe some one here can help me out. I've been wanting to play Pokemon Snap again for nostalgias sake. Unfortunately, the ROM is faulty and it won't acknowledge a photo being taken. The red dot indicator doesn't show up, meaning the Pokemon signs aren't acknowledged, thus making the last level impossible to get to without cheats. Also, some Pokemon have certain actions that take place when they're first snapped, which doesn't happen.
I heard there was a fix, but google offers mixed answers. Does anyone here have personal experience with it?
An immensely enjoyable one of impeccable recommendation I just went through was "Super Mario Bros. 3mix"

yes, there is one video plug in that fixes that issue. Im a huge pokemon snap fan and had that problem for years. The plug in is pretty rough to run and most other games experience extreme slowdown. "Shunyuan's SoftGraphic 1.5.0"
Is there any particular reason why extensive ROM hacks of Nintendo games (as in games for Nintendo consoles) happen to be rare? I mean the Genesis, or Sonic at least, has dozens of overhaul hacks made, but the NES only has like... two? Is it due to possibly unfriendly hardware, the lack of interest, or

It takes the Sonic Heroes concept, and makes it better in all regards on Sonic 1+2. Much better than it sounds. Also you can play as Team Chaotix and as less than three people, which means you can play the game normally with the new mechanic and with both games together. Which incidentally also makes this as close to a definitive version of Sonic 1 and 2 as we're going to get until someone makes a thing like Sonic 3 Complete for them.

Mega Man has a number of huge overhaul hacks, there are several good Mario ones, there's more than one completely new NES-style Zelda, etc etc.

Yeah, there's tons of NES hacks, but there are also very few hacks that are extensive. Minus Infinity is probably the only one.
The NES is a fucking oddity. It's well remembered and well studied, but almost everything made for it is on the same level as... those Famicom games that are by companies that only made a handful of games, like VAP or some shit.

Christmas Version is a hack of Gold. With flash carts and stuff you can often emulate older games on newer systems. Pretty sure you can play GBC roms on a 3DS if you have a special SD card.

There doesn't seem to be any over at Romhacking.net, however I did find that the GBA port which was Japan-only has English text hidden within it. Maybe the GBA port fixes up issues that were present in the GBC version

I'm trying to make a Gen 2 ROMhack, but I've been in the planning stages for well over a year. Once you learn Z80 assembly, you have the potential to change every little facet of these games, which is actually kind of daunting.

Recently got recommended a Gold hack, Pokémon Bronze.
I've gotten to the second Gym thus far and, while the dialogue can get slightly childish (not toilet humor but just corniness) and the new sprites aren't top notch, it's a nice new region thus far. I was wondering if anyone had played it to the end to know if it stays the same quality throughout.
Not finished, but when downloading said Bronze version I noticed someone making a Platinum Demake from GSC.
Apparently an alpha might be coming out soon, planned to go up to Floraroma Town.
Didn't the guy who did Star Road make a romhack of Paper Mario where you take 2x or 1.5x normal damage? That would be worth including in the pastebin, I think.

I remember a while ago i used an emualtor to create a cheat and then modified the game to always have the cheat enabled (game was FF6,always 99 Potions in the first slot) but that was quite a while ago and i remember having the convert the byte order or something like that.
thanks, yea thats the phrase I was looking for, although ill admit when it comes to hacking games like earthbound(my fav) pk hack is by far the best choice, but i do like to play around with HxD and see what kind of chaos or ingenious hacks/mods I can pound out in a few hours.
Blame crappy tools, not hackers. Older versions of AddMusic (a tool which lets you add custom music into SMW ROM) were only compatible with ZSNES. That's why so many older SMW hacks work only on that emulator.
The most hours I've sunk into any ROM hack is probably Super Mario 74. It's not very good honestly, but I keep coming back to it for some reason. It has too many segments that require "precision jumping", which the SM64 engine and camera aren't really optimized for, and ends up feeling a lot harder than it needs to be. That said I haven't played around much with any other ROM hacks, unless you count Somari, which I bought a NES repro cart of. Good stuff.

I don't have a lot of experience with ROMhacking, but the SM64 editor seems very sophisticated and easy to use. I was thinking of recreating the Johto region from Pokemon GSC in the SM64 editor and make a Pokemon themed platformer. Like, every dungeon, cave and forest could be easy levels and the gyms would be difficult ones with bosses at the end. Considering the star system of SM64 there could also be a more or less linear story similar to Pokemon GSC. Would this be too difficult to do for a n00b? I admit I mostly wanna do this to experience a Pokemon adventure in N64 style 3D.
I recently found a neat Perfect Dark/Goldeneye hack that allowed them to be played with a mouse and keyboard and at 60 fps. Does anyone know of something similar existing for the Turok games, namely Turok 2? I simply can't deal with those awful controls anymore.
You're only proving my point though, if they weren't incompetent they would've broadened the compatibility for AddMusic to continue support for other emulators (namely SNES9x), instead they just decided to dickride ZSNES because they assumed everyone used that to play rom hacks.

Barkley is in NBA Jam (not tournament edition though), and Payton is in tournament but not the original since they only had 2 players per team and Kemp and Schrempf were bigger stars than Payton when the game was released
Yeah, true. The Barkley mention was because later revisions of the SNES and Gensis game had Dan Marjele instead of Barkely. Acclaim lost the rights to Barkley's name and likeness to Accolade (who made Barkley Shut Up and Jam).

Crystal Emu Edition and Pokemon Throwback for the Gen 1 remake have already been mentioned. There's also Ultra Violet for the Gen 1 remakes, but there's a horrible bug postgame and some non-canon changes.

Um, yeah... there wasn't really much that was actually done before the "creator" gave up and started bullshitting us that he was still working on it, so it wasn't "cancelled" so much as called out as the vaporware that it was.
Can't remember the name but i recall a sonic hack where the rings were onion rings and picking them up made you gain weight. Rin enough and you loose the weight but eat to many rings and you are obese and can't run therefore you die
Basically it's an extra hard mode for sonic.
I'm looking for a good SMW or SM64 hack. I guess you could also list off other game if you really want, but I won't bother with RPG hacks.
By good, I mean refined, not seemingly slapped together and shit actually 'goes together' in the hack, visually and gameplay wise. I am willing to make some exceptions to that though.
Aside from them being refined, I have no other specifications. I can appreciate a hack that goes and does it's own thing, as long as it does it well.
The only Super Mario World hack I've played was Brutal Mario. I didn't love it necessarily because it was hard though, I loved it because the hacker went so out of his way to implement so much random shit and make them at least halfway work. I'm also a hacker, so I couldn't help but appreciate his efforts on it. Not very refined at times, but he tried. All the extra content made up for it.
The only SM64 hack I've bothered playing was Rainbow Road. Which, as far as I know, I 100%ed it. Without savestates at all. I love the crap out of that game.
So, totally open to suggestions. I'm in a platforming mood at the moment, so I'm looking for something mario specific, but if you list something you feel is worth listing, I might look into it eventually.
I've looked at some other SMW hacks myself, but out of the 8ish I tried, they were all garbage, so I stopped trying to look for myself.

As for SM64 hacks, Super Mario: Star Road is the best one.
I personally love when they reject updated versions of hacks that were previously accepted.

RM4MI is the obvious one.
For 5, the only one I've ever seen is Rockman 5: Air Sliding. It's pretty good, it has the obvious gimmick of being able to slide in the air and levels are based around that.
I haven't found a finished good MM6 hack yet. I've heard of both Rockman 6: Innocent and Rockman 6: Skype, but to my knowledge both are still WIP so I haven't tried to look for them yet.

This is one of my favorite mods. It's amazing how colors and improved sprites can breathe new life into a game like Pogeymanz.

As to World 0, I just went down the pipe at World 2 and found it. I'm at World 7 thus far and it seems there's a pipe for every even-numbered world.
Just finished 3mix, and I'm honestly surprised at the amount of stuff they packed into it. Lots of extra music, lots of extra new enemies, worlds based off various games, and I was most surprised at
postgame Star Coins in the form of the comets from Galaxy.I think it's up there with RM4MI in the amount of shit it adds.

The page and readme are in Spanish, and I can't read Spanish to save my life, so does anyone who does know where to download this hack? It looks really good and I want to see if it plays as good as it looks. (the hack itself I think is a mix between English and Spanish)
I've played 0.2.5 and it already has a lot of new Pokémon and moves, so maybe that itself could be added to the list if there's no download for 0.3.0.

There, I found it somehow.
That download only has the readme in it, not the patch file. I couldn't tell if it was an error that it wasn't in the download or if there was some other download link. If that's the only one I suppose I'll wait until it's corrected, I'm just rather itching to play it and see the abilities in the game.
Followup, because bitch, I found something awesome. Pic related.
I've played though brainlord quite a handful of times. I've 'never' seen this mob before.
I 'finally' found out how map loading is done and, with it, I found out how entity loading is also done.
As such, I've been trying to document every 'enemy ID' I can find and test, that's how I found this bad boy.
It flashes really quicky, as per a transparent effect. Also teleports whenever the player gets close to it.
Sadly, it seems to only last a few seconds on screen before the game freezes. In one of my crashes, I noticed the map getting corrupt, so it either relies on a specific map type(Or something like that), or it simply corrupts the map.
I have no idea how tcrf ended up finding a awesome debug menu and unused sounds, but missed this unused mob.
But yeah, felt like sharing.
I know it's been a long time, but I finally got around to applying that fix. You have no idea how happy I am to finally play the genre the way it was meant to be played.
I almost ran down to Blockbuster to try and have my photos printed out at the booth.
Graphics hack is pretty good.
I've only played a little bit of Brown, but I was disappointed that they kept the same starter pokemon. I was expecting Onix to be one of them or something, it would have made it interesting

At the moment I have alot of other things I'm also finding that I could add to tcrf, such as explanations to the Debug Menu, as I'm figuring it out. As well as a few unused rooms.
I want to wait until I feel I've found almost everything I feel I could before I begin adding it to tcrf, else I'd end up adding something new to the page every few hours instead of just doing it all at once.

Thanks. Scrounging up enough levels for a proper demo was tough, so the difficulty's pretty unbalanced right now. Paragoomba Panic in particular is World 7 material. Once I come up with some easier levels I'll reorder everything.

Not too long. I'll work on it for a few days until I hit a stumbling block and then I won't touch it for weeks. Unless the problems are interesting, in which case I might marathon them overnight. I'm a NEET so I can afford to do that sort of thing.
Yeah I tried that out earlier today and didn't get past the first level. I'll probably go back and take another shot at it, but I really wasn't enjoying the changes to powerups. Its kind of cool you stay fire Mario for two hits, but not reverting to small Mario was throwing me off, thinking I had another chance to mess up.
Overall it looks really well done, and obviously a ton of love went into making it.
I actually did want to keep Small Mario but I wanted lasting powerups more. It opens up a lot of doors when it comes to level design. Ideally I'd have Small Fiery Mario and Small Raccoon Mario but last time I tried that I just made a mess. The engine really fought me on that one.
I like designing levels that expect you to duck or smash bricks, anyway.
It's just a matter of getting used to it.
The first 10 minutes I was like "the fuck, I was big, why did I die?", but I ended up liking it. I think it changes the way you play the game quite a lot, and doesn't give blatant advantages/disadvantages to the player.

I only completed the intro level, and it was "kinda" good (it's more or less a difficulty hack, and it's not so pretty. At least it isn't cheap difficulty). I liked the fact that the game automatically gave you the boots after clearing the intro level.
I read that there are good tools for making megaman X hacks now, so there should me some more in the making. Also, not /vr/ related, but check out Megaman X: corruption.
This fucking game.
Castlevania Overflow Darkness is so damn hard but the level design is just really really good. Playing it was like being in an abusive relationship. Brought me to tears but when I beat it, it was so damn good.

No such thing, unless you're talking about the few Virtual Console releases or using a regular DS cart like an R4 or something. 3DS homebrew is still in diapers, we barely got a working NES emulator with no sound, it'll be a while before we get other systems.

Tried it out, I like it. The abilities really makes the game interesting; the one part so far (I'm at 3 badges) that really struck me is Sprout Tower when fighting a Gastly. Your only choice in starter is Eevee, and Eevee only learns Normal- and Ground-type moves up to where I was at, so I was just going to use Mud-Slap until Levitate made it null and void and I had to go catch a second Pokémon to train instead of just plowing through the game with my starter, a really nice touch.
Other than that, the graphics are a lot more appealing up to the point in which they were updated (the updated tileset has been applied up to right before Union Cave), and the game has a good variety of new Pokémon/moves and the Fairy-type (Whitney's Gym is reworked from Normal-type to Fairy-type since most of the Pokémon in that Gym became Fairy-type with the type's introduction), so it's pretty good.
The one thing I'm not a fan of is the Gym Leaders all being named after the hacker's friends with their own OC sprites, but that's a nitpick. I think it's definitely a good hack.
I wish more games did something like this. I would totally play a DQ game with one. Or a Pokemon randomizer that actually randomized the maps.

How would that be done when Pokémon is so linear? You'd have to make a tool that can essentially self-create decent new regions (actually looks like a city instead of Glitch City graphics, all have the necessary important buildings, etc.), and that would be the hack of all hacks if someone could do that.

Map design is lazy, but levels are quite varied and fun to play. There are some "Mario 64 Bowser" themed levels that are quite well done. I didn't finish it because the sound fucked up midgame and never recovered. Probably because of hardware and software (Snes9X EX Plus on OUYA...yeah)

Toying with a Luck Run on the Japanese version at the moment. Limiting myself to the Leather Equipment and Baselard/Alucart set and its as fun as ever. It could be more challenging, but that would take an entire castle full of Doppleganger/Richter level characters. Tried to Tetra Spirit-cheese the DG and he promptly misted through it. Brought a smile to my face.
My favorite SOTN playthroughs are the ones with the Luck code. But even then, you soon get quite strong for the game (even more when you get to 50 MP for Soul Steal). I'll try making the saturn version work on an emulator, to see the extra places and play as Maria. It's a pain to set up, though.

Also the extra garden isnt really worth it imo, the saturn version is overated, I like the dove wielding maria from the PSN/PSP games instead.
Has anyone used Rockman 6 editor before? Romhacking.net says it's easy to use but the text is all gibberish so I don't even know where to begin. I tried using google but nothing helpful or relevant shows up.
If you have Windows XP, you need to install the Japanese language pack so you can read it. If you can read moon. Without it, in-application text is gibberish.
If you have Windows 7, you're FUCKED unless you have the supertard omega corporate edition or some shit. Mere professional isn't good enough anymore.
Yeah I've tried it, and it seems pretty good. I use MegaFLEX myself, because i'm working on a MM5 levelhack and megaflex has fucking great support for MM5. Megaflex also support MM6, but it's VERY limited, while this editor apparently lets you do much much more.
I can't really help though, I haven't used it much. I checked it, saw that it seemed pretty alright, but sticked to megaflex since that was enough for me. You can't really ask much help with level editors though. Those kind of editors ARE the help.
I hope MM6 editing isn't as much as a bitch as MM5. MM5 uses some mandatory palette swap in some stages which are a bit of a pain to figure out when you get started. Considering MM6's complexity in graphics, it might be the same...
Hmm yeah, it seems to be the same. See those tiles at the bottom that look all fucked up? That's the 2nd set of tiles; at some point during the stage it switches, and the tiles at the bottom are now use-able, but most of those at the top aren't anymore. In MM5 in some levels, some tiles are actually available in both cases to make the transition.
IIRC Megaflex lets you decide when the transition occurs, but you have to be careful with it. So, if you can't do that with this editor, you MIGHT be able to do it in megaflex (unless it's something megaflex can do for mm5 and not for mm6 since that program has very limited mm6 support).
AFAIK that system was only used in MM5 and 6. A trick they used to allow for more and different tiles, and therefore more varied textures in the levels. One of the reasons why MM5 and 6 look so good and varied compared to the previous games.
If I can't find it, and if you're still interested, I should still have it on my old computer but I can't be arsed to hook that up now.
Make sure to get version 0.6 (last time it checked it was the last) as it's much better than the previous one. I remember only finding that version on some obscure megaman romhacking forum, if that can help...
But like I said, if it's MM6 you want, megaflex probably won't satisfy you. It has very limited support for MM6, as it can only let you :
- change the tiles in a screen
- change enemy placement
BUT - you can't add MORE enemies than there are, you have to stick to the enemies used on that screen, you can't change the type of scrolling nor the direction of the scrolling, etc etc... it's very limited. That program above lets you do more, as iirc you can choose any enemy. Not sure if it lets you change the type of direction of scrolling since MM6 is pretty complicated in that regard with its sidepaths and all...
Final Fantasy Tactics Kind Of PSP (KO for short) is a gameplay improvement mod meant to make the WotL experience more enjoyable for those who have already beaten WotL and yearn for more. Unlike other mods, KO PSP doesn’t necessarily intend to make things harder- it does that by proxy, however, because skills, jobs, and items have been rebalanced to be less overpowered and more interesting.
Instead of giving you boring blocks of text to read, here’s a run down some of the biggest features in KO PSP!
Slowdown has been removed.
Multiplayer items and battles can be accessed (in one form or another) in single player mode.
Levels scale with the player.
Skills, items, and jobs have been rebalanced while keeping their original flavor.
Luso and Balthier have repurposed skills, are no longer clones of other characters.
Many anti-frustration features have been added, such as Errands only taking 1 day to complete, and all shops having the same types of items available, so you don’t need to constantly run to certain towns to buy certain items, and Treasure Hunts are all 100% finds.
Basically, this mod was designed to be the definitive version of WotL that anybody can play and enjoy, whether they’re an amateur or a seasoned pro. Hopefully everyone will enjoy it! Note that in order for the patch to work properly, you’ll need to use a EUR ISO or else there’ll be bugs.

Those took out the Spell Charges. I could play the PSX version but I was in a mood to play the 8-bit version. And was just hoping someone would have something that would make the game a bit more playable.

It's a lost beta version of DKC; nobody knows where it came from but they say if you play it you become haunted by the spirit of Expand Dong.
In sincerety it's a hugely glitched up version of DKC, I think the Championship version since it starts you in the middle of a level. It honestly gave me the willies with the glitched music, but there's nothing actually of value from it.
While not a romhack per se because it's a PC game (though it did obviously have console versions), I found this and thought you'd might like it.

Shit, you're absolutely right. You're supposed to use the music box to get to and from World 2 but I forgot that you can use the pipe item to warp out of there. I gotta fix that.
Depending on the emulator, if you upload the save file I can probably fix it for you.
I rearranged the pipe exits to fix the problem. If you're not stuck anymore there's no point in redownloading it, though.

I've played both versions of Maria, and while I understand why you prefer the PSP version, I like the Saturn Maria because it makes the game more difficult, and her powers are great (tfw unleashing a Salamander-like blue dragon all over the screen).

It's in the "waiting to be moderated" section. You should check it out as it has some interesting hacks, but a part of them doesn't get past the moderation process (a mod has to play the hack and consider it good enough to be published on the site).
There's a ps1 version of it too if people aren't willing to play the psp version.
I've actually been dabbling in FFT romhacks again recently and thinking of potentially doing one of my own.
A personal favorite of mine is Rebirth. Changes just enough to make the game a nice challenge (no bullshit like in 1.3) but alters the balance a lot (particularly speed changes all around as well as magic getting a buff so you can actually use it at a reliable speed late game)

each level has one switch, and you'll need to find all of them(four per world) to access it.
I know it really isn't a 'rom hack', but does anyone know some decent hacks for the Playstation era Final Fantasy games.
Besides FFT, since I already know all of those, and everyone suggests 1.3 for it, which is one of the WORST hacks I've played for it.
Does anyone have suggestions for Chrono Trigger romhacks? I want to replay through it, but, I don't want something extremely difficult, but, something to require me to think a bit more would be nice.
KALE for editing levels and other stuff, YY-CHR for graphics(+virtuanes for getting correct palettes), WindHex32 for hex/text editing and finally bizhawk for PPU view(mostly for making table files for text editing).
As for removing floating, I originally wanted it to be more limited(kinda like kirby64) to give abilities more use, but since I couldn't do that, I had to remove it completely which also gives more potential for more interesting/complex levels and that everything doesn't have to be blocked or designed that players cant just use float to skip 90% of level.

This should fix problems with world-map and in that room, also it has temp fix for out-of-bounds glitch in world2(6)'s world-map, just go through door(s) and it takes you back to world 1, where you can go back to where you were before, beating any level should fix your save.
Doesn't that have new content in it? I wouldn't mind that after I do the original game, but, I was hoping for something that would follow along the game's original storyline first. I want to replay the game, I just want it to be a bit harder.

you are supposed to slide into spikes, while holding down+right on dpad, and then on right timing release both and quickly jump and hold left not to fall off, it takes few tires but its possible to pull off, webm related.

I have some pre patched roms of FF2 and FF3 for the NES, but for some reason when i boot them with nestopia or fceultra the title screens are glitchy. I've been wanting to play these games but i'm afraid i'll run into problems if i try. Could they have been possibly patched with bad roms? I'll share them if needed.

I'm >>1876539 . I completed world 1. I thought your hack was awesome. It was really hard to not depend on floating, but it was quite rewarding (Surprisingly, Kirby without floating turned out to be a solid platforming game) I'll keep playing it and trying to get to the secret levels.

The All Levels one doesn't have the cool overworld, only the bowser one does (wow, a cool new overworld and I only have access to one level) and the Luigi road one is constantly playing distorted, garbage noise instead of music and I can't get past the first level because "lets be cryptic lol"

That's not the author's fault that's the emu scene's fault. Anyway if you want it to not sound like shit and play you will unfortunately have to use ZSNES as it's the only emu that play SMW hacks correctly with custom music.

I would say this falls in the same realm as Sonic 3 Complete or Pokemon Crystal Emu Edition, so take that comment for what it's worth.
That said, since we're not putting up anything like Doom 64 EX I don't really think it quite belongs. I could see how it fits though.
Maybe don't give the player Tornado so soon, or make 'em lose it end of level, UFO style - it breaks the game a bit, basically flight with invincibility

That because your SMW ROM doesn't have a header. You can add it using a tool called stripsnes or...

Download the patch and then apply it to the clean US Super Mario World ROM with a patching tool like Lunar IPS or Floating IPS. Alternatively, you can download the pre-patched version of Dr. Mario World's vastly superior remake here:
