Megas are being phased out. Sun & Moon didn't add any new ones, and assuming USUM doesn't either, I can see it being a permanent thing in VGC.
It helps prevent every metagame being centralised around the same small number of Pokémon. Megas do tend to make metagames more offensive, though, which I think is one of the reasons VGC17 is so slow and stally.
