How are you trying to catch it?

I'm 5/5 and using a new trick I only started on my last Moltres (which I caught). Hold down the ball until the circle is small and the release it without throwing. Then wait for Zapdos to be low and centered. Wait for it to attack, and about halfway through the attack animation, curve ball it. I haven't caught one with a single catch bonus yet, I just make sure the circle is really small.

I am Mystic and those guys were Instinct (there were like 12 of them and the gym was yellow).
I Have 7/7 Lugia and 3/3 Zapdos. I've managed to capture legendaries with only 6 balls several times (one Moltres during heavy rain).
I've also seen people with 13 balls catching legendary with first or second throw so the number didn't even matter.

At the end of the day it comes down to RNG but you still want to maximize your chances. You can have every single type golden medal, 13 balls and get 13 excellent throws and it can still run away. Unlikely but it can happen (80%).

To be honest I don't usually go for excellents, I only go for greats unless it's Lugia/Machamp/Tyranitar/Snorlax. If I had 10 balls I would have a 52-53% chance of capturing a legendary (A player that only gets excellent throws would have a 63% chance). The problem for most Instinct players is that we only get 5-7 balls so we only have a 31-43% chance of capturing a legendary.

I restarted the game and tried to get back in, but the raid was already expired and I stared at a gym.

I should've waited. I SHOULD'VE FUCKING WAITED. I was so worried the game was going to error out on me that instead of a 1% chance the game was still processing the raid results, I instead completely Hanked myself. Now I'll probably never catch Lugia at this rate.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what's the smartest use of my rare candies? I'm hesitant to use them to evolve mons that I'm close to being able to evolve anyway because I could just buddy them for free. And I don't want to waste candy on something I'll hatch soon. Should I instead use them to power up my Legendaries since I don't have much Legendary candy?

I know that rare candy is plentiful now, but I don't expect to find many raid groups after the Legendaries are gone so I don't want to waste them.
