Get something when you can. Think long term because you won't finish the game anytime soon. Look at the "tier list" if you want some deco. For supports the Charizard/Slowpoke combo seems good, Snorlax if you prioritize food over training and maybe Rowlet to make upgrading your stuff a bit easier. It's really up to you.

The power up gives 50% more JP from everything and that really seems to be worth it tho, if you timed it right you could finish up level up a karp, retired it and then start another karp fresh, train it really hard and still have another 2 and half ours that are at least another 4 train sessions with +50%

training is only good at lower levels when you're getting all of your training points back through being able to consistently beat league matches and leveling up. at higher levels food is incredibly more consistent as you aren't getting your reset nearly as often.

That event is safe. If you stay you get moderate fp. If you leave you may get massive amounts of fp, but I think you have a chance to get nothing/lose fp instead

Yeah, but it's just not the same. They won't be as good as the next Karp you raise and there's something depressing about that. You can't feed them anymore, you can train them up or take them to events. They just chill in the pond doing nothing.
I sort of wish there was a breeding mechanic where you can get special patterns and stronger individual bonuses depending on what you breed with. Maybe a special Ditto magikarp easter egg, too.

Skelly pattern is supposedly common but I've never gotten it, yet I've gotten 4 shinies which are apparently super rare. What gives?

Nah. No breeding or actual ev training happens. You just train a Magikarp to it's limit, have it retire, then catch another Magikarp with a higher limit. Rinse and Repeat, and try not to be caught by a bird
