What development do you expect Mallow to go through? Probably little to nothing, Lillie is probably the only SM girl who is going to get development only because of her game storyline.

And in regards to Serena, no it's not the haircut, her entire personality goes through subtle changes and she becomes more outgoing and more headstrong in mid to late XY. It's pretty obvious by watching an early XY episode and seeing Serena being so quiet and demure and she's more lively and animated in the second/third half.

Serena was definitely not the most developed character imo, it took her so long to actually start realizing what she wanted to do and only around episode 40 could you feel she was starting to develop a little. Even the goddamn Pokémon Performances felt rushed... Serena is still one of the most developed characters of the show. There's no reason to deny she got better development than post-Kanto Misty, Iris, or the SM girls so far.

Besides, aside from Dawn's depression arc, there was nothing remarkable about the way Dawn and May's developments were handled. They developed decently, but at the end of the series they still felt like the same people.
Lillie's development has already been horribly botched. First they introduce her as a character who literally just spergs out any time a Pokemon comes within two feet of her. Then they had her get over fear of touching the egg by having her instinctively save it; fine and all, but then they repeated the exact same shit a month or two later to have her get over her fear of touching her Vulpix. And even then she still can't touch any other Pokemon, and she's now a trainer who has no real objective or goal she's aiming for. Her episodes have been dull and largely forgettable, as nobody really talks about them here anymore.

They'd need to pull off an inside straight flush to make her come anywhere close to May, Dawn, and Serena.

I just wish the girls would battle more again. It's really weird that after May or Dawn, most of the other girls barely have any battles in the anime.

Misty barely battled in the OS and most of it was just Psyduck popping out, Iris only battled in the tournaments, and Serena had like 3-4 battles which she never finished. It's also obvious in SM the 3 girls will have no real battles outside of TR blast-offs.

You don't get over a phobia in one day you faggot. Just because you kill a spider in a rush of adrenaline doesn't mean you're suddenly not afraid of spiders. It's a gradual process. First the egg, now a Pokemon, but only her Pokemon.

Serena was a trainer without a goal for 40 episodes. And they established a troubled past for Lillie to explore later, tying in any number of plot points from the games. They didn't "already botch her," you idiot, they're setting her up for future plots.

A troubled past that nobody talks about because it was literally a throwaway line in a boring episode. Her mom/brother in that photo was the only redeeming value most people found in that episode. Serena's backstory was way more interesting and fleshed out, even though I do agree they could have handled her first year on the show way better than they did.

Lillie got over her fear of touching an individual Pokemon each time, yet for seemingly arbitrary reasons, she still can't touch the others. Plus repeating Lillie getting over her fear by instinctively grabbing the mon if it's in danger is already old. If that's the best they can do, they're going to lose people quickly.

You know that Lillie fans are few and far between here, except the ones who like to spam the same 15 or 20 Ash/Lillie images over and over again and acting as if Lillie and Ash will return to Kanto together or some bullshit like that.

In literally the first two episodes, we got a clear-cut sense of what her driving purpose would be on the show, a road map of where her character might head. And now she's a trainer setting out to do...what, exactly?

That's the biggest critique of SM. No sense of direction, a lack of plot, excessive reliance on gags to define characters' personalities, and a clusterfuck of a main cast that isn't doing much of worth.

Frankly, if Lillie's goal is simply going to be "get over her fear," it's not going to be very interesting, even if all the Lusamine shit is well done.

At least it's not Lana's "dream" with the balloon, but suffice it to say that most people here aren't really getting their hopes up high for Lillie's character because once she gets over her fear, then what? With any luck, the way the fear is addressed later on will be satisfying, but ultimately it would be an underwhelming level of growth if that's what we are to expect of Lillie.

I started to like Serena around XY59-60, I was mostly indifferent to her in the first year. I do think her goal should have been handled a lot better, but I liked her development either way.

The honest truth is the girls of the anime just aren't as developed on as much as they used to. I don't know if it's just that the writers themselves don't care about focusing on them that much anymore or if the writing has gotten more lackluster, but either way we're not seeing hugely developed characters anymore, at least by Pokemon standards.
