It's hard to believe there was once a time when people thought Misty and Brock were the most developed characters in the anime. Whereas nowadays, at least now counting the SM cast so far since this series just started...they arguably turned out to be the last developed characters of the series. I'd only place them above Tracey, Max, and maaaybe Iris, but that's it.

1) Anipoke ends
2) Finals are a "win or be killed" situation, with more important things at stake than a trophy. In other words, Ash has the obligation of winning a league because his rival happens to be someone who wants revenge on him and wants him to disappear from the pokémon world.
3) The Pokémon lore expands beyond the actual Pokémon world to other planets (possible Pokéverse) instead of regions to the point actual tournaments become absolutely obsolete and useless. In other words, Ash wins a regional league, but in the end, it will amount to nothing because the tournament became obsolete and low classy.

There was nothing shitty about DP's pacing. If you look through the episode list that wasn't much regular filler and there were always important things happening. People forget DP had the most plot with two lead characters, multiple recurring rivals, recurring villains, recurring Gym leaders and Champions, and pokemon plots like Chimchar, etc.

It's only nowadays that gens are only 3 years instead of 4 like they used to be that it seems like DP was stretched out, it wasn't.

The companions were the worst Ash ever had (minus Max), the gym fights were unmemorable, Ash's team (minus based Krookodile) was complete fucking garbage and the league performance was by far the most embarrassing. So movie 20 will pretty much be a reboot movie? Nice I suppose

But after that, we'll probably get a SM movie. Ash will probably go on a field trip or some shit to the Altar of the Sunne/Moone but I would hate that cliche.

So, here's my solution: make a Team Rocket movie.

Make it a "The Castle of Cagliostro" like story, where Nanu and Looker are involved. Have Marshadow be the count and make Team Rocket, Nanu and Looker work together.

So since Ash got the stone pupper, what do you guys think Ash will get for his last three captures?

Litten seems pretty likely, not much new fire types that haven't already been claimed.

Only water type it seems Ash could possibly get at this point is Dewpider, as the others are either owned by main characters (like Popplio or Mareanie) or are impractical for his team (like Pyukumuku or Wishiwashi).

Or they might even just bring back Greninja near the end, especially if they do something with Zygarde.

As for the last one, I kinda want to see him catch an Alolan version of a Kanto Pokemon, something like Sandshrew.

Crabrawler would also work.

Why did Brock barely do any battling in the series? There were a lot of Brock pokemon like Crobat and Vulpix that did virtually nothing their entire runs. Also his Foretress and Ludicolo didn't get any screentime either. I can't recall Geodude ever being in a battle outside the P-1 Primeape episode either after the Gym match.

In fact outside of Croagunk, the rest of his pokemon barely battled in the show at all. What was up with that?

It's not so much "marketing research" as it is the fact that each movie needs to be its own thing and draw a full audience. The Rocket trio aren't the main characters people go to watch. You can get away with making individual episodes focusing on them because people aren't going to drop a TV show if they didn't care about one specific episode, but people show their interest in a movie through ticket sales, so you have to appeal broadly.

It's why there weren't any movies focused around Pokemon contests, Tripokalons and the like. Their appeal is limited compared to "the group goes on an action adventure".

Seeing as he caught Gabite and Goomy, I think Jang-mo is pretty likely, beside that Litten, and Passiman seems his style.

Team Rocket is extremely loved in Japan by Adults and late teens. Teens mostly love Dawn/Serena (the girl stuff). Kids mostly love Ash and zany wackiness from Oshawott and Samson.

I think if they made a Team Rocket movie, it would fill enoguh seats in the theaters by adults and teens. A smart marketing move would be releasing 2 movies at the same time (one for TR and the other is Ash & friends, like the Victini movie(s) at the time) but hell no they're not going to do that.

There's also the thing that a Team Rocket movie based on Lupin III might be too complex for children, which is ofcourse what the anime is targeting. Sure Team Rocket is mostly there for the adults, but they're not the main characters.

The last Pokémon is kind of tricky because really, it could be anything. I don't think he'll catch an Alola form (because lets face it, his most fitting Alola form would be Marowak) but something tells me that will belong to Kiawe at some point. I'm leaning towards either Passimian or Jangmo-o.

I'm really disappointed the girls in the anime aren't treated as lead characters anymore. That was my favorite change in the series after Misty to make the girls more important than just sidekick characters, but now they went back to that. I don't know about the rest of you, but when a girl has no real ongoing goal it's hard to get excited over what they do in the series. I mean they can be entertaining and have some good eps, but overall there's nothing to look forward to.
