I've been a VGC judge for a few years, so I can offer some insight.

They're generally pretty easy in terms of game knowledge. They don't time out or anything and everything can be found by googling. The hard part is that they're all worded in very confusing ways, and have questions like "How should you talk to a player who has been found to have cheated?" with four very similar answers.
(The VGC judge exam actually uses the same question as the TCG one because TPCI hate VGC. For some reason I have to know when new cards enter rotation, what to check card sleeves for etc.)

Depends what events you're judging. If you're judging at leagues it's probably just going to be for fun or a few extra promos. Judges at regionals and nationals get booster boxes and staff-exclusive playmats and promos (just regular promos but with an special stamp), as well as hotels paid for. Personally I find that the vs wheel gives me more than enough tickets for tournaments based on how much I play vs and tournaments so I just spend them on packs. Or you can buy card sleeves or whatever in the shop.

Depending if you want to bling and pimp and pimp out your deck with Gold Secret Rares, Full Arts, Ultra Rares, etc it could leave a hole in your pocket depending on the rarities and also depending on the cards and build/deck you want to build/run. Always Google cards for their prices by punching in their card names.

Man. I've been there, I've never built a new YGO deck in years but FUCK YGO will really leave holes in your pockets and in your wallet even trying to grab singles. Yeah, the worst card in PTCG is Shaymin and you can get one for $40-50. But again, it's an every deck kind of card. so it gets reused. VS seekers are like $25-30 for a playset, and trainer mails are a little spendy. But all of those cards are 99% likely to rotate into expanded this september anyways.

First sets in expanded were printed in 2010 and are still legal, so even though it rotates, Shaymeme will probably be a playable card there until like 2024 at least. Expanded is actually supported and played as a format too unlike YGO's old cards.

Even Legacy has at least online support, though you won't find many shops running Legacy events.

Reverse Kukui is probably worth like a pack or two at most, FA maybe 5 or so packs, maybe with a small premium because it's so close to launch and cards are almost always worth more when they're new because oldfags will dump hundreds of packs of value into the market when a new set comes out to nab up all the new stuff. the best thing in comparison to other TCGs is how the same core of cards gets re-used over and over. Buy this core for $80 or so and you can re-use it in nearly every current top tier deck with some additional investment.

You want to pick up 2 to 4 Shaymin, a 2-2 Garbodor line, and a playset each of Ultra Ball, Vs Seeker, Sycamore, N, Trainer's Mail, Max Elixirs, Float Stone, plus a few more one-of staples like Hex Maniac, Olympia, 2 Lysandre. Price all that for starters. You're pretty much set to make any deck now. just add attackers & support and whatever items are specific to that deck.

Run 4 float stones and 2-3 Tauros-GX.

Disregard other grass types, they are a burden, all you want to do with your non-owl pokemon is screen. Tauros is literally perfect for that because he can attack with just a DCE, has just enough HP to avoid being OHKO by most things and has an outrage style attack that discourages people from putting damage counters on him that don't score the KO.

Just use Tauros to stall, have lots of nest balls to fill your bench, 1-2 Rotom dex to free owls from prizes, 1-2 skyla so you can pull balls or rotomdex when needed.

I've been judging TCG for a little over a year I think. I guess I'll offer some things too.

The online test is easy as fuck bar having four answers sound the same. As you start climbing stages, you get more free response questions.

The real test lies in penalties. The number one duty of a judge is to uphold the integrity of the game, and giving someone a more severe penalty than deserved can go south quick for you and the penalized player. He-said-she-said arguments are a pain in the ass.

Ranks aren't really that important desu. A lot of PTOs I know leave their rank in VG/TCG at Basic or S1 because having S2 in anything gives them access to everything. When we look for staff, we're more concerned with amount of experience than rank.

Your best bet is to just ask around. Get in touch with organizers and network.

VG having no events is kinda expected; it just isn't as popular as TCG to go meet people in person. More VG judges are always wanted though!

Just pass your test and ask TOs in your area if you can judge their prereleases or Tier 2 events. You have a quota of 6/year and with 4 sets released a year, it isn't hard to maintain.

I've been playing N in every deck anywhere from 1 to 4 copies since the NXD era began and I can tell you Shauna pales in comparison to both N and Colress. Unfortunately the latter isn't standard, but N is still the best at its job. Those six months between BRP and FTC where all we had were Birch, Shauna and Judge were terrible for a lot of decks not named Night March.

N should be changed so that it can't be played if more than 10 prizes are still in play. The card is at its most brainless when played early when you get the same number of cards, it should be a more niche card for mounting comebacks. From my experience ace trainer is more similar to delinquent in how its played, it's good in decks that are intended to be down by prizes like raikou, while N would still have application in decks that trade even on prizes both as a mid-game shuffler or lategame comeback play.

It just shouldn't be an early game shuffle draw supporter in addition to those things, it just makes the card too powerful. At least Sycamore forces you to discard to have that much draw power, and there's not a good way to get item cards back into your deck once they're discarded without LTC.

Lurantis and Decidueye are good to build decks around. Umbreon and Espeon are both good cards to run in decks that run dark or psychic energy because of how easy it is to get them in play with energy evolution. Tauros is splashable in almost anything but works really well in big basics decks with ninja boys. Gumshoos is good in disruption decks. Incineroar can do a sky field strat but it's probably not going to see much play until the better sky field abusers rotate out of the meta.

Everything else is basically memecore, there are some funny cards like Golduck and some new situationally useful trainers like kukui, nest ball and team skull grunts.

Mega Mewtwo gets 60 extra damage when a Double Colorless is attached to it, not 30, because the attack specifies "the amount of energy", not "the amount of energy cards".
Electrode works in the same way, it's one card that provides two energy.

Any time there's a card that removes energy, such as team flare grunt, it will specifically say "discard an energy CARD", in which case you would discard the entire card, which may provide multiple energy.

Are you playing Theme?

I haven't played Theme since it used the XY Basic: Green/Blue/Yellow/Red decks, but with those it was basically the case that the first person to get out their big hitter was the one who'd win, so the other person would scoop most of the time. Given how poorly Theme decks are constructed, you would probably take at most 1 KO before this stage was reached, making KO challenges take forever.

Just got a second rainbow Espeon GX from buying an online code. This is the deck I've built after playing TCGO for a few months now and I'm still trying to experiment with it but it's actually been very good, 225 wins out of 379 matches. What should I trade Espeon GX for that could refine this deck even more? I was thinking of adding in the Primarina (GX) line for discarding energies, but I don't know if another 2 stage line could work.

Well Shaymin, Octillery and Manaphy have obvious purposes, though Shaymin's really just backup since Octillery generally comes out first with dive balls and Barbaracle's always on the bench only prone to Lysandre, but with other strong mons on the bench those often get prioritized over Barbaracle. This is your problem, your deck doesn't have a focus. It's just a mix of water Pokemon with no synergy. Pick an attacker like M Gyarados or Regice and build the deck around that Pokemon specifically.

Have you never looked at a decklist? Every deck should be running 4 Ultra Ball, 4 VS Seeker, 3-4 Sycamore and 2-3 N.

The deck is pretty bad. Winning/losing isn't necessarily the best measure of deckbuilding because of the wide variation in individual player skill and sheer luck of the draw you can experience. Especially when it comes to in game events where you get matched with whoever's around at the moment.

You have three classic errors

1. Thin pokemon lines. 1-1 and especially 1-1-1 lines are incredibly unreliable, the chance of something necessary being prized is really significant and the chance that you get things on the field is extremely low. If you don't depend on these lines and are okay with not being able to get them most of the time, chances are they don't contribute to your deck enough to justify including them.

2. Too much noise. You have too many different supporters and attackers. In SOME decks (ex. vileplume toolbox variants) this works okay. But in this deck there is just no point in having so many different cards. Cull the less useful cards and increase the more useful ones. You shouldn't be running 9 different lines unless you're doing toolbox.

3. Too much energy. Tauros attacks with 1 DCE, Gyarados with 4 energy (and you have no tools to accelerate water energy on him quickly to take advantage of the water energy boost he gets), Regice needs 1 water 1 DCE. You have fucking eighteen energy cards. The average deck has 10 or less these days. It's better to have less energy and more cards to draw with.

Then you have a few other errors. No ultra balls means you can't get Shaymin reliably which slows down your draw. No Sycamore/N also massively slows down your draw.

Sycamore gives you a 0% chance of drawing the same hand you wanted to get rid of. N is a multi-use card, early game you use it to shuffle your hand, late in the game you use it to disrupt your opponent's hand.

most decks run 4 Sycamore 2 N. 4 VS Seekers are also pretty much mandatory in most lists since they let you recover these strong draw power supporters.

Expect a game that is highly draw/shuffle focused (the two best supporters are discard hand and draw 7, and shuffle hand and draw 6), very fast paced when you're playing with big boy decks (themedecks are slow as fuck though). Right now the only really expensive card is Shaymin, they're about $40-50 each and a typical competitive deck uses two of them. But they're more than half of the budget of a typical deck and will be reused in every deck, and will be used in expanded for years to come so just having them cuts the cost of building a new deck in half.

The game will probably slow down a bit during the next rotation, but it'll also be way cheaper to build decks since Shaymin is getting kicked into expanded.

I've been slaying volcanion decks all day with it, it's hilarious. Also has surprisingly good matchup against Mewtwo since I never have more than one energy. With a Kukui it can 2HKO literally anything and I have it online 2nd turn ~85% of the time, 3rd turn 95% of the time. Considering mixing in more Lysandre so I can chase for 2HKOs better though.

I'm looking for a better secondary support than Manaphy though, the card feels kind of useless because Golduck has 0 retreat anyways, it's only good if I'm forced to start Staryu or Shaymin, and even if that happens I'd be better off trading it for an escape rope and using one of my Skylas to find it.

A deck isn't broken just because it has representation, even if it is representation on the level Zoo has. Even within the formats that the deck has existed in, Zoodiac itself wasn't even the most broken thing in them, and the things the deck does are a lot lower in power than the things we've put up with in previous formats of even just the Arc-V era. SM1 has the altars for Psychic/Dark and Fire/Metal, and a field card for Grass/Lightning was spoiled with Lycanroc and Tapu Bulu, that leaves Fairy, Dragon, Water, and Fighting for duel-type stadiums. I'd say a fightan' stadium is very likely.

I feel that this could be used similarly to the way Ace Trainer is currently. If you build a deck that sets up using a GX move (and so can reasonably expect to be drawing 7 early on), this could be a decent card.

The problem is that a lot of GX moves so far seem to be mid-late game guaranteed OHKOs or disruption. Given that this card would be worse than Shauna early in the match, I don't see a huge amount of decks running it.

Decidueye = 12-15 packs
Lurantis = 8-10 packs
Umbreon = 5-8 packs
Everything else = 3-5 packs

FA cards aren't much more valuable because hypers rares exist and blingfags will only want those anyways. i wouldn't expect to get more than 6-7 full value packs for a FA Espeon.

idk, drampa seems like a pretty fucking good opener especially if you're moving second, first turn drampa plus one energy, play your hand, use whatever draw cards you need then use his GX, if you run 4 Hala chances are fairly good you get one or a card that can get you one like a trainer mail (being rotated though i guess) in the shuffle.

Drampa's also a really good card in and of itself, and if you have a way to get a damage counter on your bench he can do 150 for 3 colorless. Hits 180 against EX with a choice band which is perfect range against everything except megas.

Only issue is like all attack based draws, it's vulnerable to N. Another attack that could have some synergy is Sol Burst, since it's a fast way to attach a lot of steel energy, with 1 energy on your first solgaleo you can attach 2 more to it, then 3 to a cosmog/cosmoem/solgaleo on the bench, ultra road it in the next turn and fire off two sunsteel strikes in three turns. I feel solagaleo is a retardedly good card that just lacks that one good supporter. If Bronzong PHF was still standard he'd be meta defining.

Yeah, this is why I don't like Drampa's GX attack. As long as N is in the format, with 2-3 per deck, I feel like Drampa GX is a poor card.

Compare it to Sylveon GX for example. For a single energy, Sylveon lets you search for 3 cards you need (rather than just hoping to get good stuff from Drampa) and won't cost you your only GX attack of the game in case of an N.

Also, I was talking more about synergy with Hala, rather than how good Drampa's GX attack is in and of itself. Surely the point of using your GX attack to draw cards is to remove the burden of drawing from your Supporters and free up greater utility? Maybe I'm wrong though and Drampa will just replace Shaymin as a way to dig like mad.

I think you might need to go back to the drawing board with this one sadly. The Max Potions are a good idea though; Solgaleo's 250HP is monstrous and so very few things will OHKO. Given that you're already discarding energy, it looks like a good combination.

Scizor is there so this deck doesn't auto-lose against non-EX decks because there is no way you can chain 6 sunsteel strikes together without Bronzong PHF for energy support, it needs too much energy acceleration so you just end up nabbing 3-4 KOs then get worn down by 2HKOs from things like Raikou or rainbow road Xerneas.

Kukui is so Scizor can hit 130 when he needs to for OHKOs but it's a little sketch. Solgaleo's Sol Burst lets me set up either two Sunsteel Strikes (2 to the one who uses it, 3 to a cosmog/cosmoem/solgaleo on bench) or lets me set up two Scizors so I can rotate between them depending on what deck I'm against. Scizor is *kind of* dead weight against EX decks but also decent for just switching around and sponging.

Solgaleo gets rid of the need for switching cards with his ability unless Garby comes out, I might work a hex maniac in over one or both Kukuis.

I was thinking about this too for Greninja. Again, I think you can get by with just 1 Kukui. You already OHKO Xerneas and you have no chance of OHKOing a Raikou (even if it lacks a belt).

Just faced some idiot with a Darkrai/Eeveelutions/Zoroark/Tauros deck. I was playing Volcanion and bricking badly. Managed to take 1 KO after several turns and picked up a prized Sycamore.

I managed to stream attacks using Float Stone and a mix of Olympia & Switch and got down to a single prize. He sent out a Tauros GX and waited for to do every single stage of my final turn (retreat, VS Seeker for Olympia and Steam Up twice) and then quit before I could attack. He knew I had the energy in hand as I'd brought it back the previous turn.

If you're going to concede, just concede. Don't passive-aggressively hang around till the last click of the game and then decide to take the 'you can't fire me, I quit!' approach. It's a waste of time for everyone.

I think Mantislock is actually the death of Greninja as a viable deck archetype.

Like Greninja actually can't do fucking anything to a Lurantis deck after item lock goes down. No balloons, no dive balls, nothing. If you get a turn 1 item lock on that deck it's already pretty fucking dire for Greninja, but that on top of something that OHKOs everything in the deck except Talonflame, takes 2-3 turns tops to set up and heals itself for 30 every turn putting it outside of 2HKO range is just a disaster.

The matchup is just that fucking awful. I can't see how you win it as a Greninja player outside of getting extremely lucky on your draws and/or them getting extremely unlucky on theirs.
