New? Check the pastebin for advice on starting the game, client information, a guide on the various theme decks/products you can redeem in-game and more.

How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games) to get 45 free packs
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.
>if you don't know what deck you want to build yet, see http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/forum/tcg-competitive-play.156/ or check out tournament results for a list of viable decks http://www.pokemon.com/us/play-pokemon/state-province-championships-2016/decks/week-four/
>more frequently updated decklists w/tournament results can be found at http://thecharizardlounge.com

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. Top Cut & other big trading companies will typically overprice cards, expect to get lower. Keep pack value in mind when trading.

First for the shaymeme rotation
>>
>>31689276
Potential Shaymin replacements

1. Octillery, if BKT isn't rotated Octillery could replace Shaymin in most decks, though it is significantly more card intensive. Can be searched with level and dive balls which make those cards a little better. Comes out slower which makes it vulnerable to Garby if we don't get any good tool removal in the SM sets.

2. Oranguru, single stage but only draws to 3

3. Drampa-GX, has a draw 10 but it's a move so they can N you the next turn. Talonflame, Lapras GX and Sylveon GX also have draw/search moves but move based search always has to fear N retaliation unless we get a counter to hand disruption
>>
>>31689336

I doubt BREAKthrough will be rotated, it's the closest thing to a "base" set that's not Sun & Moon.
>>
Pokemon GX tiers

Really good

Decidueye
Lurantis
Tauros

Solid

Gumshoos
Umbreon
Espeon
Sylveon
Snorlax
Drampa

Could be good after rotation, outclassed or have too many bad matchups before that

Incineroar
Solgaleo
Lunala
Toxapex

Kind of shit

Lycanrock
Lapras
Primarina
Bewear
Vikavolt
>>
>>31689417
Is this accurate?
My booster box had three Tauros, a Solgaleo and a Decidueye, which feels like pretty shit rates compared to previous booster boxes, but if those are likely to be popular, that helps.

So now that no new EX cards are going to be produced, what is your opinion on the existing ones? Were they a good or a bad addition? DId you like them more than Lv. X?i
>>
>>31689465
Decidueye is the most valuable GX atm, very good in many decks for his +20

Tauros is useful tech for big basics/EX decks.
>>
>>31689565
I guess they were bad in that they made the majority of decks every year be all basics, since they were basically just ex/Lv.X cards except without evolution.
At least Megas kind of changed that.

Also, where the fuck is my M-Abomasnow EX?
>>
>>31689593
Yeah, I'm using the Tauros I got on TCGO for surprise Ninja Boy KOs right now, it seems like it can fit into basically any deck.
>>
>>31689593
>>31689565
I agree, why would you want to use an evolution line where it often depends on luck or trainers to get the stage 1 or 2 when you can have a fucking powerful BASIC Pokemon. Even though there are currently no GX cards with Pokemon that I personally like out right now, I really love that GX require actual evolution.
>>
>>31689656
meant for >>31689601
>>
>>31689656
Stage 1 GX pokemon exist and a lot of them are really good damage wise.

Drampa for example hits 150 damage for 3 energy if he has something on his bench with damage. It'll be great for rainbow energy decks.
>>
>>31689731
and by stage 1 I mean basic ofc.
>>

>>
>>31690557
depends on what decks you're playing
>>
>>31690627

Probably only 1 decent (i.e. non-Evolutions) pack.
>>
>>31690654
So I should probably take the offer that's up for a steam siege then?
>>
>>31690669

You might be able to get a slightly more valuable pack (such as Sun/Moon) if you list up your own trade. Maybe even two cheaper packs.

I'm just going by the fact that I offered a BREAKpoint pack for a FA Ranger the other day and it got snapped up pretty quickly.
>>
Does anyone recommend buying booster box codes from ebay or something?
>>
Gold secret rare cards from now on are going to be a meme because these are just going to be mass-produced unlike the older packs
>>
>>31690557
Yes just post link here when you are streaming and I'll give it a go. Lately been just doing shit ton trading so I'll gladly watch some streams while doing that.
>>
>>31691173
Yes, I bought codes from eBay a lot, but make sure the seller you're buying from is a good one
>>
>>31691173

It's kind of a shortcut. You can amass lots of packs for no money if you're willing to put the time into trading, but to save time you can just buy booster codes.

If you do, bear in mind that packs are currency and you're probably better off just using the unopened packs for trades, instead of opening them and trading the cards you get.

As for GX, not sure how I feel about their look.
>>
So would buying the codes and then trading those packs for ex cards or gx cards the best route most likely?
>>
>>31691439
Hyper rares are pretty damn cash though
>>
Anyone know a cheaper way to get energy cards besides elite boxes?
>>
>>31691691
EX and GX don't mean shit, trade for cards you want to build a deck with. Shaymins go for ~20-25 SM packs though I'm sure prices will rise over time. Every non-meme deck that isn't Greninja wants at least 2 of those.

4 vs seeker are also mandatory and cost about 2 shit packs or 1 good pack (ie ROS, SM, PLF) each

4 ultra balls, 2 lysandre, 2 N are very common but you will have all of those by the time you finish your trainer challenges and get your themedecks unlocked.

Past that, most EX and competitively viable non-EX attackers (ie raikou, yveltal, xerneas) are worth about 1-3 packs each, some promos or high demand cards like Salamence-EX, Jolteon-EX or Hoopa-EX can cost more.

All in all you should be able to build a complete competitive deck from scratch for about 70-80 packs of value. Since so much of the deck's value is in staple cards like Shaymin, the cost of building each additional deck plummets. When I want to build a deck now I spend less than 10 packs of value in most cases.
>>
>>31689276
When is the rotation?
>>
>>31691944
September 1st

>>31689336
Just play 4 Sycamore 4 N and cut out all of the extraneous 1-of supporters

Also Dive Ball will rotate too.

>>31689353
Assume everything is the on chopping block.
>>
>>31691439
Was this card good when it first came out or something?
>>
>>31691944
September. Pretty high chance that Breakpoint and up remain legal, at least that's what most people think. I think that leaves a huge chunk of the current standard meta intact, it'll remove several supporters but many popular decks come out mostly unscathed, particularly Greninja BREAK.

I think if they release another set that has more staple trainer reprints they might make Generations the cutoff, but in doing that they lose BREAK cards which generally fit with the philosophy you see in SM and the GX cards, which is generally a move away from big basics and EX, providing incentives to play stage 2 cards again.

>Greninja BREAK
>no Dive Ball
>no Silent Lab
>intact
>>
>>31692060
It's a Double Crisis card, it was released about two years ago so it's not exactly old. In fact it's still standard legal.

There are a lot of bad EX cards, some of which look nice.
>>
>>31692089
I expect dive ball to get a reprint in SM, silent lab IDK. Even without dive balls, timer balls aren't a horrible replacement if you consider how much big EX decks lose with hoopa and shaymin disappearing.
>>
>>31692016
>Assume everything is on the chopping block.

That's just plain retarded thinking, Anon. We're not moving on to SM-on this September.
>>
>>31692064
Here's what we're losing if the rotation is BRT-on:

>Primal Clash
Wailord-EX
Bunnelby
Archie’s Ace in the Hole
Maxie’s Hidden Ball Trick
Professor Birch’s Observations
Teammates
Dive Ball
Rough Seas
Scorched Earth
Silent Lab

>Double Crisis
Team Magma’s Camerupt
Team Magma’s Hidden Base

>Roaring Skies
M Rayquaza-EX (Emerald Break)
Rayquaza-EX
Shaymin-EX
Mega Turbo
VS Seeker
Rayquaza Spirit Link
Double Dragon Energy

>Ancient Origins
Vespiquen (10/98)
Gyarados (21/98)
Regice
Unown
Giratina-EX
Lugia-EX
Vileplume
Forest of Giant Plants
Faded Town
Ace Trainer
Hex Maniac
Lucky Helmet
Lysandre
Trainers’ Mail

So right away the meta will lose
>Giratina decks
>Gyarados
>Vespiquen decks
>M Fug
>Vileplume decks

As >>31692089 said, the loss of Dive Ball and Silent Lab dooms Greninja. They could still tech in a 2-2 line-up of Alolan Muk but it seems inconsistent. Mega Turbo being gone means M Mewtwo, M Scizor and M Gardevoir will slow down a lot while Big Basic decks can still abuse Max Elixir. FoGP means Grass deck like Lurantis and Decidueye will fade to obscurity.

Which leaves behind Big Basic decks like Volcanion, Yveltal and Darkrai to dominate the format.

>>31692137
No reason to assume that. And Timer Ball is not a good replacement.

>>31692142
I guess by everything I mean it's safe to assume BRT and even BRP could get the axe as well. I'm not counting on it but I would at least consider it because there are a lot of important cards in both.
>>
>>31692195
Also I intentionally left out Hoopa-EX because of the Powers Beyond tin promo - we won't know if that rotates until we see an exact rotation list.
>>
>>31691747
Rainbow.
>>
>>31692137
Wait, when do Shaymin and Hoopa rotate?
>>
>>31692276
Shaymin EX rotates in September 1.
Hoopa EX might rotate then as well. Not positive yet.
>>
>>31692279
Hmm, I better enjoy M Rayquaza when I can then, Oranguru and Octillery may be a fix for when it happens.
>>
>>31692456
If Shaymin EX, out of the set Roaring Skies, is rotating, what else do you figure is rotating? Perhaps also in Roaring Skies?
>>
>>31691747
really? I think they are hideous.
>>
>>31692565
they look better than the FA cards, I think the FA GX are horribly ugly.
>>
>>31692476
M Rayquaza was "reprinted" in a later pack, forgot the name of it but it's the Shiny version with the MAX ancient trait.
>>
>>31692666
Guess what pack is also rotating.
>>
>>31692666

That's in Ancient Origins, which will probably be rotated along with Roaring Skies since that's only one set after it
>>
Bought a few codes and got Lunala GX and Tauros GX. I don't really have a psychic deck so I'm considering trading Lunala away for more packs, or should I keep it?

>>
>>31693330
this is true of all item lock decks
>>
>>31693374
yeah, but item lock with extremely low damage is just extra punishment. Like, you know the ONLY hope you have is drawing that one ace trainer you splashed into the deck and OHKOing the turn you use it.

Earlier I had a battle where someone ace trainered my Mew hoping to score his last two prizes, did 120 damage to it but I had a FFB on him and used Sky Return the next turn to scoop him, switched to the secondary Mew I had on bench and continued on spamming flash ray as if nothing happened.

It's also really satisfying watching their hand grow, you just know they have an ultra ball they want to use to get a shaymin, or a vs seeker to pull that sycamore out of discard. Too bad though, Vileplume hates fun :^)

What's a fun and competitive deck to play? I currently got Yveltal and M Fug, I was looking into making an M Lucario one but the meta seems too Psychic centric as to make it work.
>>
>>31695142
Also, a Legacy deck would be nice, are LEGENDS any good?, I have a Plasma Kyurem one but it bores me out sometimes
>>
>>31695142

M Lucario-EX is terrible, not to mention that it's only legal in Expanded.
>>
>>31695154

Certain ones are, Rayquaza & Deoxys LEGEND is essentially a Plasma Lugia-EX that's not blocked by Garbodor and Lugia-EX sees use in some Ho-Oh-EX DRX decks.
>>
>>31695158
Thanks, of M Lucario I liked that it was putting pressure from turn one with the 1 energy attacks boosted by band, stadium and/or special energy, honestly, it seems more reliable than what I currently have for Expanded.
>>
>>31695176
>M Lucario
>1 energy attacks boosted by band, stadium and/or special energy

You're thinking of regular Lucario-EX, not the Mega. M Lucario-EX only has one attack and it's requirements are 3 Fighting Energy.

And while it was used for some time, Night March killed it the minute it came out.
>>
>>31695211
Huh, you are right, I haven't seen it in a long time, I thought it was good at the time.
>>
>>31695211

>>
>>31695216

It was, but Night March would hit it for weakness most of the time. The only thing keeping it relevant were Golbat and Crobat, but of which could help put a dent in Night March at the time.
>>
>>31695226

Night March started to get good after Hypnotoxic Laser was rotated out, it was still run despite that due to it potentially helping you in the long run.
>>
>>31695211
>>31695216
Mega Lucario would at least be a little bit more playable if it actually had a Spirit Link. But since it's one of those pre-Phantom Forces Megas, it doesn't have one, which severely hampers it.

A-at least the card itself looks kinda cool.

The trophy will be lit up if you defeat every trainer in a tournament using only that deck.
For example, I've defeated the entire Gold League using Bright Tide, but not Bolt Twister.
When a deck is selected there should also be a tick next to every trainer whom you have defeated using that deck.

>>
>>31695510

tier 1 meta decks:

Yveltal-EX variants (took over half of all placements at the European international)
Volcanion-EX
Greninja BREAK
M-Gardevoir (chiefly STS focused but most decks include at least 1 PRC)
M-Mewtwo Y
Darkrai-EX variants (either Darkrai turbo or Darkrai/Dragons)

tier 2 meta decks

Vespiquen
Rainbow Road
M-Rayquaza
Toolbox decks (usually Vileplume but sometimes you see something like Jolteon/Garb)

tier 3 decks

Raikou/Electrode
Gyarados
Carbink/Zygarde-EX
M-Scizor
Xerneas BREAK variants (dragons or Snorlax GX)

This is mostly looking at % of placements received at the PRC-EVO meta. idk when the event is but if SM cards are legal by the time it rolls around, you should mostly be concerned about Umbreon-GX, Tauros-GX, Lurantis-GX and Decidueye-GX.

You're welcome. To my knowledge you don't get anything extra for getting the trophy, but you do get a card pack for every trainer (once) after earning 4 stars.
I think the trophy is just there for something to work towards if you don't want to play against other people, but that's just my speculation. I haven't completed all the leagues with a single deck because you only need to beat (any) 12 trainers to unlock (what I believe to be) the one booster pack you can earn from each deck.
>>
>>31697601
After re-reading my post, I noticed that
>but you do get a card pack for every trainer (once) after earning 4 stars.
is a little ambiguous.
You can only earn the booster pack from each trainer once overall, but not once per deck.
>>
>>31697633
You also get a pack for getting 12 victories with a new theme deck even if you've gotten your 45 from challenge.

>>
>>31697870
She's used in some decks where getting a certain trainer card can be crucial (i.e. Typhlosion), but for the most part spending your supporter on a single trainer card is just so inefficient compared to a sycamore or N, and it isn't a potential gamechanger like a well timed Delinquent or Lysandre.

She has niches, but most decks just don't care about a guaranteed trainer card when they pull 40 cards turn one.
>>
>>31697870
Skyla is used in some decks that are extremely dependent on one particular item or stadium card. Some Greninja BREAK or sky field decks will run her. But in most decks it's trading a supporter for a trainer, and you can't use a supporter the same turn so if you skyla > sycamore or skyla > N for example you're highly vulnerable to being counter N'd.

Trainer mail is typically preferred over Skyla because it's an item card so if you trainer mail for a supporter you can use it the same turn. The standard trainer section of most decks is 4 ultra balls/3 or 4 trainer mail/4 vs seeker/4 sycamore/2 N/2 lysandre

>>
>>31697988
STS = Steam Siege
PRC = Primal Clash

There are two kinds of Gardevoir-EX/Mega Gardevoir-EX, the PRC one is the one with the darkrai style fairy type attack for 3 energy, the STS one is the dual typed fairy/psychic one with the 2 energy attack that does 110+10 for every pokemon you choose to discard from your bench.

STS comes online faster and has better matchups (absolutely wrecks Mewtwo, for example) while the PRC one hits higher damage numbers in the lategame, they actually compliment one another fairly well considering most garde decks include the fairy stadium that lets them retreat for free.

Strong, but not way too strong so it becomes an overplayed card. And attacks/ability which makes it play like no cards usually do.

n into dead draw n into dead draw n into dead draw

i kept drawing the same fucking hand but with like 1 less card. I almost managed to win but I got put so far behind by having to sack two EX to stall that I couldn't recover. He had both Espeon GX and EX and I was using Mew, I had to resistance blizzard his EX then he attached a DCE to his GX, switched it in and KO'd.

The fact that it was a psychic attacker deck and I couldn't get my rainbow energy until I had 12 cards left in my deck just killed me. I also couldn't get Vileplume out for item lock until like turn 5 which is way later than normal.

I don't play the game in real life, but I do like opening packs of cards and looking at shiny things. Do you think buying a box and selling the good rares I get online is a worthwhile investment or am I more likely to just waste my time and money?
>>
>>31701624
Depends on if you sell well/smart.

One secret rare could be able to pay for two boxes but SuMo SR's are stupidly rare, and shit ton of em, like 30 or so.

It's a hit or miss market Anon, good luck.
>>
>>31701624
Buying sealed product is NEVER financially worthwhile unless you can sell every single card you open. You have to know where to get boxes as cheap as you can, have an "out" like a TCGPlayer storefront or eBay account and keep your prices updated regularly. Its really only worth it if you can get vendor prices for bulk boxes.

Now, if you just have disposable income go get a box or two and have fun realizing that you have a small chance to actually pull enough to pay for the box.
>>
>>31701423
I think there's a fine line between trash and usable in this game. I wouldn't sacrifice usability for uniqueness. When 90% at minimum of any given set is trash, some of which is unique, I'd leave it to PCL to create garbage. If we're going to take the time to theorize a card, let's try to make it as good as possible without being ridiculous.

That said, I think you're right here. Captivating Glare is too good for a Stage 1 non-GX; I would leave the switched target up to the opponent. But the ability to keep it from retreating during the opponent's next turn should stay.

The attack is fine, but if it was too good you could switch the energy back to PPC or lower the damage to 90.

The idea behind the card is to use its ability to pull up any Pokemon, force it there for one turn, so the attack will do damage, then the burn will do an addition 30. If they stay burned by the end of the next turn, that's an additional 30. That's some solid synergy and I think it's a great way to promote the new Burn effect, it showcases Corrosion (sort of), and it's interesting to have a Psychic ("Poison") Pokemon inflicting Burn.

>Aren't there already pokemon which run your suggestions on the ability/attack and how come it's "not usable" with my mockup?
Hawlucha from Steam Siege and Genesect-EX from Plasma Blast had switching abilities and saw use. The "locked in the Active" portion of the ability hasn't seen much use because, by itself, it's not a particularly useful thing to do. The extra Burn damage between turns hasn't been done before, I don't think. At least not with the new errata.

I thought of that ability with the pokemon's personality/nature in mind. A fire/phsycic type which mainly attracts other pokemon into traps. But I can understand why the retreat negation would make it be looked down upon and not played one bit, but Switch kind of counters and most likely other trainers/abilities.

>The attack is fine, but if it was too good you could switch the energy back to PPC or lower the damage to 90.
I'd rather it be 80 because as you said it'd be a bit too strong for a stage 1 which isn't a GX.
90 plus Fighting Fury Belt. plus the burn, that's one hard hit for a stage 1.

90 plus burn doesn't sound bad one bit, it's more or less a base of 120 which is reasonable for a stage one but with it's ability, resistance and HP it feels like it'd be very very mainstream with cards like FFB.

VS seeker rotates with Shaymin anyways, the cost of deckbuilding should plummet this summer.

>>31703561
How much do meta decks in YGO/MTG cost these days? You can have any pokemon meta deck for $160 or less, some of the cheaper decks don't even cost $100.
>>
>>31703586
Trainers' Mail also rotates, meaning the only expensive ($20+ for playset) generic Trainers (so far) are Elixir and FFB. I expect Choice Band to be $4-$5 a piece as well. But besides that building a Standard deck will be a fraction of its current cost.

Don't forget to pick up Octillery, by the way.

No, well then FUCK OFF!
>>
>>31703623
This is a look at the next Tier 0 Yugioh deck. Mind you they are prerelease prices as the set officially drops Friday but I wouldn't expect a dramatic difference.

Also Pot of Desires is the current Shaymin of Yugioh (sort of) and it's been consistent $70+ since it was released in August.
>>
>>31703620
and if it's reprinted prices should plummet so unless you're blingfagging you can get them cheap again, especially if there's a SR version as TPCI seems wont to do these days.

Some of those prices are pretty gaugy, no way anyone's actually paying $18 for Tiger or $15 for Thorough. But yes, YGO decks get extremely pricey due to the frequent necessity of cards needed in 2s and 3s that only come in secret rare, as well has extra deck cards, staples, side deck cards, and meta dependent techs with no reprints all with varying degrees of difficulty to obtain. You're generally looking at at least $300-400
>>
>>31703764
And the best part about YGO is at any time, unnoticed, Konami can come in and render your deck worthless through a new F/L list, throwing your $400 deck into the garbage.

I spent $160 on a playset of FA Shaymin-EX back when ROS dropped and I've used at least one of them in every deck I've built since.

It really is awful. I only still play because Madolche is still decent enough to get wins, Tiaramisu is still one of the best cards ever printed, and it pisses the hell out of people. The actual game aside, I get more and more pissed off with the management of the game in the west as the days go by

Though I'm not sure if I'll ever break into playing this physically, WS is the game I'm invested in moving to full time when YGO becomes too unbearable
>>
>>31703857
I'd probably try to use it with Lurantis GX, LLC is kind of a lot of energy for a card like that, Lurantis can at least get the energy set up.

You'll probably use Lurantis 2x as much as the stupid meganium though lmao. Typhlosion is the fun G/S starter. Apparently someone took a top 36 placement at a regional with a Typhlosion deck.

I'm building a Xerneas-Gardevoir deck. I'm using a 3-3 line for Gardevoir (2 Brilliant Arrow and 1 Despair Ray).

My question is, why most people are using the Despair Ray variant? In my opinion is less consistent (even with Dragonite EX) because of Pararell City and because it does less damage and its only really good matchup is M-Mewtwo, but that's my point of view. I would like to see what are your opinions about that.
>>
>>31704141

That's pretty much it, the main reason why you see more Dispair Ray over Brilliant Arrow is because the latter lost Aromatisse XY to rotation.
>>
>>31689235

The sheer amount of secret rares this set and the low pull rates for them is giant cash grab. Might skip this set as a collector until prices go way down.
>>
>>31704141

I've played the version you're building for over 1000 games. It's far too slow to compete against many decks, even in it's fastest form. I've personally always thought that it was a great deck, however, capable of being BDIF given a particular meta. But that doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. Despair Ray Garde is much more versatile and is up faster. You'll likely find that, in the deck you're building, going aggressive with SS Garde is the winning play. And while the other Garde is certainly better after turn ~3 or 4, Pokemon is a very momentum driven game. Being better now is often more important than being better later.
>>
>>31704248
Weren't trading cards as a concept a cash grab to begin with?

Or do you prefer every set only have one secret rare and that secret rare is fucking Gyarados EX?
>>
>>31704353
So you recommend me to use the Despair Ray Gardevoir in the first 3-4 turns meanwhile I charge the other 1-2 M-Garde and then start hitting like a truck?

I've seen many games with each Garde and I find the BA more consistent thanks to things like Mega Turbo, Exp. Share, Max. Elixir, Dragonite EX, Xerneas and Aromatisse (the format in my locals is Expanded), meanwhile the DR Garde suffers after a few turns and deals so little damage to kill things like Volcanion, Yveltal or even Greninja.

Oh, and thanks for the help.

That's the deck's biggest flaw. It has a superb endgame but getting there isn't always guaranteed.

>My question is, why most people are using the Despair Ray variant? In my opinion is less consistent (even with Dragonite EX) because of Pararell City

Despair Ray Gard can consistently 2HKO and has prize denial. It can clear its bench of weakened Gardevoirs (if you do not OHKO them) and also of Lysandre bait such as Hoopa & Shaymin. With 210HP, not a lot of stuff can OHKO Gard, so you're trading 2HKOs with a deck that can deny 2HKOs.

PARALLEL City is largely irrelevant. 150-160 (if playing Fairy Garden) is not an important range to hit. 150-190 is somewhat more useful, but pretty much the only things you now OHKO are basic EXs and these will likely have a Fighting Fury Belt on (in which case you 2HKO regardless).
>>
>>31705964

>3x volcEX

I just switched back to Volcanion after not using it for a while and run 4 Volcanion-EX to make sure I hit the big numbers. Is 3 the normal number played now?

>2-3x Flareon EX

Why? I always though that even as a x1 Flareon-EX was a bad inclusion. Why do people run multiples of it?
>>
>>31707275

flareon's a mid/lategame bootyblasterthat can left field the fuck out of people, it's not uncommon to casually build 5-6 energies onto her by pure collateral over the course of a game.

i've been testing her ingame to great surprise, she's basically your personal Mega Y-Mewtwo in the event you aren't able to set up a clean cornholing with floaty volca-EX rotations

> Is 3 the normal number played now?

you rarely need more than 2, almost never need 3 and holy lmao what r u doin with life if you have 4 of them on the damn bench

you CAN run 4, but lists that roll shaymin for early badonking tend to cut down to 3 just to ensure a more probable start of having a different basic out in the field. it's mega badnews if volca-EX is your only basic, even more mega badnews if you have multiples of them early on with nothing to gas them up

the best card in the deck is low-key regular ass Volcanion, all of the discard outlets are basically built around him existing on the field at some point in the game (preferably very early on)
>>
>>31707349

>you rarely need more than 2, almost never need 3 and holy lmao what r u doin with life if you have 4 of them on the damn bench

So you have never ever had a Volcanion-EX prized? You need 3 EXs on the bench to ensures you hit the magic numbers to OHKO Megas and Belted EXs. Playing with 3 when you need 3 is risky.

>it's mega badnews if volca-EX is your only basic

Yeah, if you play no switching cards. Always having the ability to switch out is one of the cornerstones of Volcanion. An EX start is bad, but not disastrous.

> Volcanion.........built around him existing on the field at some point in the game (preferably very early on)

I know. I have played Volcanion a lot.

>flareon's a mid/lategame bootyblaster

If you get to mid/late game and you can't win with Volcanions, you messed up m8. Flareon is redundant. Also:

>it's mega badnews if volca-EX is your only basic

was you argument against running 4 Volc-EXs, but you want to add 3 Flareons???
>>
>>31707469

>You need 3 EXs on the bench

This was a typo. I meant 3 on the field. One can be active.

Though playing 4 and getting them all out does allow baby Volc to OHKO Megas and Belted EXs.

You start out just playing mostly premade Theme Decks anyway which are literally designed to be played by children, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. Once you get a good idea of how to play a few different decks go back to looking at some constructed decklists, read all the cards (this is the important part), then you should have a better grasp on what you'd be interested in picking up.
>>
>>31708811
Okay. Here's hoping I get something even better from this booster to make up for it!
>>
>>31706102
>>Isn't that only like 25 bucks
More like $310
>>
>>31708117
Download the client, then start off just playing through the tutorials and get as many packs as you can that way. Then play Theme format for a while (including theme tourneys to win some actually tradable packs) on the ladder. But the sooner you can get out of theme and into Standard Format the better since it's really a totally different game. By this point you'll have a stockpile of cards from the locked packs, plus enough tradable packs to get you started on a legit deck. Most importantly, you'll be beginning to know your own style in the game and have some kind of idea of what deck you want to try to build. It will be shitty at first of course, but you slow-build your way up to a deck capable of winning more standard tourneys and getting more packs to trade. Or you can purchase codes. Or you can play the stock market/card profit flipping game.

Long story short in a week or so you'll have a much better idea of how to play, what you want to play exactly, and a little pile of tradable packs to get you started. This general can be pretty helpful so long as you don't come in pants-on-head retarded.
>>
>>31708117
Here's what you need to know about deckbuilding in PTCG

1. You don't build around a color, you build around a pokemon (or two). Notice how nobody ever talks about red/blue/green decks outside of theme. Pick your primary attacker, then maybe a secondary attacker then a few pokemon that support them.

2. Majority of your deck should be trainers unless you have a really good reason for it not to (ie building around a pokemon like Vespiquen or Typhlosion). Generally, unless you have a reason to (running max elixir with pokemon with attacks that scale with energy usually) you shouldn't include more energy than you need to power two attackers at a time, there are items/trainers like super rod or brock that let you shuffle energy back into your deck that are less likely to be 'dead draws' than energy cards are.

Mandatory trainers for 99% of decks: 4 Sycamore, 2 N, 2 Lysandre, 4 Ultra Ball, 3-4 Trainer Mail, 4 VS Seeker

3. Notice what those cards, other than Lysandre do. They let you move through your deck faster. PTCG is a very draw/shuffle heavy game. Good decks have a 'draw engine', a way to move through your deck quickly to get the cards you need to win the game. Most decks use those mandatory supporters plus 2-3 Shaymin-EX. Greninja BREAK uses Dive Ball + Frogadier. A very small number of decks use niche options like Octillery or double lucky helmet.
