So in the picture, Lillie is playing with Pokémon like nothing, but in the present day, she's frightened of them.

If you asked a bunch of psychologists about this, the majority of them would say that Lillie was either a victim of a traumatic event or that she witnessed a traumatic event, and the fact that they showed Lusamine means the anime DOES have plans on showcasing the Ultra Beast arc (unless it's some weird movie thing).

Almost all long-running anime start out a new arc all light-hearted and fun. You don't want it to start out edgy and meaningful because how the hell are you going to keep that up for 100+ episodes? What would XY&Z have been like if the Zygarde arc started in XY? SM will start out slow and fun, Ash might even challenge some Totems, then somewhere along the line, the Ultra Beast arc will start. Of course, it'll have some hints along the way to keep the viewers interested.

The games had the deepest plot for a Pokémon game to date, something very few people expected with they saw the original trailers. We all thought it was just going to be a short game with island fun and dumbed down mechanics.

Who knows, maybe the plot of the SM anime might also be highly intricate and we just can't see it yet since we're at the beginning.

The thing is, we haven't even scratched the surface of the Ultra Beast realm yet. If they plan on doing the DPPt remakes, that might play into the anime as well. Lusamine might be the final boss...or maybe Mohn was taken away deliberately to cause her to break.
