He fights every strong enemy he faces whether he can win or not. Mega trainers, elite 4s, champions, legendaries, primals. Everything. He may have lost a lot but he did get stronger because of those losses and eventually got strong enough to take on elite 4 level. He's training like hell.

In return, he's not really happy. It's what happens when you focus only on fighting. No wasting time befriending COTDs or watching tripokalons. When he beat Ayaka, the only thing on his mind was having a rematch so he can fight again. It's why when they're shown passing each other, Ash was shown smiling with friends while Alan looks sad alone. It's also symbolized by Ash using a team while Alan only has 1 pokemon.

Now that it's 2016, I'm going to marry Serena!

Watched the movie raw after getting home last night and it's pretty good, I don't think it's rushed or cluttered. Story is kept simple enough, the right time is spent on building Hoopa's character before shit goes down and the battle between legendaries, while not mindblowing due to being focused on stalling on Ash's part and not having any legendary be knocked out, was still pretty sweet. Great music too.

Technically, he's not trying to be the strongest pokemon trainer or pokemon master. He's trying to be the strongest mega trainer and you can only use one mega anyway.

But yeah, for his purpose of getting stronger to protect people from any future problem, getting more pokemon will be better. Ash will eventually teach him that no one can do everything alone and it's fine to depend on your friends. Alan already had to depend on Manon in the past and he just has to learn to accept that help, not burden himself with everything. And if this happens, you just know this is going to lead to Alan getting more pokemon and showing up with a full team in the league.
