>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, OneShot, Rimworld, Age of Decadence, VA-11 HALL-A, Subnautica, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Darkwood, Braid, Monolith, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, West Of Loathing, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago and /jrpg/ is welcome.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

I actually haven't encountered anything wedding related so far, so good luck on that!

I got through the Silent Forest house. Get a torch and use it to burn away at the poison stuff at the ground. Then go around, find the code for the doors, and you'll get into Silent Forest.

Nah, Darkwood is horror done right, all the fear comes from thick atmosphere and really good sound/graphic design.

There are no jumpscares as far as I know (not by design at least, it's prefectly possible to get spooken by an enemy appearing out of nowhere).

I just rolled a psi monk and I'm loving it. Is stacking evasion/dodge a valid defense later on?
>>
>>187110308
> Is stacking evasion/dodge a valid defense later on?
Yes, as long as you put a decent amount of points into both and/or wear siphoner leather armor/tabis and/or take related feats.

Don't get stunned/incapacitated since that reduces both to 0. Same for off-balance debuff applied by sledgehammer enemies and siphoners. Also psi abilites cannot miss so dodge/evasion is generally useless against them.

Overall I don't like them very much since they require a lot of investment (be it skill points, equipment or feats) and become useless when you need the most, but it's viable.
>>
>>187110308
>>187111272
I have 101 effective evasion and they still hit me a lot.
>>
>>187113028
The number alone doesn't really say much, especially for evasion.

Everything depends on your dodge/evasion relative to the enemy's offensive skill and, in case of ranged weapons, distance and light.

Overall I wouldn't even bother if you can't get the to 200+ effective skill by level 25, preferably a bit over that. This includes gear/feat though, so it's easy to reach with infused siphoner armor/tabis.

Also, evasino decreases damage from AoE attacks like grenades.

3-4 shiny stones will get you right back up, bud. Sell sell sell- but save every shotgun shell, or small/medium caliber magazine you find. Also, have at least 50 matches for when you leave the area.

It feels better to play permadeath anyways. The game is not long enough for this to become frustrating and it adds to the fear.

>>187122103
I'm probably 18-21 hours in my first playthrough and I am only half way through the swamp. I can see how people who have been playing it for years since its initial Alpha might be able to breeze through on a single permadeath, but I like the 4 lives + Embryo equals 1 life concept.

Darkwood guys, anyone know where the train in the Old Woods is supposed to be? The journal says it's in the Northeastern part of the area, but I can't find it anywhere. Found the hunter's cabin, the abandoned barn, and a bunch of smaller areas, but I can't find this freaking train anywhere. I thought maybe it'd be near the train tracks too, but that's all the way to the southwest. Anyone wanna help me out?

Demos still exist even on Steam. Sometimes they are just the prologue, sometimes they are a unique little story within the game's engine. Sometimes beating the demo gets you some extra goodies in the game or through the dev's site. That being said it isn't common to see anymore but they still pop up.

... Although once I saw one pop up months after the game's release. Logic.

At least if you pirate the game you arent giving money to anybody. Keyselling is a shitstain in game industry, sometimes with money laundering included.

Keys can come from stolen credit cards, scammed devs, and other debious means.
>>
>>187205547
>what makes them worst than just outright pirating the game?
People are getting those keys from devs for free by pretending to be reviewers/streamers/etc.

Pirating is just lost potential sales, key shenanigans are legit theft.

It's fake news, the keys aren't stolen, there's no proof of that. The claim that they are bought with stolen credit cards is bullshit because Valve nulls keys that were obtained through cards reported stolen or if the transaction was reversed or cancelled for any reason. On those sites there are of course some people doing that and their keys will not work. But it's always the sellers selling only one or few keys. If you're not a retard you buy from a seller with a high approval rating with hundreds to thousands of keys avalable.
If you buy from those sellers the keys are all obtained legit and already bought and paid for but at consumer prices. Publishers are mad because unlike approved key sellers such as GMG they don't get the proper cut which they technically already got. It doesn't help the publisher/developer in the same way that buying used games does since you're buying something that's already been paid for. There is nothing wrong or unethical from grey market purchases. To say its worse than pirating is inarguably dishonest.

>We've also been flooded by emails! There's more of them than we are able to reply to, actually. The sad thing is, that a lot of those are scam emails. You know, when people claim to be a youtuber or blogger and ask for a Steam key. That key then gets sold through a shady platform. To be honest, we're fed up with it. This practice makes it impossible for us to do any giveaways or send keys to people who actually don't have the money to play Darkwood.

There's no way Tripwire, Square Enix, Bethesda, Tom Francis, Styg or whoever made Chivalry gave 70k-200k free copies of each of their games to "streamers" and "reviewers".
The majority of keys on these sites can not be possibly stolen. Those scammers are the one off sellers that are easy to ignore. Never have I gotten a bad key from g2a.
Anyway giving games to streamers is dumb because it's constantly been proven not even the biggest streamers can have that much an effect on sales anymore, countless indie devs have warned others in various blogs and articles on sites like gamasutra.

Fun fact, Notch, Minecraft guy, told people to go pirate the game if they weren't sure if they'd like it or not. While some can argue it's lost sales, there's a good chance those same people they're referring to would've never bought it in the first place. I'd honestly say it's more likely to generate extra sales through goodwill and similar ideals.

anything except grow. you are OK going outside if you have a parka (and maybe also a hat).

I needed just under 200 stockpiled meals for 6 people.

also, just got my entire group killed by manhunter deer that I was hunting to prepare for the winter.

what is the optimum freezer size? As big as you can power? or is it better to have more small ones?
>>
>>187238915
Okay then.

As for the freezer, I like to have it 5x5, something like that. A bit smaller, maybe. Coolers are less expensive than sunlamps, so it's better to keep a lot of a stuff. If you lack energy, just have your kitchens set to (pawns x 4) prepared meal, and keep the raw ingredients around : they don't spoil as quickly as the prepared meals.

If you have passive coolers, you can build a 3x3 airlock around your freezer's cooler to keep the temperature under control (since passive coolers lock it at 15°) and thus limit your energy comsuption.

There is literally no reason not to keep a partially-empty mag and make it possible to combine them in the inventory.

>inb4 hard to implement
Gasoline already works exactly like this. You retain partially spent tanks and can combine them to make a full one.

It's fucking stupid and the worst part is there is literally no reason for it to be stupid, the mechanic is already in place.
>>

>>
>>187248321
I'm surprised you don't just drop partial magazines on the ground.

I actually might. It seems very easy to implement, just make it exactly like gasoline and make it so reload is done with the biggest mag.

I'm surprised no one pointed it out before in all those years of development, it triggers the fuck out of my /k/ autism and probably does the same to most people who are into firearms.

On the bright side the sound effect and the kick of the pistol are fantastic, feels like an actual gun rather than an anemic peashooter like in most games.

>>187248979
That would be even better.

I would be fine with either, as long as my ammo doesn't magically disappear.
>>
>>187249584
It's also the most realistic option when in combat.
>Rushing to unload your mag and reload with a fresh one
>The magazine itself and all bullets still in it would naturally drop to the ground since you just hit the release and then grab a fresh one
Also, what is the difference in a magazine and a clip? I know a lot of people get ass-mad over the latter.

>reloads, remembering to carefully place the magazine in your pocket
you'll be thanking the gods you were able to reload and five miles from there before you remember you dropped the used mag

>>
>>187250781
>It's also the most realistic option when in combat.
Yeah, it basically boils down to tactical reload (spending an extra second to retain the mag) vs. speed reload (saving time by letting the mag stay on the ground).

I really don't care about that level of detail though, it's a survival horror, not ARMA. But a precious resource disappearing for no reason? Fuck that.

>Also, what is the difference in a magazine and a clip?
Magazine holds rounds that are fed automatically into the chamber of a firearm.

Clip is tool used to store bullets and make it easier to load them into firerms with internal, non-detachable magazines.
>>
>>187251852
Ah. Thank you for the clarification. That makes sense, too.
>>
>>187251421
>magazine in your pocket

Then make the mags drop on the ground, makes no difference to me. I'm not running five miles away during night invasions.

It's not the retardo land you came from either.

Just purchased Darkwood on the recommendation of a friend. I get scared super easy and the prologue had me pausing and walking around just to avoid it. Best way to really "experience" it? Tips or anything for a new player? I know very little about it, other than it's kind of Lovecraftian.

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to show off some progress on my next game.
This one's gonna be smaller than DashBored and will probably have a much shorter development time.
Here's some previews for it.

>>
Also if you guys are still looking for a DashBored rep I have a few ideas
>>
Darkwoodfags, I'm fucking furious. I just made it to chapter 2 and it turns out that the Bikeman can't fucking come to the Swamp. I had so much stuff back at the original map and if I can't get it back I think I might quit this fucking game outright. Please tell me there's someway to go back. I will deliver shit back and forth myself if I have to.

I can't seem to find any info online, and I can't find the files in the steamapps folder.
>>
>>187269154
>>187267320
Yep, looks like that's the case.

To anyone else playing Darkwood, don't start Chapter 2 unless you are absolutely sure you're carrying everything you're going to want. I'd recommend a shovel, since there's a bunch of shit to dig up and now I'm going to be grinding out shit to get another one.

Darkwood is a good game, but fuck this stupid ass decision to the moon and back. All my fun is immediatly gone.

I am mad.
>>
>>187269945
Unless you left your watch and your guns in chapter 1 you dont really have to get mad. Surviving the night get you like 250 Reputation, The Three allow you to get guns and axes/shovels, and the area itself is pretty loot-rich.
>>
>>187266381
Sure, go ahead.
>>
>>187265957
Make sure your new game has more juice.

Dashbored was deathly in need of more juice.

Anyhow what kind of game is it?
>>
>>187268424
>limited time
Technically, no. But once you've looted everything in a given area, you pretty much have to move onto the next safe-house, since you will eventually run out of stuff.
>>
Only just started playing Darkwood but I noticed 'leveling up' for the first time makes you get fucked up by darkness.

Is getting perks from leveling up even worth being weak to darkness?
>>
>>187270947
That one's really mild if you remember to put your lamps all in 1 room and carry a lantern/flares/Flashlight in your bag for when shit gets dark.
And yes, some Perks are very worthwhile.
>>
>>187270947
Some of the most useful skills are :
Unlimited run for ~30 seconds
Enemies scared of you for ~30 seconds
360° vision for some time

If you think you can live without that, then dont level up.

In all fairness I'm happier if it can't be savescummed, but I don't know if that really is true. Anon who encountered it reloaded a slightly earlier save and that time it didn't show up.

But. We still don't know that damn condition. It is possible that he unknowingly fulfilled it the first time, but not the second time when he reloaded.

Or there is a condition, but also an element of randomness, in which case it can be savescummed, just not always.

As for making it a fixed encounter- eh. For all we know he will appear as a fix encounter somewhere else in a future version. This particular encounter is just a teaser. For something that has nil to do with savescumming. Maybe. Or something. It's a mystery.

Eleres is kind of useless in comparison to regen. Psi carapace is pretty much the obvious choice, unless you really need crit/sniper defence.
Kevlar isn't all that useful in DC save for Faceless/Tchortists/Arke. Consider, though, that a pure psychic needs 3 turns at most to kill Tchort.

>>
>>187282905
Cold and electricity resists are pretty much worthless.

Bio is a decent choice for DC since there are lots of enemies who deal bio damage there and you are forced to run through toxic gas in the final boss fight.

Sturdy vest is superior to regen for any build that doesn't have a huge HP pool and very high resists and even then it's arguable. The flat HP bonus gives you better odds of surviving attacks that would 1-shot you otherwise and might gives more HP overall if the combat doesn't last for long.

I would go either sturdy or bio if its specifically for DC, leaning towards sturdy. Obvioulsy you should use the psi beetle carapace as the armor plate.
>>
>>187292157
I have limited raiders invasions because it's ez mode and it's still early, but sandbags, traps and leaving a killing field does it. Beside, I had more issues with my own pawns than with raiders, I'm not hyped to get a raid while my pawns are freaking out.

Not unless you provoke them, nope. But you won't be able to use their trader anyway. You can't get into Fort Apogee unless you get invited, and the trader will only do business with you if you actually join the Protectorate.

Same goes for the Core City faction traders, you only get the one you join.

You can finish the entire Drones questline without turning them hostile, don't worry. The only way to fuck that up is to leave witnesses when the game explicitly tells you to kill 'em all if you are seen or caught on camera.

Anyone got tips for Darkwood? Skimmed through this thread, but all seems even further than where I am (just finished night 2)

Should I focus on barricading windows, upgrade my bench? Still have yet to find a weapon too, other than stones + torch

What should I carry out for when I go supply hunting? Nothing? One bandage?

Rimworld is the kind of game that's hilarious if it happens to someone else. I want to have a colony that lasts more than 2 years, dammit!
>>
>>187319354
>Should I focus on barricading windows
If you have an abundance of planks/nails, you can. If you don't focus on the room you will spend the night in and the adjacent rooms if you can.

I usually pick a rather spacious room (so you have plenty of room to maneuver if you have to fight) with no more than 3 entrances, preferably windows. Don't stand in front of windows even if you barricade them- the enemies will still be able to see a glimpse of you, just like you can. Unless you cover the window with a wardrobe or something that is.

Broken glass is really good. It damages enemies that step on it quite a bit but you can walk on it freely. All i takes is to throw a glass bottle.

Also a tip- if you are short on gasoline, you can sell the wood to the trader in exchange for planks instead. You will get less planks (about 2 per wood instead of 3 if you used the mill) but you will keep the gasoline.

> upgrade my bench?
Yeah, rush to lvl 4 so you can make a pistol. You will need 2 toolboxes for that, wolfman sells them if you can't find them.

Then wait until you have enough rep with the trader to buy the handgun frame, gun parts and tape. You might find one of those so don't buy any until you have enough rep to buy everything you need.

Try to keep and buy all small caliber mags you can, too. Trader has 1 for sale every day for 100 rep, once you get into the forest you will get 150 rep every day so you will never run out as long as you shoot no more than a mag every day.

Keep in mind it's my 1st playthrough so maybe there is a fixed location that you can find a pistol in early on that I missed. Worked out fine for me.

>Still have yet to find a weapon too, other than stones + torch
Craft a plank with nails.

>What should I carry out for when I go supply hunting? Nothing? One bandage?
Weapon, spare weapon, watch, 2-3 bandages, 2 mags once you have a pistol.

Seriously? I wish i had known that earlier. back in hideout 2 I turned one room that kept getting broken into into a death trap by covering every square inch of space with shattered glass. the only problem was that I could never go into it again without picking all the glass back up.

You pick a bunch of people from different excuses plots (either lost colonist, or tribals forced to exile), each with their own stories, goal, and flaws, and you try to survive in what is basically a casual version of Dwarf Fortress.
>Is it fun?
It is, even through it suffers from several issues : the game is in developement, the AI can fuck you up, your people are legitimately retarded (they will eat raw meat in the freezer rather than pick a lavish meal and eat it at a table), and a lot of stuff isn't explained.
>What's the end goal?
Fuck off from the planet. Either stock on supplies and cross half the planet to a rescue ship, or build one.

>>
>>187331861
>the AI can fuck you up
What I mean is that, kinda like in Left 4 Dead, you have an AI director that causes various events.
Sometimes it's good (trade caravans, psychic soother), sometimes it's bad (pirate raid, rapist, malfunctions), and sometimes you're not even sure if it's random or not (batteries going FZZZT).

First playthrough, reached old woods hidedout.

Died 6 times in total, twice to banshees during the night, once to savages during the night because I threw a molotov too close to myself, once to big dog because I fucked up big, another time I walked into a trap while being chased by a savage, then finally died in the old woods to a chomper because it was raining and I couldn't see shit.

Not even mad, glad the game is challenging. I think I'm going to restart on normal though. At least I'm not going blind this time.

Question about Darkwood, since I'm just starting out (and playing on normal):
Is there any "trap" to playing? I'm always afraid, in games like this, of missing some vital thing I should've known about and fucking over my playthrough forever because of it.
Like, if I just go in more or less blind, and take my time, will I do all right? I'm okay with dying sometimes or not getting every piece of content, but I mean are there any resources that are very limited and I have to choose where to spend them?

A specific example of this concern: you need gas to power the generator, right? Is gas limited? I want to take my time and be patient exploring the game but the scenario I'm worried about is I spend too much gasoline and I've looted all the surrounding homes so now I have no gas left for the generator and can't survive the night.
Or I spend all my nails and planks in bad investments (or lose them from dying), and now I'm just out of them forever. Loot doesn't respawn, right? So wouldn't it be possible to exhaust all local loot spots and then just be fucked?
Infinite drain but not infinite income, you know?
The game says to be patient but I'm worried that being too patient will fuck me over, VS something like Subnautica where I can take all the time in the world and there's always more copper ore out there.

Also, Indiegogo content yea or nay?
>>
In Darkwood, does the generator drain faster based on how many lamps you have on, or is it constant?
>>
>>187344038
Ill give you the same advice If give to LISA first timers. Don't worry about it. Just be yourself
>>
>>187344038
havent played the indiegogo content, doesn't seem like anything is missing. I think it's just a dream sequence.
Gas is not limited, whatever the traders sell seems to replenish each day.
If you run out of resources that should be an indicator to go further into the woods. Just be smart about your decisions and you'll be fine.

>>187344176
I believe it drains the same amount regardless.
>>
>>187344038
>Infinite drain but not infinite income, you know?
You do have kind-of-infinite income in the form of a trader that comes every morning. He re-stocks every morning and you gain 100-200 reputation (in-game currency) for surviving the night.

So technically, as long as you don't die during the night, you can always buy a tank of gasoline and enough planks/nails to keep going. It shouldn't be necessary though.

> you need gas to power the generator, right? Is gas limited? I want to take my time and be patient exploring the game but the scenario I'm worried about is I spend too much gasoline and I've looted all the surrounding homes so now I have no gas left for the generator and can't survive the night.
It is limited and you have to conserve it at first, but you will quickly end up with so many tanks you won't know what to do with them.

Just try to turn the generator as late as possible (the night starts at 20:00, I usually turn it on 19:20 or 30 and rush to the saferoom), try to limit the usage of mill by selling wood and buying planks from the trader (unless you really need a bunch of them) and try to craft with alcohol instead of gasoline when possible.

>Or I spend all my nails and planks in bad investments (or lose them from dying), and now I'm just out of them forever. Loot doesn't respawn, right? So wouldn't it be possible to exhaust all local loot spots and then just be fucked?
Wood and nails are extremaly common.

Generally, once you explore everything in the area, it's time to move on to the next one.

One more question: I find myself low on storage. I'm only in Hideout 1 on Day 2 but I've got a bunch of junk I want to hang onto and only two containers (a wardrobe and a drawer) to stash things in. Can I put stuff in the corpse by the generator and not have it vanish? Do I have other options?

Should I get gunpoint? I've got a shitty laptop that I'm going to be stuck with for a while and I've got some good platformers but I want something new.

Got SMB, TBoI (Both vanilla and rebirth with exp), Undertale, Cave Story, Spelunky, BB Theater , Limbo , Nihilumbra. So, besides these, can you lads suggest me some low-spec indies? (2D Platformer preferably)
>>
>>187383606
You probably should, yeah. But keep in mind it's not really platformer, it's a puzzle game.
While I really liked it, it suffers from a few issues : namely, some levels are really good, with many different approaches, and others are way too linear. It really feels like the dev had no clear idea how to make interesting levels, and just focused on puzzles.

Be honest to the policeman.
>>
>>187383814
Thanks. I think I'll go for it, then.
>>
>>187383976
It's a bit like Thief, in fact. Some levels are really good, you can climb the wall, jump through the windows, turn the lights off and just sneak, use the elevators as distractions, hold guards at gunpoint (doesn't work with pros), etc...
And some others are just "rewire this into this, and then this into this, and then wait for a guard to pass".

It pisses me off how certain hazards in Rimworld are totally random. Like, leaving batteries under the rain is a bad idea, but sometimes, the power conduit explodes for no reason, you get animals attacking you, stuff like that.
And the Steam forum's answer? "why dont u play a different game lol".
>>
>>187384384
shit sometimes just happening for no good reason and having to deal with the resulting challenge is fine, I get it, whoever did the spotweld on the battery casing did a bad job or you were stupid enough to have one too many excellent marble statues so you jump a wealth threshhold, whatever.

I get the feeling the developer built too much too fast and hasn't had the drive or a chance to bring everything in line again. which I guess is the point of an honest alpha? new features over balancing.
>>
>>187384538
I don't like it. I lack the words to properly express how much I hate randomness, and Rimworld's director system is nothing but randomness.

The severity of events, especially raids, is tied (but not solely controlled) to wealth (wealth includes not just gear/food/drugs/etc, but also buildings/furniture/appliances), so having drop pods full of valuables is actually not a gift of random chance, but a land-mine (unless said pods fall within your "home", then it's a curse), in fact, every "positive" event that comes to mind is basically sabotage, except the spaceship debris, which are only a problem if you make them one.

You can always disable events with the scenario editor, the game is still in alpha, there are a lot of things not yet finely tuned.

There are some cool things you can do with the scenario editor, just wish I could find a way to get a constant flashstorm to be mapwide...

I've had a ton of success with politics in Renaissance, occupying both Supreme Commander and the Cardinal in Hamburg, just need to assassinate the damn Queen.
Money is actually easy as fuck, and don't be afraid to takes loans if you know how much money you can expect to make.
With a full fledged patron, a craftsman, and a trainee patron I'm easily making 100k a turn about 40 years in on 2 year turns.
I'm probably doing shit since I focused on rushing the politics instead of cash too, spending shitloads on perfume and alderman necklaces.
Not to mention the costs of going to war for Imperial fame and the country estate.
>>
>>187388369
Honestly, I care little about politic, I'm just into it because the mayor hates my guts, so I want her removed from the office.
I also wasted some money by buying buildings that I didn't know how to use, like bandit camps.
>>
>>187388059
The real money maker I found were the following (starting with a Patron and marrying a Craftswoman):
Early game: Fisheries for fried herring for sure
Mid game: Lumberyard + Orchard + Tavern
Late game: Where the money really comes rolling in is mines + jewelry stores / mines + farms + weavers for noble clothes. I've never experimented much with Scholar or Rouge however. I'm assuming the Scholar's perfume production building is good money, but I've never made shit from loaning money with the pawn broker.

Hi just dropping by to say RNG can be perfectly fine as a way to throw players into uncomfortable and challenging situations.

HOWEVER, your game has to give players a decent fighting chance, be it through preparing (positioning, equipment, etc), or being able to handle the situation with superior playing.

"Fuck you RNG" that just unavoidably ends your run is some bullshit, though. A loss should be a culmination of your mistakes and/or sloppy footwork at a crucial moment.
>>
>>187390739
>This isn't a shitposting competition

>>
>>187390742
>your game has to give players a decent fighting chance, be it through preparing (positioning, equipment, etc), or being able to handle the situation with superior playing
Indeed. And Rimworld can fuck you beyond recovery. One of my games had my entire electrical installation exploding for no reason, several time in a row, which deprived me from needed components, and killed my indoor grows.
But no, nevermind, just "git gud lol", everything is fine with the RNG just fucking your game up without giving you any hope of recovery.
>>
>>187390902
It doesn't take a huge amoun of gitting gud to avoid newbie mistakes like that.

Never store too much energy in the active powergrid. Build separate disconnectable battery packs to store excess energy for emergencies. Always lay wiring inside walls, preferably stone, to mitigate zzzt damage.
>>
>>187390902
>One of my games had my entire electrical installation exploding for no reason
Does Rimworld at least explain it away with a storm or rodents or anything?

Bugged me in Stardew Valley (and Harvest Moon...) that you'd just randomly get rocks, tree stumps, and whatnot cropping up. Paths and other fixtures breaking for no reason.

Really I'd be happy if there was a vandalism/storm/etc event or something every so often to explain it away.

I know it's just in service of gameplay albeit kinda monotonous gameplay... but it still bugs me.
>>
>>187391170
Even with precautions, it's still random. It's not like there's a hidden counter that will cause the event passed a certain treshold, it's just random. Taking precautions lower the risks, but doesn't make it fully reliable.
There's still a probablity that you might lose your entire crop if you're just unlucky or if you haven't had time toset up a full system.

How do you build disconnectable battery packs? It's the power switch?

>>187391258
>Does Rimworld at least explain it away with a storm or rodents or anything?
No. I mean, you have two kinds of events, you have the "BZZT", who basically happens when you leave electrical doodad under the rain (that includes the conduit as well), and you have the totally random malfunction, in which you need to repair the building.
It's a minor setback if it's a wind turbine, it's more annoying if it's the battery, and it happens to me a fucking lot.

>I know it's just in service of gameplay
Gameplay, it keeps the game interesting, indeed, and forces you to adapt to the new situation, but I find it extremely irritating when it happens several time in a row. Sometimes I feel like the director just has a grudge against me.
And when it's not the director, it's the AI that's atrocious. When gases will be implemented, I'm going to kill my entire colony because I'm tired of these morons eating raw meat off the ground in the cold when they're just two meters away from fine meal and a table next to a heater.
>>
>>187391258
>Really I'd be happy if there was a vandalism/storm/etc event or something every so often to explain it away.
Didn't stardew have summer typhoons that spawned a shitload of rocks and logs, or was that a harvest moon?
>>
>>187391258
>Does Rimworld at least explain it away with a storm or rodents or anything?
It's a random powergrid failure. All energy stored in your batteries is discharged at a short circuited piece of wiring. It often catches babby's first base by surprise, but its ill effects are completely avoidable with the simple basebuilding advice I gave in >>187391170

>>187391532
It's not random, there are static preconditions (only >50% full batteries do zzzt) and the explosion is always 100% equal to the wattage discharged from your batteries. It can be made completely harmless by laying wiring inside strong blocks and keeping your powergrid's stored energy low.
>>
>>187391690
Whatever the case, there's still the regular (between seasons) hit of junk and disrepair to your farm.
>>

>>
>>187391750

>>
>>187391690

>>187391750
I'm not talking about the zzzt thing, I was complaining (mostly) about breakdowns (http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Event#Breakdown). These are 100% random. Through zzzt are annoying as well, but they're mostly beginner's trap.

LISA: The First

>>
>>187391889
Cheers mate.
>>
>>187391823
Under no conditions should you keep too much energy stored in a single active powergrid. Few batteries to cover daily power input fluctuation is enough.

But it's not a bad idea to store overproduced energy for emergencies. Just make small, disconnectable battery pack groups. You can have multiple powergrids too if you enjoy micromanaging that shit, but generally it's easier to just wire all generators to one grid and mitigate the only ill effect of doing that by creating small disconnectable battery groups.

>>187391869
But that's even less of an issue than zzzt. Running out of components is 100% player's fault, no excuse there.

>>
>>187392573
>A shame, I liked the expression of thought in material symbols.
Okay?

Anyhow you can play it on basebuilder difficulty with a passive and slow storyteller. There will still be good and bad random events and very weak "raids" against your colony, but nothing stressful. You can also change the storyteller and difficulty at any time, so if you get a successful base running and get bored, you can increase the challenge at your pace.
>>
>>187392573
It has a mode called Base Builder in it I think which reduces the horrible shit that can happen to you :)
>>
>>187392947
>>187393086
What does the difficulty change?
I mean, you have Civilizations games, in which picking an easier difficulty not only limit the AI in what she can do, but also gives you massive production and happiness bonuses, which completely fucks you up once you decide to move up a bit.
Is Rimworld the same, or can I screw up by myself without going in hard mode?

Sadly, these games are too cute, don't expect spanking your wife with celery while sodomizing her while she squeals like a donkey.
>>
>>187393234
Threat scale (5% to 130%)
Colonist mood bonus (+10 to -8)
Base sell price multiplier (100% to 80%)
Crop yield multiplier (130% to 90%)
Disease interval multiplier (300% to 90%)
Enemy reproduction rate factor (10% to 100%)

The biggest differences imo are the colonist mood bonuses (easier to keep people happy in a shitty base) and threat scale (makes raids a joke.) Easiest difficulties also disable the nastiest random events.

Basebuilder mode is comfy but you probably want to increase the difficulty as you get the basics of the game.

You can't do anything there at this point.

>received an invitation to the wedding/party
That's a side "quest". Better take molotovs with you if plan on going there, there's a really tough enemy in there.

> Also I have a shovel blade and tons of wood but I have no option to craft or repair it.
You need a shovel blade, stick , tape and sufficetly upgraded workbench to craft a shovel.

The only way to obtain a stick is to loot it from savages. Tape can be bought from the Trader. Workbench needs toolboxes to be upgraded, wolfman sells them or you could find them in Silent Forest.

Your storyteller AI also makes a huge difference on how the game plays out. One of them is for comfy base building. But designing a defensible base is always a big part of base building. There are more threats than simple raiders.

So technically you always have to deal with threats but like I said 5% threat scale is a joke. Where normal difficulty would throw 15-20 well-armed raiders at you, in easiest difficulty you will get one unarmed hobo who probably dies to wild animals on his way to your base. By the time you get anything remotely dangerous you will be more than able to deal with them.

>I have no idea how I'm gonna haul all my important supplies to my new place
Don't worry about it, there is an in-game mechanic that adresses this.

There will be abike man at hideout 2 that can bring all the stuff from hideout to hideout in exchange for alcohol. He will also drink all the alcohol you left in the hideout and bring empty bottles instead.

That said you shouldn't run out of space that quickly. Maybe sell some of the stuff to the Trader.

Rimworld
Welp, this is the end.
Intense Cass is pretty hard in this update, gotta give that.
>>
What does the difficulty change in Rimworld?
Like, it is even viable to try the highest difficulty, or are you supposed to lower the difficulty, breath a bit, rebuild your base, and then raise it again?
>>
>>187414223
>What does the difficulty change in Rimworld?
The size of raids, mood buffs/debuffs, amount of crops harvested, trade penalty, how often your pawns get sick... stuff like that.

You're not supposed to lower difficulty to "breath a bit" because difficulty makes changes not only in raids.
Nobody will stop you from changing difficulty, though.
>>
>>187414653
So it's theorically possible to play an entire game with the difficulty cranked up to maximum?

Or to pacify a region in easy mode, and then raise it to hard?
>>
>>187414890
>So it's theorically possible to play an entire game with the difficulty cranked up to maximum?
If you git gud, yes. It was actually pretty easy to pull off in previous version, now it got harder.

>Or to pacify a region in easy mode, and then raise it to hard?
I'm almost certain you can raid all the pirate bases to eliminate them, but then it leaves you with mechanoids who will come in place of pirate raids.
So in the end? No, the war never ends.
>>
>>187414223
>>187414890
It's theoretically possible and easily doable if you savescum. Also the actual difficulty depends more on your starting area (and to lesser extent, storyteller) than the difficulty setting. Certain extreme locations are much harder than others, while some are easymoodo.

So far my best permadeath run was with Rough Randy, because Randy is not only the most fun storyteller, but he is also the easiest one once you get used to his crazy style. He has way higher critical colonist limit than the others.
>>

Nah, more like embarking on a dead frozen world that would never pass normal worldgen limits.

Rimworld has different AI storytellers that determine the when, how and what of the random events you get. Unlike DF which has an entire world simulated in the background.

It's a Cave Story mod that has grinding as a core mechanic and little in the way of story. Not the best of concepts, I have to say.
>>
>>187420441
In Rimworld? Two steps: 1) Don't freeze to death. 2) Don't starve to death.

Start by locating the closest geothermal vent and building a heat-retaining room around it in a hurry. After that you need to expand really fast and get indoor food production going on before your colonists starve. It's very important to hunt and kill all starting animals on the map before they leave - the starting food rations won't get you anywhere near first harvest. On the positive side, you certainly won't need to build freezers to store perishable food. If you make it to the first harvest, you can probably get a self-sustaining colony started.
>>
Have anyone managed to kill the black chomper in the Prologue?

It is possible to deal damage to him and the dream does not end until he actually hits you. I managed to hit him 2 times before getting hit myself, I think 7-8 would be enough.

>>
>>187424191
By default you can only have a single colony at a time. Caravans are just dots that move slowly across the landscape unless you get ambushed in which case the game generates a small map for you to fight it out on, then it forces you out after a day or two.

Caravaning is a risky bet but I'm sure you'll discover why.

You can raise the number of permanent colonies allowed in the game options menu but if you try to go full castle on more than two maps at a time the game comes to an absolute performance standstill, full on slideshow mode.

Well, yeah. But the fact they're willing to just put their game out there for you to play and then buy if you like is a bold move nowadays.
>>
>>187437236
They have a pretty good reason for that.

>As you know, we're from Poland. Growing up in the 90s, our country was going through a capitalistic boom after 50 years of socialism. There was pretty much no way of getting games legally back then. In my town, the local pirate's shop was located exactly next door to the police station. There were no anti-piracy laws back then. My family wasn't poor in any way, but I could actually afford paying for legal games about when I started earning money after high school. And to be honest, I also bought from key resellers (until I realized where the vast majority of keys are coming from).

>So guess what, if it wasn't for piracy, there would not be any Darkwood, as we wouldn't be playing games when we were kids, and would pick up other hobbies. I played games for free, and now I'm sharing my game, for free, to people in the same situation as I was.

I'm from Poland and can confirm this is true.

You are like a little baby, watch this. Day 9, I'm yet to visit the Village.

You really should use/stack/sell/craft with your shit though. You can stack your scrap metal, make a lockpick out of wire, extract essence out of a dead rat, surplus of empty bottles can be used to make broken glass traps, etc. Shiny stones have no use beyond selling them, your workbench is lvl 4 so you can sell the toolbox as well, you have a lamp so you might as well sell flares/batteries, potatoes/bread/egss are inferior to bandages so why not sell them, etc.
