Thinking of starting a new run in EU4 as a Native American, but with a difference. Instead of sealing off the coasts, I want to conquer only the Great Lakes states of the US (Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio) and play tall, pumping lots of excess mana into Cahokia and Kaskasia (farmland provinces). I may conquer Euro colonised territory, but will carve it into buffer clients later where able.

What would be some good ideas to be taking for this, or starting nations? For idea groups, I know economic is essential, and Quantity complements it with the Economic-Quantity policy. I can probably ignore religious/humanist because of the low province count, but I might go Protestant at some point. As for nations, Shawnee starts with unique ideas, a strong position and 2 provinces, but Illini can migrate straight to farmland, and Potawatomi and Fox aren't much further. Iroquois is also nearby and has unique ideas if I feel like adding upstate NY to this miniblob, while I could alternatively cheese a migration with Cherokee and use them too, because of their fort bonus idea.

True, but it also makes the estates incredibly powerful, which then makes the negative penalties from both revoking and giving them privileges seriously damaging. I think that the revolt privilege gives about +8 revolt for every province they hold if they go above 50% influence, which is insane if you're playing a nation with 30% religious unity like mine. So I got wrecked by the religious war for a third time and completely restarted once again. It seems that I was retarded all along and that you can purge heretics from the start if you don't absorb the heretic Persian provinces and reduce your religious unity below 50% by doing that. Moreover, all of the provinces I got had a 100% autonomy which made my estates seriously powerful, which lead to me having to give them all their demands and 15 corruption, which translates into +15% mana cost for everything.

I'm not sure since I haven't unlocked them yet, but didn't Engineering also give something like +25% damage to artillery? If that's the case then I can use this province (or a similar if I advance towards the Ottomans) as my main buffer fort while dumping an average-sized bait inf/art stack with a very good general which will technically obliterate pretty much any enemy unit, as the tight combat width will allow for my buffed artillery to slaughter their few front divisions constantly. An increased arty damage would truly help with those tactics

I thought that would have been harder, but the Turks avoided naval battles even tho they had like a +10 galley advantage. They lost ~45k troops by landing in Catalonia and Sicily and getting stackwiped. Only late game. Middle and early game Ottoman are starvign for manpower which is when youll need them. Besides the idea groups are amazing in other ways. Honestly better then the others if it werent for the others leading to better idea groups.

I'm nearing the end of a HO4 Italy game.

I started out with invading France and Yugoslavia, and then Greece and Romania all without triggering war with the UK. Then I turtled and built up until Germany invaded Poland and then went to war against the Soviet Union.

While that was going on I invaded Turkey and then pushed into the Soviet Union from Romania and Turkey while Germany held up most of their troops.

After annexing large parts of the Soviet Union I again built up for 2 more years until the UK declared war on me. Then I took control of the Mediterranean and invaded Iraq, puppeted Persia and then conquered India and Australia before occupying the British Isles.

I just have the US left and know I could win as I have way more factories/resources/puppeted troops at my disposal and a bunch of nukes but don't want to waste 2 or 3 more hours on a boring and anti-climatic campaign I know I could win.

Does /gsg/ have a consensus on the right settings to make HO4 a fun challenge with regards to the difficulty setting and the sliders that boost various nations?

This game was kinda easy and I would like more of a challenge but I don't know what settings strike the right balance between a fun challenge and being stupidly unfair.

I tried getting into HO3 but the autistic micromanagement was too boring for me.

I have a social life and prefer reading to vidya and so I have no interest in taking the time to set up the command/HQ etc interface again every single time I send my troops to battle in a new area.

I even enjoy the micromanagement of dwarf fortress but HO3 for me reached the point where it was no longer fun and just became tedious.

You join AI wars because you've ticked the 'join offensive wars' box for that AIs alliance. They may not always want favours, look up how to offer land instead...oftentimes they'll be happy to join if you split the conquest with them.

If you want to conquer north west africa as a beginner, go Castille, not Portugal....and don't be afraid to take things slow until you get the Iberian Wedding....then the Moors'll not stand a chance unless they've somehow allied Ottomans....or France.

Keeping states profitable is easy: don't let them get devastated in losing wars. Don't spend too much money on heavy ships or forts you don't need.
