Big events like these are different. Marik's gonna be playable, so he's going to instead be a gate event and not a roaming duelist.
Defeating the normal spawning SD's will have them drop some form of special currency that act the same as keys do for normal LD's. Once you've gotten enough of the currency, you'll be able to duel him at varying levels. A scoreboard will also happen, and the higher the duel assessment, the more points you get for the scoreboard. The scoreboard has tons of milestones on it containing cards, golds, gems, tons of stuff.
Very early on in the scoreboard is unlocking the Duelist themselves to play, so even if you don't have a farm deck, you'll get him no problem.

What decks should a new player look towards? I checked a starter guide and it had a few links to beginner decks but the links were dead.
I figured something cheap with high attack dark monsters would do really well early, but I don't want to waste time if I'm better off building something else right from the get go.
