what helps me is doing a DP motion. also characters with crouch/wave dashes have an easier time doing it. Like Mishimas and King. Go play a Mishima real quick in practice mode and learn how to do their wave dash and you'll get it.

another trick is holding down forward and looking if your character starts moving forward. As soon as you see movement from your character hit the while standing. Once you get the timing down you can start doing it with down and down back.

half your life bar is effectively 25% of your total health because of two life bars

That's really true, I agree. It took a lot of practice, to be able to get to the wall whenever capable too. Albeit I had great wall carry
I think that there were too many characters, and quite a few over used teams that had great damage, to consider 50% the average tho. I'm only coming from the standpoint of playing the game, I guess I don't include all characters there. Not a sound argument, but I'm just saying I felt the brunt of the combos
Even though I fought Ageha using Dr.B a BUNCH. Otherwise, I only played the characters everyone else thought was worth using

I know it wasn't something you said, but rage fucked those combos hard too. It was a really crazy game, when you ended up getting rage 3 or 4 times, collectively during a round.
