There is no fault on Tolkien becasue he's the one that largely came up with it by blending his extensive knowledge on european folklore with his own extremely devout Catholicism. The movies are largely whitewashed from this sorta thing, but the christian overtones is almost thick enough to cut with a knife in all of his books besides the hobbit, which was meant to be more of a childrens book. Even warhammer all that souless when you consider it was one of the first. It's like calling Sherlock holmes novels souless because there were generations of copycats later on. Warhammer is alright too, if you look beyond the fantasy veneer. You could just call it Scifi with magic when you pay attention to how the Lore has evolved.

Not so much in games as in other works. A song of Ice and fire, The Chronicals of Narnia, Conan the Barbarian. all this stuff is directly inspired by traditional Tolkien fantasy, but did their own thing with the genre are good examples. (C.S Lewis and Tolkien being BFFs and constantly spitballing ideas off of eachother is a big reason)

It's just there's an assload of uninspired stuff out there too. Dungeons and Dragons being one of the biggest offenders.

Warhammer fantasy is actually pretty deep and varied, you just have to look past the surface. Of course it suffers greatly from not being a singular work by a singular author, leading to plot holes and contradictory lore and just plain bad writing. as far as I know, at least in Perisno, the starvation siege works perfectly fine. when they are starving, out of food, they will start losing units automatically. its slow but noticiable. when they are very low on garrison you either assault or speak with them to surrender.

I know this is an absolutely epic maymay but Pendor is actually incredibly well polished and I really like the fact that it has so few main factions. I don't like when mods end up putting 20 different factions because they all feel samey.

When I play Pendor I actually have that small feeling of wonder running into new enemies, finding secrets, and getting new troops.

Huge variety in weapons, and bandits. Each faction is super different in the same way they are in Native. It's one of the best mods for that imo. I personally like the design of a lot of the armor and weapons but they aren't for everyone of course.

I like the low fantasy aspect, and it's really satisfying getting these super over the top weapons and fighting ridiculous enemies with huge armies. I find that normally you hit that point where you can just roll over any army effortlessly and the game becomes a bit boring but it takes a lot longer to get to that in Pendor.

I don't think there are any mods that have as much polish as PoP.

What is the best troop composition /mbg/? I've found that a force comprised of Rhodok archers and spearmen supplemented by Swadian cavalry and Nord infantry can best other forces nearly twice as large with the right commands and positioning.

There isn't much strategy to native, but there is a bit of tactical ability to be shown. Though it's mostly in using commands and spliting troops different groups to flank, distract or finish off. Terrain is important too. Though this becomes less important as you climb up the toop trees because you'll never really face a force that's composed of mostly the best.
