A least probability to get affliction is to stay as far as it's possible and cast flying shards 5 turns and attack after it. But even so here's 1 of 6 chance to get affliction. Other orders leads to 1 of 3 battle bringing afflictions. Without casting anything here's 50% Shedu dies.

In a multiplayer game, micromanaging the blood slave collection really isn't that bad. It's moving, what, two to six scouts around on most turns until you get to the real late game? Just press collect all slaves on the ones pickin' them up, and deposit all slaves on the ones bringing them back.

I don't have numbers on the big guys breaking free, but remember that they're not your main strength. They're just useful mages. Your big strength is endless hordes of units that are actually quite strong.

can the nations be sorted out based on their early and late game strenght alone?

I can add on to what's there by adding that fear can and does cause morale checks on its own rather than just lower morale (I made a monolith with no magic paths and fear X to test out mechanics) and that the spell Frighten doesn't often make squads rout, so it's possible that they don't take a morale check unless a certain number are effected.

Either way, I don't see and haven't seen anything about the x5 scaling that you mentioned.

There'll be exceptions to every rule, but the following is how I'd generally rank nations as the game goes on.

Earlygame there's a lack of research and few mages. The best nations are ones with strong troops, especially if they're foreign recruit and/or low resource.

Generally that means bless-based nations, as few units can compare to the power of strong sacreds with a good bless.

Midgame the strongest nations are generally those which can field the most magical firepower. Nations which get cheap mages which are valuable in combat are generally strongest here.

Lategame the strongest nations are generally blood, because of the absurd number of powerful summons they can put out.

Nations which can throw around lots of SCs and thugs are also more powerful, as are nations which have troops which take buffs well and nations with wide path diversity.

Ultra lategame is basically exclusive to memegames, but the strongest nations seem to be those which freespawn troops like ermor and lemuria.

Multiple armageddons will have wiped out all population so there's little to no gold or blood slave income, putting these nations on an even footing with more traditional nations in terms of income. On top of that, they get freespawn and will have had plenty of time to reach max research.

Marverni, as played by Rejakor, somewhat fits between a midgame and earlygame nation.

While their troops are not very good, with production you can spam incredible numbers of them due to low resource costs. They also come with one of the cheapest mages which is useful in combat, the S1 stargazer.

Rejakor's guide advocates expanding fast, researching just enough to make stargazers useful, then rushing down people with massed magical firepower and cheap troops.

Hm, alright. As the person who actually cludged it together in the first place, I'd value your thoughts and feedback on why these things are problematic, if you'd be willing to hop on Discord.

My original thoughts were that Dominions maps often lacked these things and that it would allow for better use of things like different map move units and terrain survivals, and that the way the oceans were laid out would allow for more interaction between land and UW nations. I'm sorry to hear it failed, but if you could tell me a bit more about why, I might be able to do something better next time.

They're regular human infantry with average (literal 10s) stats. Dropping like flies is what they do. You can either try to make them more tanky (N9) or make their deaths amount to something (B9). And obviously, you can (and should since you have great mages for that purpose) buff them.

You have three targets fro your bless. Your recruitable sacreds, your se'irim and your mages.

Se'irim love offensive blesses but they can also use N9. Giants love N9 and E minor. Levites want offensive blesses rather than defensive because you wont keep them alive anyway. Mages always want NE.

Decide what you want and use it. W9B9 would be amazing for se'ir and levites for killing power.

Earth blessing isn't exactly the most useful on fatigue-neutral undead but blood, death and nature are fine blesses. Water and to lesser extent astral are also desirable. Given that a bless-focused strategy doesn't rely on freespawn (and subsequently, dominion) that much, I think you should also lower dominion to get rid of misfortune and preferably go for fortune.

However, three major blesses and a minor is a "meta" way to play Ermor.

They don't need a bless to expand, since they've got those armored chariots, but like any trample-troop strat it's easily countered by players. The problem is that if you go for a scales/awake type build, you get to mass your unreliable masters of the way or your D1 ancestor spammers. And then... that's kinda it. If you want to rush a research goal (like a real quick RoS or Ench 5 or whatever) go with an awake sage with at least 6 S and 4 E, you can trash order and prod scales while maxing magic, temp and luck to taste. This gives you a versatile caster and someone who can forge rings if you find the pearls for it.

A fast evo 6 on Yomi can be an amazing time too, you have probably the best RoS battlecaster/army in the game (your Oni can tank the RoS and turn into their secondshape while your Dai Oni RoS casters will laugh that shit off), alterantivley you can take advantage of your versatile D2 mages and make a whole ton of skellyspammers mixed with Soul Vortex casters along with all the other fun shit that goes with that.

If magic ain't your goal, you could take a dual bless asleep pretender, the bless makes your Dai Oni one of the scariest units in the game and will benefit your crazy national summons, don't forget that A4 on your pretender is basically a pre-requisite to summoning Dai Tengu which are among your most powerful summons (elves and caelum have nothing on mass sacred RoS burds).

Lastly you can opt for an erf snek, the bless benefits your units and it helps your expansion,

Just in terms of sheer up-front costs, it was (roughly, including mercs) 3420 vs 4780 gold investment, with 2400 vs 1440 gold losses. In terms of gem costs, you invested 20 Air, 36 Death (there's got to be a better use for those), ~20 Earth, and 2 Fire gems, to my 0 gems. Definitely a decent victory for Caelum, but overall I'm still slightly ahead in terms of investment vs gain, for now at least.

#cleardef will remove all units that spawn there, but following it with #defcom1, #defunit1, etc doesn't replace them. On the other hand, if I don't put in #cleardef but put in new #defcom/unit lines, the province reverts back to its original defenders. The whole thing is a giant anal pain and I don't want to edit the units themselves as theres a lot of nation/province crossover.

Its based on Shadow of mordor so maybe MA because thats earlier. No uruk-hai but one of the orcs in the middle has a crossbow. I tried to get most of the enemy types from the game with a couple of additions just for variety sake.

Balrogs and Dragons would (flavour-wise with dom4's mechanics) be too powerful to be recruitable, but would make great summons or heroes.
However Morgoth still has plenty of orcs, trolls, a dalliance with spiders, wraiths and raukar galore.

Sil's bestiary would be a good source of inspiration, since only a few balrogath are named in the texts.

Well it's been a long time since I've read the silmarillion, but Morgoth's forces can be split into the perverted creations (trolls, orcs, and dragons), spirit-inhabited beasts (spiders, werewolves- possibly wargs as well, but they only appear in LOTR iirc), and then the full-on demons. Sil takes a lot of liberty with the latter and creates elemental creatures of wind, earth, shadow, and fire, in addition to the balrogath.

There are of course the wraiths of the dead, and then there are vampires.
I'm not sure if vampires in the silmarillion are really undead, afaict they are more like humanoid/bat hybrids.

There are enough monsters to fill out a set of recruitables and summons. IMO Contact Balrog should summon a balrog leader (possibly gothmog or lungorthin?) and a squad of balrogs, and maybe an earlier spell to just grab a single balrog.

Most mages default to certain spells when they finish casting first 5 spells you script. Raise Dead/Horde of Skeletons is the most common one for Death 2+ mages. If you want to do buffs or spam shadow blast, do it in first 5 turns. Also, raise dead doesn't necesserily raise YOUR dead, it just summons zombies if there are free corpses in the province.

The reason why Shinuyama is so fucking shit is because the Bakemono troops are so cost inefficient. It doesn't matter how many you recruit, they retreat after a volley or two of arrows/evocations.
If you use them for expansion and they retreat, your expansion is now ruined because they're scattered all over the place.

They're heavily overcosted and not good units save for the Fivefold. They're adequate as Unrest factories if you're fighting upwards and want to disable some farms or whatever, and if you also happen to have like B9 they can almost go even against patrollers, but apart from that, never touch them.

Afterwards the super powerful Pelagia was basically the last nation of their team because they were eaten by RPG.net, and was irrelevant, and subs rekt another team hard and were maybe the second or the third strongest team.

Team where Nick (!) played Lanka (!!) and was one of the first ones to lose (!!!) along with Aran (!!!!). Enough said (!!!!!).

/v/anheim did literally fucking nothing and died to /domg/ backstab and chink birds. Just food for thought: at turn 60 /v/anheim had 2 unforted thrones that allowed us to capture them and cast 3 red seconds without any resistance whatsoever.

RPG.net were literal scrubs. I was surprised they know how to script things. I'll tell you one thing: it was possible to block their 200+ sacreds in a fort with 3 turns of scout attacks. They didn't even buy 1PD.

Clockwork team couldn't do absolutely anything in late-game. Don't know the details, they were basically irrelevant as well.

TROW were competent, and got shit done.

Our will to live waned when we (almost) successfully throne rushed and failed to take a single throne. It was fun while it lasted.

They have more uses. You can add them as masters to a communion to get fanaticism.
Also reinvigoration to extend the life of the slaves (you could do this also with an occultist, but if the c. slaves are not occultists he would kill them raising dead..the fivefold will default to cheapo priest spells when out of blood, so he is harmless).
Other uses are an early word of power to deal with pretenders, or a boosted banishment.

It's difficult for me to put it to words what they are exactly but I think Illwinter has a clear idea about the fluff for each school that is consistently applied. Say, while multiple paths have buff spells, alteration buffs change the physical nature of what is already there (ironskin literally turns the skin of those affected into iron), enchantment applies persistent magic for desired effect (strength of giants is a magical equivalent of powered exoskeleton) and conjuration manipulates entities with their own wills do your bidding (casting summon earthpower requests assistance from spirits of earth). Likewise, construction summons are literally crafted from magical materials, enchantment summons reanimate lifeless entities with persistent magic, conjuration spells call beings from far reaches of the world and convinces them to work for you and blood summons are a business transaction with infernal powers. I can't quite figure out the nature of thaumaturgy spells but it includes mind-altering magic and such like.

However, while most schools have a variety of different kinds of spells, as a broad rule conjuration is summons, alteration is buffs and debuffs, evocation is damage spells, construction is for magical items, enchantment is a mix of buffs, summons and global spells, thaumaturgy has mind-altering magic and blood is a bit of everything from an unique resources.

However, your research goals are entirely dependent on the nation and to large extent dependent on the in-game situation (some nations have first goals that are no-brainers, like MA C'tis going for Enchantment for Horde of Skeletons, Quagmire and Foul Vapors, but many of them don't).

For the cost of Const 8, you could have 6 in three different paths, with research to spare. And most artifacts are bad. Like, actually bad.

For MA Ulm, you want to make use of your amazing earth mages. Alteration for Earth Meld means your units will chop through whatever comes at you, and Destruction and such is good as well. Conjuration for Earth Ellies if you need tramplers, and then later go Evocation for Magma Eruption, which is an obscene spell. Ulm also gets Rain of Stones on a few mages, which is a battlefield clear.

You definitely want some construction, but it's more that you want, say, Construction 6 for infinite Lightless Lanterns so you can super-charge your research.

LA Ulm has a fuckload of cheap S1 mages, so you can do worse than rushing Evo 5 for Stellar Cascades, which does well against most things and makes very efficient use of your research cadre. You will also want Blood at some point, but you can get Blood once your blood economy is already going, since your counts are Blood 0.

I know less about EA nations, so I'll let others advise there.

I haven't played Tír na nÓg but looking at their mages, there's two possible early research strategies that seem apparent to me:

1. Researching spells for your A2 Baobhan Sidhe. Thunder Strike at Evocation-4 is an extremely potent damage spell but it requires A3 to cast. However, that can be solved by researching Storm at Evocation-5 (castable by Tuatha Sorceresses) and then casting Summon Storm Power (Conjuration 2) with Baobhan Sidhes. Cast order is also relevant here, Storm has to be in place before Storm Power can be cast, the casting order is the same as it appears in army deployment screen: for mages that are above the Sorceress, you have to spend a turn casting something else, perhaps Aim or one Lightning Bolt. Going deeper into Conjuration-5 you find another A3 spell, Summon Air elemental, which can be extremely potent during Storms.
2. Thugging with Sidhe Lords. Mistform in Alteration-3 reduces all damage taken to 1 (until the effect is broken by magical weapons or an extremely hard hit, I think that might have been 40 damage). In Construction-4 you get Frost Brand and Vine Shield. Given an appropriate bless (W9 reduces the chance of being hit in melee to almost nil, N9 allows them to regenerate from the damage instances of 1 that go through Mistform, and Earth allows them to continue fighting for longer), a Sidhe Lord with this equipment and scripted to cast Bless and Mistform (possibly air shield as well) can usually carve through dozens of non-elite troops and is cheap enough to shrug off losses if you have bad luck and they die.

In the long run, you want both (after reaching either one of those targets, you probably want to go for the other immediately after), but those should be pretty solid first research goals. I'd lean towards option 1 because in the beginning you probably don't have enough gem income to mass-produce Sidhe Lord thugs.

If it's a 3-player game, Bogarus is a bad choice. Bogarus has an amazing late-game that follows an alright midgame, which in turn follows a garbage early game. A 3-player game, if people are competent, will be decided mostly by the early game, finished up in the mid game, and never really get to the late game.

Go for a nation that's strong in the early game. I'm not saying you have to go full Raghan bless rush, but Bogarus is probably one of the worst choices you could make.

Back in EA, there were two monkey nations: Kailasa and Lanka. Between EA and MA, Kailasa conquered Lanka and the Bandar blood sorcerers were all slain. Then the Celestial Beings all returned to the Celestial Spheres, the Rakshasa returned to their forests, and the White Ones took over, focusing the nation on Astral magic rather than Blood. Elephants are expansion material, they don't stay relevant. Later on, you want to do big communions (and since you have crystal matrix access, you can add in whatever indies suit you) to deal with the enemy while they're bogged down in infinite monkeys. Breaking into blood would go some way towards securing your lategame, but bear in mind that you probably still can't keep up with a serious blood nation, and even if you could, you'd still need some way of making sure the game does go late.

It's not 4X, certainly not a typical one, lacking the typical 4X exploration of the map (there's fog of war but the may layout is known), formal diplomacy mechanics, relevant city-building options, population management, civilian technology research etc. It has more to do with board wargames and their computer versions than games like Civ so "fantasy wargame" would be a more appropriate way to describe it.

Anyhow, Dominions has extraordinary amount of content (3k some units, 80 some factions, ~1k spells), the best worldbuilding in vidya with factions primarily based on history and real-world mythology (Sentient Hindu apes vs Spanish Inquisition vs Zoroastrian birdmen vs undead Romans vs Atlantis), unique mechanics (such as combat being based around deploying and scripting your forces and then being resolved between the turns) with a lot of detail (say, the age of each individual unit is tracked, which is relevant for mages that start out old and a few units like the triarius, but especially when spells causing premature aging are involved) and it works really well in multiplayer (besides its greentext potential, Machiavellian diplomacy unconstrained by formal mechanics and being comparatively far from being figured out, simultaneous turns with PBEM support make it really convenient to play without having to set aside hours at a time to play the entire match in one or few sittings, and free-for-all nature of the matches makes it comparatively stress-free).

For me it's the way the game is basically a sandpit. In Civ V there is pretty much only one way to play, in many other strategy games people have sorted out the underlying systems to such an extent an optimal play strat is devised.

Dominions don't have none of that shit, between some of the most ridiculous RNG in vidya games, the huge roster of units and spells and genuine variety in the way nations play you feel like you can try real off the wall strategies and have a chance of bettering your position through their employment.

My personal favourites;

Mass Orgies to disrupt enemy income before an invasion

Sending your pretender, a 30 foot tall bat-person, into an enemies capital province in the first or second turn of the game, removing them from the game through assassination

Bating an enemy into besieging your castle with few mages inside then teleporting a huge mage stack onto their sieging forces

and so much more. When you know the basic mechanics and begin to look at the tools offered you do note some optimal pathways but you can still fuck around with all sorts of crazyness.

Caelum is down to their capital, Kailasa not too far from that point, and I'm pretty sure Therodos is going to die for good the next turn.

Ulm leaving was a big bummer but in just a few turns they were ravaged by you, Agartha and Marveni and I don't think they actually stood a chance at defeating that alliance (although it would have been better if they didn't just fold in and die). Marveni is a bigger bummer because they were a contender seeing as they stood to capture a lion's share of Ulm as far as I can tell, but I believe Sauromatia, Machaka and Pelagia are the largest players right now and still in the game, so I'm not sure if the game is ruined.
