I was tempted to give the Stabo/Purple Fist matchup to Purple Fist, but Stabo's banking 86 points in the first round, which is he almost guaranteed to win. That crab's gonna be a menace.

On the other hand, a single glancing hit on him is potentially enough to cause lethal bleeding. He's a real glass cannon.

Silver is some of the best material for ammo in the game, man. The damage of arrows and bolts is based entirely on weight, and there are very few materials heavier than silver. But even then I'm not truly confident in my cheetahboy. If he has to go on melee he's in for some serious trouble. Also, surprised no one got the reference for the origin of my character.

I know this is the conventional wisdom, but I think something changed at some point. In 43.05 I've found that silver/copper bolts are always deflected by iron armor while steel bolts punch right through.

I guess the lower one doesn't really count as an entrance until I build the bridge. Soon.
The entry hall on the lower entrance is 17z tall, and the entry arch itself is 14z tall. I've already cast some foundations in the lake, but I've got a little more to do before I can get the bridge started properly.
The upper entrance is a 16z rampway corkscrew in a hollow tube. It ends just above the top of the magma piston. It has canopy over it that can collapse the whole thing into the piston in an emergency, but both entrances are pretty much indefensible if something my military can't handle comes along.

I'll tell you the same thing I always say.
The secret to subconsciously making better-looking forts is to make more specific, less gigantic stockpiles.
Stuff like feeder stockpiles, specific stockpiles for improvable furniture (that are set to give to your jeweler's for example), separate your food by types, separate your finished goods into tradefodder/clothes/rest...
Once it stops being a featureless square, once it gets a little more complex, it feels much better and looks more organic.
Creative stockpiling also opens up gameplay opportunities, for example cooking your seed overflow, actually decorating shit, actually dying clothes, separating things (esp. furniture) into quality levels, having a more organic census of the state of your prime matter, etc
Oh and locked doors. They're a miracle. I lock my wood stockpile when I want to build floors so the materials list doesn't get padded by a shitton of log types. When a dorf goes on a mood I just lock my low value gems and metals so I don't need to forbid shit in stocks.

which adds 9 new races to the game. One of them, the Manat race, has a bunch of castes with differing abilities. One of the castes, the Fleshsmith, is supposed to use poisonous gases in combat, while another, the Face, is supposed to regenerate its limbs by transforming into something for a second or two and then reverting. I tried to add these abilities to these castes, but for some reason they simply refuse to work like they are supposed to. If anyone could download my mod and take a look at these issues and tell me how to fix them, I would greatly appreciate it.

For me it usually goes like this:
1. Inspect embark, decide what general idea I want to follow.
2. Drop a food stockpile and necessary workshops next to the wagon, make tools, chop down trees, build temporary wooden fortifications.
3. Design basic fortress layout and start digging entrance.
4. Move workshops and items to the entrance tunnel (since it's usually 5 tiles wide and several dozens long, everything fits just fine).
5. Gradually move stuff from the entrance tunnel to proper rooms while digging out the fortress.

Of course that's assuming the embark isn't something as fun as terrifying glacier.
Depending on things like aquifers, soil and caverns, you might have to either change the design or invest absurd amounts of time and resources into forcing your vision. Things like caverns completely flooded with several z-levels deep water directly below your main staircase might be quite a pain in the ass if you're not willing to go around the obstacles. In my last fortress dorfs dined and slept in the entrance tunnel for five years until I finally constructed proper chambers.

The other possible approach is to build a small impromptu fortress focused on pure functionality and start moving to a completely new location once you have all necessary industries running.

Alternatively, if all you care about is creating a perfect fort, you can always make your life easier with convenient worldgen settings and dfhack commands like reveal or drain-aquifer. It's a single player game after all and on top of that a one with no winning condition.

You're misinterpretting what the wiki says. A little less than half of all dwarves can wield them normally, and some can even wield them one-handed. It's just a fort mode bug that prevents dwarves from using them.

I'd also like to mention something I should have said earlier, I'm going to be running these fights with morale and fear on. A few gladiators have invested a couple of points into discipline, but nothing drastic. This way, sometimes grievously injured fighters will panic and try to flee, adding flavour to the tourney. If this ends up being less interesting or a negative, I'll remove it from the later rounds.
Also, even though I may not comment, (I want the thread to still be able to talk about regular dwarf fortress things and not focus exclusively on the tourney) I do check the thread periodically, and even though I may not be able to fix things straight away, I try keep an eye out. Also to those anons posting test results, please try and refrain from going overboard, theory-crafting is fun, but try leave a little something to the imagination, especially if other anons express a similar sentiment.

I have been obsessively micromanaging my cooks, trying to make sure that they make roasts containing no more than one repeated ingredient, not letting seeds pile up to the point where there's 200 of any one type, amplifying foods that I know are liked and/or imported by making sure they're cooked with things that are in large stacks, etc. I'm getting close to nothing else done and it's sucking all the fun out of the game. Anyway, you can build taverns, libraries and temples, so mugs and instruments are actually useful now. Adventurers, mercenaries, scholars and bards will visit you because of the previous buildings, and ask to kill critters on the caverns, join your army, do philosophical and scientific research and playing music and reciting poems, and might eventually petition to join your fort as citizens.
Research follows a tech "tree" (more of a forest according to toady), and instruments and all the arts are procedural, but that's all mostly fluff.

For context, my army consists of 40 Dwarves, ranging from competant to adept skill. I have 2 axelords only, i only train them 6 times a year with the min being 8 so 2 can take breaks, meaning very slow training.
Every man is issued a Steel Mail shirt, A steel helm, and a wooden shield. 20 have Steel Axes and 20 have steel warhammers.
2 men, the Captain of the Guard and Militia Commander have full plate-steel (so theyre basically invincible, though the CotG fractured his leg last siege through his steel greaves somehow.
I purpously didnt make them fully armoured knights to make it a bit more difficult and I still decimated.
I only have about 6-10 cage traps and 2 stone fall traps just for fun so I can pit them against a giant I captured.

I'm working on a labyrinth. It's not complete but I just got to do some testing on a poor cook who got caught in some zombifying fog. There's pressure plates that release caged animals, others that trigger spikes, and others that trigger retracting bridges (hopefully sending people down into a pit of spikes). Caverns aren't much different from the surface. The animals are only marginally more dangerous than surface animals on balance. The only thing you have to be concerned about is the higher frequency of FBs compared to surface beasts. Same strategies are effective at defending against them as you would normally employ no matter where you plant your flag.

Yeah, I think this going to end up a much bigger update than world activation. We already know that things like proc-genned civilizing races and the fantasy/horror sliders are going to be features, plus new (potentially physics-defying) geological features, actual deities interacting with civilization, and that's not even the meat of the update. He may even try to get to alternate dimensions.

I dunno, listening to his talks and interviews it seems like he will make magic something that derives from the world an its mythos. So it'll deeply be intertwined with the world --> a lot of modifications to the core game.
He has also spoken about the difficulties with time travel magic and magic that has to do with how the game stores information. I would assume that he will overhaul that aspect as well.
The positive thing about it taking literal decades is that we'll hopefully have supercomputer by then and dwarf fortress will literally be the perfect game.
