Strike the earth!
>>
i think i figured out my stone problem thanks anon

i have a bunch of seeds laying around in my stockpiles, can i just make more barrels for them to be stored in?
>>
>>180902293
Make bags, then they'll put seeds in the bags and the bags into barrels.
>>
>carve a shitty spiky ball out of one log
>trade it for an entire caravan's worth of food
>throw it all together and roast it into a shitty caked mess of burnt horse milk biscuits
>buy out the rest of the entire caravan with it
Pretty ridiculous
>>
>>180902293
>>180902363
As Anon said, you need to make bags, which can be tricky because getting cloth on your own involves a multiple step process of growing and refining pig tail plants. Usually what you want to do is buy cloth sheets from caravans, they sell them rather cheap, and leather even cheaper for some reason.
Word of advice: disable barrels in your seed stockpile. They cause job cancellation spam and are in general wasted barrels.
>>
jesus christ my third migrant wave was like 18 of these fuckers. what do i do with all these guys
>>
why are some of the bolts i made forbidden by default?
>>
>>180903152

also i have bolts and quivers but its saying my ranger cant hunt because no ammunition?
>>
I just bisected a kobold with one swing of my great axe. It didn't die straight away and one of my followers crushed its head stealing my epic kill.

Fuck you.
>>
>>180903152
They may be bolts that you made but, are you sure they weren't used already? If they were used and you haven't set the order to claim used ammunition yet then they will become forbidden upon being used.
>>
>>180903295
Hunting is pretty fucky since the crossbow nerf, what's happening there is that your hunter is emptying all 20 bolts in his quiver, realizing he has no more ammo, and giving up complete with a confusing error. There's really nothing that can be done, this will happen even with good quality bolts. Assigning him a hunting dog can help but the dog won't last very long.
Another problem here is that the animal can bleed out while the hunter is gone, and the hunter won't retrieve the corpse in that case. Press [o]-[r]-[o] to make your dorfs gather outside refuse, they will now go pick up the perfectly good elk corpse and haul it to the corpse stockpile, hopefully in range of a butchers shop (you may need to queue them to butcher manually)
>>
>>180903419

ah that would be it i think.

i wonder why my rangers arent hunting though due to lack of ammunition?
>>
>>180903413
If it was actually bisected then it wasn't still alive. There are a few kinds of damage that will kill a creature immediately 100% of the time, and that's one of them.
>>
>>180903679
It flew in two seperate bits. What's that if not bisected?
>>
>>180903592
Well if it might be the order thing then go ahead and [o] [F] to show the forbid orders and change the ammunition one to claim instead of forbid, which is on by default for some reason and it took me 2 years to figure that one out. Same problem, kept mass producing bolts but, my hunters kept wining for ammo.
>>
>>180903732
Clipping your toenails separates you into two bits.
>>
>>180903750

boom got it thanks anon fuck i keep forgetting about that menu

Rend means to tear into pieces, which is fine more or less if each attack with that weapon does sever something, but even then, it doesn't really fit the bill.

You had better be feeling intense shame right now.

Bugs

Currently, as of v0.42.04, goblin ambushes do not happen due to it being removed from the raw. Sieges still do occur after your fortress exceeds the population of 80 though.

what.
>>
>>180906784
>>180906890
You know what i want? Tick based progression in dialogs, so you could interrupt people halfway by killing them, for example. Shouldn't be too hard to code i think.

Not sure what to say about that then, anon. Military is pretty confusing. I'd recommend looking up a guide to using the ui.
>>
>>180908936
Doesn't seem like it, my first fort lasted about 15 years, most of it with a pretty poor military and it didn't get a single goblin ambush.

Reposting for the people who haven't seen it yet. It looks like most people (the 3 who replied to me last thread), are all for a new tournament, so I'll be opening the registrations soon and start accepting combatants once I'm all ready. As for the concerns from last time, I'll be prolonging the registration period to one week, and spreading the fights over several weeks in order to not clog up the general. In addition, I'm allowing humans the same amount of points as the rest of the standard races (elves/goblins/dwarves). I'm also considering buffing armour and armour user, as of right now they are more expensive to equip and use efficiently over just spamming mastery of one kind of weapon and dodging.

I'm also toying with the idea of having group battles, 2v2, 3v3 and the like. Gladiators could team up and fight together, against other gladiators, monsters, or just hordes of wild beats. As always, feedback is appreciated, and if you want to send me a direct message, my email is [email protected]
Here's the link to the google doc with more information: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Xaf7ze5dgC1L4h7Y8flaG6meHZtqiuVj7dojwvQx1yc/edit#gid=1311675782

Currently, the schedule will probably go as follows:
>1st week for registration period and possible balancing
>2nd week for the first round of eliminations
>3rd week for the second round and semifinals
>4th week for the battle royale and finals
>>
>>180909919
Is submitting multiple fighters allowed?
>>
>>180911893
If you want to submit multiple fighters I'll keep them on the backburner, so that if we don't get a full roster of fighters from different managers they can participate. I'm hoping that this time though we won't have managers with multiple fighters.

Any other 40d players in the thread? I'm gunna give it a go for the first time and looking for some tips. As far as I'm aware there were no cavern layers and it didn't have many z-lvls. Any other major features I should be aware of?

I'm pretty much assuming that all the modern DF comforts like Therapist and DFhack didn't exist for it. Will modern tilesets still port over to it fine? I'm thinking Myne or CLA or something maybe.

After spending all day generating worlds, I finally got one with what I wanted, a volcano next to a taiga within reach of goblins.

I can't tell how I should place my embark to best have both the taiga and the volcano, though. I'm planning on having an above-ground fort in the Taiga, bringing magma from the volcano to play with. How bad would my framerate be affected if I increased the embark size?

I've heavily reduced the cost of armour user, and for now that's all I think I'll do to change things up. Armour itself can be useful, but the added expense of leveling up armour user has made it less effective than dodging. Now the total cost for max armour-user is 119.

I mean sure, if you want. However, no re-using of previous combatants, they are all decidedly dead (except for the two survivors). You could make a new guy with the same stats and equipment as a previous gladiator as long as you fluff them as someone else, I just personally think trying something new each time might be more fun.

I also forgot to mention, each fighter can have their own little piece of lore or description, and a theme song if you so wish. Just link the theme song whenever you send me your character details, either over e-mail or by /dfg/

that would actually be pretty handy.

any trapdoor can be used to seal off hell at will, since they can't be destroyed from below. however, they can still be destroyed from ABOVE by some random cave animal who happens to get near them.

this isn't the case with artifact trapdoors. they are completely safe from ALL directions.

Ambushing isn't a raw-defined behavior. The [AMBUSHER] tag causes squads that arrive during a siege to enter the map hidden, like elves do. Elves have that tag, and it functions properly for their sieges. Goblins have never had that tag. If the wiki (still) suggests otherwise then it's (still) wrong.

Neat, but some of the stats on that one are a bit off, like I mentioned earlier, humans have 220 points and armour user was made a lot cheaper.

>>180948349
I think due to their powerful weapon potential, picks will be made as expensive as a regular dwarf weapon. so 20 points. They have indeed been modded to work with miscellaneous user skill, so just put your points there. However, seeing as they'd be so cheap to level up, I'm considering doubling the points required in misc skill purely for picks, to balance them out. Does this seem reasonable to you?

>>180953408
Sure, they don't have any outrageous advantages like certain other animal men, so you're fine with 220.

>>180955115

>I'm considering doubling the points required in misc skill purely for picks
That would unfairly penalize anyone who wanted to use a nonstandard weapon, and also give extra advantage to pick users who also use a heavy shield since they'll be getting double offensive value out of their primary weapon skill. Why not just make picks use the axe skill instead? It would give them the same point value you were aiming for anyway and makes sense from a mechanical perspective.
>>
>>180971096
I think he means if you're using a pick, your misc cost is doubled, anyone using an actual miscellaneous item will use the normal cost. The only people affect would be those using a pick and a misc weapon dual wielding?
>>
i have planned this rather poorly, for the second time
>>
>>180969247
Putting them at the same misc progression as sword/hammer/etc seems fair, the 5/10/15/etc steps.

Going with that assumption:
The Gladiatrix
Female (Bearded!) Dwarf
>skilled dodger 50 50
>prof miner 75 125
>novice wrestler 4 129
>novice armor 2 131
>steel pick 80 211
>elf leather high boots 5 216
>elf leather gloves 4 220
>>
>>180971531
He might mean that. The wording is ambiguous enough that either interpretation is correct. Shield bashes use misc object, though, so that's still added offensive value on a skill whose cost is being increased to compensate for its OPness. Either way I think assigning it an already cost-correct weapon skill is a better solution.

>>
>>180958353
>you lick the cheetah leather loincloth

>>
>>180972394
People who are using shields but aren't using misc objects aren't really going to invest in it no matter how cheap it is to help with bashes, and people using misc objects and shields could do with the help if previous tournaments are anything to go by. Maybe it'll help make more unique fighters too.

The obsidian crust itself is actually quite weak, and breaks off pretty easily under blows so I'll leave the [nopain] tag as a countermeasure to the brittleness, and allow you the full points of a human. Based on the tests it seems to be pretty balanced.

>>181008391
Cloth has no base modifier value, only the initial cost of the item. For shirts/trousers the cost is 10, for bigger things like robes that cover more, the price is the same as a cloak. I suppose I should add that in.

>>181008417
Rhino men are fugging huge, 1,535,000, so you'll only get 50 points.

You're right about that, but I like the uniqueness of his character and the fact he went for an optimised (fist fighter) character, so I'm inclined to be a bit more lenient.

>>180984017
Actually, thinking more on it, I might lower the points of your gorilla man to 180, seeing as the harp seal guy would be a bit smaller and have the same points. I know you're concerned about your fighters chances but he's actually a very legitimate threat based on my tests

>>181017594
Picks have been modded to use the misc skill, because mining isn't actually a skill in the arena. However, to compensate for their strengths as a weapon, they cost the same as an axe/whip, so double the skill cost. If you want to be skilled in your misc user, you'll have to invest 60 points.
You also made me realise I made a mistake, cloth should be at a x0.25 modifier, because it's weaker than leather in terms of protection, but is still better than being naked. So for your shirt+pants you should have 2.5+2.5 = 5 points. I fixed the doc and made it clearer.

>>181018130

So did any major changes happen in rules after the first tourney? Tourney 1 struck a good balance, although the (arguably) most popular fighter in it was Coldsteel the hedgehog man, who seemed an unstoppably edgy murder machine until he faced Sten in the final. Tourney 2 was played a lot straighter (but gayer) with some uncomfortably anime drama storylines emerging between contestants. Also, RIP IWRLIH.
Tourney 3 looks like it's gonna be a lot of fun, zanier than either of the predecessors, which is an improvement on the last one, in my book. I still haven't entered a fighter, I'm trying to think of something that fits the mood.

I'm interested in the idea, a fighting duo of man and beast sounds pretty fun. I've done a few fights, and solo gladiators actually tend to do pretty well against an armed but unskilled duo, as long as they kill/incapacitate one guy rather quickly. I like your concept a lot, so I'll allow it and give you 50 points to the spend on the human, none for the wolf. I eagerly await your gladiator.

Iron men being hollow, they're actually far more fragile than one would expect, and the gas they contain isn't all that dangerous. I'm going to remove the [NOSTUN] and [NOEXERT] tags, but let your dude keep [NOPAIN]. You can keep 220 points, just be aware your Juggernaut is actually pretty squishy. IIRC Iron men are pretty weak. they're basic a thin layer of iron filled with gas and even a peasant can punch them to death. The problem with them is that they can breath out their gases, releasing a syndrome called "Iron Man cough", wich causes its victims to cough up blood but nothing too serious or life-threatening.

I'd also like to point out that the tourney was originally planned to be limited to 16 fighters, but seeing as we're already halfway through the week and there are more than 16 gladiators (some in the process of being completed) I might be open to having a 32 fighter tournament. If we don't reach 32 fighters by monday I guess the rejected gladiators will have first pick in the next tourney if it ever happens

Large Steel Dagger - 64 (266)
Talented Knife User - 75 (191)

I can make them spawn in the arena with a bit of tweaking, but the bigger problem is they're much more dangerous than magma men or iron men. Their bodies are actually much tougher than normal, and basic attacks don't do anything except glance away. I'd definitely remove the tags that make them op, same as the other guys, but I'd also have to dock points to make them more balanced. Either that, or I forbid items. In that case, I'll be more lenient. You can keep the |NOPAIN] tag, just like the other x-men, but I'll remove the other stuff and dock your points to 180. Seeing as you have a sort of natural armour, being able to invest 180 points into (almost) pure skill, added with the no pain thing, and you've got a strong contender to be a hand to hand fighter who can beat an armed warrior, if you don't take too many hits before you can take their weapon.

New version of ironman, old version had some odd things in it because i was way to tired while doing tests with it.
If you remove NOEXERT from him thought he will be practically useless because iron mans are heavy as fuck (normal movement speed of ironman is 0,5) Their outer layer is much weaker than obsidian layer of magma man.
They can often lose fist fight vs human. And unskilled unarmed ironman vs unskilled unarmed magma man, the magma man had 100% winrate in 20 tests.

So please consider to not remove NOEXERT

The game is too easy now, mainly because tantrum spirals got removed and you'll rarely be harassed by goblins unless you embark right next to a tower. Goblin Pedophiles and Kobold Thieves aren't really a thing anymore either, but the upcoming update (july, august at latest) is gunna add people seeking out and stealing artifacts to the world.

Honestly, you're probably better off going back to an old version or installing shit like Masterwork if you want more of a challenge in fort mode, Toady's kind of dumbing it down so he can make Adventure mode cooler. Maybe check back in 5 years when we have Magic and when the Economy is brought back.

>>181118609
They are indeed allowed. Tunics and robes covering a fair bit of skin cost as much as a cloak, so a base of 15 with a 0.5 leather modifier, meaning 7.5. Trousers would have a base cost of 10, apply the leather modifier, leaving 5. Keep in mind regular clothing doesn't protect nearly as much as even leather armour.

try embarking somewhere hilly, like on a volcano. If you're near rivers, low valleys, the coast or basins you'll get sedimentary ores like iron n shit instead.

Usually the noob mistake is people embark on volcanos all the time and then bitch that they never get iron, so just do that.

Was providing context for upcoming changes as we're getting close to the range Toady was shooting for.

Ok I didn't want to ask for help with df but my fortress has gotten out of hand.
I wanted to make an above ground bridge-castle with an extensive below ground fort but I was attacked by undead and now they're inside my above ground castle while my dwarves work in a temp fortress. Any ideas on getting them out?
I need to do it quickly because I rely on caravans for my supply of ale and I'm running out fairly quickly.
>Pic related is the wooden undead-filled fort with a ballista pointed at it. This is my first idea, to open a 3 wide hole and shoot arrows through it hoping to eventually hit some zombies.

I'm not so sure about elves being superior to dwarves, atleast not all situations.

I've done some tests some time ago where I made each major race (humans, dwarves and elves) fight against the others, here are the results: https://pastebin.com/rjTeKee1

For the dwarf vs elf part I made one hundred dwarves and one hundred elves fight 18 times, each time with different skills and/or equipment. Dwarves won 11 times while the elves won 5 times and there was a draw in 2 sets.

From what I saw it seems that the elves do better in fights with weapons and no skills, while dwarves perform much better in fights where both opponents are wearing armor, and seem to be generally better than elves.

If you want to find the results quickly just use ctrl+f and search for dwarf vs elf and you will find them.
>>
>>181139172
Another thing I want to add, I assume the reason why dwarves perform better against armor is because of their higher strength, which makes it more easy for them to cause wounds through armor, as for elves I think they do better in fights with weapons with weapons and no skills and armor because of their higher agility, which makes them better dodgers, I think. This combined with the dwarves low agility makes the elves less likely to get hit, and in fights with no armor one hit is all you need to end a fight.

Also, skills seem to act as a kind of equalizer, the effects that higher attributes produce seem to be lessened in fights where both fighter are highly skilled.

>>
>>181141058
Once I learned how to use macros correctly and using the arena layout that comfyanon (comfybro? I don't remember actually remember his name) made, not that long.

I also made the same tests with some of the small races, kobolds, gnomes and gremlins, and I was also in the process of making them with minotaurs, trolls, yetis and sasquatch, but I stopped before finishing it.

That was some time ago, I should finish it once I'm not busy anymore.

Your points are all off friend, competent shield user would cost 24 not 12. Grand master dodger would cost you 525 not 70.

I've finished the first floor of one of the office towers (the ground level is only pillars), and the ground floor of one of the flat buildings is nearing completion.

One thing that worries me is that there isn't any sand on the embark. Hopefully I can find some in the caverns. I'm gonna need a lot of it: the office towers earh have 108 window panels per floor, and the flat blocks each have 36 window panels per floor.

This would work as a gladiator, right? Assuming there's still space, been away from the general a while.

Trihardin McLargeHuge
Race: Human

Points left: 220
Proficient Fighter - 45
Proficient Striker - 60
Talented Dodger - 105
Cloth Pants - 10

DEEP LORE: Weapons are a crutch, armour is a crutch. He believes if you just git gud and you can out skill any opponent with your bare fists and talent. Knows that if he dies, he deserves it for not trying hard enough. Will brag endlessly over any wins.

I'm curious what the hell a .veg is, I read it and was like "GO FAST VEGETA" but I have that brain thing so here's my latest insanity: hercules hooks looked like a neat idea but I hate buying things which I can just make, so I prototyped a few until I hit the bottom design. Yeah

But what if there is foul play
>>
So i made a marksdwarves tower (with fortifications and a roof) and then sent my marksdwarf squad up there to snipe an ogre prick who was keeping my dwarves locked inside in terror. When i ordered them to station, they just stood around doing nothing. When i ordered them to kill it, it said he was unreachable. What the fuck? How do i get them to kill it? Did they just not see him? He was only like 10 or 15 tiles away.
>>
>>181164454
Max stop spouting nonsense goddamit.
>>
>>181165431
Kill orders require a walkable path to the target or LoS for ranged units (otherwizlse they treat it like a melee kill order and look for a path). If they weren't shooting at it when stationed in the tower or when ordered to kill it, then they can't see it or have no ammo. Just send a melee dwarf to handle it.

Ulric vs Dakudos

Well atleast he isn't fighting someone with a blunt weapon. But even though he is fully covered by armor, Dakudos' skill combined with his dwarf strength probably means that he could easily damage Ulric through armor, so unless Ulric disables him quickly , he will be in danger.

Is there a contestant that could possibly EVEN TOUCH Urist McNudist? Let alone defeat him. And I’m not talking about armored Urist McNudist. I’m not talking about naked Urist McNudist freed from restraints of clothing and armor either. Hell, I’m not even talking about naked Urist McNudist freed from restraints of clothing and armor with his magnificent beard imposed by FCC regulations. I’m talking about naked Urist McNudist freed from restraints of clothing and armor who is as nimble (and naked) as an elven lass noticing orc patrol while bathing, has a magnificent beard imposed by FCC regulations that can sense even the most subtle air currents and carries an iron sword because his mom told him to.
