Firendly reminder that dodging matches against characters or players you dislike fighting is equivalent to skipping a test in college, you still have to figure out the matchup at some point but when you skip it you condition your brain to believe the problem is worse than it really is, hampering your progress in the long run

Never run from fights. Never deny anyone the chance to rematch you, be it winquitting or lossquitting. Even if you dislike the matchup strongly and think you won't learn anything from it because the enemy character is "dishonest" or "unga bunga", use that time to experiment. Try sidesteps and backdashes where you previously wouldn't, try interrupting strings you never tried to before, try to figure out how and when you can outplay the opponent during the match, don't skip that part just because you're going to go into training mode later. Challenge yourself.

Sex is irrelevant, but it's not ALL about playstyle either. If it's a female character them being cute/sexy might be a factor, if it's a male character them being cool looking might be a factor. For example Asuka is ok to play but her design is definitely a major reason I play her. Kazuya's playstyle isn't my favourite but I think he looks cool. On the other hand I enjoy Jack's playstyle to some degree but he looks so retarded I don't want to play him. I like how impactful Bryan's moves feel but I'm pretty "eh" on his look.

So it's a mix of visual design and playstyle. Both have to be on point.

As a former Yoshi main I kind of agree that playing Yoshi only makes you learn to play Yoshi, not Tekken in general. But you kind of have to be as unpredictable as possible because that's the only way to win against decent players. It still takes a lot of practice and character knowledge to do I think. It can be fun but you need to work so hard for mediocre results that I eventually just decided to learn a more straightforward character.

Had my first ragequitter in ranked yesterday. Really wish Steam would let you see all recent players like in other games instead of only able to choose the profile option after a match. Still got my perfect and saved myself from demotion at least

Here are a few tips.

1. Find your launchers. Memorize a basic string that works with 70% of them, and another string that works with the other 30%. You should have about 7 total launchers (after ground bounces and air launches) and only 2 real combos. Try and keep them over 55 damage.

2. Hold back when you're get knocked on your ass. If you see them swinging for your feet, hold down-back after your character starts to move. This is the safest wake-up option, and is entirely defensive. The only other thing they can do is grab you, in which you just have to try and break it. This is also uncommon for most players to do (until they notice you're not breaking throws).

3. Watch for lows. Just visually watch for the ones with a long wind up. Memorize them mid-match. If you can block them, you can almost always counter with a hopkick (uf4) into one of your basic combos. After knocking them down, follow up with mid attacks, preferably anything in a string or that has homing. Easy damage.

There you go. That alone will get you to Mentor / Expert.

Holding back just makes your character get up and away. Holding down back after starting to move will just guard low instead of high. If you don't see the low animation, don't guard your legs. For everything else, its basically just better to take the damage than eat the launcher. *Most* low launchers sit around 20-27 frames, making them more than easy enough to react to if you've seen it before.

Use a fast low and a slow damaging low to make them duck

Use df1 or a bigger mid to catch them ducking

Use a universal low damage combo that works on all launchers

I suspect this isn't true, Like I said, you should wind up with somewhere around 6-10 different starters. The idea is to make them block shit that isn't those, then land them. Usually about 4 of 6 or 7 of 10 of your starters are off counter hits. Find them. Make them block jabs and shit then throw out your starters occasionally.

And the very, very best way to land ANYTHING is to make them wiff an attack / string. Always.

This game would be so much better if they normalized backdashing and just swallowed their pride and ignored crying asians

His d4 / shoryu game is more or less his entire game plan though. Once you memorize the d4 animation and block it, you can punish him all day long with a hopkick / equally fast launcher. After you take that out of his gameplan, he becomes a lot easier to deal with. He's more about punishing stupid players for doing stupid things than he is actually being troublesome, bar extremely good players who will SS you all day long and d4 -> combo punish you every time you press 1.

You still have to know the universal solutions to situations to determine whether you should use your unique options or just sidestep/block/parry like everyone else for optimal play. Sure if you panic spin, flash, etc then I guess that's a bad habit, but that just shows you don't know the matchup in the first place.

"Dropping" combos for setplay is something you don't have to worry about with other characters because they get enough mileage out of their combos regardless of taking oki or not (or get damage AND oki regardless). If anything it's just extra work from Yoshi that you simply don't need to worry about, you're not going to suddenly start ending combos early and doing setplay out of habit on everyone else.

Right, I was just thinking if you try to look at situations with the idea of getting the most out of it you still have to explore the universal options as well as Yoshi's unique options and if you do that surely you won't get bad habits. It simply means when you try to play a more standard character you only have to look at a fraction of the amount of options each time. I'm just getting into Yoshi and T7 but I'm fairly experienced at learning other fighting games and trying to make sure I'm self conscious about my decisions so I appreciate the insight.
