Yeah It's a total conversion. Shoots the time forward to a post x-com defeat. You'll be spending your time as a Uber Mutant Female Pirates. It is pretty ridiculous, but fun. Certainly worth a shot, though I feel like it's issues have only grown since I last played it.

Doubtful, though one can hope. desu, if I ever go back and play it, I'll probably just load up an older version. Simpler times when you just raided ships with your large but poorly equipped crew. Weather, the small crews, monster hunts, zombie ufos, bleh. It's all so tedious and decidedly not fun. Even the temple raid grind on my nerves.

I've got another one now and it's fucking nuts. I don't even have magnetic weapons yet and there are 3 mechs, 2 sectoids and 2 officers. I have 12 turns to get across the map and I don't start in concealment. Is it better to just ignore them for a while? Also not being able to just emergency evac without the VIP makes it even more difficult.

I really wouldn't dismiss it like that. Sure it's got some exploitation film flavor, but it's a really good total conversion with a lot of good fairly well balanced options at most stages of the campaign.

I would say it is hands down better than the original campaign, and the best X(-)COM game out there.

I haven't played since .99C though.

The thing I have the most problem with is that he now limits you to two branches of psionics, and the campaign is so long it means you're probably only going to see half of that content. I get that it's for balance and stuff, but that annoys me - couldn't that be balanced another way?

Rangers get an early skill that's lets them start every mission in concealment, and if your squad is already in concealment, they won't break concealment when the rest of the squad does.

In LW2 early game you deploy 4-6 soldiers per mission a lot of the time. Mid to late game 6-8, occasionally ten and rarely 12.

Fatigue is replaced with infiltration, there's a sliding scale of enemy activity (pod/ayy numbers) and the more you infiltrate, the less enemies there are. But after 100% infiltration there are diminishing returns, so often there's little point in going past 100. Each additional soldier increases infiltration time, but this can be mitigated by equipment or cumulative officer bonuses.

If for some reason you needed to get someone back for an important mission, you can abort the infiltration and the only thing it costs you is time until the mission expires.

No fatigue in Long War 2 - instead most missions require you to infiltrate a squad ahead of time (although they only get a set amount of time to infiltrate in) and the % infiltration that they get to dictates how hard things will be you.

You'll probably average at about 3 - 4 active squads at a time, depending on progress into the game.

I am not actually sure how the infiltration mechanic is going to play well with the fact that War of the Chosen is introducing its own fatigue mechanic, though

I should note that there's a squad mechanic that does cut down on the micro if you often deploy the same soldiers with each other. Helps a lot when you just want to stick with your A team for a given mission.

But gameplay wise, yeah, its a chore that doesn't really feel like it has much of a pay off. They try too hard with "lets make achieving anything like having the player sandpaper their own balls" and so you don't end up having all that much fun.

This is why I tend to rush the skulljack missions ASAP so that I don't have to rely on RNG for officer/codex to spawn to advance Golden Path.

Although I did manage to skulljack codex on the Psigate mission on my last campaign. Did it by disabling the fuck out of it with flashbang/sting grenades while dealing with the rest of the enemies first.

I just bought the digital deluxe version of this game, played 3 hours and did a TON of character customization. I even made fully fledged out Bio's for certain soldiers. I save & quit the game and come back only to find that everything I did was undone, even on the backup save file, everything was reverted back to the way it originally was, the cosmetic changes, the biography's..all gone. I'm playing on the steam version. Can anyone help me with this? How do I fix this?

Okay I got out of that without a scratch otherwise, but what makes me mad is that the outsider gets a free turn on me because it activated on the alien's turn. I used a motion tracker earlier, and while it didn't get the back of the UFO it did show me the front part, which only had a couple of sectoids I had dealt with earlier and the outsider, so it seems the sectoids just happened to patrol into me from the other side of the UFO or I set off that hunt mode bullshit with the two earlier sectoids.

I mean I got +20 meld so it's not like I played that mission at a loss in terms of money, but it still stings to lose a rookie for no good reason.

It's pretty fun so far but I feel like the tutorial missed a lot of important stuff. The environment destruction is the best part so far. I killed a sniper in the attic of a 3-story house by putting my whole squad in the ground floor and ordering them all to fire at the footsteps they could hear. Medkits aren't terribly useful in the early or late game, since either you'll die with one hit or you're so powerful you start facerolling everything. But in the midgame, once you're about equal with the aliens, having a dedicated medic character in your squad can be a lifesafer.

It's also very important to have one along for Retaliation missions, to cure Chryssalid poison.

Does anyone know the formula for how hacking works? Everything I search for just comes up with people savescumming, and thinking seeds = broken game. You just get used to it. You play the entire game worrying about LoS, sound range, what cover is facing what direction, if this pod is isolated enough. The more scouting you have the better. You also need to use sound ques constantly. You can even do things like start a hack on a terminal, then cancel it so the enemies turn around to look at it, and you can hear them.

Alien Rulers adds challenge ayy boss fights that will likely fuck you up if you're new to the game. It also comes with new armors and weapons.

I meant Trial By Fire, I'm pretty sure resistance doesn't level up like that. I have a Lead By Example + Trial By Fire sharpshooter that is usually in a squad with a higher rank officer, but if I wanted to I could run grind missions with newbies, and have them get an aim buff.

Smash and grab tends to be terrible for DFA snipers simply because you start outside of the buildings 99% of the time. They're great for most objective missions, ESPECIALLY once you get spidersuits. Grapple is a free action, allowing re-positioning without losing your ability to shoot.

They're mostly for high priority target removal. If you're playing with "Not Created Equal" that can cause you to get some shitty snipers, but overall they aren't as consistent as unmodded/LW1 simply because they can't 1 shot alot of things. Shotguns outscale the fuck out of Swords and end up getting reaction fire BULLSHIT that can take out entire pods. Swords are useful only early game in the base game, hacking doesn't scale so by the time you've got T3 Gremlins you'll have 100% chance on 99% of hacks.

I think it carries your distance over, even if it's not intentional I'd make use of it.

I do the same thing with disoriented units and revival protocol, spend the actions on reloads/pot shots/movement and then give them a full two normal actions by removing disorient.

If you ask me, what they should do for XCOM 3 is take all the customization, QOL, and modding support from XCOM 2 and apply it to a remake of EU. Basically do the Alien invasion of Earth again, but make it way better and grander in scale. Multiple bases and skyrangers, more dynamic events and branching story paths, etc. I feel like atmosphere and setting in general is better in the initial invasion phase. Or I at least think they should do this down the line at some point, I just enjoy the "unknown" aspect of XCOM much better than what we got with XCOM 2.

Shinobis. Lone Wolf, Combatives, Low Profile, Hard Target, and Evasive. It's not so much about being the best tank, but they get a defensive option every single level initially, they don't have to have good aim or invest in swords to be useful, and you can put heavy weapons on them for a 2nd pod shredstorm cannon since they've got phantom. Late game you want an untouchable assault, but this is for early on.

Admitted, it's my first X2 playthrough (Commander), but I started in New Arctic with Ayylien Facilities popping up in Australia, South Africa and Eastern US.
I also only got the possibility to obtain a single Engineer for the longest time, who was stuck in my AWC 24/7 just to keep my soldiers healthy.
If I hadn't savescummed to keep my best soldiers alive I could never have freed up my Engineer to do any excavating and even then just managed to make contact with the first area with a Facility as the Doomsday countdown already began.
I'm sure it's basically git gud, but I had felt pretty confident in strategy games so far and now I feel like a complete scrub.

Xcom 2 is pretty hard so the fact that you've survived this long on commander is pretty good for your first playthrough, but yeah it's mostly just a case of git gud, the important thing you should be doing right now is just trying to stop the ayys from completing the Avatar Project probably, so try to expand and make contacts, and just complete objectives, some of them also drop down the doomsday progress.

They revealed a LOT before XCOM 2 came out and I think it kinda detracted from the experience of playing the game for the first time, so I can relate. Even though I'll still read/watch any info that comes out.

Vanilla or modded? I've heard arguments for both in vanilla. People seem to think they are both very strong. My gut goes to damage, but I can't ignore players who have cleared impossible and think that restoration is better.
Thinking more about it, a good argument for restoration is that grenadiers already have your AOE damage covered, and once you get to lategame, your soldiers can actually take hits so healing them is actually feasible, and restoration is an action efficient ability which is always good.

Vanilla, picked it up on ps4. I'm leaning towards resto for the reasons you mentioned. My grenadiers are doing a top notch AoE job so far, I might invest an an extra emp grenade so I still have a bit of a robot option. On my first HQ mission it was the same for me.

Now, I usually take a 2 snipers with me, a shinobi, support squad and set up camp on a hill outside of the base and siege them.

Its hilarious watching advent taking 3 turns reaching you while you kill at least 2 soldiers of them every turn.

A couple Rapid Reaction rangers on a hill, a Shinobi to scout out pods, a Sniper to draw them in, a Gunner and a Grenadier to take out any cover they might come at, maybe a Technical if you're feeling it, withan Assault to mop up; regional HQs just fall over that way.

If I was going to bring two snipers, though, I'd bring a left-tree sniper and a full middle-tree sniper. Currently my preference for one is middle-tree, since the support holo with Mk.III holotargeter is pretty much mandatory in late game.

The thing is that LW2 has the pods gravitate towards you as you fight with the noise mechanic, so overwatch camping with no timers is even stronger than in X1 imo because you can draw out all the pods. Yellow alert can be an issue though.

Well, I finished Xcom2 with timers once so on my LW2 ironman run I practically disabled them by putting them on 50.

Its just no fun to me when there is so much on stake and I can lose half a squad by a simple mistake (i.e. triggering an enemy pod when my last soldier who went into position)

When you move you soldiers out of sight of all aliens, the AI freaks out and makes dumb/weird moves because the AI can't remember where your soldiers last were.
This can be exploited to have the AI make unforced errors like flanking themselves or bunching up for explosive. Also they can't shoot what they can't see.
A standard tactic in XCOM 1, not so much in X2 because of too many windows and objectives that force you to advance constantly.
