It is but you'll get used to it. Make sure to roll left and rudder right when turning fast. Also if you lower the collective you get up 450 in a dive and not have to worry about rotor collision.

Strike Fighters 2 is a good go-to for that sort of thing.
I would insist that on balance the best modern jet simugame. DCS feels more like a series of tech-demos and betas and Falcon 4 is amazing at the one thing it does, which is simulate the F-16. Okay, okay, and an entire war. But only for the purposes of giving the F-16 something to do. SF2 by comparison manages diversity of hardware and theaters, and has that cool mercenary mode thing, albeit without being as in-depth as Falcon is for the Falcon or DCS is for the 4 planes you can buy for it at the price of a full game each.

Generally, No.

What you can do is find an airline flight the end of the day, punch it into that airlines flight tracking website, then click "where is this airplane coming from" a bunch of times. You'll then find out where the aircraft is going all day. However, you won't be able to see when crews are swapping, or where they're swapping from. That sort of information is not public.
probably because nobody ever cared other than crews and the company, and it changes very frequently

Anyone still play BMS? I've been eyeballing Falcon 4.0 on Steam, but it's apparently nigh-unplayable in vanilla form
>>
>>180510023
sole purpose for it being on steam is so you can legally buy it for BMS
>>
>>180510023
I do, but /simg/ hates almost everything about BMS.

We pretend we like it on paper but when it comes to actually trying to play a campaign we do dumb retard shit, skip briefings, don't bother setting up missions correctly, half the players don't even know how to set up and use the weapons they start with, use total meme loadouts and then complain when we lose all planes on the first day of a campaign. We then get bored and stop playing it for a while.

But don't point this out, you'll be branded an autist if you try to point out that the game must be taken seriously if you want to play it properly.
>>
>>180510685
This is honestly true.
On top of all that they never do cold starts. Every mission begins on the runway, and they exit as soon as they are out of ammo.

I'm playing a BMS campaign at the moment. I'd say BMS 3.33 feels like its a going concern at the moment. I admit I don't ramp start very often and I'm still struggling a bit with mavericks sadly (working on it) but you don't have to take every mission that comes up.

I don't know about taking it seriously as much as buying into the campaign as a story generator that throws up quirky situations and often kills you in unexpected ways like a Dwarf Fortress type thing. I find predefined missions quite boring by contrast even if they are guaranteed to have a greater density of events.

Go silent running and wait on time compression. 1 of 3 things will happen, you'll pick him up on passive, he'll pick you up and launch a torpedo, or you'll both get so far away from each other you can just end the mission. If is just a non mission encounter don't worry so much about having to sink it; it's only when it's a spetznaz mission that sinking it is important.
>>
>>180563897
Shkval isnt wire guided. You fire it out along the bearing of an incoming torpedo from a sub you've not detected in the hopes of snapping the guidance wires of the incoming torpedo and hopefully making the target evade and make some noise.

That's why some of them were nuclear tipped, so that accuracy isn't required.

If anyone is looking for something similar, just going to drop it here.
The standard formula for mental feet to meters conversion is to divide by ten then multiply by three. It's much more accurate and no harder.

30000 feet = 9144 m
30000 / 3 = 10000
30000 / 10 * 3 = 9000

Is there such a thing as a sliding joystick?

Basically say I want to pitch up. Instead of pulling the stick backwards (where the base remains essentially where it was before, but, the top rotates.) I slide it, and the entire stick remains upright vertically but slides backwards. Turning can be either by letting the stick turn as usual or by sliding horizontally too.

Been thinking about it because I think my problems landing with a stick (which vanish with a yoke) come down to it being much easier to hold a yoke in one position, whereas with a stick the hand gets tired more easily. (if the stick slid instead of pivoting, I could for example just slide a finger across where I wanted it to be.

I think in some ways it's analogous to trim, but in situations too short lived to warrant fiddling with trim itself when you could just gently move the yoke.

Do you mean an isotonic joystick?
>>
>>180687260
I can't see the mechanism in the picture, that one still looks like the stick itself tilts.

Perhaps the best analogy I can think of is like the PSP thumbstick sort of motion, just with a physical stick there instead of a little sliding button.
>>
>>180687614
It does tilt but it measures its displacement (isotonic) not the force acting upon it (isometric) and stays where it is displaced to.

Ah, you want an isotonic 0th order controller.
You've already got one but it has too many degrees of freedom and you hold it a different way. Look at your (probably) right hand.

That in a frame with a joystick style handle and retainers to stop it moving diagonally would be what you are describing.

I've seen that sort of thing a long time ago to control an industrial winch, not as a computer peripheral however.

We don't have the facilities to take them all prisoner.

The planned scenario will be a first of it's kind for FCRS: a Last Stand type of scenario.

Through whatever fuckery, your unit, the remnants of the 7th Armoured Brigade (UK), are all that remains of NATO forces in your sector. You are completely surrounded by second-and-third echelon units of the Warsaw Pact on all sides. They have way too many units for you to deal with, but the scenario is set up so you aren't crushed instantly. You're given freedom for the first hour or so to choose a defensive position anywhere on the map, and then from that point onward, your only goal is to kill as many commies as you possibly can: the more you kill, the higher your final score.

You have no reinforcements, no off-map support, no escape, and must ignore the automatic "Higher Command Intervention".

All of your men are going to die, and nothing you do will save them.
Good luck!

There's no point to them in the context of a sim, since a trainer only serves to teach you how to fly as they're cheaper than the main killy jets.

You have no unit cost, no maintenance, no operating costs and no risk of losing the airframe to an accident so why fly a trainer when you can right away fly the fighter or attacker

At least the l-39 comes with a variant that's a light attacker for COIN ops scenarios
>>
>>180722790
>At least the l-39 comes with a variant that's a light attacker for COIN ops scenarios
Well that's what I'm thinking. You can bolt sidewinders and rockets to nearly everything, so you've got a ghetto little jet there to play with.

Simpler systems, more forgiving handling and (perversely) lower performance are all quite appealing. In terms of unarmed trainers, I'd only really see value if they were cheap-or-free.
>>
>>180722857
>I'd only really see value if they were cheap-or-free

That's true, the l39 would probably be a way better for free module for DCS than the Su-25T flying brick, which is very hard to use as beginner player.

It's a much better simulator than WT's joke of a sim but not to the point where you have clickable cockpits. Single player is garbage and the campaign is just a series of unreleased quick missions, you can't host your own server easily, the only good part of the game is multiplayer.

SF2 complete with all the add-ons is the best option if you pirate it, since there's a stupid install order if you want everything to work right. (You do, otherwise you don't get mercinary mode and can't fly British jets as the one tea-drinker in Vietnam on contract.)

The USET-80s are the best Russian torpedoes. Wire guided and have a sensor range only slightly worse than the Mk.48s. They also come with a very nice snake search mode which tends to have an easier time finding targets.

Don't forget to take SS-N-16s though, they're very useful for dropping a torpedo on a sub many ky away.

>>180749134
How are they compared to each other in power? I'd use the ssns more but the circular search pattern seems so narrow on them. I've been mostly using test 71s because that's what the cruise missile typhoon comes with.
>>
>>180750259
The USET-80s and SET-65/TEST-71 are comparable in explosive power. Speaking of, the TEST-71 is just a wire guided version of the SET-65, which only has a sensor range of 880m, which is quite short compared to the USET-80s ~2700m.

The SS-N-16s are best used against subs far away where they wont be as likely to hear your launch, the first warning they get is when the torpedo goes active right on top of them.
>>
>>180750792
That's what I figured. But it seems like at that range you would not have a good enough firing solution to accurately place one. I fucking love those new anti ship and ground missiles on the modified typhoon. They're perfect for finishing off a wounded sub trying to surface. By the way does difficulty give enemies more health? Recently I've had to slam Sierra with three or four torpedo to kill them.

To be honest what DCS needs (and I don't know why ED haven't already done it) is a headless client running the AI like is possible in A**a.
IIRC DCS isn't properly multithreaded, which means the entire server and AI is running off of one core. What ED needs to do is create a specialised client that controls all the AI (and ideally a dynamic campaign) that runs separately on another unused core/s on the server machine or even a separate server entirely. That would completely free up the main server to just serve clients and likely reduce a lot of the problems of high user and unit numbers.

>>180814516
Torp the escorts. Surface, raise periscope/radar and missile the fleeing unarmed ships.
>>
>>180814516
Missiles have a much longer range than torpedoes. Not sure if that's relevant at all in Cold Waters though.
>>
>>180814649
A single torp will sink something that sometimes takes two missiles though, and takes twice as long to reload in port.

If all escorts are dead you can just ahead flank and catch any transport ship, which is still safer and less likely to catch bullshit helecopter attention than firing missiles.
>>
>>180815208
>Vessels run off in opposite directions
TASMs do more damage than any torp and a harpoon does 73% of a Mk48's damage, more than enough to kill any lighter ship. Ships can sink even if they don't get destroyed immediately.
>>
>>180815208
If you've lost contact with fleeing ships you can't just ahead flank and if you're going to surface and use radar to find where they went you might as well send missile their way.
>>
>>180815609
>If you've lost contact with fleeing ships you can't just ahead flank

They tend to run off in the same general direction, Maybe if the battle area was larger it would matter, but when ever i lose contact with something in a convoy i just ahead flank to cover about half the distance of last known contact and then go ultra quiet and listen, and pick them back up. Depending on the time its been ill either repeat the process to close or just fire torps in their direction and keep the wire.

>>180815434
>TASM
Ive not tried them, ive only used harpoons so far, but TASM take a full hour in port to reload, thats 4 torpedoes.

Maybe the campaign was not constantly pushing you to be somewhere you can bairly make id carry more diverse weapons, but ive had too many encounters where i had a few harpoons sitting there useless and wound up trying to fight 3 subs with two torpedoes.

If (official) inclusion of the VLS LAs came around maybe it would be different, since then it wouldn't be a trade off, id have some missiles and could use them if the opportunity arose.

It just seems like sticking to torps which can sink all targets is better
>>

I don't want to be the subs sinking beautiful and sometimes expensive surface ships.

I want to be in said surface ships sinking those disgusting subfags.

Dangerous Waters
>>
Cold Waters is about as a simulator as War Thunder is.

That is, it isn't simulator at all. It's incredibly arcade-y. Could we remove it from the OP in like a week until all the hype has died down?
>>
>>180820731
its hopeless apparently one submarine can kill entire convoys and surface ASW ships are basically for decoration only
>>
>>180821006
it is (or aims to) simulating the mechanics and physics involved. Its not a 'station simulator', but its (fairly) realistic.

You do have rendering contacts below 95% targeting solution turned off, right?
>>
>>180821119
>its (fairly) realistic.
It's not when you can dive and surface faster than torpedos because torps have an arbitrary maximum up/down pitch of 25 degrees.
>>
>>180821556
they have smaller control surfaces :^)

>>

Spintires is fun until you need to go half way across the map where mud gets up the the roof of your truck and then you flip it 200 meters away from the objective, and not even the rescue vehicle can unflip it anymore.
>>
>>180754695
That reminds me, is Children of a Dead Earth (aka CHODE) /simg/?

Sort of like subs but stealth is impossible in a developed system. Launch flak torpedoes in synchronized retrograde orbit with the target, detonate them a few hundred kilometers out. You don't have to worry about a slow suffocating death when your ship flies through a cloud of shrapnel at thousands of kilometers per second.

Any BMSer? Is it worth learning f-16 on bms? Is there stuff to do in SP? I heard about dynamic campaign being good
>>
>>180842998
Yes and yes, well, the campaign is the thing to do SP. Great fun, there are also different theatres and you can fly some other stuff with nice clicky pits, albeit with F-16 avionics (Tornado, Harrier, F-18 off an aircraft carrier etc).

You don't have to immediately learn *everything*. I'd do basic handling and then A-A, you can choose to join an A-A squadron in the campaigns or just fly the escorts/sweeps with an A-G one, and then slowly move to A-G stuff of increasing complexity (you can't do all the missions so you can just pick the ones you want to do/can do as you progress).

Its really the campaign for me that keeps me interested and learning new stuff, I couldn't really have faced learning everything at once.
>>
>>180844694
Gotcha, thanks. Learning to rampstart right now, because what can teach more about systems, than turning them on. Having hard time with BMS-Training.pdf because it seems to welcome people who know how instruments are called and etc, but not newcomers. I guess all I have to do is cope with it.
>>
>>180846407
best line of work for learning f16's systems is
sead --> ccip bombing --> ccrp bombing (jdam) --> ccrp bombing (lgb) ---> mavericks --> mastering a2a --> all the other shit (air air refuelling, ifr, and so on)
all in all youll be competent after around 500 hours flight time

Not really, FSX is pretty much completely deprecated now. Spend the money on P3D v4 (or pirate it) and pirate any modules you want.

Tacview, you can review your flights

Do people actually fly the WHOLE mission in 1946? or do they use autopilot to skip the boring stuff
>>
>>180955062
Kind of wanted to play FSX for the meme multiplayer experience

Forgot to mention a lot of servers have it enabled, so you can do PvP, and later watch how were you doing in 3D

Yes, I fell for this between ourselves and didn't notice for a couple of days.

The important thing is to patch the installer U1 to U2 to U3, then setup.

U2 and U3 do not patch an installed game.

Hang on, are you the same anon?

Don't set your controls in Falcon itself, set them up as a profile on the stick or exceptionally in the key file editor but again, you'd tweak that just so you can make a stick profile that works.

Falcon is happy with the "game controller" unless told otherwise.

I think people have done them for every stick commonly around so I'd look for one to download.

Just had a look because memory plays tricks but the only thing I've ever set in Falcon is where the afterburner throttle detente is.
