The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Shadowverse, found in the shadowverse general, /svg/, not in this general

nukes should be nastier for sure, i feel like they should be something you can't fire from a shoulder but should instead require a missile launch facility in your base and then you'd paint the target a-la starcraft ghosts after it launches.

definitely needs a mushroom cloud and a radioactive fallout component, maybe something that gets windswept over ayys and ups their evolution by a big chunk.

I think the evolution factor should be split between pollution, which will piss them off and cause more spawning/base generation; and radiation, which causes bigger and more various types of biters.

Seriously, why do they still only have two types that have the same basic attack pattern? Could be so much more interesting.

>Nukes should leave a radioactive wasteland as well.

I have the intent to make a disasters mod when factorio is at a stable release again.
The pollution cloud mechanics stay the same, the only things i'd add would be certain disasters which get triggered at certain pollution production points, and then a few mechanics which support that.

Electric miner, belt, yellow inserter, offshore/boiler/engine, power poles... Basic setup. The pollution cloud would be identical to vanilla; but the mod would add types of pollution the cloud is made up of would change based on how much of what you used.

If you used 200 belts to get your coal to the boiler (because it's far away) the majority % of the cloud would be "Dust" and "Noise"
If you used 200 pipes to get your water to the boiler (because the boiler is next to the coal miner) then the % would be "Rust" and "Water Contamination"
Pollution cloud the same size and still uniform red, just the mod having something to check for disaster types.

Lets say if Water Contamination gets too high, a fish in a pond in the pollution cloud would be killed randomly, just like a tree would be from dust, just like the biters would attack due to noise or stinky sulphur from burning hydrocarbons, etc.

The ultimate disasters would be acid rain from too much water vapor and sulphur release, water being erased inside the pollution cloud from over-pumping (free+easy landfill though) and possibly earthquakes that damage every machine in (several) chunks from extreme oil pumping.
worst of all, the poison cloud effect simulating unbreathable air/radiation, basically requiring energy shields.

you could also build a few things to mitigate disasters, such as building on stone/concrete, building overhead shelter, fire extinguisher sprinklers, etc.
don't expect this to actually happen

I don't understand what people are talking about when they say "slider hell".

Take FtD for example: To make a bullet you need to interact with like 4 different menus. Caliber on the gun, ammo loader on the dinky thing on the clip, the bullet itself, AND the length of the bullet or you fuck it all up.

How about: you build a gun, then say:

Build your shell:
Head type: (armor piercing, composite, laser guided (requires fins on the end), shaped charge, etc.)
Fuse: (timed, distance, penetration depth, distance from target/radar, etc)
Payload 1:(HE, shrapnel, EMP, Chemical, Incendiary, etc.)
payload 1 % of volume
Payload 2:(same)
Payload 2 % of volume
Additional shit: (check box: fins, tracer, rocket assisted, etc)

Total caliber:
Total bullet length:
Powder Length:
(if you set two of these, the third will auto-set to be as much as possible for the length of your autoloaders, but you can manually set it to less)

This is easier to balance, simpler to use in game, and just better.

Explain to me why I'm dumb and this is a terrible idea.

its a shit idea because everything that isn't a high speed AP railgun round that instantly disables AI is useless.

it's also that element of choice thing, infinite choices just means that the handful of viable ones are clouded within an ocean of garbage. it'd be better if it was just the handful of viable bullets as a checkbox for which one you wanted.
>>
>>175521702
>its a shit idea because everything that isn't a high speed AP railgun round that instantly disables AI is useless.
Which is easily fixed by different levels of armor deflecting projectiles by different amounts.

Or you know: making the math on high speed projectiles and Kinetic damage make some fucking sense.
>>
>>175521816

still doesn't fix it, the only actual solution to FtD is making AI invincible and limiting it to a certain number of AIs per X blocks, then making the craft 'defeated' if certain criteria are met (ship sinks, 60% or more blocks destroyed, all weapons disabled, etc).

you can keep tweaking the armor/damage numbers forever, the best gun will still always be the one that can penetrate and destroy the AI. if it needs to be faster or bigger gauge or whatever, that's what will be used.

i dunno, i find it hard to reliably take out an ai on anything, and usually its when either the cannons or ammo are destroyed that the battle is decided.

right now id say that we need ftd to build on top of the radar and detection systems to actually have a sense of recon and strategic targeting that is more greatly affected by the sensors. right now we have a whole lotta fluff with a narrow affect on gameplay. also we need more joints for mechanized systems, like a piston for sliding bay doors, ans better ways to reinforce weakpoints.

it isn't impossible but it also depends on what you mean

sure a giant battleship or even a reasonable tonnage smaller ship will be nearly impossible to hide at close ranges.

but if you're, say, that same smaller tonnage ship in an orbit around saturn, or in interplanetary space at an odd angle to the ecliptic, or a variety of other scenarios one can image where the sensor array and the "stealth" ship are far apart, the stealth aspect might matter being small and low heat enough to be hard to see at interplanetary distances doesn't mean you're invisible, but it may make the difference between, say, entering the soi of a body before being detected vs being detected many millions more miles out. and depending on the goal of the stealth ship that might make the difference.

No, get a giant block of steel that will be called "the hammer" that is dropped from above. Then a block of steel to rest your head on called "the anvil". The hammer is fired downwards at high speed using an air cannon or magnetic accelerator and crushes the persons head before they have any chance to realize they're dying.

Like, how underwater we talking about?
Probably the easiest is something connected to a beach that never really goes more than 10 feet underwater.
If you want it what people would normally think as underwater, like at least 300 feet, you're going to have a lot more trouble. I think the hardest would be making a system that's 'cut off' from the surface and has it's own CO2 scrubbers and power source.

Practice with hamsters.

Might post some screenshots here, but that's not really the point. Not sure if you noticed, but Factorio is largely a sandbox game in which you set your own goals. The devs have helpfully provided a list of possible goals, under the menu that they call "achievements".
>>
>>175615779
More in a philosophical sense. Do achievements usually drive your desire to play games?
>>
>>175615978
No. Like I said, the shiny achievement badge isn't really the point. I looked at the list and figured that this set of 5 objectives would make for interesting gameplay. If there weren't any interesting goals on the achievement list, then I would have made something up myself.
>>
>>175615335

Its shit 99% of the time. Everything about the game is bad in some way due to the devs being fucking idiots.

The rocket itself needs 1000 of each the rocket fuel, low density unit, and control units. Each cost 30 seconds, so far (1000*3*30)=90,000 or 25 hours just for the direct ingredients.

Lucky most of the direct ingredients to those come directly from furnaces(Copper/Steel) or Chemical factories(Plastic, solid fuel), but the Control Unit gets tricky, you need Speed Module 1 (15 seconds each, 4 hours, 10 minuets), and the ingredients to put into the Speed card and the Processing Unit: 20+5 green cards and 2+5 red Cards(adding another 2 green cards for each) for each Control Unit. For a total of (27000*.5+7000*6)=15 hours and 2 minuets. Don't forget the copper wires for each(27000*3*.25+7000*2*.25)=another 7 hours, 34 minuets, 10 seconds

For a total of 51 hours, 46 minuets, 10 seconds. Just for the rocket. Good luck, not gonna bother with the calculations for all the science needed to get their too.

I didn't expand it's where it was to begin with. I tried going after the nests immediately with all my turrets but Huge Worms twoshot them and then me.
The map started with like 24 accumulators and I have 60 solars and 40 steam engines and I can't make nuclear.
Can I really not power enough laser turrets to keep me alive?

I managed to make it through this one by pulling EVERY SINGLE gun turret on the map, using 30 grenades, 35 poison pods and 50 distraction pods.
They still broke nearly all the gun turrets and broke through the wall and chomped me before the last few of them died. There no way I can survive another attack. Game fucking over I guess.

Is it time for the old guns what-if again?

Suppose you get one free ranged weapon of any kind as well as unlimited ammunition for that weapon.
You must keep the weapon and its ammunition for yourself, you may not give it away even temporarily.
You may carry the weapon and its ammunition where ever you go and local arms restrictions, if any, do not apply to you.
You may also make full use of any range suitable for that weapon without being required to compensate said range's operators.

Which fictional weapon would you choose?
Which real weapon?

They are energy guns, but they do not fire gun energy.

>>175684661
The laser, if used as weapon, is the weapon. The energy is the payload to be delivered.

>>175684742
Then the factories themselves are the weapons. The device powering them, however, is not.
>>
>>175684987
Then does that mean the gunpowder doesn't work because it's only powering the weapon?
>>
>>175684618
The term weapon is context dependent, anything an individual uses to inflict harm on another individual or and object is a weapon. Thermal energy for example becomes a weapon when you build a device that uses thermal energy to inflict harm on something. An energy gun is a tool and could be used for a variety of functions, it becomes a weapon when you use it on someone or something with the intent to kill.
>>
>>175685229
Not working never was the issue. Running out was.
And you wouldn't run out of gunpowder, you'd run out of ammunition the moment you'd stop using it as ammunition, or its corresponding weapon as weapon.
>>
>>175684773
Any comics made by that dude are pretty old by now, he drew most of them way before ragefaces became popular in other places.
I can't even remember his name, I do vaguely recall it being something stupid and/or disgusting
>>
>>175685396
Then I'd create a never ending war in some small shithole and use it to inject an endless stream of energy from the gun in to the system
>>
>>175685612
So long as you're injecting it directly by shooting everyone you're good.
If you're using the weapon as anything other than a weapon, however, your supply will be cut off.

It's been a while since I last posted anything I built, because there's not been anything I've built that I've been particularly proud of.

I rebuilt my Destroyer and Frigate, so now they don't look like a tube with gun-tubes on it and a boat made by a four year old with lego respectively. Also built a "Heavy" Frigate, because I realized that there was a pretty huge gulf between the cost of my frigate and the cost of my destroyer that needed plugging.

And last, but not least, the first thing I've actually been proud of. The Longsword Class Cruiser.

It's got an absurdly inconsistent laser that I don't understand and built basically by plugging things that sounded like they'd work together, a CWIS system that I've seen shoot down two (2) missiles, a fuckload of cruise missiles, and two SAM sites.

Overall, it's a fucky mess filled with shit that I've never done before. It has a fuel engine, which as I've never built before, and couldn't get to work, I just ended up stealing someone else's. Structurally, and technically, it's the most complex boat I've built, which isn't saying much, because I'm a retard. Feel free to look at me and laugh.

all things come with time, try taking some of the prebuilts and try modifying them, so you can see what works and why. ive still only got a decent grasp on things, but everything i build is put through MANY live enemy tests to spot and fix weaknesses.

here, have a pic of my wip grand gunship. the thing needs some work and loads of internal cleanup and reorganization, but it is fully functional and combat ready.

That's pretty cool looking. It's got a lot of guns on it, too.

What's keeping it in the air? Thrusters or internal heliblades? Have you got a steam engine or a fuel engine?

One of the things I like most about factorio is how much I can see myself learn from my mistakes. Did a lot better this time around in terms of leaving myself room to expand, and bothered to do all the math to have 1 of each science pack per second(actually per 1/.75 seconds per blue assembler 2's crafting speed).

Things to do next time:
-More room between my furnaces and first assemblers
-More room for green card production
-Leave more room for becons
-Get steel production up faster so I don't use so many wooden poles

How would one go about making a gun that beat any kind of armour/shield configuration possible in FTD?
My idea is to make a gun that shoots EMP disruptor rounds from one barrel, Kinetic rounds from a rail gun barrel , and explosive rounds from a third barrel. All of the rounds and mechanisms could be made to handle the toughest opponents, or optimized for the more frequent encounters. This would effectively counter anything thick, has high AC, or is shielded.

>traffic engineering deserves this place
Cities has the worst traffic AI I've ever seen. Add more lanes: everyone sticks to one lane because that's where the turn is. Build bypass roads: nobody ever takes the bypass even when main road is literally clogged dead. Build spaghetti autism roundabouts: extremely fiddly to make symmetrical and aesthetic, without one way streets the AI still manages to use a perfectly good highway ramp WRONG.

Had a hearty laugh when the traffic was so terrible in my 100k city people were leaving in droves because the fucking HEARSES couldn't get all the stiffs in time. So naturally I built a purpusefully retarded hydroelectric dam and flooded the place. At which point cars still drove underwater, but the city quickly became an abandoned ghost town, so I cancelled all taxes and enjoyed an eerily serene sight of skyscrapers crumpling into dust.

Calling it 'AI' wouldn't be accurate. Anything requiring something close to AI or particularly advanced computing uses instead what is called a 'cogitator', which is a literal human brain. It's usually a punishment. Other than that, anything else that is capable of executing code has and will always have ancient fragments of programs and viruses, both manmade and warp-born, ancient EW algorithms, and other nastiness. Keeping these writing lines of nearly living code appeased any way they can or know how to do is literally of absolutely utmost importance to anything the Imperium does, period, on a daily basis. So YES, you better beseech the fucking tank properly and perform the correct mantinence rituals with the right sacramental lubricants if you want the 'Forward' stick to make the tank go forward instead of making it turn on the platoon and splash the other three tanks riding with you.

Given that the back-and-forth motion of the iron inserter and output inserter is identical, your proposed change is shit.
Even if the rate if iron insertion was a bottleneck (it isn't, you'd need crafting speed above 1), it'd not improve production as the product would just accumulate in the assemblers.

In the general idea of "you will never ever EVER need circuits to see the game to completion"

But if you insist, start by looking into nuclear plant setups since that's pretty straightforward and high payoff.

The next handy thing is a controller for your oil crackers so you can crack excess oil without dipping into your reserve.

Beyond that is autism territory. Things like train stop signals, resource counters and bot replacers are things you don't ever need in normal play.

Automating trens is a main thing I want to do, such as make it so if an oil tank feeding an outpost flamethrower drops to a certain level it will call a special train to top it off or load certain trains with specific items so I can run more trains though a single stop. As for your examples: I have not yet dabbled in nuclear much at all and I already use the mod Flow Control's overflow valve for cracking, it only allows flow when the input is over 80%

> Slacking off and wasting time
Solve the first problem with dutiful application of GITGUD.

> Killing nests
The second can be solved by not breaking nests. You generally don't have to kill much unless you're playing a death world.

> Generating pollution
The third is the hardest. Limit your pollution by using efficient production. Don't build stockpiles of stuff, use fewer ammo turrets, use more solar power, and use efficiency modules which reduce pollution. You can cheese this one the hardest to limit biter evolution until your tech catches up.

>>
>>175785820
There are train logistic mods that help out a lot.

I think in normal play you can do something like naming all your outposts the same and then turning the train stop on and off with logistics. When the train station turns on the train will go there but there may be a better way.
>>
>>175782693
Unless you want to load the same train with different loadouts, trains is pretty easy. Hook circuit wire up to what you want to call a train for (in the case of fire turrets that'd be the oil tank). Then send that wire to both the loading and unloading train stop structures.

After that, just set your schedule. At the loading, the wait condition should be until fluid inventory is full AND circuit condition oil < target emptyniess Then at the unloading station, wait until circuit condition > target fullmess OR fluid inventory empty.

If you're wanting to do one load satation and multiple unloads, you'll need a more complex solution. The easiest would be a single decider combinator checking the oil channel at each oil container and then broadcasting an abstract signal of 1 to the stations

Yeah you can send signals to the train stop and set wait conditions. Flipping off stations is still useful if you're sending one product to multiple stations as trains will skip off stations, but that's not necessary.

How?
>>
>>175791446
Ok, so instead of hooking up the wire from the oil tanks fueling the turrets directly to the train stops, you hook it up to a decider combinator. Set the combinator input to oil < 20000 or whatever your min threshold is, and then set the output to a letter channel on the last tab, say N for need, and then set the output to 1. Do that at each outpost, and send the combinator outputs all to the loading station on the red wire and set the wait condition to liquid inventory full AND N > 0. You also want to hook up each outpost tank it's outpost train stop on the green wire, but don't run green wire along your rails because you just want to use that locally for wait conditions so yourtrains can leave immediately if the local tank is full enough.

I guess I should explain that how circuit wires work is that they carry information as a combination of a channel and a value, and all connect wires will sum the value of all signals on the same channel. So for instance if you connected all your oil tanks at your outposts, the loading station will see Oil = 100,000 and not know that you have 4 full tanks and one empty.

Yeah, it goes to all stops. If that's an issue you can either have individual trains and learn how to signal, or disable train stops, which will cause the train to skip stops. Both of those are beyond my ability to explain. Disabling stops is probably easier, but I've never done that so I can't tell you how. Signals are just plain hard.

Hmm

An idea has crossed my mind while talking tho, but I'm not 100%sure if it would practically work, something to try tonight.

How about this: set up a second stop directly in front of or behind the main one on the same track, set all of these second stops to the same name, wire them to the storage tank, setting them to turn off when the tank is above a threshold and on when it drops below. Set the train with only the loading and the name of the unloading stop.
It should then stay put at the loading stop until one of those stops are enabled by the threshold, right?

You could have them at different names, if the stops are disabled theyll just be skipped.

>>
>>175805704
Hmm, yeah, I suppose that's tru. An imperfect solution, sure, but no reason it won't work. All my trains running are L-CC so a L-C tanker shouldn't cause any issues with signals running around pulling up not all the way to any stations.
>>
>>175804285
I just tested this and it works as expected, no need to string long lines of red cables everywhere.

Basically, have each unloading train stop be named the same thing, then set them to be enabled only whenever [Product] < [Goal]. Then have the train just wait 30 seconds to load/unload at each stop. Whenever each potential unloader is full, it makes the train wait at the loading station, and will go in a few seconds after the need becomes necessary.
>>
>>175808420
Assuming you mean Locomotive cargo cargo by LCC, are you planning on running multiple trains on the same tracks/stations?
>>
>>175809891
Yeah, that's what I mean. I have a few of the outposts already set up with a 'waiting area' before the station itself because I have another Loco I use as a personal shuttle rather than waiting on a scheduled train to come around but will have to add an area for that for a few others to make sure that nothing clogs.
>>
>>175814098
OK, then this >>175804285 will do exactly like you want it to with all the oil unloading stations named the same. I'd recommend spurring off and having the oil stations parallel to the other stations so you don't get deadlock.

>Put 3-4 hours into this campaign level

>Behemoth bugs overwhelm me
>It's happened four times now

What am I doing wrong?
I tried just rushing the goal but they overwhelm me quickly without proper defense.
So I tried prioritizing defense, but I can't seem to build a powergrid big enough to sustain the amount of laser turrets I need to hold them off. This time I had 30 turrets on 50 accumulators and 80 solar panels. Bugs broke three all three walls and started destroying turrets and then the juice ran out and all my laser turrets stopped.

Please help.
>>
>>175823507
git gud

Also moar guns, never enough guns
>>
>>175823614
Normal gun turrets get destroyed in about two shots from huge spitters, and chew through 100+ ammo each every wave. I can't make enough ammo to support all of them, I've tried. It took 6 factories running around the clock, and it took 90% of my produced steel. On top of that they do hardly any damage at all to any of the bugs.

So I maxed out laser turrets, but I can't figure out how to power them for more than 10 seconds.

Obviously my only available power sources are steam engines and solar+accumulators. I really don't think this is possible on hard.
>>
>>175824391
upgrading laser attack speed will make them use more power in less time while upgrading laser damage won't increase power usage

Finish assignments and started tinkering. Might be time for a polished rebuild of my rod logic calculator.

Pic related is a compact version of a 4 bit register. Takes up less space and uses less geoms than other version. All input/output goes left -> right as well. Uses bistable latches with orientation determined by the input rods. Only 2 collision layers used which gives plenty of space for the controlling mechanisms and cams.

To write memory on the latches, move input rods right->left, then pulse intermediate rods up 8cm
To read memory, move output rods right->left

I'm not sure how the campaign works with newer versions. I see some old icons, however I don't remember flamethrowers so maybe you haven't opted into experimental and the campaign is up to date with patches. If that's correct, you should be using flamethrower turrets.

Also, if you're trying to rush, you've got some nonessential tech: power distro 2, electric furnaces. Substations are nice for solar, but you don't NEED it. Electric furnaces are actually only half as efficient as steel, and they're also sapping energy from the grid that you need for lazers.

But really, if you can build flamer turrets, do that first. Fill them with light oil if you can.

I don't really get why Electric Furnaces in factorio have the elf stigma.

I mean sure the individual furnace may put out less pollution, but considering the amount of energy it consumes especially with productivity modules wouldn't it mean you're shitting up the world way more than you normally would unless you cover half the map with solar panels? >unless you cover half the map with solar panels?
That's what I did, but mostly out of laziness. Rather than go through the trouble of running boilers and steam engines to keep up with things, I just made a blueprint and paste over old mining areas and anywhere else I have extra space.

I'd like to see a different kind of mine in factorio, one that digs deeper and deeper and mines all different ores. This would allow players to expand inwards rather than outwards and it would be interesting sorting out the ores.

It would need serious balancing though.

If you've got a bunch of enrichment going to keep up with your rocket habit, nukes are an awesome way to clear biter bases. Just know that you'll need a gun or some robutts to clean up, firing the nuke aggros but it takes like 2 seconds of flight time+explosion time, so some of the biters will survive by running to you.
