Adequately Engineered Edition
Previous jej: >>174857448

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Garry's Mod
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox

>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

You know, I wouldn't mind RTS engineering
Like, before battle, you ready up your "deck"
But it's not a deck, it's a tactics library containing squads made by combinations of units, and the squad is a state machine that answers to your keybinds, so pressing a button places firebats on the front and makes the whole squad hold while medics patrol from behind, stuff like that

But you don't have preset units, instead you've gotta engineer what the hulls are made of, how much traction you want to give that tank and what weapons that marine should carry around, but both the extra equipment and the training for carrying that extra equipment make him cost more and slow down, shit like that, so the units you've designed are also part of the deck

Throw in some factorio and optimizing on the buildings too
And because all this can mean gaining the upper hand in battle there'd be some way to try to spy on other players and steal their decks' "cards", so players have to decide which cards they actually want to take to battle and risk getting stolen and save aces for crucial battles, because of course there'd be a multiplayer "campaign", with a world map and many battle maps, and the maps you control you can actually try to fortify, fomenting scouting and intel gathering

damn I love being an idea guy

I also thought of that but not as in-depth
Take the build-your-stuff system from Chromehounds (with some extra liberties like the possibility of using multiple movement chassis for redundance/extra capacity) and some AI design to allow the units to act independently.
Then add a communication layer to the strategy, you can give order to units only if they are in your comm network range and properly equipped units/structures can give orders to nearby units or even act as a relay
This way you could have a bunch of dumb units being led by a "officer" even if they all are outside your communication range (because they are following the officer's orders)

Fuck, /agdgxegg/ to make it real when?

Uncrewed is pretty nice since it's a fairly polished take on RTS, where you build your units as if it's robocraft.

It's kind of shit because you build your units as if it's robocraft and there's no real room for creative freedom when the slightest weight imbalance on your worker means you're collecting 5% less resources/minute. If people actually played the game, the "metagame" would instantly crystallize, everyone would use the same unit designs and at that point you might as well play starcraft instead.

This has already been technically possible for a while using waypoints, even more so now with the autodocking stuff available now. It's going to take legwork that hasn't been done yet as far as scripting goes, but the basis for doing it exists even without inter-grid comms. You'd be using little shuttles that fly or warp around with stuff typed out on internally mounted LCD screens and then reading it from programming blocks to get the coordinates to go to, what to pull from inventory, etc. You can also use this system for pure communication as a runner-like system. The infrastructure required for this is both complicated to code and large to build, but possible.

Proposal: Factorio devs should change the reactor bonus mechanics. Right now each side gets +100% for a perfectly aligned neighboring reactor and 0% for everything else. Instead, they should get a variable bonus between 0 and 100% based on how much of each side is covered by neighboring reactors. So if you put down two reactors that are misaligned by one tile (as in the pic), they each get 80% bonus (because 4/5 of the edge is touching the other reactor), instead of the current 0%.

This would make reactor designs more interesting because the 2xN brick would no longer be optimal for larger reactors. There would be tradeoffs between complexity and efficiency. For example, designs that are more square will get higher bonuses, while designs that are more linear will make it easier to place the heat exchangers and turbines.

Is this a good idea? Y/N

>Is empyrion worth buying for single player?
Single player is all I've done, and I'm enjoying it.

I recognize that it can get boring/feel like there's no challenge once you reach a certain point. There's lots of room to self-impose challenges, though. For example, on my last planet, even though I have a capital ship in orbit that's loaded with goodies, I enjoy loading a ship with just a few essentials and going down to the planet and starting anew.

If that sounds fun to you, hey, go ahead. I'm vaguely interested in the multiplayer but the griefing potential is so enormous that I'm sure my fun would be ruined.

It's water. Some planets have oceans and I think the new update is including a mostly-aquatic planet. "boats" exist in the form of hovercrafts shaped to look like boats, but it's not really that convincing or immersive.

>control the input of fuel to the reactors
Easier said than done buddy
you'd think all it takes is to place the input on a timer that matches the time required to go from 600C to 1000C and then back to 600C
But the speed at which that happens depends on how much steam I'm producing, which in turn depends on how much power I need (or how many tanks I need to fill).
Sure, I can read steam on a tank, I could even try to read how the ammount changes over time, but once the tank fills and because the exchangers can only provide as much as fits, which is exactly as much as the turbines have consumed, the only thing I could read would remain mostly constant and become useless

so, how exactly do YOU control fuel input?

Overloaded how?
The belts simply don't let copper or iron slip through, and new raw material isn't added so long as there's any on the return loop.
I've done this before, senpai.

That's pretty nifty desu. It really keeps working even when the output gets backed up? And can you expand it (using higher tier belts), or will the control system break if there's too many plates on the belt when the output backs up?

>>
>>175274826
You use two of them and stuff their outputs into each other. A 4 square circle jerk works too.
>>
>>175275684
But where's the usable output? I can understand if you loop a belt around and have a burner inserter on it but just 2 drills and an output?
Mind showing how to do it?
>>
>>175273449
>It really keeps working even when the output gets backed up?
In addition to the previous condition (no or few items on the return loop), new raw material is only added if the output belt is empty or the items are moving.
These checks are explicitly required, lest the setup goes into a deadlock at the first hiccup.

>And can you expand it (using higher tier belts)
Easily.
If I were to upgrade >>175271934 to red, I'd simply upgrade all belts, snap off the top end of the loop, and another two sets of 5:1 wire:chip assemblers.
Repeat the process again when upgrading from red to blue. Upgrading from one set of belts to two is a bit trickier, but still very doable.
Mind you, the setup of filter inserters used to prevent raw material from getting unto the output belt requires a bit of adjustment when using faster belts.

>>175273637
You're right, in a sense.
Items don't go past the inserters, because the belt simply stops when raw material is detected.
However, I find that with faster belts, items can simply slip past without being detected.
This is however easily remedied using two belt pieces for detection instead of one.

That's not particularly correct. The whole "two dimensions of time" thing is from a bad usage of terminology. "Time" is the nature of cause-and-effect. Egan's "second time" is just an inversion of a spatial axis. It's literally just a non-Euclidean universe.

I really, legitimately have no idea why you'd ever play Spengies in SP. There's no...point? Not that there's a point in MP either, but at least you can make stupid spessboats and shit and show your friends.

Even Minecraft has decent enough exploration and you can see some neat environments while traversing the world. Spengies is just literal endless void aside from some rocks, there's nothing to see, nothing to do aside from build more and bigger ships and there's only so much you can do with cubes in spess before it gets old. Minecraft is a lot better with mods/on a server too, granted.

It's a fun game to fuck around in with other people, but a SP game? Nah, fuck that.
>>

>I really, legitimately have no idea why you'd ever play Spengies in SP
Lego builds. There are creative servers ofc, but MP fuckabouts are a distraction, and building walkers in shite simspeed is almost impossible because rotors have a tendency to explode and/or vanish.

Is there any point in building a bigger nuker if you can't use the power generated?

Even with the adjacency bonuses every reactor is still using fuel all the time, so you'd just end up using more fuel to get the same power out.

Is there some way of turning reactors on and off that I'm not aware of? They don't connect to circuit network.

It's hard to find the real top level flight speed of things in the tiny-ass barren expanse map but I think around 430 m/s or 1550 kph would be accurate for this plane

At that speed the plane wants to pitch down so I have to make constant corrections with the elevator to keep the angle of attack at 0, which adds drag and limits the acceleration

How to spergies. To start off, spawn in a lemon (basic spawn ship?)
You'll be doing a lot of idle drifting in order to conserve fuel, so get used to turning dampeners off, and not flying directly at your target (which is often an asteroid).
Look for uranium and ice in asteroids. Whenever you've visited an asteroid, be sure to mark down it's contents and position (for example using the GPS system), the information will come in handy later.
Provided nothing comes along to break oxygen, refinery or power (and you already have all three), you'll stay alive indefinitely once this step is complete.

Next up, get basic production going. This means a few arc furnaces first, then productivity upgrades on your refinery - and at least one large drill for your lemon.
You'll need shittons of iron, along with some nickel, chrome and silicon - and of course more cargo containers to store all of this shit.
If you're using up components faster than they're produced, then build more assemblers. Remember to give them productivity modules as well, and to keep them busy while you're away from the craft.
To make construction faster, build things in one big cluster, where you can always access a conveyor door - this means no more flying back and forth, just a lot of opening/closing inventories.

At this point, your lemon should be a flying industrial base, equipped with absolutely everything required to do whatever you want.
The area in your proximity should include about 20 asteroids of varying sizes, all having their contents clearly marked out - meaning you know exactly to go, should you run into scarcity
At this point, the survival element has been tossed out the window, and you're effectively playing a creative sandbox. ETA: at most 10 hours ingame with 1x1x1 - depends heavily on asteroid density and speed cap.

Like this

Belts: always enabled, read belt contents (hold)
Arms: enable if (appropriate color) science pack < 2, stack size override = 1
All arms and belts are wired together

This setup ensures that the the five wired belts always contain at least 2 of each science pack. Since the belt runs in a loop, eventually every five-belt segment will contain at least 2 of each science. And as labs pull science of a certain color off the belt, they will create a deficit of that particular color, and the arms will replenish it.

Though, you don't really need these kinds of setups any more, now that inserters can take from labs.

I'm more partial to this method, myself:

The adder adds 0 to each, the multiplier multiplies each by -1, the contant outputs which and how many items you want on the belts, inputs and outputs (belts, inserters) pulse what they read, the filter inserters are set to take filter from signal

Because of the feedback wire (green) the adder stores everything that comes in (as a negative number) and gets out (as a positivee number), effectively being the negative of how many items are sitting on the loop right now. Way more aesthetic than a bunch of belts on reading on hold mode

This is added to the ammount from the contant combinator, which results on how many items you need until you reach the specified ammount.

You can abstract this to any system, such as how much iron plates you've got on the steel smelters, so you can take into accoun both the iron stored on boxes and on the belts. Hell, even the "iron" stored in steel plates if you convert the signal to iron multiplying by the right ammount

was a huge undertaking and success for me. Really enjoying it but feeling like I'm missing something important when it comes to making automation work smoothly.

I'm doing the second campaign now, and I think I fucked myself. I got everything set up automated research, building my factories connected to my smelters pumping out materials. But now I need steel, which also comes from smelters, so I need to somehow make a whole other lane of smelters and split my iron to it then lead that lane back to my factories in a way that works and I can't visualize it. Maybe I'm building everything too close together? With no room I basically just built two steel smelters that are fed from chests I have to dump my iron into.

The reason I'm fucked is I'm out of iron. It seems like just by doing research I've ground through my entire supply minus the 3000 plates it says I need to put on my car. What did I do wrong?
>>
>>175393858

factorio is a game about always needing more iron. to do the steel smelting, just split off some of your iron production line to a separate belt and dedicate that to steel, then belt the product back to the factory. it doesn't have to be between your smelters/factory, you can just put it on the side.

also get more iron.

>I just wanna help
All the more power to you, even if your smugness is detestable, method backwards and product insignificant.

When educating someone on a topic, you do not start off by simply handing the person a sheet of the correct answers.
Sure, a cheatsheet can be a useful aide, but by itself it only offers an incomplete understanding of the topic in question.

Similarly, a sheet of various assembler ratios will not teach the reader how to calculate the ratios on their own, and they'll still be stuck without it.
What if any of the recipes are changed (advanced circuits) or the buildings themselves have been modified (steam engines and boilers)?
Will you then update the sheet, or will your dependents be stuck with outdated information?
Can you guarantee that the sheet will encompass every possible combination of assemblers and recipes - including those for mods?

>work on assemblers until I don't have any build ups on the lines
Is a pants on head retarded way to go about figuring the ratio of two assemblers. This is how you do it:
Starting with the intended product, choose one of the required items and calculate the cost per second.
Advanced circuits require 4 wires every 6 seconds with CS of 1. Using a T2 assembler (CS=0.75), it becomes 4 wires every 8 seconds.
Then calculate the production rate of the required item in question.
Copper wires a produced 2 at a time every 0.5 seconds with CS of 1. Using a T2 assembler it becomes 2 wires every 0.667 seconds (or 6 wires every 2 seconds).
You're now left with two fractions (4/8 and 6/2), the number you must multiply the fraction with to get lowest common denominator is the ratio of assembler.
In this case, you need 6 advanced circuit assemblers for each copper wire assembler (4/8 * 6 = 6/2 * 1 = 3)
When using assemblers of identical CS, just set it equal 1. Lot easier to calculate

Even the cursory explanation above should be more helpful than a "just use 3:2 lmao" sheet.

More miners, more furnaces. You should have so much finished iron it just sits on the belt, but not so much none of your furnaces are actively producing. Furnaces can store 100.finished plates so if you have a couple on each line backed up it acts as a decent buffer. Steel is expensive at 5 plates each.

man, that large iron deposit of 883k better last me a long ass time, i can't find any iron in the general vicinity. i got copper though, more than enough copper to last for an eternity.

this train world setup is pretty neat, i think i'm gonna keep using this config for future games. it adds a dimension to the game where you are forced to deal with the military side and plan train routes and such, feels more complete as a whole.

> feeling like I'm missing something important when it comes to making automation work smoothly.
A main bus beats ad hoc layouts. Read KatherineOfSky's guide (on Steam) for ideas. You don't need anything that large for the campaign (although you will want at least 4x iron/copper and 2x steel/plastic/circuits for sandbox), but the general principle still holds.

> Maybe I'm building everything too close together?
Quite possibly.

> The reason I'm fucked is I'm out of iron.
Have you got the trains bringing iron and copper from the outposts?

You can just about get the copper without the outpost, but you'll definitely need the outpost for the iron.

Am I the only one that doesn't like this idea of "bioclang"? It just sounds so cheesy.
Sure, molecular machines and cellular automata sound cool, but most of the time the shit you talk about is deviantart-tier.

>>175405515
Also this game would be much cooler if the player was a regular human experiencing all that shit.
>>
>>175405985
Yeah, it is hard to make it not just Tyranid. One of the problems with these ideas is that bioclang things are usually made to stay exactly as they are while they spread, so they're not very interesting once you know all of it.
Machines that get more and more efficient and sleek, but act in exactly the same manner as bioclang, would probably be cooler.

>They say Tyranids 'get stronger' as part of the lore, but besides adding more creatures to what already exists there's not much they can do
Isn't adding new creatures already an improvement?
Or are you saying "in quantity only"?

For the variety bioclang i think there will be a xcom clone coming next year, enemies mutating to counter your tactics will be part of the deal.
>>
>>175406840
making Tyranids behave like actual rapidly-evolving and adaptive creatures would probably mean basically rewriting their rules from the ground up on a regular basis.
1) If GW did that, the playerbase would be fucking livid at the inevitable pricetag, to an extent even GW couldn't ignore
2) This means Tyranids are only really an aesthetically static idea of bioclang.

Same eggman, followup : Considering all the other factions in the game are somewhat stagnant, it could be argued that the Tyranids are already meeting evolutionary requirements in terms of what's needed to munch up that particular galaxy, so they've become similarly stagnant. First time using a bus of some description

Gotten farther than ever, and automated the first 6 science variants, but I'm having a pretty obvious iron and copper deficit

Will replacing the iron/copper lines with blue belts be enough to just get a rocket in the air? After that, I've got plenty of cleared space to rebuild and expand stuff, but I want to at least launch a rocket first

well, you could substract 0, multiply by 1 or divide by 1, it's all the same
The combinator is on a feedback loop by green wire, so the output is the previous output affected by you combinator's operation, let's say:

Go = Gi + K

With K = 1 you get a counter that adds 1 every tick
With K = 0 you get a "counter" that never changes, effectively becoming a register

But this is only half true: Combinators add both the green and red input before operating on them:

Ro = (Ri + Gi) + K
Go = (Ri + Gi) + K

This way whatever is pulsed on red is added to the value stored on the registry, which then can be safely read through the red output. You could oulse directly on the green wire too, but I'd rather keep the wires clean and tidy, signal-wise

So you don't need to connect all your bases with powerlines anymore. Just ship some steam and place some turbines there.

But that's logistical retardation. That's like eliminating the need for shipping ammo from your ammo factories by shipping the tin and gunpowder separately and just putting them together on spot. Not to mention it takes a lot more energy to get the steam over to the other base, while there are 0% losses on power lines.

But the way I see it it works on measuring items in and items out, and taking the difference. So while the difference is small, the positive and negative values stored by measuring consumption/addition are going to get very large with opposite signs, right?

It's like asking wether writing a five would eventually use enormous ammounts because 5 = 3234326 - 3234321

Let's try again:
- You set up the feedback, and the register sits there, storing a whooping ammount of 0
- A belt reads an incoming item and sends a pulse
- The register reads both the pulse and the stored ammount: 0 + 1 = 1
- The register sits there, storing a whooping ammount of 1
- A belt reads an item an outgoing and sends a pulse that get's multiplied by -1
- The register reads both the pulse and the stored ammount: -1 + 1 = 0
- The register sits there, storing a whooping ammount of 0

Aside from this not being the case, the upper limit for circuit network values is very large, close to 2 billion. You could count up every item that goes by on 6 fully-loaded blue belts for 3 months and still not hit the limit.

There are a lot less things to hit in the sky, and it's also a lot easier to keep in the sky. Just point up and don't stall out and you'll be good as long as you don't run out of fuel.
But now that self-navigating cars are starting to be a thing, it wouldn't be hard at all to program one to keep itself from crashing into anything. In fact, that's exactly what most airlines are using nowadays.
Air travel is considerably easier on computer than ground travel. All lanes are virtual, defined by agencies and shoved into databases that can be easily indexed. There is basically nothing to hit, and the most difficult thing navigation software has to do is take off and land at the right time. On the ground, however, there's a ton of shit from every direction, traffic laws, other cars and only a 2D plane to move around in, and not even that most of the time. If a car can navigate a road, it can navigate the skies. A Tesla jet car would be a fairly simple thing, the only problem is the completely uneconomical fuel cost.

Using only belt sensors, you'd need some wacky math to figure out what has been removed.
An alternative solution is simply using a throughput-measuring device.
Whenever the throughput of a given science pack drops below a given threshold, more are added.

Every 100% on the bonus is like an extra core, so on your pic you have 4 cores worth of heat at the prize of 2 cores: 40MW * 4 = 160 MW
Each core can support 4 heat exchangers: 160 MW / 10 MW = 16 HE
Each can generate 5.8 MW, so...: 160 MW / 5.8 MW = 27,58 turbines

If you have more turbines than your heat exchangers can support, you'll run out of steam
If you have more heat exchangers than your cores can support, they'll cool down

Your current setup gives every exchanger (10 MW) two turbines (11,6 MW), so they can't keep up with steam production
