>>
>>175380104
bad is something objective, like the abuse, and reliance of prayer on both sides. Even though it turned in to the original git gud with JAD and prayer flicking.

You forgot safing though, which is probably the biggest flaw that trivialized a lot of bosses before jagex stopped being lazy for a brief second.

RS is a very flawed game, but its leages above WoW and the rest of the Theme Park Group.
>>
>>175378874
once you realize the whole game is clicking on different parts of your screen your argument is invalid.

1. what's bad about it? it's just like any other skill. you click and click and get experience
2. the only one I can think of is the heavy ballista, and I don't agree with that
3. every mmo has this problem. jagex has a moderator dedicated to preventing/banning bots. over a million have been banned since release
4. the only dead minigame is trouble brewing
5. yeah flinching sucks, you're right. safe spotting is alright
6. a lot of the skills are pointless. when the game was made the developers didn't expect anyone to get to 99. nobody is forcing you to fire make
7. prayer allows for interesting pvp/pvm
8. I think you're basing this off of a small sample size
>>
>>175380382

the amount of trouble you will get will most likely be proportional to your game's quality and popularity

so don't expect any trouble at all

(seriously though if your game becomes well-known the worst you'll be likely to see is a DMCA takedown)

idea guy here

a multiplayer game where you're a wizard and you use magic to kill other wizards

between battles you sit in your ivory tower and brew mixtures and write scrolls to improve your killing spells

there would also be spells that effect the environment, e.g. a spell that destroys a bridge, killing the wizards on it

you win when you are the only wizard left (death is permanent)

Is it possible to make a game where you fight monsters that you encounter throughout your journey that you can capture to join your team or would people just scream pokemon clone?

I've been working on this off and on for a couple of months its essentially an open world tile based RPG with real time combat. there are monsters you encounter by entering certain regions in the screen for example if you're in region x20,y,50 - x60,y100 monsters will spawn at a rate of 5-10 steps and there's a dice system to decide which monster spawns.

The combat works by assigning abilities that you learn over time to the QWER keys. every move has a cool down anywhere from 0-60 seconds depending on the ability of the move. for example this beam type move that does a flat 600 damage would take 30 seconds to cooldown where as your basic attack which does your strength level * 3 would take 3 seconds to cooldown, the whole abilities system has yet to be worked out.

anyways heres some progress videos let me know what you guys think

You do know Pokemon didn't invent the monster breeder genre, right? They were over a decade late. And there have been plenty of monster games since then, with varying levels of success.
>>
>>175391245
Make it Pokemon but for adults.

As in brutal dogfights where the monsters shred each other to pieces and can get mortaly wounded.

As long you avoid the typical tropes related with Pokemon (colorful worlds, music, monster design etc) you can easily get away with it.

Also what >>175391426 says, monster breeders are much older than Pokemon, Game Freak and the Pokemon Company only managed to market it better.
>>
>>175391780
>As in brutal dogfights where the monsters shred each other to pieces and can get mortaly wounded.
Or just like the Pokemon OVA's.
Not even adults want to watch actual dog fights.
>>
>>175391245
Man you saying real time and QWER made me hope it was like a single player MOBA with poke mechanics. Good design though, especially the video titles.

>>175390321
Soon anon. Though it won't have instants (and a very simplified stack), I have 2 mechanics planned to work around that.

hey aggydaggy I need your help
I'm making modular spaceships, but it looks like shit (pic related)

So anyways, the parts are all cubes, some modules will be 3x3 or whatever, depending on what they do.
Whatever, it doesn't matter.
So I'm using simple cubes that are just the edges of cubes to indicate where you can put build. Basically they are the default cube.
But I want to make the game with an orthographic perspective, but then these edges just look like shit.

How to fix this?

Make a vague game that caters to the base of a fetish, show it as an alpha. When you get money buy people with the fetish for ideas. If anything use polls for what is wanted. Lots of creators don't like what they make, but make it because it sells.

I don't think mine will ever really DIE, but the progress will probably always be agonizingly slow since I got life shit to worry about besides it.

Also cause it just fucking takes forever. It's taken me like a full day to make just the exterior of this building for the zone I'm making to test shit.
And this is the simpler building. The bigger one greyboxed in the back is supposed to be massive and fancy, and I don't even know how to start approaching it so I'm doing it last.

So-called "gag orders" (TROs) and settling out of court are why you don't hear of specific cases more often (also nobody cares about the nth indie dev's legal dramas) but once you have something worth taking, you will be targeted.

Read the fucking manual.
From the 5.0 upgrading manual:

Unity no longer uses “Helper References” to access common components.
In Unity 5 and later we can no longer access components using their“shorthand helper references” and we must access them directly
using “GetComponent”.
One example of this is accessing the Rigidbody component attached to the same GameObject as the script. In Unity 4 and earlier, this was simply accessed with “rigidbody.”
Now this must be done with “GetComponent<Rigidbody>().”
It is usually a “best practice” to find this Component when the instance of the script initializes, and “cache” the reference in a local
variable.
This is commonly written as:
private Rigidbody;
void Start ()
{
rb = GetComponent<Rigidbody>();
}

Now, with the reference to the local Rigidbody component saved in the variable “rb”, we can use this reference anywhere within the script.
One example would be to add force to the rigidbody with:

rb.AddForce (someVector3Value);

You have to write it something like this:

private Rigidbody rb;

void Start ()
{
rb = GetComponent<Rigidbody>();
}

void FixedUpdate ()
{
float moveHorizontal = Input.GetAxis ("Horizontal");
float moveVertical = Input.GetAxis ("Vertical");

Vector3 movement = new Vector3 (moveHorizontal, 0.0f, moveVertical);
rb.velocity = movement * speed;

New one definitely looks better.
Also that drifting style problem is a common problem. As you make more models you get better. So eventually the oldest models you made will end up not looking so good.
It's a good idea to keep a palette of colors that are used throughout all the textures, to help keep the colors consistent. And when you make a new model open a few of your old ones to use as reference.

Now that I think about it there are some nice possibilities for gameplay

Game set in a public park, ENF mode is playing as a naked woman trying to find some makeshift clothes and get home without being seen, photographed or caught by police, exhibitionist mode is playing as a pervert woman trying to be seen and jerk off in public but not photographed or caught by police.
Time of day is difficulty mode,
Easy is night time, there's only patrolling police and horny couples that don't pay much attention to you
Normal is early morning, there are joggers going in a pattern and elderly that can't see well.
Hard is daytime, young moms with their children running around
Expert is evening when everyone is here

Explore park to find unlocks, ENF unlocks stupid outfits(leaves, bandaids, bandages, cardboard box, plastic bag), pervert unlocks new toys to pleasure herself with.

Game over screens could be cool, getting photographed will show you a screenshot of you being spotted on a social network/imageboard/porn site with nasty comments, getting caught gives you a newspaper article or news report, all added to a gallery for future appreciation.

I dunno why some company hasn't come out with software that lets you paint UVs with an updating model directly next to it

Technically, it isn't covering up the whole screen, but rather, it's deactivating everything on screen. The background there is actually the background that's normally obscured from vision by the boxing ring. Same shit, though.

I can put in a transition and probably make everything visible while paused, but part of me isn't sure I'd like for the pause menu to keep the player and enemy visible onscreen. I don't want the player to be able to use pausing the game to buffer frame-perfect inputs or use it to cheat on visual cues.
>>
>>175405463
Well theres already software which lets you paint directly onto the model itself. Seems really handy for detailed work.

I think even blender has that feature

Did some more title screen menu work. Window scaling now has a cap based on your resolution and the bars for sliders can now be moved, though they don't do things yet for the most part. You can also change some other game settings as well now. Button reference doesn't actually do anything yet; I'll get that working after I put back in the rebind menus along with the help text buttons showing appropriate controls.

Consult with a lawyer on that. I believe you can just change the information on steam and in the application itself, but make 100% sure by getting legal advice

Not everyone is going to get attacked by patent trolls, but games that get any amount of success probably will eventually. The consequences of the risk (not having an LLC to cover your ass) can be devastating.
If a patent troll tries to sue you, try your best not to settle. If you settle you're basically putting a big sign on your back that says "sue me"; some lawyers will fight for you for free.

Anyone can have legal representation. Stardew has a publisher company, so technically they could sue the publisher. If the publisher has to pay up, they could theoretically come after you then, but at least the patent troll has to get through 1 layer.

I don't think you actually want to make a video game

So I've been learning python in order to learn some programming and get into the whole game dev thing my first goal was make a roguelike with libtcod but I read someone on reddit said python is too slow for complex games

Did I waste my time? should learn something like C or C++ as well/?
>>
>>175422124
Do want to make games or make game engines? If you want to do the former then programming experience in just about any language will translate well into game dev.

If you want to do the latter (and I promise you there's absolutely no way you'll ever be able to do both) then I would definitely learn C or C++ asap.
>>
>>175422124
Python isn't widely used for games, but it's a good starter language.
I'd say switch, but I wouldn't go as far to say your time was wasted. General programming skills transfer from language to language quite fluidly, so don't worry too much about the investment of sunken time.

The first game I ever made was an endless Space Invaders clone with Python.
>>
>>175422124
You're still learning programming, you can switch to another language after you actually start to understand what the fuck are you doing.
>>
I'm thinking about using love2D since it is free. Is it worth to just use gamemaker and pay later? Is love that much more annoying/harder to use if I am not experienced in programming?
>>
>>175421889
I like the idea of making a game that I like and others would like. I don't like the process of making it though. It's like having a picture in your head of something that would look nice but when you try to draw you realize you're shit and should never actually draw.
>>
>>175422785
Godot is better
>>
>>175422124
It depends on what "complex" means. If you're using an engine, then 90% or more of the code you're writing won't be very computationally expensive, since part of the function of an engine is to do most of the common expensive stuff for you. The speed of a language like Python becomes an issue once you try to do complex calculations in it on a frequent basis (such as every frame, etc.); in that situation you'd want to implement that part in a faster language such as C++.

>>175422785
Love2D will be harder, but not impossible, for someone who isn't experienced in programming. It's more of a framework than an engine, so you'll end up doing more things in code compared to Game Maker.

It's amazing how much game graphics improved in the last decade and it's even more impressive how much the skill and ambition of the average dev plummeted in the last few years thanks to abhorrent engines, practices and terrible taste in general.
Computers are capable of incredible feats nowadays but all I see are comedically bad-looking games, not only technically but also design-wise.

"Easy game devving" was a terrible, terrible mistake. It can be compared to the death of photography as everyone started having cameras for example.

I can only hope that the indie dev trend dies out so that the artistry and progression can come back.

btw I was in your exact situation a while ago. take my advice if you'd like.
the first and second edition are not too different, just torrent what you can.
start the book on page 1 and read everything, don't skim. when it teaches you about certain concepts take notes on paper and do every practice question at the end of each chapter. don't skip to the next chapter until you know the answer and why it's correct.
this may seem obvious but when you don't understand one of the early concepts it will be hard to understand more complex programs/concepts later on.
once you've finished the book move onto eu4. don't try to work along side. good luck anon!

If you're deadset on learning a more low-level language then I'd highly recommend Harvard's CS50x course, https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-computer-science-harvardx-cs50x as opposed to just reading Stoustrup like the other anon recommended.

So like that? just make the first number roll behind the scenes since it always seems to be the same? Seems to favorite a few numbers though.

Why is an RNG engine so hard?

You seriously need to learn to read the fucking manual anon.

http://lua-users.org/wiki/MathLibraryTutorial

"But beware! The first random number you get is not really 'randomized' (at least in Windows 2K and OS X). To get better pseudo-random number just pop some random number before using them for real: "

The first call of math.random isn't going to be random, one possible (though really trashy and ugly) solution would be to create a temporary variable to assign the non-random number to before trashing it.

Everything aside from D20a seems to be sufficiently random to me. That aside, Lua's built in random function isn't all that great and if seeded and called (using OS.time) in rapid succession is going to yield very similar results.

unfortunately if the speed goes too high or too low they spin in place at the corners every now and then or occasionally in the middle of a platform, and once in a while they do that even at a middling speed

So in Unity, how would you do this?

You have a GameObject that contains a Camera, that GameObject has the script to move the camera.
Would you put the input in that script, or in the player script?

I think the best would be to have the "move()" function in the camera script, but the input inside the player, so the player checks to see if the camera needs to be moved, then sends the camera scripts the "move" order.

This is for a game where the player controls several units and moves the camera around in the map.

In UE4, you would have a pawn that has the camera, and then the player moves that pawn... I think.

So yeah, do I put all the input and everything inside the camera script, or divide it between the camera script and the player script

>crew has a loyalty system according to loot/ration shares
>ports, shipping lanes, patrols and companies/empires proc generated
>win state might be some special ship carrying a ton of shit sailing in the future that you need to prepare for to take out, in this case turn-based boardings would probably be better because sitting and watching would be kind of boring

It'd be hard to come up with gameplay that wasn't clumsier and shallower than FTL.

I feel like it would be easier to make a 3D game as a 1MA than a 2D one, in terms of the art assets. One could, say, make a single character model and just rotate it in a 3D environment, instead of making an animated sprite set with 8 different directions.

Pretty much all of the well regarded ones I've come across use isometric regardless of whether they're 3d or 2d, but I haven't been able to put my finger on any major technical advantage other than that it arguably makes maps with lots of height variation look a bit nicer and more readable.

I love your code, Anon.

There's a lot wrong with it, in case you don't know. Your sleep function is a busy wait, which is just the wrong way to do it (there should be a library function, maybe in the os module). You shouldn't seed the RNG every time you need to generate a random number, just once at the start of the program. You keep calling your own functions as print(...) even though they don't return anything; is there a reason you won't just call them on their own? Lastly, you call your functions recursively when you don't need to -- your program keeps storing data about all the previous function calls on the stack, so after a bunch of turns (a few hundred/thousand, maybe) it'll just crash. You should refactor your code to use a single while loop on the top level, maybe something like:
while answer1 == '1' then sleep(1) diceroll(0) answer1 = io.read() end os.exit()

(Sorry if you already know these.)

Not sure if you fixed it yet, byt GetAxis is an incredibly small value, and you multiply it by an even tinier value, Time.deltaTime.

Try throwing in another multiplier, e.g. "power", so something like:

body.AddForce(new Vector3 (0.0f, 0.0f, Input.GetAxis("Vertical") * Time.deltaTime * power));

Power should be pretty big, above 100 or something, when you multiply with Time.deltaTime, think of it as "normalizing" it to want you want across an entire second.

in general, GetComponent is not a good idea in Update methods (it takes a toll on performance if done a lot), you should store the variable in something like Awake or Start. Also, creating new variables in update will eventually lead to a lot of garbage collection since the variables are never used again.

let's say you have a wall, and it's a long wall.
in "3/4", your wall and your guy are drawn depending on where their feet are.
If the guy's feet are lower than the wall, the guy is in front of the wall. No matter how long the wall is.

In isometric view, your guy's feet can be on top of the wall's "feet", but if he's on the right, maybe you draw him in front of the wall, if he's on the left, you draw him behind the wall.
So yeah, a pain in the ass. because you have to have that wall have a bunch of pieces now

Concept art, sprites, any kind of 2D art really, it's not too hard to adapt.
>>
>>175458097
I think that's too simple for me. I don't just want to do facial animations, I want to morph a mesh into a completely different mesh.
>>
>>175458304
Concept art is a thing
>>
>>175458304
if you want to have a sure job position at a game dev studio you need to be able to do all types of art.
First of all, not just "your style"
Learn to make all types of art, ALL types.
And if you learn about making UI, then you'll easily find a job.
Check out many popular games, and try to make UI.
and if you can make this UI into an actual UI inside of unity for example, you will never be out of a job.
>>
>>175458304
I think the hardest part about 3d modeling is creating the concept art.
Once you have the concept on paper, you just have to remodel it in 3d.
Shouldn't be too complicated to learn this.
>>
>>175458403
>>175458419
>>175458526
>>175459024
Fair points. But I am honestly surprised that concept art was brought up that much. I've just always imagined video game concept art being something that the head artist doodled on his free time.
>>
>>175459618
No one will hire you just for concept art except huge companies, in smaller indie teams you will have to do a lot of different stuff no matter your role.
>>
>>175459618
Concept art is of key importance for a decently sized company. They need to be able to show it to publishers and other investors to show them how the game will be.
Shitty concept art = no money for the company
>>
>>175459024
Turning a 2D drawing into a 3D model requires more knowledge of form than simply drawing 2D concept art, I think.
>>
>>175459760
I disagree.

Finding the 3D equivalent of code monkeys is quite easy, finding people who can actually design the thing is harder.

Any pixel artist here wanna work on a 2D stealth game?

My current artist realised he hates drawing.
>>
>>175459918
I think what he said is perfectly valid.
But I have no idea what you're talking about
>>
>>175459618
You should listen to >>175459760, but as a programmer who tries to do art (2D and 3D) every now and then -- concept art may seem like simple sketches, but it's incredibly useful to be able to see what something's supposed to look like and what you should aim for, instead of creating art assets with no sense of direction. Whenever I tried modelling, my biggest problem was finding references and images to use as guidelines. If I could get custom drawings of a particular thing from the angles I need, it would be so much simpler.
>>
>>175459905
You also have to draw it from different angles of course.
Then you just can line it up with your 3d model from each angle (mostly just front and site) til it fits.
>>
concept artist without any other skills = ideaguy
>>
>>175460086
You can go to /3/ and find a competent 3d artist to turn pictures into models, but they won't necessarily have the artistic ability to make those pictures, to create the designs, to make a unique and consistent art style.
>>
>>175460070
he doesn't hate drawing, he loves it.
What he hates is the fact that he thought it would be easy.
Now he realised it takes him hours of work for very little progress.
This is what happens to most artists who get into games, they have no idea how hard it is.
It's an actual job
>>
I fucking hate Safrin, thanks for giving me hope and then leaving Polycode in a state of utter disrepair

Now he's rewriting it from scratch in secrecy, posting some pictures on Twitter AKA it's never going to be released
>>
>>175460214
That has nothing to do with what the other guy said.
A concept artist is useful at the start of the project, and maybe for some backgrounds depending on the game.
After that, the rest of the game is 95% work that the concept artists has no idea of how to do.
So the other guy was right, for a small indie team, you will need to do more than just concept art.
Or make a visual novel and be shit though.
>>
>>175460179
Even if you draw front and side there is quite a few forms that you usually wouldn't have to represent in 2D which will be needed

>>175460652
Good concept art is also from all kinds of angles, with all kinds of animations and shit included.
And this isn't just for 3d modeling the case, but also for manga.

If you are really good at concept art, it's basically just a matter of finding a decent workflow with 3d modeling softwares. Which shouldn't be too hard.
>>
>>175460832
how does one even git this gud at art
>>
>>175460973
Practice and natural talent. The artist who did this practiced since teenager already, if not even earlier.
>>
>>175460832
People usually make a distinction between concept art and turnarounds (which are made based on the concept art).
>>
>>175459918
I think the opposite is true. "Idea guys" are a dime in a dozen. Everyone can dream up some idea and put it to paper. That part is really easy and also the fun part that EVERYONE wants to do.

Hey guys, I hope this is the right place to ask:

I would like to turn this realy complicated board game into a vidya...
Is there any "platform" to do this?
I have almost no prior knowledge of game developing, but I did some basic coding in C.
I just have hex board with some counters (spaceships) and every ship has its own "status board" (which tracks damage, energy, speed, course and so on), after every turn you have to take data on your status board and run it through some tables and matrixes to get your position, speed, energy, and so on for your next turn... There are also calculations for weapon fire, damage model and so on.....
Most of this can be done in excel with lookup()....... except the board which is made of hexagons (im pretty sure its doable as well).

thx for replies

Literally no market, trying to get a board game sell well is 1/10^100000 trying to get a vidya board game sell is even harder

You need to transform your idea from "board game but digital" to "inspired by board game but made for vidya"

Yo

>>175461401
When choosing engines/frameworks your biggest worries are the rendering, workflow, licensing, and such other things unrelated to the game itself, any game mechanic can be programmed in any framework.
So it's better to ask which engine is best for 2D or 3D for example, and the answer is none of them, check out the engines in the OP and pick your poison.

It probably depends on what do you want to achieve

If you just want something playable, you can just make a Vassal module, but it's not something you'll be able to sell (there might be Vassal modules for this thing already, actually, check google first)
