Knight set and Firelink set both are protagonists sets, I guess. Those two appear in DW most frequently.
It's the same with DaS2. You have 2 armour sets that can be considered protagonist's sets. One is a poster boy set, you can find it later on, another one can be found earlier.

I do agree that the combat in DS is better than that of MH (That said, remember that difficulty in the MH series climbs drastically throughout the game - the combat starts off slow and the movesets basic, but as soon as you start getting to the higher ranks it gets a lot faster. DS has a similar difficulty curve, only that DS is significantly harder at the start of the game than MH is) but where DS really blows MH out of the fucking water is the lore. Just the amount of depth and constant tiebacks and tie-ins to lore as well as keeping a good amount of consistency throughout is really impressive and it really feels like they know how to play with it just enough to please the fanbase but still keep it within the world they've created. That said, the guy that got me into DS is a massive lorefag, so his passionate explanations of DS lore might have overhyped it a little.

People enjoy Fromsoft non-handholding approach to video games. It's a nice change of pace from other games on the market. Somewhere along the line thoughpeople started to mistake this as souls are challenging or hard, but that claim couldn't be any further than the truth. These games are no more difficult than the average game on the market, they only feel that way because there's no quality of life features other games have like maps, questmarkers, pause, checkpoints and etc.
